Abstract:Compared to the traditional drilling and blasting method, the raise boring machine method offers a safer, more efficient and cost-effective approach for excavating shafts in broken rock masses. However, there have been limited reports on its application for constructing large diameter shafts in underground confined space. This study introduces a construction scheme for shaft in broken rock masses with a large raise boring machine in an underground confined space at the Yili River Hydropower Station #2 diversion shaft project. The specific construction scheme involves the following key steps: expansion and support of headrace adit, guide hole construction, raise boring machine construction, and the implementation of the hoisting system and shaft support. To verify the feasibility of this approach, a series of construction effect evaluations, including construction efficiency and shaft drilling quality, were conducted. The results indicate that the raise boring machine method reduced construction time by approximately 20% compared to the traditional drilling and blasting method. Moreover, the exposed surface of the surrounding rock appeared smooth and flat, with no destabilization of the surrounding rock or blockage of the primary pilot shaft occurring during the construction process. This study provides detailed case experiences and serves as a reference for the technology involved in shaft construction in broken rock masses with a large raise boring machine in an underground confined space.
