Abstract:Sulfonated poly (aryl ether ketone sulfone) polymers (SPAEKS-PSA X) with the comb-shaped structure were prepared by grafting with 1, 3-propanesultone (PSA). The successful synthesis of SPAEKS-PSA X was confirmed by the FT-IR spectra. The morphology of the membrane was investigated by the small angle X-ray scattering and the transmission electron microscopy. The nanophase separation was brought in a comb-shaped structure between the main chains and the propyl sulfonic acid groups. The SPAEKS-PSA 15 membrane exhibited the highest conductivity of 101 mS cm(-1) under 80 degrees C and 100% relative humidity conditions (100% RH). In addition, the methanol permeability coefficients of SPAEKS-PSA X membranes (7.56 x 10(-7) to 9.44 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) were much lower compared to Nafion (R) 117 (22.37 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)). Meanwhile, the SPAEKS-PSA X membranes also displayed excellent mechanical properties (tensile modulus >30 MPa), thermal, oxidative stabilities and fuel cell performance. Considering the parameters above, especially the elevated proton conductivities as well as high methanol resistance, the comb-shaped structure is a promising design for DMFCs applications. Novel Cross-Linked Anion Exchange Membranes with Diamines As Ionic Exchange Functional Groups and Crosslinking Groups

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.
Performance Comparison of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells with Nafion and Aquivion Perfluorosulfonic Acids with Different Equivalent Weights as the Electrode Binders

Abstract:A perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer, used as the proton conductor in the catalyst layer, influences significantly the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell catalyst-coated membrane (CCM). In this paper, SSC-CCM is prepared by the SSC-PFSA (Aquivion, EW 720) ionomer, and the comparative sample (LSC-CCM) is based on the LSC-PFSA ionomer (Nafion, EW 1100). Compared with LSC-CCM, SSC-CCM shows higher porosity, larger electrochemical surface area (ECSA), and smaller high-frequency resistance. Polarization curves of SSC-CCM tested by the short stack show better performance than those of LSC-CCM, especially under the lower relative humidity operations. Moreover, the SSC-CCM outputs higher voltage and is more stable in the dynamic process with temperature continuously increasing under lower relative humidity operation. Such excellent performance of SSC-CCM is confirmed from the higher proton conductivity of SSC-PFSA under low relative humidity. These results indicate that the SSC-PFSA ionomer could be employed for the CCM catalyst layer under the operation conditions of low relative humidity and dynamic running for automotive applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Performance analysis of short-side-chain Aquivion® perfluorosulfonic acid polymer for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

Abstract:An Aquivion® E87-12S short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (SSC-PFSA) membrane with equivalent weight (EW) of 870g/eq and 120μm thickness produced by Solvay Specialty Polymers was tested in a polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). For comparison, a benchmark Nafion® N115 membrane (EW 1100g/eq) of similar thickness was investigated under similar operating conditions. Both membranes were tested in conjunction with in-house prepared unsupported IrO2 anode and carbon-supported Pt cathode electrocatalysts. The electrocatalysts consisted of nanosized IrO2 and Pt particles (particle size ~2–4nm). Electrochemical tests showed better water splitting performance for the Aquivion® membrane and ionomer based membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) as compared to Nafion®. Lower ohmic drop constraints and smaller polarization resistance were observed for the electrocatalyst–Aquivion® ionomer interface indicating a better catalyst–electrolyte interface. A current density of 3.2Acm−2 for water electrolysis was recorded at 1.8V cell voltage and 90°C with the Aquivion® based MEA. Some performance decay with time was observed indicating that the system requires further optimization of the interface characteristics.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have recently attracted significant attention as low-cost alternative fuel cells to traditional proton exchange membrane fuel cells due to the possible use of platinum-group metal-free electrocatalysts [1]. Over the past decade, new materials dedicated to the alkaline medium, such as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and anion exchange ionomers (AEIs), have been developed and studied in AEMFCs [2, 3]. However, only a few AEMs and AEIs are commercially available, and there are not ready to use catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) and/or gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) with the wished AEMs or AEIs. In order to manufacture CCMs and/or GDEs on the basis of commercial materials, catalyst inks need to be prepared before testing them in AEMFC. It is well known that the composition of catalytic ink and the way to deposit it can influence the interaction between solvent, ionomer and catalyst particles during solvent evaporation and thus on the final structure and morphology of the catalyst layer. However, there are only a few papers dealing with catalyst layer compositions and structures for AEMFCs [4, 5], probably due to the recent development of alkaline fuel cells and new dedicated materials such as AEM and AEI. Since the ionomer/catalyst particle interface plays a crucial role in electrochemical reactions, it is essential to understand the impact of ionomer content on AEMFC performance as well as on water management. For this purpose, catalytic inks were prepared with different amounts of ionomer, ranging from 13 to 33 % in ratio. During this work, Pt / C (40 % in wt) catalyst as well as Aemion ® membranes and ionomers were used. Different CCMs and GDEs were manufactured at 60 °C using a commercial ultrasonic spray coating bench. The morphology of the catalyst layers was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the thickness of the deposition was measured by a profilometer. Before testing in AEMFC, all prepared samples and membranes were converted to OH - form for 48 h in KOH 3M (the solution was changed every 12h). The performance of the prepared CCMs and GDEs was studied in a home-made AEMFC bench after an activation step. The results shown in Fig.1 highlight that: (i) the ionomer content in the catalyst layers affects the performance of the fuel cell, regardless of the coated support (membrane or GDL), (ii) concerning CCMs-based MEAs, the lower the ionomer content, the better the performance via the polarization curve, (iii) CCMs and GDEs-based MEAs do not behave similarly, (iv) GDEs-based MEAs show high OCV and high voltage for a given current density in comparison with CCMs-based MEAs, (v) concerning GDEs-based MEAs, the variation of the ionomer content in catalyst layer affects less the OCV value than the water management, and (vi) the water management of GDEs-based MEAs seems depend on the relative humidity of both gases and ionomer content in catalyst layers. Abstract:Within the past years, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have become more and more attractive due to their potential for the transition towards an environmentally friendly hydrogen economy. Especially by reducing the platinum catalyst loading, significant system cost reductions could be achieved, but low Pt loadings still lead to unassigned voltage losses during operation. [1,2] In order to overcome those losses, well-designed catalyst layers with optimized ionomer content and distribution are indispensable. The used perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers for PEM fuel cells are commonly characterized by the chemical structure of the ionomer and the equivalent weight (EW), which strongly affects the proton conductivity. [3,4] Current research focusses on the synthesis of modified ionomers with higher oxygen permeability to reduce mass transport losses, but also investigates the influence of the ionomer’s molecular weight (MW). [1,5,6] A high MW minimizes the water uptake of the ionomer/membrane in liquid water, which is desired for the use in PEM fuel cells to reduce mechanical stress during relative humidity (RH) cycling. [5] The exact MW of an ionomer is not easily accessible, but can be estimated by measuring the melt flow index (MFI), whereas a high MW is commonly reflected by a lower MFI if the ionomer chemistry and EW are the same. Within this study, a 3M ionomer modified to have a high MFI of 156 g/10 min (measured at 265 °C with a mass of 5 kg) is investigated and compared to a 3M standard ionomer with a low MFI of 6 g/10 min. Both PFSA ionomers have the same chemical structure and a similar EW of ~800. The significantly higher MFI of the modified ionomer (i.e., comprising a lower MW) is clearly reflected by a ~2 times higher water uptake compared to the 3M standard ionomer (measured for solution-cast membranes in liquid water at 80 °C). To evaluate the impact of the MFI within the cathode electrode, 5 cm2 active area membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with these two ionomers at various ionomer/carbon (I/C) mass ratios in the cathode electrode (based on a 40 wt.% Pt/Vulcan catalyst at loadings of 0.11 mg Pt /cm2) are manufactured and electrochemically characterized. At sufficiently high I/C ratios and under humid operation (i.e., I/C = 0.90 and 90 % RH), differential flow H 2 /air polarization curves of the MEAs reveal that the higher liquid water uptake of the 3M high-MFI ionomer can be correlated with a lower cell voltage (see Figure 1). Contrary to the MEAs with the 3M low-MFI standard ionomer, the larger ionomer swelling in MEAs with the 3M high-MFI ionomer reduces the void volume fraction in the electrode structure during operation. Most pronounced at high current densities, where oxygen mass transport plays an important role, the MEAs containing the 3M high-MFI ionomer show a significant voltage loss of ~50 mV at 2.5 A/cm2 compared to the MEAs with the 3M low-MFI ionomer. This study demonstrates that the effect of ionomer volume expansion upon changes in the MFI and thus the MW might not be crucial for the MEA performance when using electrodes with a low I/C ratio, but is critical when aiming for electrode compositions with a high ionomer content, in which case a low-MFI (i.e., a high MW) ionomer should be favorable. Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the intermolecular interactions and diffusion behavior in deep eutectic solvent (DES)-supported poly(acrylate) (PAA) systems, with a focus on enhancing hydronium (H 3 O + ) ion mobility for proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) in fuel cells. Using classical all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the interactions within pure DES-supported PAA and hydrated DES-supported PAA matrices at hydration levels (HLs) 3 and 9. Radial distribution functions (RDFs) revealed significant interactions between the oxygen atoms of PAA and hydrogen atoms of DES components, with distinct variations at different HLs. Interaction energy calculations highlighted the evolving strengths of PAA-DES interactions, especially with choline, chloride, and urea, under varying hydration conditions. Diffusion coefficients indicated substantial enhancements in the mobility of H 3 O + ions and water molecules with increasing hydration, essential for effective proton transport. These findings underscore the critical role of water in facilitating dynamic restructuring and efficient proton conduction within the DES-supported PAA matrix, offering valuable insights for the development of advanced PEMs with tailored properties for fuel cell applications.

Fluorinated poly(p-triphenyl piperidine) anion exchange membranes with robust dimensional stability for fuel cells

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which are more economical than proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), stand out in the context of the rapid development of renewable energy. Superacid-catalyzed ether-free aromatic polymers have recently received a lot of attention due to their exceptional performance, but their development has been hampered by the trade-off between the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, we introduced fluoroketones containing different numbers of fluorinated groups (x = 0, 3 and 6) in the main chain of p-terphenyl piperidine because of the favorable hydrophobic properties of fluorinated groups. The results show that fluorinated AEMs can enhance OH − conductivity by building more aggregated hydrophilic channels while ensuring dimensional stability. The PTF6-QAPTP AEM with more fluorinated groups has the most excellent performance at 80 °C with an OH − conductivity of 142.7 mS cm −1 and a swelling ratio (SR) of only 4.55 %. Additionally, it exhibits good alkali durability, with the OH − conductivity and quaternary ammonium (QA) cation retaining at 93.45% and 92.6%, respectively, after immersion in a 2 M NaOH solution at 80 °C for 1200 h. In addition, the power density of the PTF6-QAPTP based single cell reaches 849 mW cm −2 when the current density is 1600 mA cm −2 . The PTF6-QAPTP based cell has a voltage retention of 88% after 80 h of stability testing at a constant current density of 300 mA cm −2 at 80 °C.

Ink Solvent Dependence of the Ionomer Distribution in the Catalyst Layer of a PEMFC

Abstract:This study examines the effect of ink composition on the ionomer distribution in the catalyst layer of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) prepared by decal transfer. We combine both structural and electrochemical characterization techniques to investigate the inﬂuence of the ionomer distribution on MEA performance determined by 50 cm 2 active area single-cell proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell measurements. Cathodic catalyst layers were prepared from inks with different alcohols (1-propanol or 2-propanol) and varying water content (16–65 wt% H 2 O). The H 2 /air performance of cathode catalyst layers prepared from the different inks with 700 EW ionomer differed drastically, particularly under wet operating conditions, whereby the best performance was obtained for an ink based on 16 wt% H 2 O in 1-propanol. This was successfully correlated with the observation of ionomer patches at the cathode electrode surface (i.e., the surface facing thediffusionmedium) determinedbyscanning electron microscopy (SEM),with N 2 adsorption analysis of the electrodes using a QSDFT model, and with dynamic light scattering data of ionomer/solvent mixtures. No correlation could be obtained between H 2 /air performance and the proton conductivity of the cathodes obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and a model to rationalize this behavior will be proposed.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have emerged as one of the most promising next-generation energy devices for both passenger-owned and heavy-duty vehicles due to their high energy efficiency, low emissions, and quiet operation. However, the performance of the fuel cell electrode is often limited by the strong specific adsorption of long sidechain (LSC) perfluoro-sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer onto the platinum (Pt) catalyst 2 , which results in a decrease in the electrocatalytic activity 1 as well as increase oxygen mass transport resistenace at the MEA level. To address this issue, a short sidechain (SSC) ionomer has been developed, which has been found to exhibit excellent efficiency over LSC ionomer 3 The reduced specific adsorption of SSC ionomer onto the Pt catalyst results in a higher available surface area for the electrochemical reaction, which improves the overall fuel cell performance. The sidechain length of ionomers plays a crucial role in determining the overall cell performance 4 however, due to the differences between them, the interactions among slurry components are not yet fully understood. Unlike the previous literatures, we investigates the details of ionomer sidechain length and its impact on the interaction among slurry components and resulting electrode microstructure, through a comparative analysis of LSC and SSC ionomers. 5 Our hypothesis propose that the physical interactions between components are considerably impacted by the sidechains with a specific emphasis on the mobility and ion-pair association in the slurry. To probe the influence of ionomer sidechains, we conducted a thorough investigation wherein incrementally varied its concentration from 0 to 1.5 mmol SO3- g C -1 , at intervals of 0.3 mmol SO3- g C -1 . The main purpose of this evaluation was to observe the evolution of particle aggregation according to the correlation between adsorbed ionomer and free ionomer in electrode slurry. Drawing from the U-shaped viscosity profile obtained through rheological measurements, we propose an optimized ionomer concentration of 0.6 mmol SO3- g C -1 for the SSC ionomer-based slurry and 0.9 mmol SO3- g C -1 for the LSC ionomer-based slurry. To characterize the microstructure of the as-prepared electrode, we employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy, with a focus on particle agglomeration and the homogeneous ionomer distribution. Finally, the electrochemical analysis was performed on the fabricated membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in a 25 cm2 single cell for a cathode Pt loading of 0.1 mg Pt cm−2. As a result, the optimized SSC ionomer-based electrode exhibited low local O2 transport resistance and high Pt utilization, leading to over a 40 % enhancement in fuel cell performance at 0.6 V with a high proton accessibility value above 0.85 when compared to the optimized LSC ionomer-based electrode. This study highlights the crucial importance of understanding the effects of ionomer sidechain length on electrode slurry interactions and microstructure and establishes a significant correlation between them. Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have recently attracted significant attention as low-cost alternative fuel cells to traditional proton exchange membrane fuel cells because of the possible use of platinum-group metal-free electrocatalysts. Over the past decade, new materials dedicated to the alkaline medium, such as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and anion exchange ionomers (AEIs), have been developed and studied in AEMFCs. However, only a few AEMs and AEIs are commercially available, and there are no ready-to-use membrane electrodes assemblies (MEAs) with the desired AEMs and AEIs. Consequently, the need to manufacture in-house CCMs or GDEs becomes a reality that we must face. This work deals with the influence of ionomer content on the prepared MEAs with the commercial anion exchange membrane and ionomer from Aemion™ Ionomr Innovations AF1-HNN8-2 and AP1-ENN8/HNN8 respectively and by varying the support (gas diffusion layer or membrane). The prepared MEAs were characterized morphologically by SEM and profilometry, as well as electrochemically by AEMFC polarization curves and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, an attempt to investigate water management was made with and without a reference electrode in the cell to understand the behavior of water in an operating AEMFC. Our results show that CCM-based MEAs can undergo deformation during the anion conversion step, leading to weakening of the membrane and hence faster degradation in the fuel cell. On the contrary, no deformation was observed for the GDEs during the anionic conversion, although the results are poorer due to (i) poor interface contact between membrane and GDE that depends on ionomer ratio in the ink and (ii) a high overpotential at the anode due to the production of water that cannot be effectively evacuated.

Abstract:Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) is widely used as the membrane material for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, and its mechanical properties directly affect the stability and the life of the internal structure of the proton exchange membrane. In the present research, mechanical behaviors of hydrated membranes are investigated through macro-mechanical experiments and nano-simulation. The commercial products of Nafion® 117 and Nafion® 212 are used as tensile testing samples, and the latter manifests a larger swelling ratio, smaller linear-elastic region, and higher Young's modulus at the same humidity. It is found that in comparison to Nafion 117, humidity (especially at less than 9 wt%) yields profound effects on true stress–true strain curves of Nafion 212. Further, two types of PFSA ionomers, representing the nanoscale parts of Nafion and Aquivion membranes, respectively, are studied on the uniaxial tensile deformation through molecular dynamics simulation, and the effects of side chain, water content, backbone length, and strain rate are examined. It is noticed that long side chains decrease the winding degree of polymer chains for the PFSA ionomers with the same backbone, and pinhole failure causes the declining trend of stress–strain curves. For meso- and nano-scale PFSA polymers, the difference between the volume of uptake water and swelling volume can be used to roughly judge the aggregation degree of polymer chains and explain the elastic–plastic deformation mechanism. The results of this work will serve as a baseline for understanding the swelling and mechanical behavior of PFSA membranes.

Abstract:The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the key component for hydrogen fuel cells (FCs). We used in situ synchrotron scattering to investigate the PEM morphology evolution and found a "stream-reservoir" morphology, which enables efficient proton transport. The short-side-chain (SSC) PFSA PEM is fabricated under the guidance of morphology optimization, which delivered a proton conductivity of 193 milliSiemens per centimeter [95% relativity humidity (RH)] and 40 milliSiemens per centimeter (40% RH) at 80°C. The improved glass transition temperature, water permeability, and mechanical strength enable high-temperature low-humidity FC applications. Performance improvement by 82.3% at 110°C and 25% RH is obtained for SSC-PFSA PEM FCs compared to Nafion polymer PEM devices. The insights in chain conformation, packing mechanism, crystallization, and phase separation of PFSAs build up the structure-property relationship. In addition, SSC-PFSA PEM is ideal for high-temperature low-humidity FCs that are needed urgently for high-power-density and heavy-duty applications.

Abstract:Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers serve a vital role in the performance and stability of fuel-cell catalyst layers. These properties, in turn, depend on the colloidal processing of precursor inks. To understand the colloidal structure of fuel-cell catalyst layers, we explore the aggregation of PFSA ionomers dissolved in water/alcohol solutions and relate the predicted aggregation to experimental measurements of solution pH. Not all side chains contribute to measured pH because of burying inside particle aggregates. To account for the measured degree of dissociation, a new description is developed for how PFSA aggregates interact with each other. The developed single-counterion electrostatic repulsive pair potential from Part I is incorporated into the Smoluchowski collision-based kinetics of interacting aggregates with buried side chains. We demonstrate that the surrounding solvent mixture affects the degree of aggregation as well as the pH of the system primarily through the solution dielectric permittivity, which drives the strength of the interparticle repulsive energies. Successful pH prediction of Nafion ionomer dispersions in water/<i>n</i>-propanol solutions validates the numerical calculations. Nafion-dispersion pH measurements serve as a surrogate for Nafion particle-size distributions. The model and framework can be leveraged to explore different ink formulations.

Abstract:Short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (SSC-PFSA) ionomers with high ion-exchange-capacity are promising candidates for high-temperature proton exchange membranes (PEMs) and catalyst layer (CL) binders. The solution-casting method determines the importance of SSC-PFSA dispersion characteristics in shaping the morphology of PEMs and CLs. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the chain behavior of SSC-PFSA in dispersions is essential for fabricating high-quality PEMs and CLs. In this study, we have employed multiple characterization techniques, including dynamic light scatting (DLS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and cryo-transmission electron microscope (Cryo-TEM), to fully study the chain aggregation behaviors of SSC-PFSA in water-ethanol solvents and elucidate the concentration-dependent self-assembly process. In dilute dispersions (2 mg/mL), SSC-PFSA assembles into mono-disperse rod-like aggregates, featuring a twisted fluorocarbon backbone that forms a hydrophobic stem, and the sulfonic acid side chains extending outward to suit the hydrophilic environment. As the concentration increases, the radius of rod particles increases from 1.47 to 1.81 nm, and the mono-disperse rod particles first form a "end-to-end" configuration that doubles length (10 mg/mL), and then transform into a swollen network structure in semi-dilute dispersion (20 mg/mL). This work provides a well-established structure model for SSC-PFSA dispersions, which is the key nanostructure to be inherited by PEMs.

Abstract:This work investigates ionomers based on sidechain modifications of PFSA in thin‐film motif (≤100 nm) for improved understanding of their chemistry‐property relationships, tuning their interfacial properties, and modulating the electrode function in fuel cells. Introducing acid sites to sidechains improve hydration and phase‐separation but reduce chain mobility, while replacing the hydrophilic end‐groups with hydrophobic perfluoro‐groups enhances mobility but disrupts phase‐separation. Ionomers are important to electrode function in energy conversion devices, such as fuel cells and electrolyzers, as the catalyst‐binding nanometer‐thick films under confinement, which compromises mass transport of species. Mitigating confinement effects is necessary for improved performance of polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Studies on perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers provided insights into origins of transport resistances, but limited improvements by current strategies necessitate a need for alternative chemistries to enhance film function. This work investigates new ionomers based on sidechain modifications of PFSA to tune local acidity and structure. Their application‐relevant properties (hydration, thermal‐transition) and nanomorphology are systematically characterized using environmental ellipsometry and grazing‐incidence X‐ray scattering, respectively, to develop chemistry‐structure‐property relationships in thin‐film motif (≤100 nm). Introducing acid sites to sidechains improves hydration and nano‐phase‐separation but reduce chain mobility. Replacing the hydrophilic end‐groups with hydrophobic perfluoro‐groups enhances mobility but disrupts phase‐separation. Although modifying sidechain functional groups alters ionomer‐substrate interactions (Pt/C), chemistry has greater influence on structure‐properties. Proton conductivity correlates with hydration, regardless of chemistry. This work improves the fundamental understanding of chemistry‐function relationships of ionomers by providing a novel means to independently control their side‐chain vs. end‐group and observe resulting effects on interfacial properties to modulate electrode function in electrochemical technologies.

Abstract:The development of alkaline fuel cells is moving forward at an accelerated pace, and the application of ether-free bonded polymers to anion exchange membranes (AEMs) has been widely investigated. However, the question of the "trade-off" between AEM ionic conductivity and dimensional stability remains difficult. The strategy of inducing microphase separation to improve the performance of AEM has attracted much attention recently, but the design of optimal molecular structures is still being explored. Here, this work introduced different ratios of 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone ( x = 40, 50, and 60) into the main chain of poly(p-terphenylene isatin). Because fluorinated groups have excellent hydrophobicity, hydrophilic hydroxyl-containing side chains are introduced to jointly adjust the formation of phase separation structure. The results show that PTI-PTF 50 -NOH AEM with the appropriate fluorinated group ratio has the best ionic conductivity and alkali stability under the combined effect of both. It has an ionic conductivity of 133.83 mS cm −1 at 80 °C. In addition, the OH − conductivity remains at 89% of the initial value at 80 °C and 3 M KOH for 1056 h of immersion. The cell polarization curve based on PTI-PTF 50 -NOH shows a power density of 734.76 mW cm −2 at a current density of 1807.7 mA cm −2 .

Abstract:Although the properties of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes (10–100 s μm thick) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been well studied for decades, the limited understanding of nano-sized PFSA ionomer within catalyst layer hampers the improvement of ultra-low platinum loading PEMFC. Recently, the vital role of PFSA ionomer in the local transfer of proton, oxygen, and water in fuel cell catalyst layer has been recognized, thus its properties have attracted more attention. In this review, a comprehensive comparison between PFSA bulk membrane and ultrathin PFSA ionomer film is summarized as morphology, physical properties (e.g., water uptake, surface wettability, diffusivity), and mechanical properties (e.g., crystallization, antiplasticization, glass transition point). Afterwards, the characteristics of ionomer in different dispersion media and the microstructure of PFSA ionomer in the formed catalyst layers are illuminated. The proton conduction and mass transport (i.e., oxygen and water) behaviors in the confined PFSA ionomer are focused and highlighted to reveal the ionomer's influence on fuel cell performance. Extrapolating from the insight into structural and transport properties of PFSA ionomer, we are optimistic that the performance of ultralow Pt loading PEMFCs could be greatly improved via modifying ionomer chemical structure and engineering ionomer/catalyst interaction.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) that operate at high pH, offer the advantage of enabling the use of abundant 3d-transition metal-based electrocatalysts. While they have shown remarkable improvement in performance, their long-term durability remains insufficient for practical applications with the alkaline polymer electrolytes (APEs) being the limiting factor. The stability of APEs is generally evaluated in concentrated alkaline solutions, which overlooks/oversimplifies the complex electrochemical environment of the catalyst layer in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) devices. Herein, we report a study of the degradation of the membrane and ionomer independently under realistic H 2 –air (CO 2 free) fuel cell operation, using proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). While the membrane degradation was minimal after the AEMFC stability test, the ionomer in the catalyst layers degraded approximately 20% to 30% with the cathode being more severely affected than the anode. The ionomer degradation decreased the catalyst utilization and significantly increased the ionic resistance, leading to significant performance degradation in the AEMFC stability test. These findings emphasize the importance of ionomer stability and the need to consider the electrochemical environments of MEAs when evaluating the stability of APEs.
