Abstract:The integration of microfluidics with electric field control, commonly referred to as electrofluidics, has led to new opportunities for biomedical analysis. The requirement for closed microcapillary channels in microfluidics, typically formed via complex microlithographic fabrication approaches, limits the direct accessibility to the separation processes during conventional electrofluidic devices. Textile structures provide an alternative and low‐cost approach to overcome these limitations via providing open and surface‐accessible capillary channels. Herein, we investigate the potential of different 3D textile structures for electrofluidics. In this study, 12 polyester yarns were braided around nylon monofilament cores of different diameters to produce functional 3D core–shell textile structures. Capillary electrophoresis performances of these 3D core–shell textile structures both before and after removing the nylon core were evaluated in terms of mobility and bandwidth of a fluorescence marker compound. It was shown that the fibre arrangement and density govern the inherent capillary formation within these textile structures which also impacts upon the solute analyte mobility and separation bandwidth during electrophoretic studies. Core–shell textile structures with a 0.47 mm nylon core exhibited the highest fluorescein mobility and presented a narrower separation bandwidth. This optimal textile structure was readily converted to different geometries via a simple heat‐setting of the central nylon core. This approach can be used to fabricate an array of miniaturized devices that possess many of the basic functionalities required in electrofluidics while maintaining open surface access that is otherwise impractical in classical approaches.

Abstract:Electric field–driven microfluidics, known as electrofluidics, is a novel attractive analytical tool when it is integrated with low‐cost textile substrate. Textile‐based electrofluidics, primarily explored on yarn substrates, is in its early stages, with few studies on 3D structures. Further, textile structures have rarely been used in cellular analysis as a low‐cost alternative. Herein, we investigated novel 3D textile structures and develop optimal electrophoretic designs and conditions that are favourable for direct 3D cell culture integration, developing an integrated cell culture textile‐based electrofluidic platform that was optimised to balance electrokinetic performance and cell viability requirements. Significantly, there were contrasting electrolyte compositional conditions that were required to satisfy cell viability and electrophoretic mobility requiring the development of and electrolyte that satisfied the minimum requirements of both these components within the one platform. Human dermal fibroblast cell cultures were successfully integrated with gelatine methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel‐coated electrofluidic platform and studied under different electric fields using 5 mM TRIS/HEPES/300 mM glucose. Higher analyte mobility was observed on 2.5% GelMA‐coated textile which also facilitated excellent cell attachment, viability and proliferation. Cell viability also increased by decreasing the magnitude and time duration of applied electric field with good cell viability at field of up to 20 V cm−1.

Abstract:By virtue of ultra-flexibility and non-inductive feature, fibrous electrode is an ideal platform for constructing wearable electronics and implantable electrodes for medical therapy. 2D nanofluidic channels with tailored ion transport dynamics enable minimized charge transfer resistance and efficient ion transport capability. Thus, combining the nanofluidic ion transport features and fibrous electrode advantages, 2D nanofluidic fiber electrode presents a series of extra advantages of unidirectional efficient ion transport and great biofriendliness. In this minireview, we first elaborate the architecture characteristics of the emerging 2D nanofluidic fibers and highlight the intriguing features, such as tunable interlayer spacing, efficient ion transport and modifiable channel surface. Conventional strategies for constructing 2D nanofluidic fibers have been systematically enumerated, including solvent volatilizing regulation, confinement triggered alignment, and flow-driven orientation. In addition, the promising applications of 2D nanofluidic fibers have been also summarized as well. Finally, we analyze the challenges and perspectives of fibrous 2D nanofluidic construction, ion transport mechanism study and potential application extension.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Paper and thread are widely used as the substrates for fabricating low-cost, disposable, and portable microfluidic analytical devices used in clinical, environmental, and food safety monitoring. Concerning separation methods including chromatography and electrophoresis, these substrates provide unique platforms for developing portable devices. This review focuses on summarizing recent research on the miniaturization of the separation techniques using paper and thread. Preconcentration, purification, desalination, and separation of various analytes are achievable using electrophoresis and chromatography methods integrated with modified or unmodified paper/thread wicking channels. A variety of 2D and 3D designs of paper/thread platforms for zone electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, and modified/unmodified chromatography are discussed with emphasis on their limitation and improvements. The current progress in the signal amplification strategies such as isoelectric focusing, isotachophoresis, ion concentration polarization, isoelectric focusing, and stacking methods in paper-based devices are reviewed. Different strategies for chromatographic separations based on paper/thread will be explained. The separation of target species from complex samples and their determination by integration with other analytical methods like spectroscopy and electrochemistry are well-listed. Furthermore, the innovations for plasma and cell separation from blood as an important human biofluid are presented, and the related paper/thread modification methods are explored.

Abstract:By integrating ionofibers, a new generation of ionotronics, i‐textiles, can allow for a broad range of in‐air electrochemical applications, especially with bioelectronic interfaces. To meet the fabric manufacturing requirements, ionofibers are produced to ally the mechanical properties of commercial yarns with ionic liquids via dip‐coating by polymerizing in situ thiol–ene networks. With the rise of ion‐based devices using soft ionic conductors, ionotronics show the importance of matching electronic and biological interfaces. Since textiles are conformal, an essential property for matching interfaces, light‐weight and comfortable, they present as an ideal candidate for a new generation of ionotronics, i‐textiles. As fibers are the building blocks of textiles, ionically conductive fibers, named ionofibers, are needed. However, ionofibers are not yet demonstrated to fulfill the fabric manufacturing requirements such as mechanical robustness and upscaled production. Considering that ionogels are known to be conformal films with high ionic conductivity, ionofibers are produced from commercial core yarns with specifically designed ionogel precursor solution via a continuous dip‐coating process. These ionofibers are to be regarded as composites, which keep the morphology and improve the mechanical properties from the core yarns while adding the (ionic) conductive function. They keep their conductivity also after their integration into conformal fabrics; thus, an upscaled production is a likely outlook. The findings offer promising perspectives for i‐textiles with enhanced textile properties and in‐air electrochemical applications.

3D E-textile for Exercise Physiology and Clinical Maternal Health Monitoring

Abstract:Electronic textiles (E-textiles) offer great wearing comfort and unobtrusiveness, thus holding potential for next-generation health monitoring wearables. However, the practical implementation is hampered by challenges associated with poor signal quality, substantial motion artifacts, durability for long-term usage, and non-ideal user experience. Here, we report a cost-effective E-textile system that features 3D microfiber-based electrodes for greatly increasing the surface area. The soft and fluffy conductive microfibers disperse freely and securely adhere to the skin, achieving a low impedance at the electrode-skin interface even in the absence of gel. A superhydrophobic fluorinated self-assembled monolayer was deposited on the E-textile surface to render it waterproof while retaining the electrical conductivity. Equipped with a custom-designed motion-artifact canceling wireless data recording circuit, the E-textile system could be integrated into a variety of smart garments for exercise physiology and health monitoring applications. Real-time multimodal electrophysiological signal monitoring, including electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyography (EMG), was successfully carried out during strenuous cycling and even underwater swimming activities. Furthermore, a multi-channel E-textile was developed and implemented in clinical patient studies for simultaneous real-time monitoring of maternal ECG and uterine EMG signals, incorporating spatial-temporal potential mapping capabilities.

Abstract:Mono-dimensional fiber-based electronics can effectively address the growing demand for improved wearable electronic devices because of their exceptional flexibility and stretchability. For practical applications, functional fiber electronic devices need to be integrated into more powerful and versatile systems to execute complex tasks that cannot be completed by single-fiber devices. Existing techniques, such as printing and sintering, reduce the flexibility and cause low connection strength of fiber-based electronic devices because of the high curvature of the fiber. Here, we outline a twisting fabrication process for fiber electrodes, which can be woven into functional threads and integrated within textiles. The design of the twisted thread structure for fiber devices ensures stable interfacing and good flexibility, while the textile structure features easily accessible, interlaced points for efficient circuit connections. Electronic textiles can be customized to act as displays, health monitors and power sources. We detail three main fabrication sections, including the fabrication of the fiber electrodes, their twisting into electronic threads and their assembly into functional textile-based devices. The procedures require ~10 d and are easily reproducible by researchers with expertise in fabricating energy and electronic devices.

Abstract:A method based on the in situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) has :been developed for the rapid fabrication of a novel separation platform, fiber electrophoresis microchip. To demonstrate the concept, prepolymerized MMA molding solution containing a UV initiator was sandwiched between a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) cover plate and a PMMA base plate bearing glycerol-permeated fiberglass bundles and was exposed to UV light. During the UV-initiated polymerization, the fiberglass bundles were embedded in the PMMA substrate to form fiberglass-packed microchannels. When the glycerol in the fiberglass bundles was flushed away with water, the obtained porous fiberglass-packed channels could be employed to perform electrophoresis separation. Scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) and microscopic images offered insights into the fiber electrophoresis microchip. The analytical performance of the novel microchip has been demonstrated by separating and detecting dopamine and catechol in connection with end-column amperometric detection. The fiber-based microchips can be fabricated by the new approach without the need for complicated and expensive lithography-based microfabrication techniques, indicating great promise for the low-cost production of microchips, and should find a wide range of applications.

Abstract:The fields of flexible electronics and microfluidic-based labs-on-a-chip continue to advance, with new devices and systems-level technologies reported on a daily basis. However, much of this advancement is limited to each of these fields separately, rather than development of platforms for combining flexible electronics and microfluidics together to realize wearable sensors and sensor systems. We present new approaches for combining electronics and microfluidic devices together on wearable textile-based substrates, resulting in combined systems that are highly portable, mechanically flexible, and can be easily integrated with clothing. We develop polymer materials traditionally used for artistic designs on clothing for use as engineering materials, i.e., as the base polymer for conductive electronics that can be integrated with polymer microfluidic channels printed in the same materials. Unlike other techniques, our technologies and materials are highly compatible with clothing-based textiles, and result in non-polarizable electrodes for improved frequency response. Our platforms can be laundered, facilitating rugged wearable devices and systems for biomedical and environmental monitoring. Application areas for our flexible and wearable platforms include health care, worker safety, food safety, consumer devices, personalized medicine and biomedical and environmental monitoring. We present technologies for specific applications that include: lighting and health monitors for safety vests; heart and perspiration (pH, lactate) monitors for athletic clothing; and wearable bioelectric and biochemical monitoring.

Abstract:In the last two decades, several processes have been explored for the development of micro and/or nanostructured substrates by sagely physically and/or chemically manipulating polymer materials. These processes have to be designed to overcome some of the limitations of the traditional ones in terms of feasibility, reproducibility, and sustainability. Herein, the primary aim of this work is to focus on the enormous potential of using a high voltage electric field to manipulate polymers from synthetic and/or natural sources for the fabrication of different devices based on elementary units, i.e., fibers or particles, with different characteristic sizes—from micro to nanoscale. Firstly, basic principles and working mechanisms will be introduced in order to correlate the effect of selected process parameters (i.e., an applied voltage) on the dimensional features of the structures. Secondly, a comprehensive overview of the recent trends and potential uses of these processes will be proposed for different biomedical and bio-sustainable application areas.

Direct Fabrication of Freestanding and Patterned Nanoporous Junctions in a 3D Micro-Nanofluidic Device for Ion-Selective Transport

Abstract:In the field of micro-nanofluidics, a freestanding configuration of a nanoporous junction is highly demanded to increase the design flexibility of the microscale device and the interfacial area between the nanoporous junction and microchannels, thereby improving the functionality and performance. This work first reports direct fabrication and incorporation of a freestanding nanoporous junction in a microfluidic device by performing an electrolyte-assisted electrospinning process to fabricate a freestanding nanofiber membrane and subsequently impregnating the nanofiber membrane with a nanoporous precursor material followed by a solidification process. This process also enables to readily control the geometry of the nanoporous junction depending on its application. By these advantages, vertically stacked 3D micro-nanofluidic devices with complex configurations are easily achieved. To demonstrate the broad applicability of this process in various research fields, a reverse electrodialysis-based energy harvester and an ion concentration polarization-based preconcentrator are produced. The freestanding Nafion-polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber membrane (F-NPNM) energy harvester generates a high power (59.87 nW) owing to the enlarged interfacial area. Besides, 3D multiplexed and multi-stacked F-NPNM preconcentrators accumulate multiple preconcentrated plugs that can increase the operating sample volume and the degree of freedom of handling. Hence, the proposed process is expected to contribute to numerous research fields related to micro-nanofluidics in the future.

Abstract:E-textiles are of interest in a variety of fields, such as wearable electronics and real-time healthcare monitoring. Critical challenges remain, related to design and fabrication techniques to meet the varied requirements for e-textiles. As an ancient and incomparable textile fiber, natural silk fibers can be considered to address these issues. However, processing challenges have thus far precluded the realization of electrically conducting natural silks. Here, we report a scalable dip-coating strategy to construct conductive silk fibers (CSFs). Natural silk fibers were functionalized by a tailor-made carbon nanotube (CNT) paint, which selectively etches the surface of the silk fibers without destroying the internal structure of the fibers. The CSFs maintained the properties of both the silks and CNTs, with high mechanical performance, super-hydrophobicity, solvent resistance, and thermal sensitivity. The CSFs can be automatically woven into fabrics, resulting in textiles sensitive to surrounding physical stimuli, including force, strain, temperature, and solvents.

Abstract:Textile materials are used to produce open microfluidic systems without large-scale microfabrication. Sacrificial monofilament pull-out is one technique for creating closed microfluidic systems. However, removing sacrificial monofilament is manual and does not allow large-scale production. This work combines this technique with the possibilities of the large-scale output offered by weaving technologies to produce a closed microfluidic system with the minimal obstruction of the view. Three patterns (plain, twill, and satin weaves) create support reinforcements to introduce the sacrificial monofilament. They are impregnated in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The design and morphology of the microfluidic channel and the maximum extraction force are studied depending on the woven fabric parameters. All reinforcements designed have been optimized to obtain a microfluidic channel with a diameter of around 500 μm and a length of 200 mm without fluid leakage. In addition, the woven reinforcement acted as a guide for the extraction of the sacrificial monofilament. The distribution of binding points allows the observation range to be modulated. Increasing the number of binding points results in a linear decrease in both visibility and extraction force.

Abstract:The concept of generating an oscillatory electroosmotic flux inside the porous particle to enhance the intra-particle mass transport was presented and a new kind of electrochromatography carried out in a five-compartment electrolyzer were developed. The adsorbent was packed in the central compartment, while the neighboring compartments were used as the elution compartments and the electrode compartments, respectively. Chromatographic separations of human serum albumin on Blue Sepharose Fast Flow, bovine serum albumin (BSA) on DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow, and BSA on hydroxyapatite were carried out, respectively. The adsorption isotherms were shown to be independent of electric field, while the increase in the electric field strength resulted in a linear increase in the magnitude of electroosmotic flux and the improvement of the breakthrough behavior in all cases. The experiment results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the oscillatory electroosmosis in enhancing intra- and inter-particle mass transport and its high potential to large-scale chromatography.

Abstract:The detection and conversion of physiological responses to electrical signals in long-term and dynamic measurement conditions are essential for the operation of health monitoring systems and human-computer interaction devices. An important challenge in tracking these bioelectrical signals is the electrodes with both high tracking quality and patient comfort. Here, a 3D textile electrode inspired by embroidery technique with 1D composite yarns is proposed that contains the mixture of reduced graphene oxide (RGO), sericin and waterretention polymer. The water retaining material and fluffy structure enables these textile electrodes to have conformal contact with skin and reduced contact impedance for a multiple-biosignal measurement. Porous construction of the knitted electrode further brings comfort to users due to the soft tactile formation and the breathable property. Unambiguous analyses of electromyography (EMG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals have been conducted experimentally as demos for potential clinical applications. Further, an ambulatory ECG monitoring for heart rate variability (HRV) test is carried out on volunteers under running motions as well as long-term tests. Continuous and high-fidelity signals are successfully achieved, despite the active motion and sweat conditions. As such, the proposed textile electrode could be applicable for the wearable bioelectrical signal acquisitions for a broad range of applications.
Electrospun polyethersolfone nanofibrous membrane as novel platform for protein immobilization in microfluidic systems

Abstract:In the present study, the feasibility of electrospun polyethersolfone (PES) nanofibrous membrane as the solid substrate for microfluidic based immunoassays to enhance the density of immobilized antibody on the surface of membrane was assessed. Conversely, the efficacy of antibody immobilization was compared by two different strategies as 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC)/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) coupling chemistry and hydrophobic interaction. Compared to conventional immunoassays carried out in plates or gels, microfluidic based immunoassays grant a lot of advantages such as a consumption of little samples and reagents, shorter analysis time, and higher efficiency. Therefore, microfluidic immunoassays can be efficiently used as a point-of-care device in medical diagnosis. Surprisingly, we found the increase of specific surface areas of the microfluidic channels improve density of immobilized proteins and leads to higher signal strength. Anti-staphylococcus enterotoxin B (anti-SEB) was used as an analyte model to demonstrate the utility of our proposed platform. Fluorescent microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR), gas adsorption, contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Uv-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques were used to assess the efficacy of antibody immobilization on the surface. To understand dominant mechanism of protein immobilization, zeta potential measurement was also carried out and it was found electrostatic attraction play significant role in antibody immobilization running into micro- channels containing through EDC/NHS. Abstract:Soft materials made from braided or woven microscale fibers can display unique properties that can be exploited in electromagnetic, mechanical, and biomedical applications. These properties depend on the topology of the braids or weaves—that is, the order in which fibers cross one another. Current industrial braiding and weaving machines cannot easily braid or weave micrometer-scale fibers into controllable topologies; they typically apply forces that are large enough to break the fibers, and each machine can typically make only one topology. Here we use a 3D-printed device called a "capillary machine" to manipulate micrometer-scale fibers without breaking them. The operating principle is the physics of capillary forces: as the machines move vertically, they exert lateral capillary forces on floating objects, which in turn move small fibers connected to them. We present a new type of capillary machine that is based on principles of braid theory. It implements all the possible fiber-swapping operations for a set of four fibers and can therefore make any four-strand topology, including braids, twists, hierarchical twists, and weaves. We make these different topologies by changing the pattern of vertical motion of the machine. This approach is a mechanically simple, yet versatile way to make micro- and nano-textiles. We describe the prospects and limitations of this new type of machine for applications.

Electrospun Nanofibers for Biomedical, Sensing, and Energy Harvesting Functions

Abstract:The process of electrospinning is over a century old, yet novel material and method achievements, and later the addition of nanomaterials in polymeric solutions, have spurred a significant increase in research innovations with several unique applications. Significant improvements have been achieved in the development of electrospun nanofibrous matrices, which include tailoring compositions of polymers with active agents, surface functionalization with nanoparticles, and encapsulation of functional materials within the nanofibers. Recently, sequentially combining fabrication of nanofibers with 3D printing was reported by our group and the synergistic process offers fiber membrane functionalities having the mechanical strength offered by 3D printed scaffolds. Recent developments in electrospun nanofibers are enumerated here with special emphasis on biomedical technologies, chemical and biological sensing, and energy harvesting aspects in the context of e-textile and tactile sensing. Energy harvesting offers significant advantages in many applications, such as biomedical technologies and critical infrastructure protection by using the concept of finite state machines and edge computing. Many other uses of devices using electrospun nanofibers, either as standalone or conjoined with 3D printed materials, are envisaged. The focus of this review is to highlight selected novel applications in biomedical technologies, chem.-bio sensing, and broadly in energy harvesting for use in internet of things (IoT) devices. The article concludes with a brief projection of the future direction of electrospun nanofibers, limitations, and how synergetic combination of the two processes will open pathways for future discoveries.
