Abstract:Hydrogen generation through photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology is one of the most appropriate ways for delivering sustainable fuel. Simultaneously, anisotropic properties will be exhibited by the materials with low crystal symmetry, allowing the tuning of the PEC properties by controlling the crystallographic orientation and exposed facets. Therefore, we synthesized copper tungstate films (CuWO4) with highly exposed (100) crystal facets by regulating anions in the precursor solution. According to experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations, the CuWO4 film with a high exposure ratio of the (100) crystal facet has promoted charge transport with trap free mode and reduced recombination of electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the oxygen evolution reaction is promoted on the (100) facet because of the relatively low energy barrier. Compared to the CuWO4 with other mixed exposure facets, CuWO4 with a highly exposed (100) facet presents a twofold current density (0.38 mA/cm2) and one-fifteenth electron transit time (0.698 ms) and also has great stability (more than 6 h). These results provide an easy way to enhance the PEC performance by modulating the exposure facets of the film electrode.

Abstract:CuWO4 is an n-type oxide semiconductor with a bandgap of 2.2 eV which exhibits great potential for photoelectrochemical (PEC) conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels. However, the photocurrent achieved so far is limited to approximate to 0.3 mA cm(-2) at +1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Possible limiting factors include slow surface reaction kinetics, poor charge carrier mobility and/or presence of surface defect states. A detailed understanding of the fundamental electronic structure and its correlation with PEC activity is of significant importance for devising strategies for further improvements. In this work, we have synthesized CuWO4 thin films showing a record photocurrent density of 0.50 mA cm(-2) at +1.23 V vs. RHE. Importantly, we have used a synergistic combination of photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) to unravel the electronic structure of CuWO4. Our results show that the valence band (VB) consists of strongly hybridized states of O 2p(6) and Cu 3d(9), while the bottom of the conduction band (CB) is primarily composed of unoccupied Cu 3d states. The localized nature of the Cu 3d state leads to the low charge carrier mobility and the localization of the photo-excited electrons to the CB. The combined experimental and theoretical results also indicate that CuWO4 is better described as having a direct but d-d forbidden optical bandgap, leading to a low absorption coefficient for visible light. Furthermore, the implication of the electronic structure on its PEC characteristics and strategies for further improvements by adding Co3O4 as a co-catalyst or surface layer to increase the interfacial band bending to facilitate photo-carriers transport, are discussed.

Abstract:Herein, we proposed the interfacial engineering of CuWO4/WO3 thin film to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance for solar water splitting. Our theoretical calculation reveals the significantly accelerated charge separation in CuWO4/WO3 heterojunction due to an in situ formed built-in electric field. Accordingly, an efficient ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique was developed to readily fabricate the heterostructural CuWO4/WO3 thin films on FTO glass substrates with accurately tunable thickness and composition. The resultant CuWO4/WO3 photoanode with an optimized CuWO4/WO3 composition (1 : 1) and thickness (& SIM;4.0 & mu;m) shows a high and stable photocurrent density of 0.66 mA cm(-2) (1.23 V vs. RHE) under AM 1.5 G illumination, which is & SIM;15 times higher than that of the CuWO4 thin films (0.042 mA cm(-2)). The significantly enhanced light absorption and accelerated photoexcited charge separation and transfer enabled by the CuWO4/WO3 heterojunction are deemed to largely account for the highly improved PEC performance of the CuWO4/WO3 film for solar water splitting.

Abstract:In this work, we explored a facile, scalable and effective method for substantially enhancing photocurrent and incident-photon-to-current efficiency of WO3 thin-film photoanodes by a mild reduction treatment under low oxygen pressure. Experimental data from photoelectrochemical and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies have shown that such treatment can increase the charge carrier density on WO3 photoanode surfaces resulting in improvements in hole collection efficiency and reduction in charge recombination. Despite a much thinner layer of WO3 (about 500 nm) compared to those in other published studies, the electrodes exhibited an ultra-high photocurrent density of 1.81 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE. This current density is one of the highest ones among WO3-based photoanodes described in literature. The proposed surface modulation approach offers an effective and scalable method to prepare high-performance thin film photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting.
