Abstract:˖Ultrasonic guided wave technology shows a good prospect in the long distance and large-scale structure of the non-destructive testing and health monitoring, thanks to its advantages such as single-ended excitation, long propagation distance, 100% detection of cross section.Constrained by theory and instrumentation technology, ultrasonic guided wave is basically only used for defect screening, ultrasonic guided wave quantitative detection technology has not been widely studied and applied.Aiming at the quantitative analysis of defect size problem in guided wave inspection, it proposes a method based on matching pursuit for quantifying the severity of pipeline defect along axial direction.By analyzing the characteristics of the echo signal, the optimized dictionary is constructed to efficiently decompose the edge reflection components from defect reflection signal.The axial extent of defect can be then quantitatively evaluated by using obtained information.Algorithm validation experiments of finite element numerical simulation as well as detecting the artificial defects in the aluminum pipe by using MSGW magnetostrictive guided wave detector show that the algorithm of error is less than 5%.

Abstract:In the production and service of pipelines, automated electromagnetic detection is widely employed to diagnose potential defects. However, the single inspection method can hardly multiposition detect detection simultaneously due to limited signal features. In this article, a novel composite approach of electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) and eddy current (EC) is proposed to detect different kinds of defects by combining their technical merits. A comprehensive theoretical analysis of the composite approach is given to derive the modified model of the send-receive mode. The influences of the critical parameters on hybrid signals are discussed and the probe performance is improved by over 65% in magnitude. Then, the time-division multiplexing strategy is utilized to separate hybrid signals. Finally, laboratory experiments are conducted to extract independent features and diagnose potential defects in the steel plate. Results indicated that the proposed approach could achieve a good performance in the detection task of inner and outer defects. Compared with existing detection methods, our proposed approach has significant merits in detectability and efficiency.

Abstract:Nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques are widely used for inspection and evaluation of conductive materials. However, a single physical mechanism sensing cannot simultaneously satisfy multiple inspection requirements. In this article, we propose a hybrid transducer based on magnetic flux leakage (MFL) and electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for synchronous detection of surface and internal defects. In the proposed hybrid transducer, both MFL and EMAT share a common magnetic field. The magnetic circuit characteristics of the MFL and EMAT principles are fully exploited, and the magnetic field provided by a single permanent magnet is used to excite ultrasonic waves that can detect internal defects within the sample. Iron is used to introduce a magnetic field into the sample and provide a horizontal magnetic field to detect discontinuities on the near surface of the sample. The huge frequency difference between the MFL signal and the EMAT signal effectively suppresses interference between the two signals. Simulations and experiments have been undertaken to show that the proposed transducer can overcome the detection limitations associated with the MFL and the dead detection zone of the EMAT while simultaneously detecting surface defects, internal defects, and bottom thinning defects in the specimen.

Abstract:Eddy current testing (ET) and eddy current thermography (ECT) are both important nondestructive testing methods that have been widely used in the field of conductive materials evaluation. Conventional ECT systems have often employed to test static specimens even though they are inefficient when the specimen is large. In addition, the requirement of high-power excitation sources tends to result in bulky detection systems. To mitigate these problems, in this article, a moving detection mode of multiphysics structured ET and ECT is proposed in which a novel L-shape ferrite magnetic yoke circumambulated with array coils is designed. The theoretical derivation model of the proposed method is developed which is shown to improve the detection efficiency without compromising the excitation current by ECT. The specimens can be speedily evaluated by scanning at a speed of 50-250 mm/s while reducing the power of the excitation current due to the supplement of ET. The unique design of the excitation-receiving structure has also enhanced the detectability of omnidirectional cracks. Moreover, it does not block the normal direction visual capture of the specimens. Both numerical simulations and experimental studies on different defects have been carried out and the obtained results have shown the reliability and detection efficiency of the proposed system.

Abstract:Ultrasonic testing (UT) and eddy current testing (ECT) are the effective nondestructive testing methods which are widely used in many practical fields, such as machinery, power system, airplane and petrochemical industries. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages in the practical application. We use data fusion method that is based on the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory and the fuzzy inference and the data from eddy-current testing and ultrasonic testing to evaluate the defects in the conductive structure, and better results have been obtained.

Abstract:An integrative nondestructive testing (NDT) method based on the eddy current testing (ECT) and ultrasound testing (UT) was analyzed for the problem of limited detection accuracy and range of single detection method for conductive structure sub-surface defects inspection.The techniques for calculating the ECT/UT basic probability distribution, the distribution of weights of evidence and the evidence fusion to obtain accurate identification results were investigated in order to solve the problem of heterogeneous evidence confliction and to fully exploit the advantages of individual modality detection method.A data fusion method based on fitting variance optimized D-S evidence theory was proposed.A normal fitting method based on the Akaike information criterion (AIC) was conducted to gain the basic probability distribution curve of ECT/UT data in order to reduce fitting errors and prevent over-fitting problems.The Bayesian criteria were used to calculate the posterior probability according to the applicability of ECT/UT in the detection.The fitting variance was used for evidence weight optimization.The joint probability density distribution was obtained by D-S evidence theory.The ECT/UT integrative test result was calculated.

Abstract:With the development of the petrochemical industry, pipeline inspection technology plays a vital role in terms of avoiding explosions and protecting people's life and property. Pipelines working in high-temperature environments suffer from dual dangers of internal and external wall defects. It is often difficult to find a single nondestructive testing (NDT) method that can cover internal and external defects detection especially in high-temperature environments. In order to discover pipeline defects in time, we propose a hybrid online monitoring method for comprehensive defects inspection in high-temperature environments. This hybrid monitoring method combines eddy current testing (ECT) with electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) techniques. Specifically, we split the coil signal into two channels; one channel gives ECT signal and the other gives EMAT signal; furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed hybrid monitoring method by numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The results show that the proposed hybrid online monitoring method can be used successfully to simultaneously monitor surface and internal defects and has high stability even at temperatures above 300 °C. Our approach achieves the genuine integration of ECT/EMAT technologies, effectively addressing the challenge of incomplete monitoring of pipeline defects in high-temperature environments.

Abstract:It is found that the electromagnetic acoustic testing (EMAT) signal itself contains part of the pulsed eddy current testing (PECT) signal. Therefore, if the pulsed eddy current signal embedded in the electromagnetic ultrasound signal can be effectively extracted and used, the hybrid nondestructive testing method of electromagnetic ultrasound and pulsed eddy current can be truly realized. Based on the above concept, the authors have obtained some preliminary results through simple signal processing try, and which gave us a promising hope of this hybrid method. To further verify the validity and strengthen the usability of the hybrid method, more effective signal separation and extraction way to the hybrid detection signals is expected, which is the core step. In this study, a new signal separation and extraction method is proposed for the hybrid detection signals in the PECT/EMAT nondestructive testing method based on wavelet analysis strategy. The effectiveness and merits of the proposed signal separation method compared to the previous way is verified through the numerical simulation as well as experiment.

Abstract:Eddy current testing (ECT) is a widely used nondestructive testing method in many such fields as the power system, railway, machinery, aircraft and nuclear industries. Because of the limitation of penetration depth of the conventional eddy currents testing coils and other affecting factors existing in the eddy current response, inverse problems to evaluate the deep defects from ECT signals of the conductive materials have been a challenging task. The objectives of this study are to introduce methods based on the fuzzy Bayesian networks (BNs), and the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensors to estimate the deep defects from their ECT signals. The experimental validation carried out on the specimens with different known defects confirmed the suitability of the proposed approach for deep defects evaluation.

Abstract:In the field of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of solid metal materials, it has been a challenge to detect surface and internal defects simultaneously by using a single physical mechanism technique. Conventionally, different testing techniques, in which each one is particularly sensitive to a certain type of defect, are employed to gain full defect information. However, a separated testing method is always a time-consuming and laborious work. Here, we report a magnetoelectric-ultrasonic hybrid transducer and multimodal system for quantitative NDE of metal, which integrates a magnetoelectric composite wrapped with a coil for generating alternating current field and simultaneously measuring magnetic abnormal of surface defects (referred to as ME-ACFM) and a dual-piezoceramic ultrasonic transducer (DP-UT) for generating acoustic pulses and detecting the echo signal of internal defects, respectively. A bipulse signal with different pulse widths is used for excitation of the hybrid transducer, in which one is corresponded to the resonant frequencies of 5 MHz for DP-UT, and another to 122 kHz for ME-ACFM. The huge difference between two resonant frequencies is helpful for restraining signal interference each other. Experimental investigations show that when scanning the tested specimens (standard steel No.45 and aluminum plates), the surface and internal defects information can be obtained simultaneously almost without a dead zone. The surface defect resolutions of 0.1 mm width and 0.1 mm depth, and the inside defect resolution of 2 mm blind hole are obtained; the experimental errors for surface defect (crack) depth up to 5 mm are around 5 %; while experimental errors for ultrasonic depth measurement (with a blind zone of 1.25 mm) is less than 0.63 mm. The proposed hybrid transducer and multimodal system open up a new way for designing multi-physical mechanism based NDEs.

Traditional Eddy Current⁻Pulsed Eddy Current Fusion Diagnostic Technique for Multiple Micro-Cracks in Metals

Abstract:Due to a harsh working environment, micro-cracks in metal structures (e.g., airplane, oil/gas pipeline, hydro-turbine) often lead to serious accidents, so health monitoring of the metals is of great significance to ensure their safe operation. However, it is hard to perform quantitative detection of multiple micro-cracks by a single nondestructive testing (NDT) technique because of their limits. To monitor for multiple micro-cracks in metals, a Traditional Eddy Current (TEC) and Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) fusion NDT technique is proposed in this paper. In the proposed technique, the TEC technique is adopted to seek the locations of the micro-cracks in the whole of the metal, while the PEC technique is adopted to acquire information on the depth of micro-cracks automatically according to the location information by the TEC. The experiments indicate that the TEC⁻PEC fusion NDT system can localize the micro-cracks as well as detect the micro-cracks quantitatively and automatically; therefore, it can be applied in structural health monitoring of metal equipment or in picking candidate components in re-manufacturing engineering.

Abstract:Owing to the challenging working conditions aboard ships, equipment may develop various defects that traditional nondestructive testing methods cannot fully detect. This study proposes a combined approach using pulsed eddy current and electromagnetic ultrasonic testing for enhanced probe detection. Utilizing COMSOL 6.2 finite-element software, a two-dimensional model of the probe was developed to optimize the probe’s design. Based on these findings, a composite probe was designed and structurally optimized, resulting in improved energy conversion efficiency. An experimental platform was established to evaluate the detection capabilities of the composite detection probes. The results indicate that the composite detection probe, as designed and optimized in this study, is effective in testing materials with various artificial defects and enhances the detection of near-surface defects in materials.

Abstract:Millions of miles of pipes are being used in both civil and industrial fields. Spiral-welded pipes, which are widely applied in fields such as drainage, architecture as well as oil and gas storage and transportation, are difficult to inspect due to their complex geometry. Guided waves have shown a great potential in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for such cases. Flexural guided waves that propagate at a helix angle relative to the axial direction of pipe, are the most appropriate modes for inspecting spiral-welded pipes. The classical Normal Mode Expansion method (NME) is adopted to disseminate the forced response and perturbation analysis of a steel pipe with respect to a time delay circular loading. A time delay circular array transducer (TDCAT) is proposed for the purpose of exciting pure flexural mode in pipes. Pure flexural mode can be excited when the time delay parameter is specifically designed. The theoretical prediction is verified by finite element numerical evaluation and spiral-welded pipe inspection experiment.
Investigation of pipe thickness monitoring using the shear wave EMAT technology with high lift-off distance

Abstract:To solve the problem of pipe thickness on-line nondestructive testing in the explosive surroundings of oil refinery area,a novel EMAT system with maximum lift-off value of 6 mm has been developed in the way of focusing magnetic field and optimizing the testing coil.Experiment results show that the testing accuracy was less than 0.05 mm for standard test block with thickness of 22 mm and the serviced pipeline with thickness of 12.16 mm when the condition of lift-off value was less than 6 mm.The developed EMAT system in this work can satisfy the requirement of pipeline thickness detection in the refining factory,which provides the ability of explosion-proof design and certification for EMAT technology.

Abstract:Traditional magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection technology is limited to single direction defect detection, which will lead to missed detection and bring great hidden danger to pipeline safety assessment. This paper proposes a new structured multiphysics sensing of merging Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) and MFL within a multi-parameter system for different defects detection. In particular, a novel electromagnetic coupling sensor structure is proposed, which enables simultaneous interaction between the excitation modes of Yoke and coil. Magnetic Yoke is integrated to magnetizing the axial pipeline to detect the circumferential defects while the coil excites the circumferential uniform alternating current field and recognizes the axial defect. The novel structured sensing is highly sensitive to the detection of both Circumferential and Longitudinal defects. Simulation and experiments on defects in several samples have been conducted to validate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed system.
A Complementary Fusion-Based Multimodal Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation Using Phased-Array Ultrasonic and Pulsed Thermography on a Composite Structure

Abstract:Combinative methodologies have the potential to address the drawbacks of unimodal non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT & E) when inspecting multilayer structures. The aim of this study is to investigate the integration of information gathered via phased-array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) and pulsed thermography (PT), addressing the challenges posed by surface-level anomalies in PAUT and the limited deep penetration in PT. A center-of-mass-based registration method was proposed to align shapeless inspection results in consecutive insertions. Subsequently, the aligned inspection images were merged using complementary techniques, including maximum, weighted-averaging, depth-driven combination (DDC), and wavelet decomposition. The results indicated that although individual inspections may have lower mean absolute error (MAE) ratings than fused images, the use of complementary fusion improved defect identification in the total number of detections across numerous layers of the structure. Detection errors are analyzed, and a tendency to overestimate defect sizes is revealed with individual inspection methods. This study concludes that complementary fusion provides a more comprehensive understanding of overall defect detection throughout the thickness, highlighting the importance of leveraging multiple modalities for improved inspection outcomes in structural analysis.

Abstract:High-speed inspection of defects on thick-wall steel pipes is important to pipeline inline inspection (ILI) in the oil and gas industry. Traditional inspection methods are limited by the main challenges of inspection principle, sensor design and instrument implementation, resulting in these methods hardly applicable to practical high-speed pipeline ILI. This paper proposes a novel high-speed inspection method fusing pulsed eddy current (PEC) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) to detect sub-surface defects. When the ferromagnetic steel pipes are magnetized by an applied strong DC magnetic field to saturation status, the existence of sub-surface defects will cause leaked magnetic fields and non-uniform permeability distributions, which can be measured by Hall effect sensors and PEC coil sensors, respectively. A fusion inspection probe containing four-channel Hall effect sensors and two-channel PEC coil sensors is designed and developed here for measuring three-axis MFL signals and 2-D PEC signals simultaneously. A novel high-speed pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) with a sensor array containing 45 fusion inspection probes is developed for field testing to validate the proposed method that achieved superior detection capability in high inspection speed.
Deconvolution Imaging of Weak Reflective Pipe Defects Using Guided-Wave Signals Captured by a Scanning Receiver

Abstract:Guided-wave echoes from weak reflective pipe defects are usually interfered by coherent noise and difficult to interpret. In this paper, a deconvolution imaging method is proposed to reconstruct defect images from synthetically focused guided-wave signals, with enhanced axial resolution. A compact transducer, circumferentially scanning around the pipe, is used to receive guided-wave echoes from discontinuities at a distance. This method achieves a higher circumferential sampling density than arrayed transducers—up to 72 sampling spots per lap for a pipe with a diameter of 180 mm. A noise suppression technique is used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The enhancement in both signal-to-noise ratio and axial resolution of the method is experimentally validated by the detection of two kinds of artificial defects: a pitting defect of 5 mm in diameter and 0.9 mm in maximum depth, and iron pieces attached to the pipe surface. A reconstructed image of the pitting defect is obtained with a 5.87 dB signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that a high circumferential sampling density is important for the enhancement of the inspection sensitivity, by comparing the images reconstructed with different down-sampling ratios. A modified full width at half maximum is used as the criterion to evaluate the circumferential extent of the region where iron pieces are attached, which is applicable for defects with inhomogeneous reflection intensity.

Abstract:Nowadays, there are 160000 kilometers of pipelines in China. How to get more pipeline information in pipeline integrity management is a vitally important research topic. This paper designs a magnetoelectric composite sensor which is suitable for the non-destructive detection of the buried pipeline. according to the defect characteristics. this paper introduces the working principle, structure and characteristics of the composite sensor. Combined with the advantages of the magnetic sensor which is sensitive to the volume defects of the tube wall and the high frequency eddy current sensor which is sensitive to the near-surface defects of the tube wall on the principle of magnetic flux leakage, it realizes the identification and evaluation of the inner and outer wall defects of the tube wall. In this paper, the pipeline in the traction test field is taken as the test object. The test results show that there are 37 defects picked up by the magnetic sensor and 19 defects judged by the eddy current sensor.
Composite Sensor of EMAT and ECT Using a Shareable Receiver Coil for Detecting Surface and Bottom Defects on the Steel Plate

Abstract:Compared with the current single inspection method, composite inspection methods have better capabilities in terms of accuracy and completeness for defect detection. The combination of eddy current testing (ECT) sensor and electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is widely used to detect compound location defects. However, the method usually requires independently distributed sensor systems or complex signal processing algorithms, which increases the complexity of sensing systems. To tackle the problems, in this article, a composite sensor is designed using a shareable receiver coil. First, the work reports the commonality of detection principles and explores the mutual effects between the two detection methods. Second, a conical coil and a multilayer magnet configuration are designed to improve the sensing performance. Finally, the superiority of sensor performance is verified through experiments. The independent features of EMAT signals and ECT signals are easily extracted to detect bottom and surface defects using the filtering tool. Results showed that our composite sensor can increase the signal magnitude of EMATs by 49.7% and improve the capability of ECT in detecting surface defects up to 8 mm deep. Our work could provide a feasible idea for miniaturized sensor design and physical field reuse.
