Abstract:In this paper a new approach to increase the agglomeration efficiency of finely dispersed aerosols by generating toroidal vortex streams in inhomogeneous ultrasonic field is proposed and studied. From the obtained experimental results (for two types of emitters) it could be established that the toroidal vortex streams generated in an inhomogeneous ultrasonic field provide an increase of the agglomeration efficiency when exposed to a gas-dispersed flow injected into the agglomeration chamber at a speed of up to 0.2 m/s. Further increase of the injected flow velocity leads to disruption of the structure of the generated vortex streams and agglomeration efficiency decreases. In the course of the analysis, it was found that the efficiency of agglomeration by toroidal vortex streams increases in direct proportion to the increase of the sound pressure level up to 165 dB. After that, no further increase in agglomeration efficiency is observed. By analyzing the agglomeration efficiency depending on particle size, it was possible to verify that the efficiency of agglomeration in comparison with agglomeration in a homogeneous ultrasonic field for droplets with a size of 0.2 … 0.6 μm is increased by 25 %, for 1.8 μm droplets by 20 %; and for droplets larger than 2.5 μm, the increase in efficiency is no more than 17 %.
Shear Turbulence Controllable Synthesis of Aggregated Nano-Particles Using a Swirling Vortex Flow Reactor Assisted by Ultrasound Irradiation

Abstract:The mass transfer in the shear controllable synthesis process of nano-sized particles using a swirling vortex flow reactor is investigated. This type of a reactor is able to generate a strong 'Rankine vortex-like' flow with a great shear gradient in the radial direction, trapping the synthesised aggregated nano-particles into the vortex core to form aggregation. The aggregated particles are further agglomerated to form larger particles with high uniformity under the action of turbulent shear and subsequent mass transfer due to engulfment occurred in the turbulent eddies. The mass transfer is enhanced by engulfment between the slabs of the liquid streams tangentially entering into the reactor while the local shear in the turbulent eddies with the length scales down to the Kolmogorov scale shape the particles, yielding well spherical morphology and narrower size distribution. In addition, the mass transfer performance can be further improved by intensifying the local turbulent shear by applying the ultrasound to the synthesis process. The instantaneous collapse of cavitation bubbles in the vortex due to the introduction of ultrasound results in intensified micro-turbulent streaming. The particle characteristics, chemical reaction and mass transfer performance are found to be correlated with the local turbulence characteristics in the vortex. The mass transfer can be characterised using the film refresh model via the Sherwood number by considering the agglomerated particles response to the turbulent eddies. Both numerical simulation and experimental results clearly indicate the existence of the correlation in synthesis of aggregated nano-particles in swirling vortex reactor between the mass transfer and turbulence shear by using ultrasound irradiation.
Nanoparticle Deagglomeration Driven by a High Shear Mixer and Intensification of Low-Speed Stirring in a Viscous System

Abstract:High shear mixers (HSMs), with their unique advantages of high shear forces and a wide operational range, are commonly used in nanoparticle deagglomeration. This study explores a novel approach to intensifying nanoparticle deagglomeration in a 100 mPa‧s viscous system using HSMs combined with low-speed stirring. The effects of main operating and structural parameters were experimentally investigated. The results show that the teethed HSM outperforms the blade-screen HSM, achieving a smaller attainable size (114 nm vs. 210 nm) and a higher fine particle generation fraction (46.08% vs. 18.77%). Increasing HSM size directly affects the energy input (from 6.478 MJ/kg to 31.879 MJ/kg), which influences the deagglomeration mechanism and kinetics but does not affect the smallest attainable size (117 nm). Higher solid contents improve energy efficiency, while low-speed stirring, though not altering the deagglomeration mechanism, enhances its kinetics. The process intensification factor (S) and energy efficiency factor (εm) were defined to evaluate the intensification of low-speed stirring. Increasing the impeller speed enhances this effect. The PBT impeller with a diameter ratio of 0.35 is identified as the ideal structure in this study, improving deagglomeration performance by 8.26% while reducing energy consumption by 8.3%. These results provide guidance for optimizing processes and improving deagglomeration performance through the combination of low-speed stirring in viscous systems for process industries.

Abstract:The preparation of nanoparticles can be conducted in a fast way by intensifying the micromixing due to the enhanced turbulence in an impinging jet Reactor (IJR) where the two linear liquid jets collide with high velocity to diminish the segregation. However, the micromixing is significantly affected by the occurrence of the stagnant region which may partially choke the reaction chamber. By imposing the ultrasound to the IJR, micro-scale turbulent eddies generated as the result of collapse of ultrasonically generated micro cavitation bubbles may generate a strong local shear. Such micro-scale turbulent vortices exert shear on the interface between the particles and surrounding fluid, resulting in uniform particle morphology and high surface area for chemical reaction. The paper aims to optimize the ultrasonic intensification effect on synthesis of nano-sized particles with desired homogeneity, reveal the governing mechanisms and present a kinetic model to describe the multiphase flow dynamics in the IJR. Except for the experimental method, numerical method was also used to demonstrate the impact of fluid dynamics on particle synthesis.

Abstract:To meet the needs of industrial installations to enhance mixing and mass transfer, solving the problem that the liquid turbulence caused by the microbubbles is weak and unfavorable for gas-liquid-solid phases mixing, we propose a concept of employing bubbles with a "bimodal" size distribution. Specifically, microbubbles are introduced to enhance mass transfer, while macrobubbles are utilized to promote mixing. Building upon this design philosophy, we developed a comprehensive gas distributor comprising a swirl-venturi microbubble generator and a ring-shaped gas distributor. This combined system aims to optimize the distribution of the bubble sizes. Experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the impact of bubble size distribution on gas holdup, solid holdup, liquid phase mixing, and the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient within the slurry reactor. From the experimental findings, we derive essential principles for the design of the "bimodal" bubble size distribution. First, the superficial gas velocity of the macro bubble should exceed the critical value, set at u(g,trans-tM), which equals 0.077 m/s in our experiments. Second, the proportion of air intake from the swirling-venturi microbubble generator to the total air intake should not surpass the critical ratio alpha(SVMG,trans) established at 30% in this experiment. These principles provide a solid foundation for optimizing the proposed "bimodal" bubble size distribution and improving the overall performance of the slurry reactor.

Abstract:Turbulent agglomeration is a promising pretreatment technology aimed at enhancing fine particles removal efficiency. Recent studies suggested that V-structure vortex generators are effective in improving turbulence to promote particle collisions and size increase. However, the experimental studies on flow fields and particles induced by V-structure vortex generators with different angles are still insufficient. To this end, this study investigated the effect of the angle of V-structure vortex generators on particle agglomeration based on the experimental approach. More specifically, the flow field dynamics were obtained directly from a Particle Image Velocimetry, while the particle behavior and size variation were investigated by a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer. The results of the Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer showed that the addition of the vortex generator and its angle increase led to an increase in average size as well as cross-particle size, while a decrease in number concentration of smaller particles, which confirmed the collisions between smaller particles. Through Particle Image Velocimetry experiments, it was found that a wider range of recirculation regions and counter-rotating eddies were generated. Furthermore, by analyzing particle distribution and tracking single particle trajectory through numerical simulation, two kinds of agglomeration mechanisms were proposed. One being the trajectory crossover of smaller particles triggered by recirculating vortex, and the other is the preferential concentration of larger particles. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the design of V-structure vortex generators and particle agglomeration techniques.

Abstract:Effective enrichment and separation of particles and mixing of multiphase microflows can be technically challenging in microfluidic sample processing and analysis. Acoustofluidic techniques have advantages such as high biocompatibility, versatility, and simple device design to meet these demands. Here, we present a novel tri-symmetrical acoustofluidic centrifuge based on traveling surface acoustic waves (TSAWs), achieving particle enrichment and bidirectional size-based separation, pushing away the larger particles while enriching the smaller ones, in a rapid time (<6 s). A microfluidic chamber was designed for further extraction of treated particles and cells. Experimental results show that our device can achieve enrichment of particles in a range of sizes and high purity separation (e.g. >90 % in 5 µm and 40 µm sample), demonstrating its sample processing capabilities. The acoustic treatment did not affect cells (consistent with the control group above 80 %). TSAW-induced acoustic streaming enabled efficient mixing (mixing efficiency χ >85 %) of fluorescent multi-phase microflows within a short time (<0.5 s). The underlying physical mechanisms have been verified by numerical simulations.
Particle separator with vortex claw: an efficient and new technology

Abstract:Despite facing many challenges, the exploration of using natural forces and mechanisms besides gravity to enhance particle settling has never ceased. A novel particle separator design, which utilizes multiple vortexes to enhance particle settling, was proposed in this study. The basic principle is using the fluid's energy to generate small swirling currents in a specially designed vortex claw generator. These currents bring suspended particles from the rapid and turbulent inflow to relatively quiet water regions, separating them from the main flows and reducing their travel distance to the wall. To verify the new separator design's performance, comparison studies were carried out in the laboratory using physical models. The results showed that the new design had much higher particle capture rates for the same inflow rates and tested particle sizes. Most importantly, it was able to effectively remove small particles, and particle capture rates were much less affected by fluctuations in inflow rates. Since most existing particle separators failed to perform well under large inflow rates, these characteristics make the new design stand out from other separators. Due to its special structure, its treatment capacity can also be easily increased without changing its horizontal separator size.

Abstract:Because of the pressing demand for environmental governance and resource utilization of pollutants, the separation of oil in oily wastewater has become a research hotspot in water treatment, with swirl de-oiling being one of the most effective separation technologies. However, the current swirl separation technology has significant shortcomings when separating microfine and heavy oil droplets. In this study, a new process based on composite force field enhanced separation was developed to enhance swirl separation of microfine and heavy oils by injecting microbubbles into the axial inlet hydrocyclone. The performance between the standard swirl and the proposed swirl air flotation processes in separating microfine and heavy oil was evaluated for overall separation efficiency, particle grade efficiency, and outlet particle size distribution. The results showed that the swirl air flotation process enhanced the separation efficiency by 24.2 % and 15.9 % for heavy oil (density of 950 kg/m 3 ) and light oil (density of 825 kg/m 3 ) with particle size distribution of EP2, respectively. The main enhancement was in the particle size range of 11.2–58.9 μm, and the largest enhancement in separation capability was achieved for oil droplets with a particle size of 16.4–35.3 μm, with an enhancement of approximately 18 %. Furthermore, the introduction of a swirl-stabilizing tube improved the separation effect and anti-fluctuation of the device. This study provides insights supporting practical applications of swirl air flotation and a provides basis for further studies aimed at broadening the axial inlet hydrocyclone application range.

Abstract:In order to control fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions from industrial sources, efficient separation technologies are absolutely crucial, in this work, a novel method was developed for enhancing PM2.5 separation by regulating particle size distribution of the cyclone's inlet using a spiral distributor. A general discrete model was further created for evaluating flow and pressure drop uniformity in parallel mini-cyclones configured along a spiral channel to obtain high separation efficiency and large handling capacity simultaneously. The results showed that the spiral distributor provided a "particle-sorting" effect, which made the small and large particles enter cyclone radially from the outer side and to the inner side at the rectangular inlet, respectively. The large particles on the inside of the cyclones could form a radially mobile granular membrane that could further drive the relatively small particles to be separated. The mean diameter of the inlet particles was 8.237 μm, the overall separation efficiency with the spiral distributor reached 90.5%, which was13.4 % higher than the initial cyclone. The maldistribution of the flow and pressure drop decreased significantly when the flow rate and cyclone number increased, and the maximum maldistribution of the flow was less than 10%. It is the first time for this novel method successfully applied to the deep purification of tail gas in the decoking process of an ethylene cracking furnace, in which the separation efficiency of coke particles was considerably improved.

Abstract:This study introduces an innovative microfluidic particle separation technique that integrates inertial focusing with deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) on a single chip, significantly enhancing the efficiency of particle separation. This new method completes flow rate matching through a designed pre-focusing and pre-separation inertial structure, avoiding the use of sheath flow. The process involves a sequence of channels: a rectangular channel, a contraction-expansion array (CEA), a lateral separation channel, and another rectangular channel. This three-stage inertial method shortens the focusing channel length and reduces the pressure on subsequent separation stages, streamlining the separation process. It has been demonstrated to separate 20 μm particles from a mixture containing both 10 μm and 20 μm particles with remarkable precision. The technique achieves a 100% separation efficiency, ensuring all target particles are correctly isolated, and a 96.1% separation purity, indicating that the isolated particles are almost entirely free from contaminants. By eliminating the need for sheath flow, this method simplifies the apparatus and reduces operational complexity, offering significant advantages over traditional particle separation techniques. The high efficiency and purity levels achieved by this method highlight its potential for a wide range of applications in fields requiring precise particle separation, such as medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and industrial processing.

Abstract:A novel separation device is designed to separate solid particles from the high-temperature, high-pressure dusty gas based on oblique shock wave theory. Two-dimensional numerical simulations and a series of experiments of the separation of the supersonic gas-solid two-phase flow are carried out. The aim is to validate the conditions for realizing the gas dedusting and to study the performance of the separation device. It is found that the gas dedusting can be realized only when the physical interface which basically overlaps the geometrical interface are stable and the design flow velocities at the dust-carrying and dust-absorbing nozzles are close to each other. Besides, the experimental results show that 57.83%∼67.28% particles with a sauter average diameter of 9.84 µm can be separated by the experimental device. 75.73%∼80.15% particles with diameters above 8.31 µm and 96%∼100% particles with diameters above 15 µm can also be separated. Larger particles correspond to higher separation efficiency. The same conclusions are also drawn from the numerical simulation results. The study indicates that the present method for the separation of gas-solid two-phase flow is feasible and highly efficient.

Abstract:In the chemical industry, moving fluidized bed adsorbent plants are widely used due to the high intensity of interaction between the streams. In this case, particles formed as a result of collision with each other and with the reactor wall need to be removed from the exhaust gases. This requirement is caused by a number of factors: the reduced operating efficiency of subsequent installations, the erosive wear of equipment mechanisms, the loss of part of the catalyst, etc. In the work, a separation device design is proposed with arc-shaped elements for separation of dispersed particles and gas. A three-dimensional model of the device is presented and its principle of operation is described. It is shown that one of the problems of its application is upward parasitic flows returning the captured particles back into the flow. To solve the problem, a separation grid is proposed. This work aims to investigate the influence of the separation grid design on the capture efficiency of solid particles in the device with arc-shaped elements. Three cases are considered to establish how the linear dimensions of the separation grid influence the particle capture efficiency: (i) the height of the upper part of the grid h 1 increased from 10 to 60 mm, the height of the lower part of the grid h 2 decreased from 90 to 40 mm, and the grid height h gr remaining constant; (ii) the height h 1 increased from 10 to 60 mm, the height h 2 remaining constant, and the height h gr increased from 100 to 150 mm; and (iii) the height h 1 increased from 10 to 110 mm, the height of h 2 decreased from 90 to 40 mm, and the height h gr increased from 100 to 150 mm. The study is performed by numerical simulation in the Ansys Fluent software package. In the study, the dust-laden gas velocity is set to 1 m/s at the inlet to the device and the atmospheric pressure is set at the outlet of the device. Based on the conducted studies, it is found that the use of a separation grid provides an increase in the particle capture efficiency, since it blocks parasitic upward flows to a greater extent. The separation device efficiency in capturing particles of 10 to 170 μm in size at the dust-laden gas inlet velocity of 1 m/s is 88.6% on average. The efficiency of the device with arc-shaped elements is maximized when the ratio of the upper part to the lower part of the separation grid is h 1 / h 2 ≥ 5/7.

Mixed particles separation based on a cylindrical microfluidic centrifuge

Abstract:This paper presents a novel cylindrical centrifuge designed to separate microspheres and cells. The polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF) tubes with heat shrink characteristics were used to encapsulate helix microchannels. Numerical simulations were employed to analyze and design the channel helix structure (with five annular loops, 2 mm pitch and 20 mm cylinder diameter). Then, The inertial focusing of microspheres (with diameters of 10, 15 and 20 μm) and the freshwater microalgae (i.e., Haematococcus pluvialis) in the cylindrical centrifuge were studied experimentally. As the particle size increased, the focusing position moved toward the center line of the flow channel, and the focus degree tended to decrease. When the flow rate increased, the focus position barely changed, but the focus degree increased significantly. A quantitative study of the centrifuge efficiency revealed that when the initial concentration was 104 particles/mL and the flow rate was at its optimal 1.7 mL/min, the centrifugal efficiency (CE) values of 10 μm, 15 μm, 20 μm microspheres, and Haematococcus pluvialis, were 98.8%, 87.8%, 70.8% and 64.6%, respectively. The CE is inversely proportional to the microsphere size and the initial concentrations. Compared with the other two centrifuges (the cavity-vortex and planar spiral), the cylindrical centrifuge design and manufacturing process have a simplicity that provides low cost, efficient sample handling, and effective separation of microspheres and biological cells.

Abstract:In this paper, we report an inertial microfluidic device with simple geometry for continuous extraction of large particles with high size-selectivity (<2 μm), high efficiency (∼90%), and high purity (>90%). The design takes advantage of a high-aspect-ratio microchannel to inertially equilibrate cells and symmetric chambers for microvortex-aided cell extraction. A side outlet in each chamber continuously siphons larger particles, while the smaller particles or cells exit through the main outlet. The design has several advantages, including simple design, small footprint, ease of paralleling and cascading, one-step operation, and continuous separation with ultra-selectivity, high efficiency and purity. The described approach is applied to manipulating cells and particles for ultra-selective separation, quickly and effectively extracting larger sizes from the main flow, with broad applications in cell separations.

Abstract:Object and aim of research. One direction in improving valuable components extraction in centrifugal separation is to apply it in the scheme of circular concentration. By means of multiple passing of a pulp flow through the centrifugal separator, higher indicators of valuable component extraction in heavy residue are ensured. The aim of this research is to study the possibility of improving the efficiency of centrifugal separation based on float circulation. Methodology. Laboratory testing has been carried out to cope with the given task. Centrifugal separation has been fulfilled in a laboratory fortex formation centrifugal separator K-200VL under the cone rotation 86 "Izvestiya vysshikh uchebnykh zavedenii. Gornyi zhurnal". No. 3. 2020 ISSN 0536-1028 frequency of 1000 r/min. Hydrocycloning has been carried out in cyclone separator GTs-75 with the apex diameter of 1.7 cm. The obtained concentrate and tailings were subject to gold assay test. According to the results of the assay test, the calculation of gold extraction in heavy residue and float has been fulfilled. Summary. The obtained result testifies to high efficiency of the proposed technical solution. The proposed technical solution ensures improved efficiency of the process by means of increasing the extraction of particles of increased density in the concentrate when increasing its quality and reducing specific water consumption for the process

Abstract:Here, an axial flow cyclone separator is design is proposed. The effects of varying the structural parameters and operating conditions on pressure drops and separation efficiency were investigated via a numerical simulation approach. The results show that of the three structural parameters considered, the distance between the diffuser and blade is the most significant factor impacting separation performance compared to the blade pitch and blade shaft diameter. Increasing the distance between conical outlet and blade can decrease its pressure drops and increase separation efficiency; while increasing the shaft diameter can increase pressure drops, and the increasing blade pitch can decrease both the pressure drop and the separation efficiency. The pressure drop of the optimized swirl tube was 102.1 Pa, with a corresponding separation efficiency of 95.04% for 100 μm particles at an extraction ratio of 10%. Further, the cut-off particle size can reach 3 μm, demonstrating that the swirl tube offers good separation performance and has the potential to be widely applied in industrial gas–solid separation applications.

Abstract:The droplet-based micromixing technology has been widely used in chemical synthesis, biomonitoring, and other fields due to its good mass transfer performance. Compared with plug-shaped droplets, spherical droplets have higher productivity and better mass transfer performance. However, the traditional mixing intensification method cannot effectively break the vortex symmetry inside the droplets at the changes of the channel structure, limiting the mixing performance of spherical droplets. This study proposed a co-flow-focusing structure to realize mixing enhancement by changing the initial distribution of internal components of newly formed droplets. A full-cycle multiphysics field model from droplet generation to mixing and exiting was developed to further reveal the evolution of droplet mixing dynamics based on internal vortices. The effects of the dispersed phase flow rate Q d , the continuous phase flow rate Q c , and the local geometry on the mixing performance were investigated. The results show that high initial mixing efficiency and internal vortex strength both can enhance mixing. There exists a critical dispersed phase flow rate Q d * leading to the lowest mixing rate. Conversely, increasing Q c enhances the initial mixing efficiency and internal vortex strength. The final mixing efficiency within the droplet (t = 50 ms) was increased by 15 % when Q c was varied from 2.20 μL/min to 5.04 μL/min. Additionally, the contraction orifice further enhances the mixing performance of the co-flow-focusing structure. The structure proposed in this paper simplifies the design of droplet-based micromixers, and the findings contribute to the further development of the co-flow-focusing structured droplet-based micromixer.

Abstract:Although the uniflow cyclone separator has low pressure drop and high collection efficiency compared to other existing cyclone separators, it still has room to improve its collection efficiency of submicron particles. For this reason, we present a new uniflow cyclone separator with an installed mesh filter called the MFUC. The MFUC cyclone body is not made of a solid wall but a stainless steel mesh with porosity. Our research newly revealed that the pressure gradient in the radial direction at the front region of the mesh filter is reversed in the rear region, which can help to remove sub-micrometer particles which are difficult to collect using a basic cyclone separator. The measured MFUC performance showed the synergetic effect of filtration and inertial separation for the removal of fine particles. As the inlet flow rate increases, the inertial separation becomes more effective than filtration. In addition, the cut-off diameter of the MFUC was 0.83 μ m at 500 lpm, which is 56.6 % smaller than that of the basic cyclone separator.

Abstract:Fine particles are significantly harmful to the human body and the atmospheric environment. However, the efficiency of current conventional dust removal devices for PM2.5 is low. Acoustic agglomeration is a promising pretreatment technology, which uses high-intensity sound wave to induce particles to agglomerate and improves the efficiency of conventional dust removal devices. In this study, an experimental setup of acoustic agglomeration was built and connected to an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and a bag filter. The influence of acoustic agglomeration on dust removal efficiency was investigated. Results show that acoustic agglomeration has a significant positive effect on improving the dust removal efficiency of the ESP and bag filter. The removal efficiency increases with the increase in sound pressure level. The optimal frequencies or frequency ranges that are best for the combined effect are also obtained. When the combined system is operated at conditions of 1400Hz and 148dB, the particle mass concentration removal efficiency of the bag filter can be improved from 91.29% to 99.19% and that of the ESP can be improved from 89.05% to 99.28%. The influence of medium vibration caused by the high-intensity sound wave is also discussed.
