Abstract:Lors de son retour sur la scène astronautique en 1998, John Glenn apparaissait comme l’incarnation de l’èlite professionnelle porteuse de l’idéologie progressiste des sciences et technologies occidentales. Mais Glenn, le personnageastronaute, évolue à l’intérieur d’une histoire de rationalisation du lieu de travail qui se ressent comme une perte d’autonomie, un désoeuvrement, un hyper-conformisme et une indifférence généralisée. Cela crée des contradictions idéologiques à l’intérieur de l’espace identitaire professionnel. Cet article met en parallèle le rôle que joue Hollywood dans la promotion du voyage spatial et l’espace, le statut et le travail professionnels dans la société contemporaine. L’auteur traite des questions de classes, de nations, de races et d’identités sexuelles à l’intérieur du projet de la conquête scientifique de l’espace.

Abstract:This essay examines the visual text of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Since previous commentaries lacked a rhetorical framework sufficiently complex to explain the nuances of 2001, this essay develops a formal model from a subset of Kenneth Burke's perspective on rhetoric, and uses the model to integrate the four basic symbolic elements of the film into a coherent message. It is argued that 2001 is essentially a “religious” film, a cinematic warning against our dependence upon the machines and tools we have created. The film's climactic sequence is explained as the visualization of ultimate transcendence.

Abstract:This year marks half a century since Stephen Hawking made his greatest scientific discovery by theoretically proving that black holes aint so black, as they behave like hot bodies with an absolute temperature that depends inversely on their mass. This discovery is expressed by a simple and elegant equation known as the Hawking temperature. The best way to commemorate this great scientific event is by bringing it to a wide audience. The simplest and most transparent and intuitive tool to achieve this goal is dimensional analysis. The objective of this work is to use this tool to derive the Hawking equation, reveal its meaning, and explore its main physical consequences.

Abstract:This article offers an insight into the history of the U.S. space program, including its cultural and political aspects. Starting from the vision of space as a new field of peaceful and exciting exploration, predominant in the first half of the 20 th century, moving through the period of the intensive and eventually fruitful Cold War competition between the two bel-ligerent ideological blocs led by the United States and the Soviet Union, and ending with the present-day cooling of the space enthusiasm, it focuses on the main actors and events of the century-long struggle for reaching the stars. The article is based in part on primary journalistic sources in order to capture the social atmosphere of the times it focuses on. It points out to the mid-1960s as the time when the noble aspirations and optimism of the early cosmic endeavors started to succumb to the pressure of reality, which caused the overwhelming stagnation of space initiatives, effectively ending the Golden Age of extra-terrestrial exploration. This argument is backed by an analysis of historical developments leading to and following the American conquest of the Moon.

Abstract:Cet essai examine le film de Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) à la lumière de méthodes qui sont en phase avec le romantisme européen. Dans une telle perspective, l’utilisation d’une imagerie abstraite et d’une chronologie non linéaire reconfigure le mode de réception du film pour en souligner certains phénomènes typiquement romantiques tels que le renouvellement de la perception, la transcendance temporelle et le sublime. Puisque ces qualités sont généralement associées au cinéma expérimental américain — un genre lié de façon explicite aux films de Kubrick — leur présence dans un film-spectacle de science-fiction à gros budget remet en question notre capacité à définir 2001 comme un film narratif et mimétique au sens usuel du terme. Au bout du compte, ces éléments convergent vers une façon de regarder le film comme une allégorie évolutionniste complexe qui implique le spectateur dans son canevas symbolique, lecture du film soutenue par les théorisations du cinéma faites par Gilles Deleuze, Fredric Jameson et plusieurs autres.

Abstract:The expression “artificial intelligence” (AI) was introduced by John McCarthy, and the official birth of AI is unanimously considered to be the 1956 Dartmouth Conference. Thus, AI turned fifty in 2006. How did AI begin? Several differently motivated analyses have been proposed as to its origins. In this paper a brief look at those that might be considered steps towards Dartmouth is attempted, with the aim of showing how a number of research topics and controversies that marked the short history of AI were touched on, or fairly well stated, during the year immediately preceding Dartmouth. The framework within which those steps were taken was the development of digital computers. Earlier computer applications in areas such as complex decision making and management, at that time dealt with by operations research techniques, were important in this story. The time was ripe for AI's intriguingly tumultuous development, marked as it has been by hopes and defeats, successes and difficulties.

Abstract:The past decade has seen Parkes once again involved in a wide range of space tracking activities that have added to its illustrious legacy. This contribution is a personal recollection of those tracking efforts - both real and celluloid. We begin in a light-hearted vein with some behind-the-scenes views of the popular film, "The DISH", and then turn to more serious contributions; discussing the vital role of the telescope in alleviating the great "traffic jam" at Mars in 2003/04 and salvaging the Doppler Wind Experiment as the Huygens probe descended though the atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, in mid-decade. We cap off the decade with a discussion of the search for the missing Apollo 11 slow-scan TV tapes.
