Abstract:The aim of this prospective cohort study was to utilize multivariable statistical methods to identify factors that significantly affected whelping rate, litter size and gestation length in a large population of bitches of many different breeds, presented for routine breeding management. In addition, we aimed to determine the incidence of dystocia and the proportion of bitches undergoing a caesarean section procedure. A total of 1146 individual bitches representing 84 different breeds contributed 1203 inseminations over the 9 year (2007-2015) study period. Bitches were inseminated with either frozen-thawed (n = 645), fresh (n = 543) or chilled (n = 15) semen from 1371 different males. The mean (SD) whelping rate was 74± 4% and the mean litter size was 5.8 ± 3.1 pups per litter for all bitches in the study. The whelping rate was significantly lower in bitches inseminated with frozen-thawed semen compared with bitches inseminated with fresh semen (71% vs 80% respectively; P < 0.001). Semen that was classified as having poor motility (<30% progressive) resulted in a significantly lower whelping rate (37%) than semen classified as good (30-65% progressive; whelping rate = 67%) or excellent (>65% progressive; whelping rate = 79%). There was a linear decline in whelping rate with advancing age. Greyhounds and Labradors demonstrated a significantly higher whelping rate (88% and 94% respectively) compared with all other breeds (71.3%, P < 0.001). Bitches inseminated with frozen-thawed semen had significantly smaller litter sizes than bitches inseminated with fresh semen (5.4 ± 3.1 vs 6.2 ± 3.0 pups per litter respectively; P = 0.02). Smaller breeds had significantly smaller litters (4.4 ± 2.1 pups) than medium (5.2 ± 2.9 pups), large (5.9 ± 2.9 pups) or giant (6.7 ± 3.8 pups) breeds. For each advancing year of age, litter size decreased by 0.13 pups per litter. The mean (SD) gestation length from LH0 was 65 ± 1.9 d. Greyhounds had a significantly longer pregnancy duration (68.0 ± 1.5 d) than other breeds. For each additional year of bitch age, gestation length increased by 0.11 days (P < 0.01), and for each additional pup per litter, gestation length was reduced by 0.08 days (P < 0.05). Of the 890 bitches for which whelping outcomes were recorded; 409 (46%) whelped normally without assistance, 249 (28%) had an elective C-section, 205 (23%) underwent an emergency C-section and 27 (3%) were medically managed or required veterinary assistance for dystocia. Brachycephalic breeds were 11.3 (95CI = 9.3-17.9; P < 0.001) times more likely to have a C-section compared to all other breeds. Bitches with litter sizes of one or two pups had a C-section rate of 83%, whereas bitches with litter sizes of three or more pups had a C-section rate of 43% (P < 0.001). This study provides important clinical information to optimise whelping rates, litter size and the prediction of whelping in certain breeds for clinicians working in canine reproduction.

Crossbreeding Parameters for Fertility Traits in a Rotational Crossbreeding Between Landrace and Piétrain Pigs

Abstract:The reproduction characteristics of 343 sows in six different breeding groups were analyzed to estimate the crossbreeding parameters. The results indicated that the ovulation rate and the weights of uterus and ovary are mainly determined by the additive genetic effects while the nonadditive genetic effects play an important role in embryonal traits and litter performance. The heterosis effects in the first litter are larger than those in the second litter because of heterosis x environment interaction. The results also showed the existence of a highly significant maternal heterosis effect on the fertility traits of sows.
A Diallel of the Mouse Collaborative Cross Founders Reveals Strong Strain-Specific Maternal Effects on Litter Size

Abstract:Reproductive success in the eight founder strains of the Collaborative Cross (CC) was measured using a diallel-mating scheme. Over a 48-month period we generated 4,448 litters, and provided 24,782 weaned pups for use in 16 different published experiments. We identified factors that affect the average litter size in a cross by estimating the overall contribution of parent-of-origin, heterosis, inbred, and epistatic effects using a Bayesian zero-truncated overdispersed Poisson mixed model. The phenotypic variance of litter size has a substantial contribution (82%) from unexplained and environmental sources, but no detectable effect of seasonality. Most of the explained variance was due to additive effects (9.2%) and parental sex (maternal vs. paternal strain; 5.8%), with epistasis accounting for 3.4%. Within the parental effects, the effect of the dam's strain explained more than the sire's strain (13.2% vs. 1.8%), and the dam's strain effects account for 74.2% of total variation explained. Dams from strains C57BL/6J and NOD/ShiLtJ increased the expected litter size by a mean of 1.66 and 1.79 pups, whereas dams from strains WSB/EiJ, PWK/PhJ, and CAST/EiJ reduced expected litter size by a mean of 1.51, 0.81, and 0.90 pups. Finally, there was no strong evidence for strain-specific effects on sex ratio distortion. Overall, these results demonstrate that strains vary substantially in their reproductive ability depending on their genetic background, and that litter size is largely determined by dam's strain rather than sire's strain effects, as expected. This analysis adds to our understanding of factors that influence litter size in mammals, and also helps to explain breeding successes and failures in the extinct lines and surviving CC strains.
Variables affecting semen quality and its relation to fertility in the dog: A retrospective study

Abstract:Although semen analysis is routinely used to evaluate the male reproductive potential in the canine species, only a few authors have attempted to relate semen characteristics to donor traits, such as age or weight, and fertility. This study evaluated the effects of dogs' age (young: 0-24 months, adult: 25-84 months, old: >84 months), size (small: <15 kg, medium: 16-40 kg, large: >40 kg) and reason for semen collection (evaluation, artificial insemination, cryopreservation or research purposes) on the seminal characteristics and related the main seminal characteristics with fresh AI results. Overall, 251 semen examinations were performed from 140 dogs presented between 2000 and 2015 at the University of Pisa Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Conventional semen parameters (semen volume, sperm concentration and total number, subjective motility and sperm morphology) were evaluated. Overall, 227 (90.4%) samples contained spermatozoa. Azoospermic samples resulted from complete (n = 13, 9 dogs), or incomplete ejaculations (n = 11, 8 dogs), based on seminal alkaline phosphatase concentration and/or ancillary examinations. Reason for semen collection had a significant effect on semen volume, sperm total number and sperm concentration. The proportion of normal spermatozoa was lower in dogs presented for semen evaluation (P < 0.05). Dog size affected ejaculate volume and total sperm number, which was lower in small dogs compared to medium (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively) and large-sized dogs (P < 0.01). Age had no influence on volume, sperm number or motility. The proportion of normal spermatozoa was higher in young animals than in old ones (P < 0.05). There was a significantly higher proportion of midpiece defects in old dogs compared to young ones (P < 0.01). Total sperm number, motility and proportion of morphologically normal spermatozoa in the semen used in AIs resulting in a pregnancy were 627.6 × 10<sup>6</sup>, 83.9% and 64.9%, respectively, all significantly higher than in the unsuccessful AIs, where they were 389.4 × 10<sup>6</sup>, 66.5% and 42% (P < 0.05). In conclusion, age, size and reason for semen collection may affect main sperm parameters and must be taken into consideration during the interpretation of a routine semen evaluation. In turn, altered semen parameters may affect fertility after artificial insemination.

Abstract:Background: Service sire has a considerable impact on reproductive success in dairy cattle. Most gene mapping studies for bull fertility have focused on additive effects, while non-additive effects have been largely ignored. The main goal of this study was to assess the relevance of non-additive effects on Sire Conception Rate (SCR) in Holstein dairy cattle. The analysis included 7.5 k Holstein bulls with both SCR records and 57.8 k single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers spanning the entire genome. Results: The importance of non-additive effects was evaluated using an efficient two-step mixed model-based approach. Four genomic regions located on chromosomes BTA8, BTA9, BTA13 and BTA17 showed marked dominance and/or recessive effects. Most of these regions harbor genes, such as ADAM28, DNAJA1, TBC1D20, SPO11, PIWIL3 and TMEM119, that are directly implicated in testis development, male germ line maintenance, and sperm maturation. Conclusions: This study provides further evidence for the relevance of non-additive effects in fitness-related traits, such as male fertility. In addition, these findings may point out new strategies for improving service sire fertility in dairy cattle via marker-assisted selection.

Abstract:A retrospective analysis was performed to determine the effects of age, breed, parity, and litter size on the duration of gestation in the bitch. Bitches at two locations were monitored from breeding to whelping. A total of 764 litters whelped from 308 bitches (36 large hounds, 34 Golden Retrievers, 23 German Shepherd Dogs (GSD), and 215 Labrador Retrievers). By breed, the number of whelpings was 152, 72, 58, and 482 for the hounds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Labrador Retrievers, respectively. Whelping was predicted to be 57 d from the first day of cytologic diestrus in the hounds or 65 d from the initial progesterone rise in the other breeds. The average gestation duration (calculated as 8 d prior to Day 1 of cytologic diestrus in hounds or measured from the initial progesterone rise in other breeds) by breed (days +/- S.D.) was 66.0 +/- 2.8, 64.7 +/- 1.5, 63.6 +/- 2.1, and 62.9 +/- 1.3 for the hounds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Labrador Retrievers, respectively. The relationship of age, breed, parity, and litter size with the difference in gestation duration was evaluated using log linear modeling. Age or parity had no effect on gestation duration. Compared to Labrador Retrievers, the German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers and hounds were more likely to have a longer gestation duration; three, four and nearly eight times as likely, respectively. Bitches whelping four or fewer pups were significantly more likely to have a longer gestation duration than those whelping five or more pups; the prolongation averaging 1 d.

Abstract:Background: Good reproductive performance is fundamental for the development of a breed. Previous studies have indicated that the Bernese mountain dog has a relatively high prevalence of reproductive problems such as a high prevalence of dystocia and a low mean litter size. When reproduction is impaired, selection for other traits, including improved health, will become more difficult. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate reproductive data and factors affecting these in the Bernese mountain dog. Data collected by the Swedish Sennenhund Club during the years 2010-2020 were evaluated by statistical analyses. Results: Information from 1287 reported matings were included with a total of 614 bitches and 399 sires. For five reported matings that did not result in a litter, there was no information about the male identity. The reported matings resulted in 798 litters (62% whelping rate) from 502 bitches and 314 males. Paternal and maternal age had a significant effect on whelping rate with a negative effect of increasing age (P < 0.01). Median litter size at birth (LSB) was 6.00 (range 0-14) and was significantly affected by both paternal (P = 0.021) and maternal age (P < 0.001). Parity affected litter size at birth with a lower litter size in 4 year old bitches giving birth to their first litter compared to bitches giving birth to their second to fourth litters. Stillbirth occurred in 51.6% of the litters with a total of 15.4% puppies being stillborn. Total puppy mortality, including stillbirth, was 19.1%. The only factor affecting stillbirth was LSB while both LSB and season affected the risk of having post-natal puppy loss in the litter. The total prevalence of caesarean sections (CS) was 33.0%. The risk of CS decreased significantly with increasing parity and increased with increasing age. The risk of CS was significantly higher for litters with 1-2 puppies compared with litters with 3-9 puppies. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) calculated on 5 generations had no effect on any of the outcomes. Conclusions: Parity and maternal age had opposite effects on reproductive outcomes with a positive effect of parity on increasing litter size and decreasing CS rate. The proportion of unsuccessful matings was high with a negative effect of increasing age of both males and females.
Effects of sire, dam traits, calf traits, and environment on dystocia and subsequent reproduction of two-year-old heifers

Abstract:A study was conducted over 3 yr to evaluate effects of sire birth weight EPD, calf birth weight and shape, and heifer pelvic area and weight, individually and in combination, on dystocia and subsequent rebreeding of 2-yr-old heifers. Heifers (n = 550), MARC II yearlings, were assigned for breeding to one of four Angus sires with birth weight EPD of -.95, -82, +2.9, and +2.7 kg. At calving, heifers were assisted as needed. A gauge attached to the cal puller recorded applied traction pressure. Analysis of traction pressure detected only slightly larger amounts of variation (2 to 3%) affecting dystocia than the standard five-point scoring system. Dam weight did not affect calving difficulty score (CDS), except dam birth weights were heavier (P < .05) for CDS 5 (Caesarean section) than CDS 1 (unassisted). Dams requiring Caesarean section had smaller pelvic areas (P < .05), with no other differences among CDS. The CDS increased as calf birth weight and cal external measurements increased. Low EPD sires produced calves with smaller (P < .05) birth weights and smaller calf head and food circumferences and caused less dystocia than high EPD sires. The CDS did not affect subsequent pregnancy rates but did affect conception date of the second calf. Calves delivered by Caesarean section were lighter (P < .05) at weaning than other calves but had similar slaughter weights. As mean winter temperature increased (6.1 degrees C) from yr 1 to 3, calf birth weight decreased (4.6 kg) and calving difficulty decreased 23%. Results indicate sire birth weight EPD, calf birth weight and shape, dam pelvic area, and climate affected CDS, and CDS affected subsequent conception date.
Contribution of semen trait selection, artificial insemination technique, and semen dose to the profitability of pig production systems: A simulation study

Abstract:The economic impact of selection for semen traits on pig production systems and potential interaction with artificial insemination (AI) technique and semen dose remains partially understood. The objectives of this study were to compare the financial indicators (gross return, net profit, cost) in a three-tier pig production system under one of two selection strategies: a traditional strategy including nine paternal and maternal traits (S9) and an advanced strategy that adds four semen traits (S13). Maternal traits included the number of pigs born alive, litter birth weight, adjusted 21-day litter weight, and the number of pigs at 21 days, and paternal traits included days to 113.5 kg, back fat, average daily gain, feed efficiency, and carcass lean percentage. The four semen traits included volume, concentration, progressive motility of spermatozoa, and abnormal spermatozoa. Simultaneously, the impact of two AI techniques and a range of fresh refrigerated semen doses including cervical AI with 3 × 10(9) (CAI3) and 2 × 10(9) (CAI2) sperm cells/dose, and intrauterine AI with 1.5 × 10(9) (IUI1.5), 0.75 × 10(9) (IUI0.75), and 0.5 × 10(9) (IUI0.5) sperm cells/dose were evaluated. These factors were also evaluated using a range of farrowing rates (60%-90%), litter sizes (8-14 live-born pigs), and a selected semen collection frequency. The financial impact of the factors was assessed through simulation of a three-way crossbreeding system (maternal nucleus lines A and B and paternal nucleus line C) using ZPLAN. The highest return on investment (profit/cost) of boars was observed at 2.33 collections/wk (three periods of 24 hours between collections). Under this schedule, a significant (P < 0.0001) interaction between the selection strategy and the AI technique-dose combination was identified for the gross return; meanwhile, significant (P < 0.0001) additive effects of the selection strategy and AI technique-dose combination were observed for the net profit. The highest gross return was obtained under S13 with IUI0.75 and IUI0.5. The net profit of S13 was 34.37% higher than the traditional S9 (P < 0.0001). The net profit favored IUI0.5 with relative differences of 4.13%, 2.41%, 1.72%, and 0.43% compared to CAI3, CAI2, IUI1.5, and IUI0.75, respectively. The advanced selection strategy proposed including four semen traits is recommended on the basis of the higher profitability relative to the traditional strategy.

Quantification of factors affecting semen traits in artificial insemination boars from animal model analyses

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate individual fixed effects in an animal model for breeding value estimation for semen traits of pig sire breeds. Data (151,755 ejaculates collected from 2000 through 2007 from 2,077 Duroc, sire line of Large White, Piétrain, and single cross boars between these breeds) were from 20 AI centers in the Czech Republic. Traits considered per ejaculate were semen volume, sperm concentration, motility, percentage of abnormal sperm, total number of sperm, and number of functional sperm. Fixed effects in the animal model were month of collection, age of the boar at collection, interval between subsequent collections, combined effect of AI center and year, and breed or crossbred combination. Semen volume was greatest from October through December and was least in March and April. Sperm concentration was greatest in winter and early spring and least in late summer and early autumn. Both total sperm number and number of functional sperm were greatest in winter and least in summer. Semen volume increased until about 2 yr of age and remained relatively constant thereafter. Sperm concentration increased sharply until 11 mo of age, followed by a long-term moderate decrease until 3 yr of age and stabilization thereafter. Motility decreased steadily with age, whereas the percentage of abnormal sperm increased over the entire productive lifetime of the boar. There were initial steep increases with advancing age in total sperm number and number of functional sperm, both reaching their maxima at about 2 yr of age and then dropping slightly to the end of the time scale investigated. The interval between subsequent collections had a large effect on sperm concentration. Motility tended to decrease and the percentage of abnormal sperm tended to increase with lengthening time interval between collections. Both total sperm number and number of functional sperm rose as the interval between collections increased to 10 d. Although boars will continue to be selected mainly for their breeding values for production and female reproduction traits, AI centers should also place economically optimal emphasis on boars with favorable estimated breeding values for semen traits.
Reproductive physiological outcomes of dairy cows with different genomic merit for fertility: Biomarkers, uterine health, endocrine status, estrus features, and response to ovarian synchronization

Abstract:Our overarching objective was to characterize associations between genomic merit for fertility and the reproductive function of lactating dairy cows in a prospective cohort study. In this manuscript, we present results of the association between genomic merit for fertility and indicators of metabolic status and inflammation, uterine health, endocrine status, response to synchronization, and estrous behavior in dairy cows. Lactating Holstein cows entering their first (n = 82) or second (n = 37) lactation were enrolled at parturition and fitted with an ear-attached sensor for automated detection of estrus. Ear-notch tissue samples were collected from all cows and submitted for genotyping using a commercial genomic test. Based on genomic PTA values for daughter pregnancy rate (gDPR), cows were classified into a high (Hi-Fert; gDPR >0.6; n = 36), medium (Med-Fert; gDPR -1.3 to 0.6; n = 45), or low (Lo-Fert; gDPR <-1.3; n = 38) group. At 33 to 39 DIM, cohorts of cows were enrolled in the Presynch-Ovsynch protocol for synchronization of estrus and ovulation. Body weights, BCS, and uterine health measurements (i.e., vaginal discharge, uterine cytology) were collected from parturition to 60 DIM, and milk yield was collected through 90 DIM. Blood samples were collected weekly through 3 wk of lactation for analysis of BHB, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and haptoglobin plasma concentrations. Body weight, BCS, NEFA, BHB, and haptoglobin were not associated with fertility groups from 1 to 9 wk after parturition. The proportion of cows classified as having endometritis at 33 to 36 DIM tended to be greater for the Lo-Fert than the Hi-Fert group. The proportion of cows that resumed cyclicity did not differ at any time point evaluated, and there were no significant associations between probability or duration and intensity of estrus with fertility group. Cows of superior genetic merit for fertility were more likely to ovulate, have a functional corpus luteum, have greater circulating progesterone, and have larger ovulatory size than cows of inferior fertility potential at key time points during synchronization of estrus and ovulation. Despite observing numerical differences with potential performance consequences for the proportion of cows that responded to synchronization of ovulation and were both cyclic and responded to the Ovsynch portion of the synchronization protocol, we did not observe significant differences between fertility groups. Although not consistent and modest in magnitude, the collective physiological and endocrine differences observed suggested that cows of superior genetic fertility potential might have improved reproductive performance, at least in part, because of modestly improved endocrine status, uterine health, and ability to ovulate.
Combining genomics and semen microbiome increases the accuracy of predicting bull prolificacy

Abstract:Commercial livestock producers need to prioritize genetic progress for health and efficiency traits to address productivity, welfare, and environmental concerns but face challenges due to limited pedigree information in extensive multi-sire breeding scenarios. Utilizing pooled DNA for genotyping and integrating seminal microbiome information into genomic models could enhance predictions of male fertility traits, thus addressing complexities in reproductive performance and inbreeding effects. Using the Angus Australia database comprising genotypes and pedigree data for 78,555 animals, we simulated percentage of normal sperm (PNS) and prolificacy of sires, resulting in 713 sires and 27,557 progeny in the final dataset. Publicly available microbiome data from 45 bulls was used to simulate data for the 713 sires. By incorporating both genomic and microbiome information our models were able to explain a larger proportion of phenotypic variation in both PNS (0.94) and prolificacy (0.56) compared to models using a single data source (e.g., 0.36 and 0.41, respectively, using only genomic information). Additionally, models containing both genomic and microbiome data revealed larger phenotypic differences between animals in the top and bottom quartile of predictions, indicating potential for improved productivity and sustainability in livestock farming systems. Inbreeding depression was observed to affect fertility traits, which makes the incorporation of microbiome information on the prediction of fertility traits even more actionable. Crucially, our inferences demonstrate the potential of the semen microbiome to contribute to the improvement of fertility traits in cattle and pave the way for the development of targeted microbiome interventions to improve reproductive performance in livestock.
Genetic and Genomic Analyses of Service Sire Effect on Female Reproductive Traits in Holstein Cattle

Abstract:Fertility and reproductive performance are key drivers of dairy farm profitability. Hence, reproduction traits have been included in a large majority of worldwide dairy cattle selection indexes. The reproductive traits are lowly heritable but can be improved through direct genetic selection. However, most scientific studies and dairy cattle breeding programs have focused solely on the genetic effects of the dam (GED) on reproductive performance and, therefore, ignored the contribution of the service sire in the phenotypic outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the service sire effects on female reproductive traits in Holstein cattle from a genomic perspective. Genetic parameter estimation and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed for the genetic effect of service sire (GESS) on conception rate (CR), 56-day non-return rate (NRR56), calving ease (CE), stillbirth (SB), and gestation length (GL). Our findings indicate that the additive genetic effects of both sire and dam contribute to the phenotypic variance of reproductive traits measured in females (0.0196 vs. 0.0109, 0.0237 vs. 0.0133, 0.0040 vs. 0.0289, 0.0782 vs. 0.0083, and 0.1024 vs. 0.1020 for GESS and GED heritability estimates for CR, NRR56, CE, SB, and GL, respectively), and these two genetic effects are positively correlated for SB (0.1394) and GL (0.7871). Interestingly, the breeding values for GESS on insemination success traits (CR and NRR56) are unfavorably and significantly correlated with some production, health, and type breeding values (ranging from −0.449 to 0.274), while the GESS values on calving traits (CE, SB, and GL) are usually favorably associated with those traits (ranging from −0.493 to 0.313). One hundred sixty-two significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their surrounding protein-coding genes were identified as significantly associated with GESS and GED, respectively. Six genes overlapped between GESS and GED for calving traits and 10 genes overlapped between GESS for success traits and calving traits. Our findings indicate the importance of considering the GESS when genetically evaluating the female reproductive traits in Holstein cattle.

Influence of Sexcel™ (gender ablation technology) gender-ablated semen in fixed-time artificial insemination of beef cows and heifers

Abstract:Previous research has indicated that gender-sorted semen has decreased conception rates compared to conventional semen. A new method to skew the gender ratio of semen has been developed that does not use traditional sorting technology. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of gender-ablated semen in a fixed-time AI protocol. Beef heifers and cows (n = 878) from six herds were synchronized with the 7-d CO-Synch plus CIDR protocol, and artificially inseminated (AI) after CIDR removal (cows 60-66 h; heifers 52-56 h). Estrus detection aids were applied at CIDR removal and estrus activity was determined at time of AI. Animals remained separated from bulls for at least 10 d after AI. Pregnancy success and fetal age were determined between d 28 and 70 after AI. Semen from five sires was utilized in this study, with two sires used in each herd. Sire 1 was used in all herds and the use of the second sire varied by herd (both conventional and gender-ablated semen from each sire was used in each herd). Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure in SAS and included the influence of semen type, estrus expression, semen type by estrus expression, dam age, and sire in the model. Herd was included as a random variable. Overall, conventional semen had greater conception rates compared to gender-ablated semen (P < 0.01; 67% vs 52%), and cows that had fully activated patches and partially activated patches had greater conception rates compared to animals that had not exhibited estrus (P < 0.01; 69%, 65%, and 45%). There was no semen type by estrus expression interaction (P = 0.24). Conception rates tended to be greater for conventional semen among animals that had activated patches (P = 0.06; 73% vs 65%) and partially activated patches (P = 0.06; 72% vs 59%). Conception rates were greater for conventional semen (P < 0.01; 56% vs 33%) among animals that did not exhibit estrus. There was no effect of dam age (P = 0.40) or sire (P = 0.92) on conception rates. In conclusion, Sexcel™ gender-ablated semen can successfully be used in fixed-time AI protocols among animals that exhibit estrus, but caution should be used among animals that do not exhibit estrus.
Reproductive patterns in the domestic dog—A retrospective study of the Drever breed

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the differences, between seasons of the year, in the distribution of matings and whelpings, litter size, pup deaths, and sex ratio in domestic dogs. Furthermore, we wanted to examine the effects of age and parity of the bitch at the time of whelping on litter size, as well as the effect of litter size on gestational length. A final aim was to investigate the fertility and frequency of whelping problems in a private kennel of Drever dogs. Data from the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) registry for the Drever breed during 1995-2006, comprising a total of 2717 litters, were analyzed together with more detailed data from a private, professional kennel of Drevers, with a total of 285 matings and 224 whelpings, during the same time period. The most matings took place during winter, and the fewest during summer; consequently, most whelpings occurred during the winter and spring seasons. Of the 285 mated bitches, 78.6% whelped, 6.25% experienced dystocia, and 5.36% underwent Cesarean section. The pup death rate was 7.6%. The largest litters were born during spring. Litter size was negatively correlated with duration of pregnancy (r=-0.18). Each pup more than average caused a shortening of the gestation by 0.25 days, and each pup less a corresponding lengthening. Bitches giving birth to their first litter after 4 years of age produced a smaller litter than younger bitches. Litter size decreased after 5 years in all bitches. The number of born pups at the private kennel increased from the first to the third parity, then decreased. The number of registered pups increased from the first to the second parity in the SKK data and from the second to the third parity in the data from the private kennel, then decreased. Mating a bitch only once resulted in a smaller litter size. None of the studied factors had any effect on the sex ratio of the pups. There were significant differences between males in whelping rate among the mated bitches, but no difference in mean litter size, which indicates a female problem rather than a male one. Available data suggest that the domestic dog is still under considerable seasonal influence, although modified by ambient and management factors.

Abstract:Factors affecting the characteristics of corpora lutea (number, left/right ovary origin, weight, DNA and progesterone content) were studied in 73 healthy bitches divided into two classes of age (< or =2.5 vs. >2.5 years; mean+/-S.E.=3.6+/-0.3 years; range: 0.7-10 years), weight (< or =20 vs. >20 kg; mean+/-S.E.=16.2+/-1.2 kg; range: 5-45 kg), reproductive status (pregnancy vs. diestrous; pregnant bitches N=41 and diestrous bitches N=32), stage of luteal phase (20-40 vs. 41-55 days) and ovulation rate (< or =7 vs. >7). Two different assessments were performed: (a) comparison of luteal tissue characteristics and progesterone content between pregnant and diestrous bitches and (b) investigation of the effect of animal age, weight and ovulation rate on individual corpus luteum (CL) parameters. None of the luteal parameters differed between pregnant and diestrous bitches, even when the stage of the luteal phase was considered. Age and weight of the bitch significantly influenced luteal tissue characteristics: heavier bitches had more and heavier CLs (P<0.001) and carried more foetuses (P<0.01), while older bitches had a higher number of CLs (P<0.001). In pregnant animals, the rate of foetuses to Cls was 78.4%. Luteal progesterone content was significantly affected by the ovulation rate (P<0.01). A significant individual effect (P<0.0001) was present on all the parameters in the single CL, with the right ovary carrying a higher CL number (P<0.01), with greater DNA (P<0.01) and P4 content (P<0.001). CLs of younger bitches showed a diminished efficiency of P4 production (P4/mg, P4/DNA) with a significant effect of the interaction between age and reproductive condition of the bitch on DNA and progesterone content (P<0.0001). These findings indicate that animal weight and age have a major influence on the characteristics of canine corpora lutea.

Abstract:Laboratory studies with rodents indicate that in utero proximity of a female to male foetus can affect female's subsequent reproduction due to elevated testosterone exposure during early development. It remains unknown whether these findings can be generalised to non-laboratory species because the need for caesarean section makes it difficult to determine the intrauterine position outside laboratory conditions. As an alternative, some studies have compared the reproductive performance of individuals born in male-biased litters to those born in female-biased litters. We identified 44 of those studies in 28 viviparous species for a total of 176 relationships between litter sex composition around the time of birth and subsequent reproductive performance (fertility, fecundity, age at first reproduction, interbirth intervals or post-natal survival of offspring). Those relationships are discordant and complex both within and across species. Some factors can mask an actual association between litter sex composition and reproductive performance. Conversely, a part of significant relationships between litter sex composition and reproductive performance likely arises via pathways other than androgen- and oestrogen-transfer between foetuses of different sexes.
