Abstract:In present work the generalization of Einstein's special theory of relativity on 5-dimentional space is considered, in which as fifth coordinates we consider the interval s of a particle. 5-dimentional vectors in this space are isotropic both for mass, and for massless of particles. In extended space, offered by the authors, there is a possibility in addition with usual Lorentz transformations, to enter two new transformations, therefore massive and massless of a particle can reversible converted to each other.

Investigating Ultra-Large Large-Scale Structures: Potential Implications for Cosmology

Abstract:Large-scale structure (LSS) studies in cosmology map and analyse matter in the Universe on the largest scales. Understanding the LSS can provide observational support for the Cosmological Principle (CP) and the Standard Cosmological Model ($\Lambda$CDM). In recent years, many discoveries have been made of LSSs that are so large that they become difficult to understand within $\Lambda$CDM. Reasons for this are: they potentially challenge the CP, (i.e. the scale of homogeneity); and their formation and origin are not fully understood. In this article we review two recent LSS discoveries: the Giant Arc (GA, $\sim 1$ Gpc) and the Big Ring (BR, $\sim 400$ Mpc). Both structures are in the same cosmological neighbourhood -- at the same redshift $z \sim 0.8$ and with a separation on the sky of only $\sim 12^\circ$. Both structures exceed the often-cited scale of homogeneity (Yadav+ 2010), so individually and together, these two intriguing structures raise more questions for the validity of the CP and potentially hint at new physics beyond the Standard Model. The GA and BR were discovered using a novel method of mapping faint matter at intermediate redshifts, interpreted from the MgII absorption doublets seen in the spectra of background quasars.

Abstract:As the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey move toward completion, it is time to ask what the next generation of survey of large-scale structure should be. I discuss some of the cosmological justifications for such surveys and conclude that surveys at z=3 offer a critical advantage in their ability to access linear-regime clustering at scales smaller than any current survey and even the CMB. I discuss a possible implementation of such a survey and highlight some of the potential science return.

Abstract:The large scale geometry of the late Universe can be decomposed as R × Σ 3 , where R stands for cosmic time and Σ 3 is the three dimensional spatial manifold. We conjecture that the geometry of the Universe's spatial section Σ 3 conforms with the Thurston-Perelman theorem, according to which the geometry of Σ 3 is either one of the eight geometries from the Thurston geometrization conjecture, or a combination of Thurston geometries smoothly sewn together. We assume that topology of individual geometries plays no observational role, i.e. the size of individual geometries is much larger than the Hubble radius today. We investigate the dynamics of each of the individual geometries by making use of the simplifying assumption that our local Hubble patch consists of only one such geometry, which is approximately homogeneous on very large scales, but spatial isotropy is generally violated. Spatial anisotropies grow in time in decelerating universes, but they decay in accelerating universes. The thus-created anisotropy problem can be solved by a period of primordial inflation, akin to how the flatness problem is solved. Therefore, as regards Universe's large scale geometry, any of the Thurston's geometries should be considered on a par with Friedmann's geometries. We consider two observational methods that can be used to test our conjecture: one based on luminosity distance and one on angular diameter distance measurements, but leave for the future their detailed forecasting implementations.

Abstract:Since 2004, I have been collaborating with artist Josiah McElheny on the design of cosmological sculptures, inspired originally by the chandeliers of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. This article describes the science behind the four works that have emerged from this collaboration to date: An End to Modernity (2005), The Last Scattering Surface (2006), The End of the Dark Ages (2008), and Island Universe (2008). These works incorporate idealized representations of many fundamental aspects of contemporary cosmology, including expansion of the universe, the last scattering surface, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the growth and morphological transformation of galaxies, the rise and fall of the quasar population, the development of large scale structure, and the possibility that our universe is one of many cosmic islands in an eternally inflating multiverse. A companion article describes the history of the collaboration.

Abstract:The article compares traditional coefficients of thermodynamic activity as a parameter related to individual chemical species to newly introduced reduced chaotic temperatures as system characteristics, both regarding their usage in thermodynamic simulation of open chemical systems. Logical and mathematical backgrounds of both approaches are discussed. It is shown that usage of reduced chaotic temperatures and the Method of Chemical Dynamics to calculate chemical and phase composition in open chemical systems is much less costly, easier to perform and potentially leads to better precision.

Abstract:A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.

R., III ; Mao, Shude ; Park, Changbom ; Lahav, Ofer Abstract In a recent series of papers we have developed and tested algorithms for quantitatively measuring the topology of large-scale structure of the universe. In this paper, we apply our two-dimensional algorithm to observed sky maps and numerical simulations. We find that when topology is studied on smoothing scales larger than the correlation length, the topology is approximately in agreement with the random phase formula for the two-dimensional genus-threshold density relation, G_2_(Î½) is proportional to Î½e^-Î½^2^/2^. Some samples show small "meatball shifts" similar to those seen in corresponding three- dimensional observational samples and similar to those produced by biasing in cold dark matter simulations. The observational results are thus consistent with the standard model in which the structure in the universe today has grown from small fluctuations caused by random quantum noise in the early universe. In all cases (both observations and simulations), the two-dimensional results are in good agreement with the three-dimensional results. Abstract:We study the distribution and scaling of the extreme height fluctuations for Edwards-Wilkinson-type relaxation on small-world substrates. When random links are added to a one-dimensional lattice, the average size of the fluctuations becomes finite (synchronized state) and the extreme height diverges only logarithmically in the large system-size limit. This latter property ensures synchronization in a practical sense in small-world coupled multi-component autonomous systems. The statistics of the extreme heights is governed by the Fisher-Tippett-Gumbel distribution.

Abstract:In this work, resolutions will be given for commonly stated problems associated with a model that assumes that space and time are discretized (i.e., atomized). This model is in contrast to the continuous space-time model that is used in all common physical theories and equations -- a model that assumes that spatial coordinates and time are continuous variables. The resolutions to the problems are arrived at, not by proposing any new theories or postulates, but by strictly adhering to: Ernst Mach's principle of non-absolute space, the tenets of logical positivism, quantum mechanics and general relativity. The problems associated with discrete space-time addressed in this paper include: Lorentz contraction (time dilation) of the ostensibly smallest spatial (temporal) interval, maintaining isotropy, violations of causality, and conservation of energy and momentum. Importantly, this work yields modifications to the standard formulae for time dilation and length contraction, with these modifications preserving the quantums of space and time and allowing for temporary travel at the speed of light. Also given are: a resolution to Weyl's tile argument, a modification of the 2500 year old Pythagoras's theorem, a reassessment of Henri Bergson's theory advocating a distinction between the time durations measured by scientists and an immutable "Time", and a discussion of whether Einstein's light-clocks are as ideal as most scientist believe. Also included is a demonstration of how discrete space imposes order upon John Wheeler's quantum foam such that the foam becomes a gravity crystal permeating all space and producing measurable inertial anomalies of astronomical bodies.

A Novel Framework for Characterizing Spacetime Microstructure with Scaling

Abstract:The study of physics at the Planck scale has garnered significant attention due to its implications for understanding the fundamental nature of the universe. At the Planck scale, quantum fluctuations challenge the classical notion of spacetime as a smooth continuum, revealing a complex microstructure that defies traditional models. This study introduces a novel scaling-based framework to investigate the properties of spacetime microstructures. By deriving a scaling-characterized metric tensor and reformulating fundamental equations--including the geodesic, Einstein field, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equation--into scaling forms, the research reveals new properties of local spacetime dynamics. Remarkably, the golden ratio emerges naturally in linear scale measurements, offering a potential explanation for the role of the Planck length in resolving ultraviolet (UV) divergence. Furthermore, the study demonstrates how scale invariance in spacetime can restore classical geometric stability through the renormalization group equations. These findings significantly revise classical geometric intuitions, providing a fresh lens for understanding quantum fluctuations and offering promising insights for advancing quantum gravity theories.

It summarizes a vast amounts of information, and updates the Herstmonceux book on the IMF,(eds. Howell and Gilmore, 1998 - ASP publ). The book collects many long reviews on IMF determinations in the Galaxy, in galaxies, and in the Early Universe as well as deep implications of the IMF on star formation theories and on the physical conditions of the gas before and after star formation. It provides basic information needed for the coverage of these important quantities in graduate courses of Stellar Evolution, Star Formation, Interstellar Medium, Galactic Dynamics, Formation and Evolution of Galaxies. The book covers all aspects of the current researches in this field, as testified by the large number of contributing scientists.
Exploring redshift-space distortions in large-scale structure

Abstract:We explore and compare different ways large-scale structure observables in redshift-space and real space can be connected. These include direct computation in Lagrangian space, moment expansions and two formulations of the streaming model. We derive for the first time a Fourier space version of the streaming model, which yields an algebraic relation between the real- and redshift-space power spectra which can be compared to earlier, phenomenological models. By considering the redshift-space 2-point function in both configuration and Fourier space, we show how to generalize the Gaussian streaming model to higher orders in a systematic and computationally tractable way. We present a closed-form solution to the Zeldovich power spectrum in redshift space and use this as a framework for exploring convergence properties of different expansion approaches. While we use the Zeldovich approximation to illustrate these results, much of the formalism and many of the relations we derive hold beyond perturbation theory, and could be used with ingredients measured from N-body simulations or in other areas requiring decomposition of Cartesian tensors times plane waves. We finish with a discussion of the redshift-space bispectrum, bias and stochasticity and terms in Lagrangian perturbation theory up to 1-loop order.

Optical structures, algebraically special spacetimes, and the Goldberg-Sachs theorem in five dimensions

Abstract:Optical (or Robinson) structures are one generalisation of four-dimensional shearfree congruences of null geodesics to higher dimensions. They are Lorentzian analogues of complex and CR structures. In this context, we extend the Goldberg-Sachs theorem to five dimensions. To be precise, we find a new algebraic condition on the Weyl tensor, which generalises the Petrov type II condition, in the sense that it ensures the existence of such congruences on a five-dimensional spacetime, vacuum or under weaker assumptions on the Ricci tensor. This results in a significant simplification of the field equations. We discuss possible degenerate cases, including a five-dimensional generalisation of the Petrov type D condition. We also show that the vacuum black ring solution is endowed with optical structures, yet fails to be algebraically special with respect to them. We finally explain the generalisation of these ideas to higher dimensions, which has been checked in six and seven dimensions.

Abstract:I review the current status of studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe using redshift surveys of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. I first summarise the advances we have made in our knowledge of the cosmography of the z<0.2 Universe during the last 25 years, as well as the status of the major surveys in progress. The question of how the "a priori" selection of some classes of objects "biases" the mapping of the underlying mass density field is discussed in some detail. I then emphasise the advantages of using clusters of galaxies selected in the X-ray band as tracers of large--scale structure, summarising the most recent results of the REFLEX survey, which is under completion. The strong potential of using X-ray clusters to study the evolution of structure to large redshifts is underlined. I then summarise some of the most recent statistical results on the clustering of galaxies and clusters, using the two-point correlation function xi(s) and the power spectrum P(k). In particular, I concentrate on the increased information available on the detailed shape of these functions on large scales, lambda~100/h Mpc. I argue that significant evidence is accumulating from different observations that P(k) has a well-defined and possibly narrow peak around k~0.05 h/Mpc. I conclude with a glimpse into the future of large-scale structure surveys at high redshifts, describing the features of the VIRMOS deep survey, which will soon start collecting redshifts with the ESO VLT for ~150,000 galaxies at a typical depth of z=1.
Large-scale Structure from Quantum Fluctuations in the Early Universe

Abstract:A better understanding of the formation of large-scale structure in the Universe is arguably the most pressing question in cosmology. The most compelling and promising theoretical paradigm, Inflation + Cold Dark Matter, holds that the density inhomogeneities that seeded the formation of structure in the Universe originated from quantum fluctuations arising during inflation and that the bulk of the dark matter exists as slowing moving elementary particles (`cold dark matter') left over from the earliest, fiery moments. Large redshift surveys (such as the SDSS and 2dF) and high-resolution measurements of CBR anisotropy (to be made by the MAP and Planck Surveyor satellites) have the potential to decisively test Inflation + Cold Dark Matter and to open a window to the very early Universe and fundamental physics.

Abstract:I discuss several issues related to "classical" spacetime structure. I review Galilean, Newtonian, and Leibnizian spacetimes, and briefly describe more recent developments. Abstract:Research done during the previous century established our Standard Cosmological Model. There are many details still to be filled in, but few would seriously doubt the basic premise. Past surveys have revealed that the large-scale distribution of galaxies in the Universe is far from random: it is highly structured over a vast range of scales. To describe cosmic structures, we need to build mathematically quantifiable descriptions of structure. Identifying where scaling laws apply and the nature of those scaling laws is an important part of understanding which physical mechanisms have been responsible for the organization of clusters, superclusters of galaxies and the voids between them. Finding where these scaling laws are broken is equally important since this indicates the transition to different underlying physics. In describing scaling laws we are helped by making analogies with fractals: mathematical constructs that can possess a wide variety of scaling properties. We must beware, however, of saying that the Universe is a fractal on some range of scales: it merely exhibits a specific kind of fractal-like behavior on those scales. We exploit the richness of fractal scaling behavior merely as an important supplement to the usual battery of statistical descriptors. We review the history of how we have learned about the structure of the Universe and present the data and methodologies that are relevant to the question of discovering and understanding any scaling properties that structure may have. The ultimate goal is to have a complete understanding of how that structure emerged. We are getting close!
