Abstract:Abstract Background: Medicinal chemistry is one of the most important professional courses for undergraduate pharmacy students. It plays an essential role in the cultivation of innovative pharmaceutical talents, especially for drug discovery and development. Methods: We present here a new teaching system that integrates a cloud-based teaching platform, as well as applying an interspersed online and offline teaching strategy in an undergraduate medicinal chemistry course. Results: The innovative teaching mode increases undergraduates' interest and understanding of medicinal chemistry topics as well as the frontiers and technologies in new drug discovery. Furthermore, it promotes effective communication between teachers and students resulting in increased research interest and innovation skills of undergraduates.

Abstract:The fast-growing pharmaceutical industry of China calls for the cultivation of many qualified drug discovery talents urgently.The research of medicinal chemistry is the major driving force of drug discovery.Therefore,the corresponding course teaching represents main approach for the cultivation of drug discovery talents.Herein,three strategies against the problems in present college medicinal chemistry course teaching were demonstrated,including topic-based teaching extension,comprehensive teaching methods innovation and two-dimensional teaching evaluation.These strategies were initially proved efficient in motivating the students to learn more practical drug design skills and in developing the innovative thinking ability for drug discovery.Furthermore,the initial teaching practice outcome was evaluated and some constructive suggestions were thus presented accordingly.
Experimental training in molecular pharmacology education based on drug-target interactions

Abstract:Introduction: Drug development has been challenged by the dual drawbacks involving unpredictable disease outcomes and drug resistance, which has placed greater demands on pharmacology education. Molecular pharmacology, as a frontier crossover field of pharmacology, focuses on the research of new drugs and targets. However, due to the lack of a systematic experimental training system, molecular pharmacology has not made a corresponding contribution in promoting the training of innovative talent in pharmacology. We aim to establish an experimental training program suitable for molecular pharmacology to improve students' ability to engage in drug development in future. Methods: Based on the feasibility of drug-target projects, a comprehensive training program containing molecular docking, target stability experiment, and fluorescent probe detection of protein expression in living cells and mice was conducted among 20 pharmacy graduate students. The experimental training was assessed by the experimental training report and the student recognition questionnaires. Results: All 20 students mastered the experimental principles and operations required for the training program. The experimental reports proved that the students were in good command of the experimental principles, operations and applications. The results of the Likert questionnaire indicated that the training program promoted the understanding of the drug research process and increased motivation to learn. Conclusion: The designed experimental training program has a positive effect on the training of pharmacology talents, and can be implemented as a part of molecular pharmacology education.

Considering the need for academic medicinal chemistry teaching, this article aims at identifying important skills, competences, and basic knowledge as general learning outcomes based on an analysis of the relevant stakeholders and concludes effective teaching strategies preparing students for a future career as medicinal chemists and drug designers.

Abstract:A two-year long-term workshop centered around a phenotypic whole-cell screening strategy for integrating cutting-edge knowledge and discovery-based laboratory experiences was developed to serve as a preparatory course for enhancing the teaching quality of the upper-level discovery-based research internship curriculum for pharmacy major undergraduates. The workshop comprises four modules that integrate lessons and experiments into a genuine research project, which initiates with a medicinal-chemistry course, run concurrently in the second year and culminates with the discovery-based research internship curriculum for pharmacy major students as a corequisite in the last year. The effective implementation of the featured pedagogical approaches in the modules is detailed as described. A group of students (N = 4) passed the instructor–student two-way choice and were enrolled in the senior-level phenotypic hit discovery laboratory project. The students synthesized a small library of molecules, tested them in an antibacterial assay, and further designed new compounds to analyze structure–activity relationships. Furthermore, positive feedback from students revealed that the phenotypic hit discovery oriented workshop enabled them to gain in-depth cutting-edge knowledge and provided an understanding of how medicinal chemists engage in new drug discovery research. The student’s early exposure to troubleshooting or exploring unexpected results in an authentic scientific environment inspired them with ambition and confidence to engage with new drug discovery. We hope that this workshop will serve as a springboard for those wishing to educate medicinal chemists at an undergraduate level with modern strategies that are relevant to the current and future drug discovery landscape.

Abstract:For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher education establishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. By contrast, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary teaching (MITT) results in improved affective and cognitive learning and critical thinking, offering learners/students the opportunity to obtain a broad general knowledge base. Chemistry is a discipline that sits at the interface of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) subjects (and those aligned with or informed by STEMM subjects). This article discusses the significant potential of inclusion of chemistry in MITT activities in higher education and the real-world importance in personal, organizational, national, and global contexts. It outlines the development and implementation challenges attributed to legacy higher education infrastructures (that call for creative visionary leadership with strong and supportive management and administrative functions), and curriculum design that ensures inclusivity and collaboration and is pitched and balanced appropriately. It concludes with future possibilities, notably highlighting that chemistry, as a discipline, underpins industries that have multibillion dollar turnovers and employ millions of people across the world.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:An extensive suite of educational and training resources have been created by the CHEM21 project to promote the uptake and application of green and sustainable methodologies in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. They include a bespoke online learning platform containing free, shareable and interactive material suitable for distance learning; easy to use tools and guides that can be readily embedded into everyday practice; and a new RSC text book available in both print and electronic format. These initiatives were specifically designed to result in the elaboration of an educational program to train both students and those currently working within the industry. The involvement of EFPIA partners in their development has ensured that the training materials and methods developed have practical applicability within the medicinal and process chemist community. The research originated by the CHEM21 project has also informed the development of the educational and training material and provided case studies to exemplify the benefits of adopting sustainable chemistry in medicinal and process chemistry.

Abstract:Medicinal chemistry, a field typically left to the graduate and commercial realm, can be an effective pedagogical tool at an undergraduate institution. The drug-discovery process can be used as a tool to provide a broad range of research experiences that includes the design, synthesis, and testing of novel small molecules as potentially new therapeutic agents. Herein we discuss our scientific and pedagogical efforts and detail some of the available resources that faculty working at primarily undergraduate colleges may find useful in their exploration of a medicinal chemistry-related research program.

Abstract:Natural medicinal chemistry is one of the important courses for students in pharmacy majors. Its experimental teaching focuses on fostering comprehensive experimental skills and innovative abilities of undergraduates. Liaoning University has explored ways to promote the experimental teaching of natural drug chemistry based on the graduate employment and practical teaching experience in the past decade. These explorations include three aspects, such as synchronizing experimental teaching with theoretical teaching, fostering students' awareness of experimental safety, and improving experimental teaching methods in natural drug chemistry experiments. The practices showed that the reform has achieved a good effect. A teaching system that can achieve the three expected aspects has been established, which improved the teaching effect and quality of natural medicinal chemistry experimental courses for undergraduates. Furthermore, these explorations may facilitate fostering pharmacy specialists who can meet the opportunities of developing Chinese medicine and natural drug research and meet the requirements of employment.

Abstract:The Center for Advanced Training in Cell and Molecular Biology has been established as a national center to provide expert training for scientists and technicians in the biomedical sciences. Its focus is on those new and established biomedically related concepts and technologies that provide the major impetus for contemporary research, innovative industrial applications and sophisticated laboratory techniques. The Center sponsors diverse programs such as workshops, conferences, and symposia. Its primary emphasis is on 1-week programs that combine principles with laboratory practice. This unique endeavor is designed to serve society by providing scientists with opportunities to exploit effectively new and alternate technologies and by relieving industry and government of the burden of training its technical staff. Toxicologists will benefit from such programs as in vitro toxicology, receptors, epithelial cell culture, neurotropic drugs, and inflammatory responses.
