Abstract:Owing to the growing environmental concerns, super-critical and ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants dominate the electricity generation with the demand of near-zero air pollutant emission in China. Therefore, it is highly expected to assess the environmental impact and optimize the design at global and local levels. Exergoenvironmental analysis is a valid approach to investigate the formation of environmental impacts (EIs) associated with energy conversion systems at the component level. It generates information crucial for designing systems with a lower overall environmental impact, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis. A 600 MW supercritical coal-fired system with and without dust, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls was analyzed. Heat transfer in the boiler, condenser(CND), low pressure cylinder(LP), air preheater(APH) show high potential to decrease the environmental impact due to high exergy destructions. The deaerator (DEA), induced draft fan(IDF), forced draft fan(FDF) should be focussed on construction design and manufacturing optimization. Purification units reveal high benefit for reducing EI produced by coal combustion, but there is a large space for the EI saving for it. The specific EI of electricity in China is much greater than European.

Abstract:Reduction of water pollutant emissions and energy consumption is regarded as a key environmental objective for the pulp and paper industry. The paper develops a bottom-up model called the Industrial Water Pollutant Control and Technology Policy (IWPCTP) based on all industrial technology simulation system and multi, constraint technological optimization. Five policy scenarios covering the business as usual (BAU) scenario, the structural adjustment (SA) scenario, the cleaner technology promotion (CT) scenario, the end-treatment of pollutants (EOP) scenario, and the coupling measures (CM) scenario have been set to describe future policy measures related to the development of the pulp and paper industry from 2010-2020. The outcome of thiS study indicates that the energy saving amount under the CT scenario is the largest, while that under the SA scenario is the smallest. Under the CT scenario, savings by 2620 include 70 kt/year, of chemical oxygen demand (COD) emission reductions and savings of 7443 kt of standard coal, 539.7 ton/year: of ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) emission reductions, and savings of 7444 kt of standard coal. Taking emission reductions, energy savings, and cost benefit into consideration, cleaner technologies like highly efficient pulp washing, dry and wet feedstock preparation, and horizontal continuous cooking, medium and high consistency pulping And wood dry feedstock preparation are recommended.

Abstract:Fuel combustion for electricity generation emits a mix of health- and climate-relevant air emissions, with the potential for technology or fuel switching to impact multiple emissions together. While there has been extensive research on the co-benefits of climate policies on air quality improvements, few studies have quantified the effect of air pollution controls on carbon emissions. Here we evaluate three multi-pollutant emission reduction strategies, focused on sulfur dioxide (SO2) controls in the electricity sector. Traditional "add-on" pollution controls like flue gas desulfurization (FGD) reduce SO2 emissions from coal combustion but increase emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and carbon dioxide (CO2) due to heat efficiency loss. Fuel switching from coal to natural gas and renewables potentially reduces all pollutants. We identified 135 electricity generation units (EGUs) without SO2 controls in the contiguous US in 2017 and quantified the unit-level emission changes using pollution control efficiencies, emission rates, fuel heat input, and electricity load. A cost-benefit analysis is conducted, considering pollution control costs, fuel costs, capital and O&M costs, the monetized health benefits from avoided multi-pollutant, and the social cost of carbon as the benefit for carbon reduction. We find that add-on SO2 controls result in an average annual net benefit of 137.5- 432.7 million (95% CI: 498.9 million) per EGU; and fuel switching from coal to renewable energy sources, 457.1-$618.9 million) per EGU. Our results highlight multi-pollutant emission reduction strategy as a cost-effective way to synergistically control air pollution and mitigate climate change.

Measure-specific environmental benefits of air pollution control for coal-fired industrial boilers in China from 2015 to 2017

Abstract:From 2015 to 2017, China took strong air pollution control measures (APCMs) for coal-fired industrial boilers (CFIBs), including eliminating CFIBs, promoting clean fuels, and updating air pollution control devices (APCDs). Based on the industrial boiler's emission inventory of air pollutants, measure-specific emission reductions from 2015 to 2017 was estimated in this study. Besides, the measure-specific environmental benefits of unit emission reduction on concentration and deposition flux were systematically evaluated by WRF-CMAQ model. The total emission reductions for CFIBs of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOx, Hg, As, Cd, Cr and Pb from 2015 to 2017 were 1.2 Tg, 0.53 Tg, 2.06 Tg, 0.65 Tg, 37.6 tons, 179.5 tons, 17.9 tons, 1029.3 tons and 676.0 tons, respectively. Based on meteorological fields in 2017, their corresponding national population-weighted mitigated concentration was 1.8 μg m-3, 1.3 μg m-3, 3.6 μg m-3, 0.6 μg m-3 (NO2), 0.076 ng m-3, 0.37 ng m-3, 0.04 ng m-3, 1.83 ng m-3 and 2.3 ng m-3, respectively. Updating APCDs was identified as the major measure to reduce air pollutants (except NOx), accounting for more than 35% of emission reductions and mitigated concentration. Moreover, elimination was the major NOx reduction method, contributing to 55% of NOx emission reductions. The promoting of fuels, including replacement of CFIBs with gas-fired and biomass-fired industrial boilers, had higher environmental benefits for unit emission reductions. Furthermore, there were still more than 43,000 CFIBs with the capacity < 10 t h-1, accounting for 14%, 21%, and 11% of total PM2.5, SO2, and NOX emissions for CFIBs in 2017; meanwhile, 20% and 59% of CFIBs did not install flue gas desulfurization and denitrification devices, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended to give priority to phase out CFIBs with capacity < 10 t h-1 and APCDs updating for larger capacity CFIBs in the future.

Emission factors of industrial boilers burning biomass-derived fuels

Abstract:Boilers are combustion devices that provide process heat and are integral to many industrial facilities. Historically, outside of the pulp and paper industry, most boilers burned fossil fuels, although interest in decarbonization has been leading to an increased use of renewable fuels in boilers. These boilers, including those in the biorefineries, are often large sources of air pollutant emissions, and the characterization of these emissions is critical to obtaining air permits and ensuring protection of the surrounding air quality. Several industrial boilers and new biorefineries allow utilization of biomass-derived fuels (e.g. wastewater sludge, lignin, etc.) produced during their operation as a fuel for the boiler to meet process energy needs. However, there is limited empirical data on emission factors for the burning of unconventional fuels, such as solid-gas mixtures containing biomass residues. To fill this gap, we carry out a comprehensive data survey, collecting information on emission factors for boilers burning either a single or a mixture of solid and gaseous biomass-derived fuels. We review multiple hard-to-obtain and unconventional data sources, such as air permit applications, stack test data, and industry-sponsored data collection efforts, to compile emission factors for biomass-derived fuels. We then compare this data with wood residue emission factors from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's AP-42 emission factor database. Our results indicate that the emission factors for boilers burning unconventional fuels vary widely depending on the fuel composition, boiler type, and fuel characteristics. Overall, we find that median emission factors of selected biomass-derived fuels are typically lower than those of wood residue boilers in AP-42. The information collected herein could be useful to permitting agencies and industries utilizing boilers who may want to reduce the carbon impact of their facilities by combusting biomass-derived wastes for process energy needs, for more accurate emission estimation for permitting.Implications: Emission factors are often used for air permitting, specifically for emission estimation purposes. This study carries out a comprehensive data survey of emission factors burning unconventional biomass-derived fuels from underutilized sources such as air permits, stack test data, and industry-led efforts, and compare the results to EPA's wood residue emission factor database. The results from this study can be used can be used by multiple stakeholders such as air permitting agencies, industries burning biomass-derived fuels, and biorefineries, that utilize more advanced boiler technologies. The findings can help mitigate risks to industry owners and operators and helps to avoid delays in obtaining the required air permits that arise due to inappropriate emission estimates in permit applications.

Abstract:This search is evidence that development plans and environmental conservation go in one direction, where we can decrease environmental pollution with economic benefits simultaneously. By monitoring emissions from four boilers stacks (from petrochemical and food sectors) which working by natural gas. Changes in excess air were conducted to increase combustion efficiency means fuel savings, and decrease pollutant concentration, where there is a relationship between cost, combustion, stack heat loss, fuel-saving, and environment. Combustion efficiency and emitted pollutants from the stacks were measured before and after maintenance, where mixed-air with fuel is changed. In boiler 1 of petrochemical sector, carbon monoxide changed from 2222 to 21 mg/m3. In boiler 2, CO changed from 4695.3 to 5.5 mg/m3. The efficiency of boiler 1 and 2 improved from 75.5% to 92.1%, and from 71.5 to 93.1% respectively. In boiler 1 of food sector CO changed from 2200 to 45 mg/m3. In boiler 2, CO changed from 1900 to 59 mg/m3. The efficiency of boiler1 and 2 improved from 69.8% to 91.4%, and from 76.5% to 91.1% respectively. The cost reduction per year was 8469.1$ and 11692.8$ in the petrochemical sector, while it was 11624.4$ and 12168.2$ in the food sector. Where the cost of maintenance for each boiler was 100,000$, the payback time is 5.11 years for boiler 1 in the petrochemical sector and 3.99 years for boiler 2, while the payback time is 3.86 years for boiler 1 in the food sector and 5.68 years for boiler 2.

Abstract:The current work presented a computational intelligence approach used for minimizing NOx emissions in a 300MW dual-furnaces coal-fired utility boiler. The fundamental idea behind this work included NOx emissions characteristics modeling and NOx emissions optimization. First, an objective function aiming at estimating NOx emissions characteristics from nineteen operating parameters of the studied boiler was represented by a support vector regression (SVR) model. Second, four levels of primary air velocities (PA) and six levels of secondary air velocities (SA) were regulated by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) so as to achieve low NOx emissions combustion. To reduce the time demanding, a more flexible stopping condition was used to improve the computational efficiency without the loss of the quality of the optimization results. The results showed that the proposed approach provided an effective way to reduce NOx emissions from 399.7ppm to 269.3ppm, which was much better than a genetic algorithm (GA) based method and was slightly better than an ant colony optimization (ACO) based approach reported in the earlier work. The main advantage of PSO was that the computational cost, typical of less than 25s under a PC system, is much less than those required for ACO. This meant the proposed approach would be more applicable to online and real-time applications for NOx emissions minimization in actual power plant boilers.

Abstract:The US Pulp and Paper (P&P) industry heavily relies on fossil sources, with lime kiln operations posing a significant challenge for achieving zero on-site fossil emissions. This study assesses the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential and costs associated with alternative fuels in lime kiln operations for linerboard production. Various options, including bio-based fuels including pulverized biomass, gasification of biomass, crude tall oil, bio-methanol, and traditional fuels such as fuel oil and petcoke, were analyzed through detailed process simulations and Life Cycle Assessment. Results indicate that per ton of product, 2,789 kg of CO2-eq is emitted, with 69% being biogenic CO2 and 31% fossil CO2-eq. Notably, replacing the natural gas boiler with a biomass boiler reduces Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 41%, while switching lime kiln fuel to biofuels achieves a 5.5% reduction. Combining a biomass boiler with pulverized biomass fuel use in the lime kiln yields a substantial 93.1% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, at a cost of $76/ton of CO2-eq avoided.

Alternative policy assessment for water pollution control in China's pulp and paper industry

Abstract:The pulp and paper industry is the most important industrial sector for water pollution control in China. The current paper develops a technology-based model to assess alternative water pollution reduction policies in the pulp and paper industry up to 2020. Five policy scenarios are established to represent measures of raw material substitution, eliminating backward small-sized capacities, promoting cleaner technologies, advancing end-of-pipe treatment technologies and the integration of all these policies. Emission amounts of wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and absorbable organic halides (AOX) under different scenarios and corresponding economic costs are calculated. Among all individual policy measures, production capacity replacement has the best pollution reduction effect and the largest capital investment demand. Promoting cleaner technology can bring more economic benefits with less investment because of its by-effects of material and energy saving. Although raw material substitution is a basic strategy in China's paper industry, it does not show very significant pollution reduction effect on its own. Joint implementation of different policies is necessary in order to decrease gross emission amounts when total output keeps growing. The water pollution emission reduction target proposed in the development plan of China's paper industry, i.e. 10-12% reduction of COD and NR4-N in 2015 based on 2010 level, can be fulfilled through integrated policy measures. The Return of Coal-Fired Combined Heat and Power Plants: Feasibility and Environmental Assessment in the Case of Conversion to Another Fuel or Modernizing an Exhaust System

Abstract:Large city-scale coal-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plants are one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. The motivation is to find a way to decrease the contributions in the most feasible way possible. The importance of this study is that it presents a methodology for comparing scenarios from both environmental and economic points of view. The scenarios aim to enhance the environmental performance of combustion flue gas-treatment units. The scenarios include installing an advanced electrostatic precipitator (ESP), a hybrid system comprising ESP and a bag filter, a combined cyclone and baghouse filter, a hybrid baghouse filter with novel electrostatic tissue, a wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) scrubber, a WFGD with (NH4)2SO4 technology, and fuel conversion (incl. biomass). Each of the scenarios is evaluated according to (a) primary energy consumption, (b) capital (CapEx) and operational (OpEx) costs, and (c) the obtained environmental effect (decreasing emissions of particulate matter (PM), CO2, SO2, and NOx). Adopting biomass waste decreases CO2 emissions by 50%. PM from the coal-fired boiler with particle filtration is lower compared to biomass but is two times higher than that from natural gas. Using advanced filters for a CHP plant decreases total emissions and PM by 2100–2800%. The largest effect on air quality is achieved by filtration and WFGD, with emissions decreasing by 43%. Primary energy consumption is maximal in fuel conversion and ESP scenarios. The conversion to limestone-based WFGD or the installation of a hybrid filter separately are the most viable options, totaling EUR 14.2 billion of CapEx. However, combining several technologies is essential to increase the quality of flue gas treatment.

Abstract:An analysis was conducted on two integrated models involving direct co-firing and pyrolysis co-firing systems within a typical 600 MW coal-fired power generation plant. The study assessed the performance of various biomass sources (sawdust, corn straw, and rice husk) using distinct co-firing ratios (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) across technological, environmental, and economic dimensions. The findings revealed that in terms of thermal and exergy efficiency, the pyrolysis co-firing approach exhibited lower results compared to direct co-firing. Notably, among the biomasses tested, sawdust demonstrated the least impact on boiler efficiency. The CO 2 emission was estimated by the Life Cycle Assessment method. The emission of the conventional boiler, along with direct and pyrolysis co-firing of corn straw at a 20% ratio, resulted in CO 2 emissions of 1.075 kg, 0.954 kg, and 0.942 kg per 1kWh of electricity, respectively. The different feeding methods were also discussed, providing technically and economically rational options for coal-fired power plants. The economic feasibility of both co-firing systems was also proposed. At carbon tax rates of 410 CNY/t and 464 CNY/t for the direct co-firing and pyrolysis co-firing models respectively, the operational cost of the co-firing systems becomes comparable to that of a coal-fired boiler. However, when the by-product price exceeds 3700 CNY/t, the pyrolysis co-firing model becomes the more economically favorable option. This study primarily concentrates on investigating the real-world application and effective utilization of biomass co-firing systems within the specific framework of China's energy scenario.

Abstract:Biomass serves as a sustainable energy source; however, the environmental risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from industrial biomass-fueled boilers are not well understood. This study analyzed 16 priority PAHs in both particulate and gaseous phases from 13 representative real-world industrial biomass-fueled boilers. Flue gas samples were collected from the stacks and analyzed using advanced techniques. Total PAHs concentrations ranged from 1.36 to 8870 μg m-3 (9 % O2 v/v), with benzo[a]pyrene emissions from certain boilers exceeding the allowable emissions standards for the coking chemical and petroleum refining industries in China. PAHs were predominantly found in the gaseous phase, with both gas and particle phases exhibiting similar toxicity. The average emission factor (EFmass) was 9.23 mg kg-1, while the toxicity-equivalent emission factors (EFCEQ, EFMEQ, and EFTEQ) were 1.96 × 10-2, 1.39 × 10-2 and 7.61 × 10-4 mg kg-1, respectively. It is estimated that annual PAH emissions from 2020 to 2050 will significantly decrease if biomass is used as industrial fuel in boilers (0.61 to 1.32 Gg y-1) instead of being openly burned in the field (3.39 to 7.21 Gg y-1). Overall, this study provides a comprehensive evaluation of PAH emissions from industrial biomass combustion, offering valuable data for future research and policy-making.
Method for Environmental Management in Paper Industry Based on Pollution Control Technology Simulation

Abstract:To evaluate the reduction potential of industrial water pollutant emissions and to study the application of technology simulation in pollutant control and environment management, an Industrial Reduction Potential Analysis and Environment Management (IRPAEM) model was developed based on coupling of "material-process-technology-product". The model integrated bottom-up modeling and scenario analysis method, and was applied to China's paper industry. Results showed that under CM scenario, the reduction potentials of waster water, COD and ammonia nitrogen would reach 7 x 10(8) t, 39 x 10(4) t and 0.3 x 10(4) t, respectively in 2015, 13.8 x 10(8) t, 56 x 10(4) t and 0.5 x 10(4) t, respectively in 2020. Strengthening the end-treatment would still be the key method to reduce emissions during 2010-2020, while the reduction effect of structure adjustment would be more obvious during 2015-2020. Pollution production could basically reach the domestic or international advanced level of clean production in 2015 and 2020; the index of wastewater and ammonia nitrogen would basically meet the emission standards in 2015 and 2020 while COD would not.
Cost-effectiveness Optimization for SO2 Emissions Control from Coal-Fired Power Plants on a National Scale: A Case Study in China

Abstract:In China, industry is responsible for 88.15% of the sulfur dioxide emissions, of which coal-fired power plants account for around 35.62%. Moreover, over 90% of power plant had installed FGD implementers. On the road to an optimal economic emission control, this article develops an ILP algorithm to optimize the sorting SO2 emission control technology costs, based on a detailed database that contains large amounts of information for 1,966 thermal power plants, such as unit installed capacity and annual generating capacity, coal consumption, sulfur content, emission control technologies, operation duration and geographical location. The results demonstrate that the total operating costs will increase along with emission abatement. When the average desulfurization efficiency reaches 95%, 98% and 99%, the total operating cost in China is 54.4 billion CNY, 64.8 billion CNY and 78.6 billion CNY, respectively. Under the scenario that every power plant reaches the SO2 emission limitation, the total operating cost of following the least-cost retrofitting laws could reduce by 5.05% to 15.31% nationwide. Finally, the study suggests that desulfurization equipment with high removal efficiency should be installed primarily in larger units, and policymakers could develop cost-effectiveness control strategies for coal-fired power plants using the results of this paper.

Abstract:There are more than 30,000 biomass- and fossil-fuel-burning power plants now operating worldwide, reflecting a tremendously diverse infrastructure, which ranges in capacity from less than a megawatt to more than a gigawatt. In 2010, 68.7% of electricity generated globally came from these power plants, compared with 64.2% in 1990. Although the electricity generated by this infrastructure is vital to economic activity worldwide, it also produces more CO2 and air pollutant emissions than infrastructure from any other industrial sector. Here, we assess fuel- and region-specific opportunities for reducing undesirable air pollutant emissions using a newly developed emission dataset at the level of individual generating units. For example, we find that retiring or installing emission control technologies on units representing 0.8% of the global coal-fired power plant capacity could reduce levels of PM2.5 emissions by 7.7–14.2%. In India and China, retiring coal-fired plants representing 1.8% and 0.8% of total capacity can reduce total PM2.5 emissions from coal-fired plants by 13.2% and 16.0%, respectively. Our results therefore suggest that policies targeting a relatively small number of ‘super-polluting’ units could substantially reduce pollutant emissions and thus the related impacts on both human health and global climate. After developing a unit-based air pollutants emission inventory of more than 30,000 fossil fuel power plants operating worldwide in 2010, the authors find that retiring or implementing controlling measures on coal-fired power plants, representing 0.8% of global capacity, could reduce PM2.5 emissions from coal-fired plants by up to 14.2%.

Abstract:The total emission control target of water pollutants (e.g., COD and NH4–N) for a certain industrial sector can be predicted and analysed using the popular technology-based bottom-up modelling. However, this methodology has obvious uncertainty regarding the attainment of mitigation targets. The primary uncertainty comes from macro-production, pollutant reduction roadmap, and technical parameters. This research takes the paper and pulp industry in China as an example, and builds 5 mitigation scenarios via different combinations of raw material structure, scale structure, procedure mitigation technology, and end-of-pipe treatment technology. Using the methodology of uncertainty analysis via Monte Carlo, random sampling was conducted over a hundred thousand times. According to key parameters, sensitive parameters that impact total emission control targets such as industrial output, technique structure, cleaner production technology, and end-of-pipe treatment technology are discussed in this article. It appears that scenario uncertainty has a larger influence on COD emission than NH4–N, hence it is recommended that a looser total emission control target for COD is necessary to increase its feasibility and availability while maintaining the status quo of NH4–N. Consequently, from uncertainty analysis, this research recognizes the sensitive products, techniques, and technologies affecting industrial water pollution.

Abstract:Pollutant abatement systems are widely applied in the coal-fired power sector, and the energy consumption is considered an important part of the auxiliary power. An energy consumption analysis and assessment model of pollutant abatement systems in a power unit was developed based on the dynamic parameters and technology. The energy consumption of pollutant abatement systems in a 1000-MW coal-fired power unit that meets the ultra-low emission limits and the factors of operating parameters, including unit load and inlet concentration of pollutants, on the operating power were analyzed. The results show that the total power consumption of the pollutant abatement systems accounted for 1.27% of the gross power generation during the monitoring period. The wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) system consumed 67% of the rate, whereas the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and electrostatic precipitator (ESP) systems consumed 8.9% and 24.1%, respectively. The power consumption rate of pollutant abatement systems decreased with the increase of unit load and increased with the increase of the inlet concentration of pollutants. The operation adjustment was also an effective method to increase the energy efficiency. For example, the operation adjustment of slurry circulation pumps could promote the energy-saving operation of the WFGD system.IMPLICATIONS:The application of pollutant abatement technologies increases the internal energy consumption of the power plant, which will lead to an increase of power generation costs. The real-time energy consumption of the different pollutant abatement systems in a typical power unit is analyzed based on the dynamic operating data. Further, the influence of different operating parameters on the operating power of the system and the possible energy-saving potential are analyzed.

Abstract:The development of photovoltaic systems and wind turbines reduces the carbon footprint (CFP) of energy generation. However, these systems deteriorate the stability of the national power system (NPS). The important stabilizing element of the Polish NPS are coal-fired power plants. Since the cold startup of these units takes several hours, the stability of the NPS forces the boilers to operate so that the power can be increased quickly. Therefore, it will be impossible to abandon coal-fired units in the next years, and the boilers will be modernized to reduce their CFP. An important option is to replace coal with a fuel with a lower CFP, e.g. biomass. This paper deals with the CFP for different types of biomass. It also considers methane emissions from coal mines. The CFP for coal and biomass was compared with the CFP for green ammonia. Using 0-dimensional calculations of the boiler, the need to modernize the heating surfaces was assessed when replacing 50% and more of coal with biomass. The changed fouling of heating surfaces was taken into account. The problem of reducing harmful phenomena such as corrosion, erosion and slagging associated with such a change of fuel is also discussed.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides are released during atmospheric combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, and during the production of certain chemicals and products. They can react with natural or man-made volatile organic compounds to produce smog, or else can be further oxidized to produce particulate haze, or acid rain that can eutrophy land and water. The reactive nitrogen that begins in the energy sector thus cascades through the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and soils before being eventually partially denitrifed to the global warming and stratospheric ozone-depleting gas nitrous oxide or molecular nitrogen. This paper will suggest how an economic analysis of the nitrogen cycle can identify the most cost-effective places to intervene. Nitrogen oxides released during fossil-fuel combustion in vehicles, power plants and heating boilers can either be controlled by add-on emission control technology, or can be eliminated by many of the same technical options that lead to carbon dioxide reduction. These integrated strategies also address sustainability, economic development and national security issues. Similarly in industrial production, it is more effective to focus on redesigning industrial processes rather than on nitrogen oxide pollution elimination from the current system. This paper will suggest which strategies might be utilized to address multiple benefits rather than focusing on single pollutants.
Establishment of a database of emission factors for atmospheric pollutants from Chinese coal-fired power plants

Abstract:Field measurements and data investigations were conducted for developing an emission factor database for inventories of atmospheric pollutants from Chinese coal-fired power plants. Gaseous pollutants and particulate matter (PM) of different size fractions were measured using a gas analyzer and an electric low-pressure impactor (ELPI), respectively, for ten units in eight coal-fired power plants across the country. Combining results of field tests and literature surveys, emission factors with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by boiler type, fuel quality, and emission control devices using bootstrap and Monte Carlo simulations. The emission factor of uncontrolled SO2 from pulverized combustion (PC) boilers burning bituminous or anthracite coal was estimated to be 18.0Skgt−1 (i.e., 18.0×the percentage sulfur content of coal, S) with a 95% CI of 17.2S–18.5S. NOX emission factors for pulverized-coal boilers ranged from 4.0 to 11.2kgt−1, with uncertainties of 14–45% for different unit types. The emission factors of uncontrolled PM2.5, PM10, and total PM emitted by PC boilers were estimated to be 0.4A (where A is the percentage ash content of coal), 1.5A and 6.9Akgt−1, respectively, with 95% CIs of 0.3A–0.5A, 1.1A–1.9A and 5.8A–7.9A. The analogous PM values for emissions with electrostatic precipitator (ESP) controls were 0.032A (95% CI: 0.021A–0.046A), 0.065A (0.039A–0.092A) and 0.094A (0.0656A–0.132A)kgt−1, and 0.0147A (0.0092–0.0225A), 0.0210A (0.0129A–0.0317A), and 0.0231A (0.0142A–0.0348A) for those with both ESP and wet flue-gas desulfurization (wet-FGD). SO2 and NOX emission factors for Chinese power plants were smaller than those of U.S. EPA AP-42 database, due mainly to lower heating values of coals in China. PM emission factors for units with ESP, however, were generally larger than AP-42 values, because of poorer removal efficiencies of Chinese dust collectors. For units with advanced emission control technologies, more field measurements are needed to reduce emission factor uncertainties.
