Abstract:The semiconducting TAPC molecules can strongly interact with PbI2 through π‐Pb2+ interactions, thereby inhibiting excess PbI2 aggregation and leaving a less n‐type surface of the perovskite films. The perovskite solar cell based on TAPC‐modified FA0.95MA0.05PbI2.85Br0.15 perovskite yields an improved efficiency of 23.15%, which is much higher than that of the control device of 21.19%. Excess lead iodide (PbI2) aggregation at the charge carrier transport interface leads to energy loss and acts as unstable origins in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a strategy is reported to modulate the interfacial excess PbI2 by introducing π‐conjugated small‐molecule semiconductors 4,4'‐cyclohexylbis[N,N‐bis(4‐methylphenyl)aniline] (TAPC) into perovskite films through an antisolvent addition method. The coordination of TAPC to PbI units through the electron‐donating triphenylamine groups and π‐Pb2+ interactions allows for a compact perovskite film with reduced excess PbI2 aggregates. Besides, preferred energy level alignment is achieved due to the suppressed n‐type doping effect at the hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces. As a result, the TAPC‐modified PSC based on Cs0.05(FA0.85MA0.15)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 triple‐cation perovskite achieved an improved PCE from 18.37% to 20.68% and retained ≈90% of the initial efficiency after 30 days of aging under ambient conditions. Moreover, the TAPC‐modified device based on FA0.95MA0.05PbI2.85Br0.15 perovskite produced an improved efficiency of 23.15% compared to the control (21.19%). These results provide an effective strategy for improving the performance of PbI2‐rich PSCs.

Abstract:A stable supramolecular organization modulating strategy is developed to modulate unreacted PbI2 and address both the efficiency and stability issues of perovskite solar cells. The self‐assembled supramolecule is demonstrated to be extremely stable under continuous light illumination in the ambient environment, thus efficiently eliminating the detrimental stability effect of unreacted PbI2. Excess PbI2 in perovskite film is an effective strategy for boosting perovskite solar cells (PSCs) performance. However, the presence of unreacted PbI2 is a critical source of intrinsic instability in perovskite under illumination, due to the photolysis of PbI2 (decomposed into metallic lead and iodine). Herein, this issue is solved by applying ionic liquids (ILs) on PSCs where the ILs can form types of stable supramolecules with residual lead iodide. The formation process and mechanism of the supramolecules are elucidated. The residual PbI2 is also revealed to cause high level lead interstitial defects and induced tensile strain which further deteriorate device performance. The self‐assembled supramolecular complex can passivate the PSCs where significant enhancements are achieved in both power conversion efficiency (PCE, from 21.9% to 23.4%) and device stability (retaining 95% of the initial PCE after 4080 h in ambient dry‐air storage, and 80% after 1400 h continuous light illumination).

Abstract:A novel intermediate phase modification (IPM) strategy is developed to effectively repair grain boundaries in the CsPbI3 type perovskite microcrystalline thin film, while simultaneously creating patches for interconnecting these boundaries. The resultant CsPbI3 solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of ≈20% and exceptional shelf stability, enduring 3000 h of exposure to air without encapsulation. The presence of excess secondary‐phase PbI2 in perovskite films shows a negative impact on their long‐term stability. Herein, an intermediate phase modification (IPM) strategy is proposed to eliminate residual PbI2 for improved quality of all‐inorganic CsPbI3‐type perovskite films, wherein the extrinsic agent is introduced to address the intermediate phase. By transforming residual PbI2 into a novel 1D perovskite phase, the IPM strategy acts as a patch to suture grain boundaries in the inorganic perovskite films. In addition, the IPM strategy not only enhances the quality of perovskite films but also mitigates energy disorder, reduces trap state density, and prolongs carrier lifetime by expediting the intermediate phase conversion process and passivating surface defects. As such, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ≈20% and a high fill factor of 83.3% are considered to be very efficient, with excellent shelf stability of 3000 h of exposure in air without any encapsulation. This work not only exhibits a novel optimization route for inorganic perovskite but also emphasizes the crucial role of eliminating residual PbI2 in inorganic perovskites.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites have attained extensive attention owing to their outstanding photovoltaic performances, but the existence of numerous defects in crystalline perovskites is still a serious constraint for the further development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In particular, the rapid crystallization guided by anti-solvents leads to plenty of surficial and interfacial defects in perovskite films. Herein, we report the adoption of a pseudo-halide anion based ionic liquid additive, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate (BMIMSCN) for growing ternary cation (CsFAMA, where FA = formamidinium and MA = methylammonium) perovskites with large-scale crystal grains and strong preferential orientation via the enhanced Ostwald ripening. Meanwhile, a novel halide-free passivator, benzylammonium formate (BAFa), was employed as a buffering layer on the perovskite films to suppress surface-dominated charge recombination. As a result, the cooperative effects of BMIMSCN additive and BAFa passivator lead to significant enhancements on fluorescence lifetime (from 79.41 to 201.01 ns), open-circuit voltage (from 1.13 to 1.19 V), and photoelectric conversion efficiency (from 18.90% to 22.33%). Moreover, the BMIMSCN/BAFa-CsFAMA PSCs demonstrated greatly improved stability against moisture and heat. This work suggests a promising strategy to improve the quality of perovskite materials via reducing the surficial and interfacial defects by the synergistic effects of lattice doping and interface engineering.

Abstract:In preparing the Pb-based perovskite film, excess PbI2 is usually needed in the precursor to promote the perovskite crystallization. However, this generally leads to rich unreacted PbI2 at the formed film surface, which can seriously degrade the final perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we developed a polar-nonpolar co-solvent process to efficiently remove such residual PbI2 and passivate the surface, which was firstly demonstrated in a 3-step process, where methylammonium iodide (MAI) was used as the passivator: 1) removing the excess PbI2 by a 1:4 1-butanol/cyclohexane mixture. 2) Passivating the surface by a 1:8 tert-amyl alcohol/cyclohexane (TC) mixture containing MAI. 3) Cleaning the residual MAI by a 1:8 TC mixture. The strategy was then applied to another passivator p-methoxyphenethylammonium iodide, and the PSC power conversion efficiency was enhanced from 20.56% to 23.69%.

Managing Multiple Halide-Related Defects for Efficient and Stable Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Halide-related surface defects on inorganic halide perovskite not only induce charge recombination but also severely limit the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells. Herein, adopting density functional theory calculation, we verify that iodine interstitials (Ii ) has a low formation energy similar to that of the iodine vacancy (VI ) and is also readily formed on the surface of all-inorganic perovskite, and it is regarded to function as an electron trap. We screen a specific 2,6-diaminopyridine (2,6-DAPy) passivator, which, with the aid of the combined effects from halogen-Npyridine and coordination bonds, not only successfully eliminates the Ii and dissociative I2 but also passivates the abundant VI . Furthermore, the two symmetric neighboring -NH2 groups interact with adjacent halides of the octahedral cluster by forming hydrogen bonds, which further promotes the adsorption of 2,6-DAPy molecules onto the perovskite surface. Such synergetic effects can significantly passivate harmful iodine-related defects and undercoordinated Pb2+ , prolong carrier lifetimes and facilitate the interfacial hole transfer. Consequently, these merits enhance the power-conversion efficiency (PCE) from 19.6 % to 21.8 %, the highest value for this type of solar cells, just as importantly, the 2,6-DAPy-treated CsPbI3-x Brx films show better environmental stability.

Abstract:The PF6− and N‐propyl‐methyl piperidinium (NPMP+) within the CsPbTh3 perovskite film form Lewis acid–base adducts to effectively passivate iodide vacancy defects, regulate crystal growth, and finally uniformly improve grain quality and decrease the trap density. This combinational strategy enables the CsPbTh3 perovskite solar cells to achieve high photovoltaic performance and operational stability. All‐inorganic cesium‐lead‐iodide (CsPbI3Br3−x (2 < x < 3)) perovskite presents preeminent photovoltaic performance and chemical stability. Unfortunately, this kind of material suffers from phase transition to a nonperovskite phase under oxidative chemical stresses. Herein, the introduction of a low concentration of Lewis acid–base adducts (LABAs) is reported to synergistically reduce defect density, optimize interfacial energy alignment, and improve device stability of CsPbI2.75Br0.24Cl0.01 (CsPbTh3) solar cells. Both theoretical simulations and experimental measurements reveal that the noncoordinating anions, PF6−, as a Lewis base can more effectively bind with undercoordinated Pb2+ to passivate iodide vacancy defects than the BF4− and absorbed I−, and thus the point defects are well suppressed. In addition, N‐propyl‐methyl piperidinium (NPMP+) is selected to assemble with PF6− in CsPbTh3 film. The NPMP+ can regulate the crystal growth and finally homogenize the grain size and decrease the trap density. Consequently, the LABAs strategy can improve the power conversion efficiency of CsPbTh3 solar cells to 19.02% under 1‐sun illumination (100 mW cm−2). Fortunately, the NPMP+ and PF6−‐treated CsPbTh3 film shows great phase stability after storage in ambient air for 250 days, and the power conversion efficiency of corresponding solar cells is almost 76% of the initial value after 60 days aging under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) become a research hotspot owing to their remarkable power conversion efficiency, simple preparation process and low cost. The properties of perovskite films play a decisive role in the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. This work systematically investigates the effects of excess halide modification on the crystallization quality of perovskite precursors (MAPbI3) using cation halides (CsI and CH3NH3I) or lead halides (PbI2, PbBr2, PbCl2). Modification by excess cation halides leads to low coverage of the films on the substrate and agglomeration at grain boundaries. The impact of lead halides on the crystallization process depends on the types of the halogen elements. Modification by PbCl2 leads to enlarged grains and increased film roughness. In contrast, PbI2 and PbBr2 passivate defects at the grain boundaries and interfaces, improving the quality of the perovskite films. We propose crystallization mechanisms to explain the effects of modification using excess cation halides and lead halides on the quality of the crystallized perovskite films. The performance of PSCs fabricated using the modified films are tested. The PSCs with PbI2- and PbBr2-modified films exhibit optimal PCE of 16.5% and 19.3% respectively, whereas the pristine device shows an inferior PCE of 14.3%.

Abstract:The morphology of the pre-deposited PbI 2 layer plays a crucial role in determining the quality of perovskite films in sequentially deposited perovskite solar cells. The main reason is that the PbI 2 film is too dense, which makes it difficult for organic salts to fully enter and react with them. This work presents a novel solvent extraction post-treatment method for the construction of bilayer PbI 2 films. The PCE of the prepared champion device reaches 23.8 %, which is higher than 21.6 % of the control device. We observed that the perovskite solar cells treated with EA retained over 90 % of their initial efficiency after being stored for approximately 700 h in a nitrogen atmosphere, and over 80 % in air, demonstrating superior stability compared to the control group.

Abstract:The presence of an excessive amount of lead iodide on the surface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is a significant contributing factor that adversely affects the stability of these devices when exposed to continuous light. To address this issue, we developed an effective strategy involving polishing PbI2 on a perovskite surface using CsF. In this study, we investigated the effects of CsF post-treatment on perovskite films and their photovoltaic properties. The results of the time-resolved photoluminescence and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy tests reveal the significant positive impact of our passivation method based on CsF, which reduces the valence band offset between the perovskite and hole transport layers while simultaneously enhancing the carrier interface transport. PSCs treated with CsF exhibited a photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.25% and an increased fill factor (FF) of 81.72%, which surpassed those of the original PSCs (PCE = 22.12% and FF = 77.40%). Furthermore, after aging for over 2500 h at room temperature and in 30 ± 10% humidity, the PCE of the unpacked PSCs reduced to only 42% of the initial value. Furthermore, the devices treated with CsF maintained their impressive performance, with the PCE maintaining optimal levels at 91% of the initial efficiency.

Abstract:A facile ion compensation strategy is collaboratively proposed by using an ammonium salt to pre‐treat the buried hole‐transporting material (CuScO2)/perovskite interfaces for an inverted device, resulting in impressive device efficiency (MA‐free: 22.42%) with improved operational stability. The present strategy can be extended to triple‐cation mixed perovskite solar cells with a champion PCE of 23.11%. The development of inorganic hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) is one of the most reliable ways to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the un‐optimal buried interfacial contacts and the defects located at the inorganic HTMs/perovskite interface restricted the device's performance. Herein, a phase‐pure CuScO2 has been synthesized and further employed as mesoporous HTM in inverted PSCs. Surprisingly, a facile pretreatment of the hole‐transport layer by a formamidine salt compensates the I− vacancy of the buried perovskite film, thus regulating the interfacial band energy alignment between the HTM and perovskite. This ion compensation strategy can not only in situ repair the ion loss and improve the built‐in electric field, but also decrease the charge injection barrier and suppress the non‐radiative interfacial recombination. Benefiting from these merits, the resulting methylammonium‐free (MA), Cs/FA‐based PSCs displays a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.42% along with excellent thermal and light stability. Moreover, the pre‐buried treatment strategy can be extended to MA‐containing CsFAMA triple‐cation perovskite film, and a champion inverted device delivers a PCE of 23.11%. This study offers a new avenue to the rational design of HTMs for highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Abstract:The delicate control of the crystallization behavior of the perovskite layer is critical for achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and longer-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Residual lead iodide (PbI 2 ) was usually evitable in the two-step processed perovskite film due to incomplete reaction; however, its exact effects on the perovskite layer and resulting PSCs were not well elucidated so far. Here, the lead halide perovskite films were grown by the two-step process, where the residual PbI 2 can be fine controlled by the concentration of organic salt solution. Results indicated that the properties of the perovskite layer may be varied greatly depending on the amount of residual PbI 2 , and a series of beneficial effects for PSCs can be achieved via suitable management of residue PbI 2 , i.e., prolonged carrier diffusion capacity, reduced defect density, inhibited ion migration, and interfacial charge recombination. Accordingly, an impressive PCE of 22.4% was achieved from the PSCs with optimized PbI 2 . Furthermore, the PSCs also displayed fairly good operational stability and retained 68% of its initial PCE after 400 h (at continuous irradiation under 1-sun illumination). This work may inspire solutions for further enhancing the performance of PSCs via fine controlled residual PbI 2 in the perovskite layer.

Abstract:This study improves the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by introducing a Lewis‐acid boronic ester‐containing agent 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole,5,6‐difluoro‐4,7‐bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl) (BT2F‐2B) into the perovskite precursor solution. It also provides a universal method for enhancing the stability of PSCs and a feasible approach for developing high‐performance and durable PSCs for perovskite systems with different bandgaps. Despite significant progress in the power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the instability of devices remains a considerable obstacle for commercial applications. This instability primarily originates from the migration of halide ions—particularly iodide ions (I−). Under light exposure and thermal stress, I− migrates and transforms into I2, leading to irreversible degradation and performance loss. To address this issue, we introduced the additive 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole,5,6‐difluoro‐4,7‐bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl) (BT2F‐2B) into the perovskite. The strong coordination between the unhybridized p orbital and lone‐pair electrons from I− inhibits the deprotonation of MAI/FAI and the subsequent conversion of I− to I2. The highly electronegative fluorine enhances its electrostatic interaction with I−. Consequently, the synergistic effect of BT2F‐2B effectively suppresses the decomposition of perovskite and the defect density of the iodide vacancies. This approach delivers a PCE over 26% for inverted single‐junction PSCs, with exceptional operational stability. According to the ISOS‐L‐3 testing protocol (maximum power point tracking at 85 °C and 50% relative humidity), treated PSCs retain 85% of their original PCE after 1000 h of aging. When the BT2F‐2B is applied to a wide‐bandgap (1.77 eV) perovskite system, the PCE of all‐perovskite tandem solar cells reaches 27.8%, confirming the universality of the proposed strategy.

Abstract:Development of inorganic metal halide perovskites solar cells (PSCs) has been hampered by the inherent phase instability of inorganic perovskites. Herein, an ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) is proposed to stabilize the CsPbI2Br phase and reduce the surface defect density. From experimental analyses and density functional theory calculations, the BMIMBF4 interlayer could reduce the energy loss and stabilize the cubic -phase of CsPbI2Br. The interaction between BMIMBF4 and CsPbI2Br could improve the perovskite film quality and the interfacial charge transport. Accordingly, the BMIMBF4-modified device enables a 37.18% and 18.89% improvement in the power conversion efficiency and open-circuit voltage compared to the control CsPbI2Br device, along with an 86.9% retaining of its initial performance over 1000 h storage in N2 atmosphere, while the control device drops to zero in 200 h. The work provides a novel cogitation for the defect passivation and energy loss reduction to improve both the stability and efficiency of inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Ion migration‐induced intrinsic instability and large‐area fabrication pose a tough challenge for the commercial deployment of perovskite photovoltaics. Herein, we develop an interface heterojunction and metal electrode stabilization strategy by suppressing ion migration via managing lead‐based imperfections. After screening a series of cations and nonhalide anions, the ideal organic salt molecule dimethylammonium trifluoroacetate (DMATFA) consisting of dimethylammonium (DMA+) cation and trifluoroacetate (TFA−) anion is selected to manipulate the surface of perovskite films. DMA+ enables the conversion of active excess and/or unreacted PbI2 into stable new phase DMAPbI3, inhibiting photodecomposition of PbI2 and ion migration. Meanwhile, TFA− can suppress iodide ion migration through passivating undercoordinated Pb2+ and/or iodide vacancies. DMA+ and TFA− synergistically stabilize the heterojunction interface and silver electrode. The DMATFA‐treated inverted perovskite solar cells and modules achieve a maximum efficiency of 25.03% (certified 24.65%, 0.1 cm2) and 20.58% (63.74 cm2), respectively, which is the record efficiency ever reported for the devices based on vacuum flash evaporation technology. The DMATFA modification results in outstanding operational stability, as evidenced by maintaining 91% of its original efficiency after 1520 h of maximum power point (MPP) continuous tracking. Abstract:Excess PbI 2 can improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it usually leads to poor cell stability due to the chemically active nature of PbI 2 . Improving the stability of PbI 2 -rich perovskite solar cells without scarifying the efficiency remains challenging. In this work, it is found that the non-uniform and multiple nucleation of perovskite induces crystallographic disorders at grain boundaries (GBs) of PbI 2 -rich perovskite. These disorders working as the n-type shallow dopant reduces the energy barrier for photogenerated electrons to reach GBs, triggering the decomposition of excess PbI 2 there. Therefore, the instability of PbI 2 -rich PSCs is related with the remote coupling of excess PbI 2 with the disorders at GBs. In light of this finding, we introduced a small amount (0.5 mol%) of CdI 2 into precursor solution to optimize the crystallization of PbI 2 -rich perovskite, and finally achieved a trade-off between efficiency and stability in PbI 2 -rich PSCs. The optimized PSCs with 10 mol% excess PbI 2 (PC-Device) achieved a champion efficiency of 24.26% at the bandgap 1.55 eV with robust stability. PC-Devices maintain more than 90% of the initial efficiency after being stressed under UV light in ambient with a relative humidity of 50% for 500 hours, and 70% under heat at 85 ̊C for 400 hours, both of which are far superior to the pristine PbI 2 -rich solar cells.

Enhanced Optoelectronic Quality of Perovskite Films with Excess CH3NH3I for High-Efficiency Solar Cells in Ambient Air

Abstract:Solution-processed polycrystalline perovskite films contribute critically to the high photovoltaic performance of perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs). The inevitable electronic trap states at grain boundaries and intrinsic defects such as metallic lead (Pb0) and halide vacancies in perovskite films cause serious carrier recombination loss. Furthermore, the film can easily decompose into PbI2 in a moist atmosphere. Here, we introduce a simple strategy, through a small increase in methylammonium iodide (CH3NH3I, MAI), molar proportion (5%), for perovskite fabrication in ambient air with ∼50% relative humidity. Analysis of the morphology and crystallography demonstrates that excess MAI significantly promotes grain growth without decomposition. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that no metallic Pb0 exists in the perovskite film and the I/Pb ratio is improved. A time-resolved photoluminescence measurement indicates efficient suppression of non-radiative recombination in the perovskite layer. As a result, the device yields improved power conversion efficiency from 14.06% to 18.26% with reduced hysteresis and higher stability under AM1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2). This work strongly provides a feasible and low-cost way to develop highly efficient PSCs in ambient air.
Increasing the wettability and reducing excess PbI2 using diamine hydrobromides with different lengths at the buried interface of the 3D perovskite film

Abstract:In p-i-n type lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the poor wettability of the perovskite solution on the typically used hole transport layer, Poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA), is harmful to get high film quality of the perovskite film. Moreover, the formation of excess lead iodide (PbI2) deteriorates the device stability. Herein, by introducing diamine hydrobromide with different lengths on the PTAA layer, its wettability is greatly increased, leading to a more uniform perovskite film and reduced trap density. Moreover, diamine hydrobromide can reduce excess PbI2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further proves the strong interaction between diamine hydrobromide and PbI2; the diamine hydrobromides with different lengths present different binding energies with PbI2. Among them, hexanediamine hydrobromate (HDADBr) has the lowest binding energy with PbI2 and enables the least traps formed in the device. Moreover, HDADBr also has the weakest interaction with I--rich perovskite surface, and the distribution of I density of states is expanded, which is more conducive to the diffusion of charge carriers. The best-performed PSC is achieved in the condition of using HDADBr, which exhibits an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.22% from 18.41% of the control device. The device stability is also notably improved; the PCE of unencapsulated PSC remains 90% of the initial value after 400 h degradation.
