Abstract:The aim of this prospective cohort study was to utilize multivariable statistical methods to identify factors that significantly affected whelping rate, litter size and gestation length in a large population of bitches of many different breeds, presented for routine breeding management. In addition, we aimed to determine the incidence of dystocia and the proportion of bitches undergoing a caesarean section procedure. A total of 1146 individual bitches representing 84 different breeds contributed 1203 inseminations over the 9 year (2007-2015) study period. Bitches were inseminated with either frozen-thawed (n = 645), fresh (n = 543) or chilled (n = 15) semen from 1371 different males. The mean (SD) whelping rate was 74± 4% and the mean litter size was 5.8 ± 3.1 pups per litter for all bitches in the study. The whelping rate was significantly lower in bitches inseminated with frozen-thawed semen compared with bitches inseminated with fresh semen (71% vs 80% respectively; P < 0.001). Semen that was classified as having poor motility (<30% progressive) resulted in a significantly lower whelping rate (37%) than semen classified as good (30-65% progressive; whelping rate = 67%) or excellent (>65% progressive; whelping rate = 79%). There was a linear decline in whelping rate with advancing age. Greyhounds and Labradors demonstrated a significantly higher whelping rate (88% and 94% respectively) compared with all other breeds (71.3%, P < 0.001). Bitches inseminated with frozen-thawed semen had significantly smaller litter sizes than bitches inseminated with fresh semen (5.4 ± 3.1 vs 6.2 ± 3.0 pups per litter respectively; P = 0.02). Smaller breeds had significantly smaller litters (4.4 ± 2.1 pups) than medium (5.2 ± 2.9 pups), large (5.9 ± 2.9 pups) or giant (6.7 ± 3.8 pups) breeds. For each advancing year of age, litter size decreased by 0.13 pups per litter. The mean (SD) gestation length from LH0 was 65 ± 1.9 d. Greyhounds had a significantly longer pregnancy duration (68.0 ± 1.5 d) than other breeds. For each additional year of bitch age, gestation length increased by 0.11 days (P < 0.01), and for each additional pup per litter, gestation length was reduced by 0.08 days (P < 0.05). Of the 890 bitches for which whelping outcomes were recorded; 409 (46%) whelped normally without assistance, 249 (28%) had an elective C-section, 205 (23%) underwent an emergency C-section and 27 (3%) were medically managed or required veterinary assistance for dystocia. Brachycephalic breeds were 11.3 (95CI = 9.3-17.9; P < 0.001) times more likely to have a C-section compared to all other breeds. Bitches with litter sizes of one or two pups had a C-section rate of 83%, whereas bitches with litter sizes of three or more pups had a C-section rate of 43% (P < 0.001). This study provides important clinical information to optimise whelping rates, litter size and the prediction of whelping in certain breeds for clinicians working in canine reproduction.

Influence of Maternal Care on Behavioural Development of Domestic Dogs (Canis Familiaris) Living in a Home Environment

Abstract:Maternal care has been shown to affect the development of the brain, behaviour, social skills and emotional systems of the young of many mammalian species including dogs. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of maternal care on the behavioural responses of family dog puppies towards environmental and social stimuli. In order to do this, maternal care (licking puppy's ano-genital area, licking the puppy, nursing and mother-puppy contact) during the first three weeks after birth was assessed in 12 litters of domestic dog puppies reared in home environments (total = 72 puppies). The behavioural responses of puppies were assessed in an arena and an isolation test, which were performed when the puppies were two-month old. Data were analysed using principal components analysis and projection to latent structures regression. A systematic relationship was found between maternal care and behaviour in both tests. In the arena test, maternal care was found to be positively associated with approach to the stranger, attention oriented to the stranger, time spent near the enclosure, yawning, whining and yelping (R²Y = 0.613, p = 8.2 × 10-9). Amount of maternal care was negatively associated with the number of squares crossed and the time spent individually playing with the rope. In the isolation test, the amount of maternal care was positively associated with standing posture, paw lifting, and howling, and it was negatively associated with yawning, lying down and nose licking (R²Y = 0.507, p = 0.000626). These results suggest that the amount of maternal care received during early life influences the pattern of behavioural responses and coping strategies of puppies at two-months of age. On the basis of these findings it could be speculated that early maternal care contributes to adaption to the environment in which family puppies are developing, with particular regard to social relationships with people.

Abstract:A retrospective analysis was performed to determine the effects of age, breed, parity, and litter size on the duration of gestation in the bitch. Bitches at two locations were monitored from breeding to whelping. A total of 764 litters whelped from 308 bitches (36 large hounds, 34 Golden Retrievers, 23 German Shepherd Dogs (GSD), and 215 Labrador Retrievers). By breed, the number of whelpings was 152, 72, 58, and 482 for the hounds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Labrador Retrievers, respectively. Whelping was predicted to be 57 d from the first day of cytologic diestrus in the hounds or 65 d from the initial progesterone rise in the other breeds. The average gestation duration (calculated as 8 d prior to Day 1 of cytologic diestrus in hounds or measured from the initial progesterone rise in other breeds) by breed (days +/- S.D.) was 66.0 +/- 2.8, 64.7 +/- 1.5, 63.6 +/- 2.1, and 62.9 +/- 1.3 for the hounds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Labrador Retrievers, respectively. The relationship of age, breed, parity, and litter size with the difference in gestation duration was evaluated using log linear modeling. Age or parity had no effect on gestation duration. Compared to Labrador Retrievers, the German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers and hounds were more likely to have a longer gestation duration; three, four and nearly eight times as likely, respectively. Bitches whelping four or fewer pups were significantly more likely to have a longer gestation duration than those whelping five or more pups; the prolongation averaging 1 d.

Abstract:Mammalian parental care, in most of the cases, is given by the female, who provides food, warmth, and protection. In domestic dogs, maternal behaviour shown by the dam mainly consists of contact, nursing, grooming/licking, play, punishment, thermoregulation, and motion. Peer-reviewed literature published between 1952 and 2018 was retrieved from CAB Abstracts, PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus and book chapters. Keywords for this search included the following terms: behaviour, bonding, altricial, precocial, offspring, maternal, whelping, nursing, domestic dogs, female dog, aggression, puppies, anogenital licking. In this review, we reported and discussed scientific information about maternal behaviour in domestic bitches, comparing altricial vs precocial species; the importance of the bonding, grooming/licking and nursing, and their impacts on puppies' behaviour; altered maternal behaviours such as aggression, cannibalism, rejection, and also the relation between hormones and maternal care behaviours. We concluded that the level of interactions between the dam and the puppies influences the physiological, cognitive and behavioural development of the litter, and the main hormones in the bitch for inducing maternal care behaviours are estradiol, oxytocin, prolactin and progesterone.

Abstract:In humans, scientific evidence emphasizes the role of birth weight on neonatal welfare, morbidity and mortality. In canine species, defining normal ranges of birth weight is a harder issue due to a great morphological variability in size, body weight and breed. The aim of this study was to correlate birth weight with litter size and mortality within 24h of life in 789 pups from 140 litters of purebred dogs and to investigate the aspects that might affect these factors. Birth weight was influenced by maternal size, weight and age (P<0.001). The lightest pups were from toy sized or weighing up to 10 kg bitches. Conversely, bitches aged 2-8 years whelped heavier pups than younger and older mothers. Birth weight was also related both to litter size, with heavier pups in smaller rather than in larger litters from medium sized bitches, and breed (P<0.05). Unexpectedly, birth weight did not differ between live born and stillborn pups. However, birth weight was lower in pups dying within 24h of life (P<0.05). High mortality of pups was related both to short pregnancies (P<0.05), also showing lighter litters (P<0.001), and to dystocic parturitions (P<0.001). Litter size was associated with parity, type and number of mating, and length of pregnancy (P<0.001). Low birth weight appears to predispose to early neonatal mortality suggesting a predominant role of the breed rather than size and weight in determining birth weight in pups.

Factors affecting reproductive performance in the Swedish Bernese mountain dog

Abstract:Background: Good reproductive performance is fundamental for the development of a breed. Previous studies have indicated that the Bernese mountain dog has a relatively high prevalence of reproductive problems such as a high prevalence of dystocia and a low mean litter size. When reproduction is impaired, selection for other traits, including improved health, will become more difficult. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate reproductive data and factors affecting these in the Bernese mountain dog. Data collected by the Swedish Sennenhund Club during the years 2010-2020 were evaluated by statistical analyses. Results: Information from 1287 reported matings were included with a total of 614 bitches and 399 sires. For five reported matings that did not result in a litter, there was no information about the male identity. The reported matings resulted in 798 litters (62% whelping rate) from 502 bitches and 314 males. Paternal and maternal age had a significant effect on whelping rate with a negative effect of increasing age (P < 0.01). Median litter size at birth (LSB) was 6.00 (range 0-14) and was significantly affected by both paternal (P = 0.021) and maternal age (P < 0.001). Parity affected litter size at birth with a lower litter size in 4 year old bitches giving birth to their first litter compared to bitches giving birth to their second to fourth litters. Stillbirth occurred in 51.6% of the litters with a total of 15.4% puppies being stillborn. Total puppy mortality, including stillbirth, was 19.1%. The only factor affecting stillbirth was LSB while both LSB and season affected the risk of having post-natal puppy loss in the litter. The total prevalence of caesarean sections (CS) was 33.0%. The risk of CS decreased significantly with increasing parity and increased with increasing age. The risk of CS was significantly higher for litters with 1-2 puppies compared with litters with 3-9 puppies. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) calculated on 5 generations had no effect on any of the outcomes. Conclusions: Parity and maternal age had opposite effects on reproductive outcomes with a positive effect of parity on increasing litter size and decreasing CS rate. The proportion of unsuccessful matings was high with a negative effect of increasing age of both males and females.

Abstract:Low birth weight (LBW) has been identified as a major risk factor for neonatal mortality in many species. The aim of this survey was to determine the profiles of canine and feline breeders concerning their perceptions of, and management practices relating to, LBW individuals. An anonymous online survey was addressed to French cat and dog breeders in September 2019 via social networks. Multiple correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering were used to explore breeders’ profiles. Three clusters were identified among the 649 breeders included in this analysis. Cluster 1 (49%) included dog and cat breeders who weighed newborns (and thus identified LBW) and controlled nursing by the dam (controlled suckling) but did not warm them up. Cluster 2 breeders (21%) of both species did not weigh puppies or kittens to identify LBW or to monitor the evolution of their weight afterwards. Cluster 3 (30%) including mostly cat breeders who weighed neonates routinely as in Cluster 1, but they practiced artificial feeding rather than controlled suckling. This survey provides a basis for better understanding of perceptions and practices regarding LBW puppies and kittens. It will be useful to provide guidelines for neonatal management to increase their chances of survival.

[Association between perinatal mortality and the management of cows before and at calving in large dairy herds]

Abstract:Objective: Stillbirths account for a relevant proportion of total calf mortality on dairy farms. In addition, the stillbirth rate is an important criterion for assessing animal welfare. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the stillbirth rate and aspects concerning the management of cows ante partum and during the calving period in larger dairy herds. Material and methods: In 97 dairy farms with an average herd size of 550 cattle (≥24 months old), data concerning farm management and animal health were collected as part of a farm inspection using a questionnaire. The stillbirth rate of the respective farms was determined based on the farm's own data on the milk yield test and analyzed for possible correlations with farm management using a multivariable factor analysis. Results: A higher stillbirth rate was found on farms with particularly lean and overconditioned transit cows in the herd. A positive association to the stillbirth rate was also found for farms using a special birth monitoring system for heifers and those with more than 20% assisted calvings. There was no association with herd size. Conclusions: Regardless of herd size, factors that are related to the stillbirth rate may be determined by analyzing the farm management. The body condition of the cows is a key parameter. The introduction of special birth monitoring for heifers can probably be interpreted as a reaction to increased stillbirths in the herd. Clinical relevance: Conditioning cows before calving is an important field of action for herd managers in order to avoid stillbirths. The cows should not approach the calving period in an overly lean or over-conditioned state. When in such state, however, it is advisable for these cows to be monitored more closely in order to allow for professional assistance at the pertinent time period. Integration of body condition scoring of cows at dry-off, calving and the end of the high-yielding period, assessment of calving conditions and training of staff involved in obstetrics into veterinary herd management is warranted.
Factors affecting duration of the expulsive stage of parturition and piglet birth intervals in sows with uncomplicated, spontaneous farrowings

Abstract:Modern pig farming is still confronted with high perinatal piglet losses which are mainly contributed to factors associated with the progress of piglet expulsion. Therefore the aim of this study was to identify sow- and piglet factors affecting the duration of the expulsive stage of farrowing and piglet birth intervals in spontaneous farrowing sows originating from five different breeds. In total 211 litters were investigated. Breed affected duration of the expulsive stage significantly: the shortest duration was found in Large White x Meishan F2 crossbred litters and the longest duration in Dutch Landrace litters. No effect of parity on the duration of the expulsive stage was found. An increase in littersize (P<0.01), an increase in number of stillborn piglets per litter (P<0.05) and a decrease of gestation length (P<0.05, independently of littersize) all resulted in an increased duration of the expulsive stage of farrowing. A curvilinear relationship between birth interval and rank (relative position in the birth order) of the piglets was found. Besides that, piglet birth intervals increased with an increasing birth weight (P<0.001). Stillborn (P<0.01) and posteriorly presented (P<0.05) piglets were delivered after significantly longer birth intervals than liveborn and anteriorly presented piglets. The results on sow- and piglet factors affecting duration of the expulsive stage and piglet birth intervals obtained in this study contribute to an increased insight into (patho) physiological aspects of perinatal mortality in pigs.
Influence of maternal, anesthetic, and surgical factors on neonatal survival after emergency cesarean section in 78 dogs: A retrospective study (2002 to 2020)

Abstract:Neonatal mortality rate (NMR) may be affected by maternal physical condition, anesthesia, and uterine incision or en-bloc neonate removal. The association of selected factors with number of dogs with dead puppies at hospital discharge was evaluated using 78 records. Data obtained at admittance for emergency cesarean section included: age, small or large body size, rectal temperature, packed cell volume, serum total protein, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, puppy in pelvic canal, and heart rate. Administration of opioids, propofol, alfaxalone, isoflurane, and sevoflurane, and anesthesia/surgical times and surgical technique were evaluated using Fisher's exact tests. There were 238 live puppies and 38 dogs had 58 dead puppies; the NMR was 19.6%. Mortality was associated with puppy in the pelvic canal (P = 0.003) and duration of anesthesia > 80 minutes (P = 0.029). Age > 8 years (P = 0.054) and induction time to start of surgery > 30 minutes (P = 0.17) may be associated with mortality. Expedient cesarean section with obstructive dystocia and an induction time to start of surgery < 30 minutes are important for puppy survival.

Abstract:With recent research in humans, a hypothesis known as the sterile womb paradigm has been challenged. The objectives of this study were to determine the presence of placental and fetal microbiomes in dogs, the effect of different types of parturition on the fetal microbiome, and the effect that the fetal microbiome has on early puppy development.A total of 96 newborn puppies from 17 dams were included in the study. Puppies were divided into two groups depending on the type of parturition (vaginal birth (VB) or cesarean section (CS)). Immediately after birth, swabs of the placenta and meconium were taken. Swabs of the oral and vaginal mucosa of the dam were taken in the second half of the pregnancy and just before parturition. All samples were analyzed with a classical bacteriological examination, and bacterial colonies were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The weight gain of each puppy was tracked daily in the first 7 days postpartum.Bacteria from several different genera were isolated from 86.5% of meconium samples and 57% of placenta samples. While the meconium microbiota resembled bacteria from the maternal vagina in VB puppies, the meconium microbiota of puppies born by CS indicated a relative resemblance to maternal oral and vaginal microbiota. A statistically significant difference in the relative growth rate between puppies born by VB and CS was found (p < 0.05), with puppies born by VB gaining weight faster compared to the CS group. This difference was even more noticeable when VB puppies were compared to puppies born by elective CS. Puppies born without a detectable meconium or placental microbiota showed a slower growth rate than those with a meconium microbiota, regardless of the type of parturition (p < 0.05).The findings of this study provide new information about the placental microbiome in healthy pregnant dams and suggest intrauterine colonization of the fetus in dogs. It seems that the type of delivery and bacterial colonization might be an important consideration for the weight gain in puppies in the first few days of life.

Impact of Type of Parturition on Colostrum Microbiota Composition and Puppy Survival

Abstract:The objective of our study was to determine whether the type of parturition affects the microbiota of the colostrum and the growth and survival of the puppies. Seventy-nine newborn puppies were divided into three groups regarding the type of parturition: vaginal delivery (VD), elective caesarean section (EL-CS), and emergency caesarean section (EM-CS). After the birth of the puppies, swabs of meconium were collected from the puppies and colostrum was obtained from the dam. Many aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were isolated and identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The colostrum microbiota of VD and EL-CS puppies contained a significantly higher abundance of bacteria belonging to the genera Staphylococcus, Kocuria and Enterococcus compared with EM-CS colostrum samples. The composition of the meconium microbiota of the puppies present at birth was similar to the colostrum microbiota of their mothers. It was also found that puppies without a meconium microbiota at birth gained weight more slowly compared with puppies with a meconium microbiota at birth. The type of parturition influenced the bacterial composition of the microbiota in the colostrum. Future studies are necessary to further define the significance of the observed differences in microbiota composition between EM-CS compared with EL-CS and VD colostrum microbiota.

Utero-Placental Immune Milieu during Normal and Aglepristone-Induced Parturition in the Dog

Abstract:Maternal immunotolerance is required for the maintenance of pregnancy, in sharp contrast with the uterine pro-inflammatory activity observed during parturition in several species. Correspondingly, in the dog, increased immune signaling at term has been suggested, but a deeper understanding of the uterine immune milieu is still missing. Thus, the availability of 30 immune-related factors was assessed in utero-placental samples collected during post-implantation (days 18-25 of pregnancy) and mid-gestation (days 35-40) stages, and at the time of prepartum luteolysis. Gene expression and/or protein localization studies were employed. Samples collected from antigestagen (aglepristone)-treated dogs were further analyzed. Progression of pregnancy was associated with the downregulation of IL1β and upregulation of IL10 (p < 0.05) at mid-gestation. When compared with mid-gestation, a higher availability of several factors was observed at term (e.g., CD206, CD4, TLR4). However, in contrast with natural parturition, MHCII, CD25, CCR7, TNFα, IDO1 and AIF1 were upregulated after aglepristone treatment (p < 0.05), but not TNFR1 or CCL13 (p > 0.05). Altogether, these results show an increased immune activity during canine parturition, involving, i.a., M2 macrophages, Treg and Th cells, with strong support for progesterone-mediated immunomodulation. Furthermore, differences between term and induced parturition/abortion could relate to differences in placental maturation towards parturition and/or functional traits of antigestagens.

Abstract:Puppy survival during their first weeks of life can be improved, and early detection of puppies with increased mortality risk is one of the keys to success. In the canine species, the few studies on this subject focused on birth weight, which reflects intrauterine growth. The present work aimed to explore the interconnections between birth weight, early growth and survival until two months of life in the canine species. In total, data from 8550 puppies born in 127 French breeding kennels were analysed. Five different growth rates were calculated to reflect the growth of puppies during their first week of life. Low-birth-weight puppies had lower growth than normal-birth-weight puppies over the first two days of life but higher growth rates thereafter. Growth-rate thresholds allowing the identification of puppies at higher risk of mortality during their first two months of life were lower for low-birth-weight puppies. These thresholds will help breeders and veterinarians to identify puppies at risk with particular needs for monitoring and nursing to improve their chances of survival.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the differences, between seasons of the year, in the distribution of matings and whelpings, litter size, pup deaths, and sex ratio in domestic dogs. Furthermore, we wanted to examine the effects of age and parity of the bitch at the time of whelping on litter size, as well as the effect of litter size on gestational length. A final aim was to investigate the fertility and frequency of whelping problems in a private kennel of Drever dogs. Data from the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) registry for the Drever breed during 1995-2006, comprising a total of 2717 litters, were analyzed together with more detailed data from a private, professional kennel of Drevers, with a total of 285 matings and 224 whelpings, during the same time period. The most matings took place during winter, and the fewest during summer; consequently, most whelpings occurred during the winter and spring seasons. Of the 285 mated bitches, 78.6% whelped, 6.25% experienced dystocia, and 5.36% underwent Cesarean section. The pup death rate was 7.6%. The largest litters were born during spring. Litter size was negatively correlated with duration of pregnancy (r=-0.18). Each pup more than average caused a shortening of the gestation by 0.25 days, and each pup less a corresponding lengthening. Bitches giving birth to their first litter after 4 years of age produced a smaller litter than younger bitches. Litter size decreased after 5 years in all bitches. The number of born pups at the private kennel increased from the first to the third parity, then decreased. The number of registered pups increased from the first to the second parity in the SKK data and from the second to the third parity in the data from the private kennel, then decreased. Mating a bitch only once resulted in a smaller litter size. None of the studied factors had any effect on the sex ratio of the pups. There were significant differences between males in whelping rate among the mated bitches, but no difference in mean litter size, which indicates a female problem rather than a male one. Available data suggest that the domestic dog is still under considerable seasonal influence, although modified by ambient and management factors.
