Abstract:Reported is the accurate refinement of the structure of the ternary bismuthide BaLiBi, based on single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction data. This compound crystallizes with the ZrBeSi structure type with the space group P63/mmc (no. 194), a = 4.9917(6) Å, c = 9.079(2) Å, V = 195.92(7) Å3 with two formula units per unit cell. In addition to being a colored ternary variant of the AlB2 type, the crystal structure of BaLiBi can be also viewed as a "stuffed" variant of the NiAs structure, where the Bi atoms form a hexagonal close packing, the Ba atoms occupy the octahedral voids in this packing, and the Li atoms are located between adjacent tetrahedral voids on their common triangular faces. In the absence of direct Bi–Bi interactions, the BaLiBi crystal structure rationalized according to the notation (Ba2+)(Li+)(Bi3–), suggesting an electron‐balanced composition, i.e., a Zintl phase. In line with this notation, scalar‐relativistic first‐principle calculations with the LMTO code reveal a semiconducting ground state, with a bandgap of about 0.6 eV. Fully relativistic electronic structure calculations predict a semimetallic ground state.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of LaBa2Cu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) and La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The structure and physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, infrared (IR) transmission spectra and electronic spin resonance (ESR). With Li doping, an orthorhombic–tetragonal transition takes place as 0.3<x⩽0.5. While for La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy, the system remains orthorhombic structure within the entire doping range. Li doping and Li, La co-doping induce charge redistribution in the two systems and the single Li doping causes Cu2+ spins to localize, especially for the x⩾0.5 samples. The changes of the IR and ESR spectra are analysed and discussed in detail.

The First Quaternary Bismuthide Zintl Phase Ba8Zn2-xIn3+xBi10 with complex Crystal Structure

Abstract:The first quaternary Zintl phase Ba8Zn2–xIn3+xBi10 (x = 0.21–0.47) was synthesized by reacting the elements at high temperature and, its crystal structure determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m, with a large unit cell volume, V = 3351.3(6) Å3 (Z = 4), which is a new structure type. The basic structural building blocks are MBi4 tetrahedra (M = In or Zn/In mix) that are condensed by sharing corners when mainly centered by In atom, or corners and edges when mainly centered by Zn atom. In turn, these tetrahedra form two markedly distinct one-dimensional (1-D) polyanionic substructures, defining two virtually distinct sub-structures. Corollary, the title structure can be viewed as an intergrowth of two imaginary quaternary phases (1A) “Ba3Zn1–yIn1+yBi4” and (1B) “Ba5Zn1–zIn2+zBi6” (with x = y+z). The polyanionic system in the 1A block, [Zn1–yIn1+yBi4]6– consists of dimeric pentagonal rings that are stacked to form double pentagonal tubes running in the b-direction, and filled with Ba cations. The polyanion in the 1B block, [Zn1–zIn2+zBi6]6– consists of large ribbons formed by the condensation of two strands of dimeric corner sharing infinite chains of [InBi4] tetrahedra with one chain of edge-sharing [ZnBi4] tetrahedra. The Zn/In atomic site preferences appeared to be one decisive factor behind the structural complexity and, it seems to be directed mainly by the atomic valence states and sizes, as well as the electrostatic factors, aiming to optimize the lattice reticular energy, as confirmed by total energy calculations on three ordered models using DFT methods. According to the Zintl-Klemm concept (ZKC) and the 8–N rules, the compound should be charge balanced for x = 0. Therefore, the experimentally observed phase width (x = 0.21 to 0.47) indicates that the system is amenable for substantial (n- or p-type) doping, to fine tune their transport properties, like the charge carrier concentration and charge mobility, via specific chemical substitutions at specific sites of the two polyanionic blocks. The DFT electronic band structure calculations on the hypothetical fully ordered model ‘Ba8Zn2In3Bi10’ (x = 0), also predicted the title compound to be a semiconductor with narrow band gap. Therefore, the title phase fully qualified as a promising thermoelectric material candidate.

Abstract:A new bismuth-based halide double perovskite Cs2LiBiCl6 was isolated successfully using solid-state reactions. The crystal structure was investigated using X-ray diffraction and complemented by 7Li solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which indicated the highly ordered nature of Li and Bi ions in the B sublattice of double perovskite. Compared with the Na analogue, the more moisture-sensitive Cs2LiBiCl6 has a smaller indirect band gap of 3.15(2) eV and red-shift luminescence of around 612 nm as well as stronger intensities at Mn2+ doping. The stability mechanism of Cs2LiBiCl6 was discussed together with that of Cs2NaBiCl6 and their inaccessible Br counterparts based on the tolerance and octahedral factors and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Owing to the small size of Li+ cations, Cs2LiBiCl6 has low tolerance and octahedral factors close to the boundary between the stable perovskite and nonperovskite compounds, which possess a small decomposition energy and thus easily coexist with other ternary phases. The Br-based compositions of Cs2LiBiBr6 and Cs2NaBiBr6 have even smaller octahedral factors and negative decomposition energies, and therefore their double perovskite polymorphs are destabilized. DFT simulations indicate that the moisture sensitivity of Cs2LiBiCl6 is related to the coordination preference of Li+ due to its smaller size and the steric effect from water molecules, in contrast with the larger Na+ showing a more stable octahedral configuration under the water incorporation. Abstract:A combination of theoretical calculation and the experimental synthesis to explore the new ternary compound is demonstrated in the Sr-Pt-Bi system. Since Pt-Bi is considered as a new critical charge-transfer pair for superconductivity, it inspired us to investigate the Sr-Pt-Bi system. With a thorough calculation of all the known stable/metastable compounds in the Sr-Pt-Bi system and crystal structure predictions, the thermodynamic stability of hypothetical stoichiometry, SrPtBi2, is determined. Followed by the high-temperature synthesis and crystallographic analysis, the first ternary bismuthide in Sr-Pt-Bi, SrPtBi2 was prepared and the stoichiometry was confirmed experimentally. SrPtBi2 crystallizes in the space group Pnma (S.G. 62, Pearson Symbol oP48), which matches well with theoretical prediction using an adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA). Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the orthorhombic structure has lower formation energies than other 112 structure types, such as tetragonal BaMnBi2 (CuSmP2) and LaAuBi2 (CuHfSi2) structure types. The bonding analysis indicates the Pt-Bi interactions play a critical role in structural stability. The physical properties measurements show the metallic properties with low electron-phonon interactions at the low temperature, which agrees with the electronic structure assessment.

Structure and Ionic Conductivity of Li-Disordered Bismuth o-Thiophosphate Li60-3 xBi16+ x(PS4)36

Abstract:The structure of the first lithium-containing bismuth ortho (o)-thiophosphate was determined using a combination of powder X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction. Li60-3xBi16+x(PS4)36 with x in the range of 4.1-6.5 possesses a complex monoclinic structure [space group C2/c (No. 15)] and a large unit cell with the lattice parameters a = 15.4866 Å, b = 10.3232 Å, c = 33.8046 Å, and β = 85.395° for Li44.4Bi21.2(PS4)36, in agreement with the structure as observed by X-ray and neutron pair distribution function analysis. The disordered distribution of lithium ions within the interstices of the dense host structure and the Li ion dynamics and diffusion pathways have been investigated by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, pulsed field gradient NMR diffusion measurements, and bond valence sum calculations. The total lithium ion conductivities range from 2.6 × 10-7 to 2.8 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 20 °C with activation energies between 0.29 and 0.32 eV, depending on the bismuth content. Despite the highly disordered nature of lithium ions in Li60-3xBi16+x(PS4)36, the underlying dense host framework appears to limit the dimensionality of the lithium diffusion pathways and emphasizes once more the necessity of a close inspection of the structure-property relationships in solid electrolytes.

Abstract:High-level production of α-cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) is one of the key factors in α-cyclodextrin (CD) preparation. In the present study, a fed-batch fermentation strategy for high-cell-density cultivation of Escherichia coli and the extracellular production of recombinant α-CGTase from Paenibacillus macerans JFB05-01 was established. A combined feeding strategy based on both specific growth rate before induction and the amount of glycerol residues after induction was used to control cell growth, acetate production, and glycerol consumption. When induced by lactose, a feeding solution with complex nitrogen was found beneficial for α-CGTase production. In addition, different induction temperatures and induction points were investigated, and the results indicated that these factors played an important role in α-CGTase production. When induced at 25 °C and at a dry cell weight of 30 g L(-1), the extracellular activity of α-CGTase could reach 275.3 U mL(-1).

Abstract:The effects of high valence cations Mn+ (n >= 4) doped on the phase formation and the structure stability have been investigated. In the crystal structure X3Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (X = Bi1-x-yPbxMy), the high valence cations M2+, Bi3+, and Pb2+ were deter-mined to statistically distribute at the bismuth positions. The bismuth valence is raised and the positions of oxygen atoms in the (XO2X) double layers are fully occupied. Conseqently, The structural stability is increased. The phase 2223 was found to form more rapidly by doping and the single phase with T-c(0)>110K can be obtained more easily.

Abstract:We have performed an isovalent substitution study in a layered titanium oxypnictide system BaTi2(Sb1-xBix)(2)O (0 <= x <= 0.40) by measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility. The parent compound BaTi2Sb2O is confirmed to exhibit superconductivity at 1.5 K as well as charge-or spin-density wave (CDW/SDW) ordering below 55 K. With the partial substitution of Sb by Bi, the lattice parameters a, c, and c/a all increase monotonically, indicating a negative chemical pressure and lattice distortion for the (super) conducting Ti2Sb2O layers. Bi doping elevates the superconducting transition temperature to its maximum T-c = 3.7 K at x = 0.17, and then T-c decreases gradually with further Bi doping. A metal-to-nonmetal transition takes place around x = 0.3, and superconductivity at similar to 1 K survives on the nonmetal side. The CDW/SDW anomaly, in comparison, is rapidly suppressed by Bi doping, and vanishes for x >= 0.17. The results are discussed in terms of negative chemical pressure and the disorder effect.

Abstract:A solid solution between polar perovskite oxides BiInO3 and BiZn1/2Ti1/2O3 with the atomic displacement of Bi3+ and B-site (In and Zn1/2Ti1/2) as the origin of spontaneous electric polarization was investigated. Polar orthorhombic to nonpolar orthorhombic transition accompanied by negative thermal expansion (NTE) with constant volume shrinkage was observed for x ≤ 0.3 in BiIn1–xZnx/2Tix/2O3. A relative shift of electrical polarization from A-site Bi3+ to B-site ions reduced the transition temperature and enabled NTE in a wide temperature range with suppressed temperature hysteresis. Abstract:Employment of liquid bismuth (Bi) allows the facile single-crystal growth of compounds containing elements with high melting points, provided that these elements have reasonably high solubility in Bi. Utilization of the Bi flux approach yielded two new ternary bismuthides, SrNi0.17(1)Bi2 [a defect variant of the BaCuSn2 type, space group Cmcm, a = 4.879(2) Å, b = 17.580(6) Å, and c = 4.696(2) Å] and CaTi3Bi4 [NdTi3(Sn0.1Sb0.9)4 structure type, space group Fmmm, a = 5.6295(7) Å, b = 9.8389(1) Å, and c = 23.905(3) Å]. In addition, the ternary antimonide CaV3Sb4, isostructural with CaTi3Bi4, was synthesized from antimony (Sb) flux, and analyzed with the goal of validating structural assessment of the bismuthide analogue, where the X-ray crystallographic work proved to be very challenging. All synthesized compounds exhibit complex crystal structures featuring quasi-two-dimensional building blocks of different topologies. First-principle calculations reveal hypervalent bonding in the homoatomic Bi subunits. Physical property measurements indicate metallic conductivity and the absence of localized magnetism in the studied compounds.
Anomalous lattice contraction and emerging topological phases in Bi-substituted Sm 2 Ir 2 O 7

Abstract:We demonstrate that substituting Bi for Sm in the pyrochlore Sm Ir O induces an anomalous lattice contraction, with ~\AA~observed at 10\% Bi substitution, where 'a' denotes the lattice constant. Beyond 10\% Bi substitution, the lattice expands according to Vegard's law. Within this anomalous substitution range, the resistivity shows a 1/T behavior up to 2\% Bi-substitution, while near 10\% substitution a -lnT dependence is observed. These resistivity behaviors suggest the possibility of a Weyl phase up to 2\% Bi substitution, which transforms to a semimetallic quadratic band touching (QBT) topological phase near 10\%. For the intermediate composition (Sm Bi ) Ir O , the resistivity scales as , possibly due to its proximity to a proposed quantum critical point at the Weyl-QBT phase boundary [Phys. Rev. X 4, 041027 (2014)]. The samples were characterized using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray near-edge fine structure (XANES), and Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) probes. Additionally, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements were conducted to provide further support.

Abstract:Using a combination of high-resolution and high-sensitivity neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements, it is shown that BaPb${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Bi${}_{x}$O${}_{3}$ is dimorphic for the critical superconducting composition regime of $x$ between 0.2 and 0.3. The system is not chemically phase separated; the simultaneous existence of tetragonal and orthorhombic polymorphs of the same composition is demonstrated. The polymorphs differ fundamentally in the distortion and tilting of the octahedra, such that they cannot be obtained from each other via a second-order phase transition. It is established that the tetragonal symmetry polymorph is the superconducting phase.
Magnetism out of disorder in a J=0 compound Ba2YIrO6

Abstract:We systematically investigate the magnetic properties and local structure of Ba2YIrO6 to demonstrate that Y and Ir lattice defects in the form of antiphase boundary or clusters of antisite disorder affect the magnetism observed in this $d^4$ compound. We compare the magnetic properties and atomic imaging of (1) a slow cooled crystal, (2) a crystal quenched from 900\degree C after growth, and (3) a crystal grown using a faster cooling rate than the slow cooled one. Atomic imaging by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) shows that quenching from 900oC introduces antiphase boundary to the crystals, and a faster cooling rate during crystal growth leads to clusters of Y and Ir antisite disorder. STEM study suggests the antiphase boundary region is Ir-rich with a composition of Ba2YIrO6. The magnetic measurements show that Ba2YIrO6 crystals with clusters of antisite defects have a larger effective moment and a larger saturation moment than the slow-cooled crystals. Quenched crystals with Ir-rich antiphase boundary shows a slightly suppressed saturation moment than the slow cooled crystals, and this seems to suggest that antiphase boundary is detrimental to the moment formation. Our DFT calculations suggest magnetic condensation is unlikely as the energy to be gained from superexchange is small compared to the spin-orbit gap. However, once Y is replaced by Ir in the antisite disordered region, the picture of local non-magnetic singlets breaks down and magnetism can be induced. This is because of (a) enhanced interactions due to increased overlap of orbitals between sites, and, (b) increased number of orbitals mediating the interactions. Our work highlights the importance of lattice defects in understanding the experimentally observed magnetism in Ba2YIrO6 and other J=0 systems.

Compositional Evolution of the Anti-phase Stripe Superstructure in Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 (0<x<=1.1) Revealed by Transmission Electron Microscopy

Abstract:The detailed structural properties of La-doped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 (La-Bi2201, 0<=x<=1.1) have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The well-known incommensurate supermodulation q1 in the Bi-based cuprates evolves from a monoclinic superstructure in the pristine Bi2201 phase to an orthogonal one in La-Bi2201(x=0.73) phase. The b-component of the modulation vector (q1) for x=0.25 sample is about 0.24b* and increases slightly to 0.246b* in x=0.84 sample, while it increases significantly to 0.286b* for x=1.10 sample. We have revealed a new anti-phase stripe superstructure in all the La-doped Bi2201 samples, giving rise to a new modulation with a vector q2. This q2 modulation is directly evolved from the orthogonal modulation q1 through an addition of the anti-phase structure so that its vector q2 equals to q1b/2. We also discussed the implication of these structural studies on the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in La-Bi2201.

Abstract:In this study, the synthesis, structural and electrical properties of BaSn0.75M0.25O3-δ (M = Fe, Sc, In, Y, Gd, Sm, Nd and La) compounds have been investigated. Single phase powders of these materials were successfully synthesized by a gel polymerization route and sintered to obtain dense pellets. X-ray diffraction reveals that all compounds crystallise in a cubic perovskite like-structure (space group: Pm3̄m) at room temperature. However, cell parameters of the substituted compounds do not evolve in accordance with the substituent radius, i.e. an abnormal drop was observed for elements with a large radius, i.e. Sm, Nd and La. A possible interpretation could be the partial incorporation of substituents into the Ba-site. The site incorporation selectivity of substituents into the Ba- and Sn-sites was investigated based on the study of lattice parameters and empirical defect models. Experiments show that the thermal expansion coefficients and electrical properties have no specific correlation with the nature of the substituent. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A novel ternary bismuthide, NaMgBi: crystal and electronic structure and electrical properties

Abstract:Abstract A new ternary sodium magnesium bismuthide, NaMgBi, has been synthesized from the constituent metals, and its crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. NaMgBi crystallizes in a tetragonal PbFCl-type structure corresponding to the space group P 4/ nmm , where Z = 2, a = 4.7123(4) and c = 7.8158(7) Å. The structure is composed of layers formed by edge-sharing Bi tetrahedra centered with Mg stacked in the c -axis direction, and these layers sandwich the Na atoms. First-principles computations based on density functional theory calculations have verified that the most stable atomic configuration is the one in which the Na and Mg atoms occupy the 2 a and 2 c sites, respectively. The electrical resistivity measured for a sintered polycrystalline sample of NaMgBi with a relative density of 70% was found to gradually decrease from 868 to 26.4 mΩ cm upon increasing the temperature from 297 to 506 K, and the Seebeck coefficient decreased from 273 to 180 μV K −1 upon increasing the temperature from 298 to 496 K. Electronic structure calculations have revealed that NaMgBi must be a semiconductor with a small band gap of ∼0.1 eV.

Abstract:Sm3+ and Nd3+ substitution for Bi3+ in SrBi8Ti7O27 with mixed layer structure was investigated. The solid solution limit of Sr(Bi1-xSmx)8Ti7O27 was between x=0.15 and x=0.25 while that of Sr(Bi1-xNdx)8Ti7O27 was between x=0.05 and x=0.15. The temperature stable dielectric ceramics with high dielectric constants (>100) were obtained by Sm3+ and Nd3+ substitution for Bi3+ in SrBi8Ti7O27, where the dielectric loss varied from 0.002 to 0.02 at 1 MHz.
