Abstract:Purpose: To cross-cultural translate the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) to Taiwan-Chinese version (CAIT-TW), and to evaluate the validity, reliability and cutoff score of CAIT-TW for Taiwan-Chinese athletic population.Materials and methods: The English version of CAIT was translated to CAIT-TW based on a guideline of cross-cultural adaptation. 77 and 58 Taiwanese collegial athletes with and without chronic ankle instability filled out CAIT-TW, Taiwan-Chinese version of Lower Extremity Functional Score (LEFS-TW) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The construct validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and cutoff score of CAIT-TW were evaluated.Results: In construct validity, the Spearman's correlation coefficients were moderate (CAIT-TW vs LEFS-TW: Rho = 0.39, p < 0.001) and strong (CAIT-TW vs NRS: Rho= 0.76, p < 0.001). The test retest reliability was excellent (ICC2.1 = 0.91, 95% confidential interval = 0.87–0.94, p < 0.001) with a good internal consistency (Cronbach's α: 0.87). Receiver operating characteristic curve showed a cutoff score of 21.5 (Youden index: 0.73, sensitivity: 0.87, specificity 0.85).Conclusions: The CAIT-TW is a valid and reliable tool to differentiate between stable and instable ankles in athletes and may further apply for research or daily practice in Taiwan.For athletes, chronic ankle instability is prevalent and causes negative sequela, such as lowered quality of daily life, affected functional performance, and may cause post traumatic osteoarthritis.The psychometric properties of the Taiwan-Chinese version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool showed moderate to strong construct validity, excellent test retest reliability, a good internal consistency and a cutoff score of 21.5.The validity and reliability of the Taiwan-Chinese version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool are to enable clinicians to evaluate and manage ankle instability in Taiwanese who speaks Mandarin Chinese.

Abstract:As an effective scale for the condition assessment of patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI), the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) is the most widely used scale, and its original version is written in English. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to apply the CAIT to Chinese patients and evaluate its responsiveness, reliability, and validity in terms of Chinese patients with CAI. First, we adapted the CAIT into the Chinese edition (CAIT-C), through which cross-cultural adaptation and translation can be carried out in a five-step procedure. Next, recruited patients completed the three periods of the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), CAIT-C, and the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36) scales. Afterward, to assess the responsiveness, reliability, and validity, we calculated the standardized response mean (SRM), effect size (ES), Spearman's correlation coefficient (rs), minimal detectable change (MDC), standard error of measurement (SEM), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Cronbach's alpha. Generally, in the use of CAI, 131, 119, and 86 patients favorably completed the three periods of the scales. The CAIT-C was proven to have good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.930) and fine internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.845-0.878). The low-value of MDC (0.04-2.28) and SEM (1.73) show it is possible to detect clinical changes when we take advantage of CAIT-C. Good or moderate correlations (rs = 0.422-0.738) were gained from the physical subscales of the SF-36 and the subscales of the FAAM and the CAIT-C. Fair or poor correlations (rs = 0.003-0.360) were gained between the mental subscales of the SF-36 and the CAIT-C, which sufficiently indicated that the CAIT-C had good validity. Moreover, good responsiveness was observed in the CAIT-C (ES = 1.316, SRM = 1.418). The CAIT-C scale is an effective, valid, and reliable tool to evaluate Chinese CAI patients.
Cervical Spine Instability Screening Tool Thai Version: Assessment of Convergent Validity and Rater Reliability

Abstract:Neck pain, dizziness, difficulty supporting the head for an extended period, and impaired movement are all symptoms of cervical spine instability, which may produce cervical spondylolisthesis in patients who have more severe symptoms. To avoid problems and consequences, early detection of cervical spine instability is required. A previous study created a Thai-language version of a cervical spine instability screening tool, named the CSI-TH, and evaluated its content validity. However, other characteristics of the CSI-TH still needed to be evaluated. The objective of the current study was to assess the rater reliability and convergent validity of the CSI-TH. A total of 160 participants with nonspecific chronic neck pain were included in the study. The Neck Disability Index Thai version (NDI-TH), the Visual Analog Scale Thai version (VAS-TH), and the Modified STarT Back Screening Tool Thai version (mSBST-TH) were used to evaluate the convergent validity of the CSI-TH. To determine inter- and intra-rater reliabilities, novice and experienced physical therapists were involved. The results showed that rater reliabilities were excellent: the intra-rater reliability was 0.992 (95% CI = 0.989 ± 0.994), and the inter-rater reliability was 0.987 (95% CI = 0.983 ± 0.991). The convergent validities of the VAS-TH, NDI-TH, and mSBST-TH when compared with the CSI-TH were 0.5446, 0.5545, and 0.5136, respectively (p < 0.01). The CSI-TH was developed for use by physical therapists and is reliable. It can be used by physical therapists, whether they are experienced or novices, and has an acceptable correlation to other neck-related questionnaires. The CSI-TH is concise, suitable for clinical use, and lower-priced when compared to the gold standard in diagnosis for patients with cervical spine instability.

Abstract:Abstract Background The aims of this study were to adapt the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) questionnaire into a simplified Chinese version and to assess its reliability, validity, and responsiveness in Chinese-speaking patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) disorders. Methods The simplified Chinese version of the IdFAI (SC-IdFAI) questionnaire was developed with a five-step procedure involving cross-cultural translation and adaptation. Three questionnaires, including the SC-IdFAI, Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36), and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), were administered to the recruited patients. Then, the Cronbach’s alpha value, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change (MDC), Spearman’s correlation coefficient ( r s ), effect size (ES), and standardized response mean (SRM) were calculated to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the SC-IdFAI questionnaire. Results A total of 131, 119, and 86 patients with CAI successfully completed the first, second, and third rounds of the questionnaires, respectively. Good or excellent internal consistency and test–retest reliability were found for the overall scale and subscales of the SC-IdFAI questionnaire. The values for the SEM (1.346) and MDC (3.73) were low, indicating that small clinical changes can be detected by the SC-IdFAI questionnaire. The correlations of the SC-IdFAI with FAAM and SF-36 were generally in agreement with the a priori hypotheses (85%, 34/40), suggesting the SC-IdFAI questionnaire has good construct validity. Moreover, the results suggest that the SC-IdFAI (ES = 1.123 and SRM = 1.554) has an acceptable level of responsiveness. Conclusion The SC-IdFAI scale may be an effective tool, and it is responsive, reliable and valid for the assessment of Chinese patients suffering from CAI.

Abstract:Cultures. The avirulent cultures2 of Corynebacterium diphtheriae used in the followNring experiments were part of a shipment of field cultures received from the Division of Laboratories of the California State Department of Public Health in 1949. The subcultures used in these experiments have been kept in the lyophilized state since receipt. Cultures no. 770 and no. 1180 were two different isolations from a single diphtheria contact. Cultures no. 1174, 411, and 444 represented three separate isolations from a single case of diphtheria. All five cultures were designated mitis and avirulent by the Division of Laboratories of the California State Department of Public Health. Epidemiologically, there wNas no known relationship between the two individuals from whom the five cultures wvere obtained. To be certain that no change in virulence had occurred during transfer to and from the lyophilized state, all of these strains were tested both intradermally and subcutaneously in guinea pigs, and all were found to be avirulent. As a further check, the five avirulent strains were submitted to the routine virulencetesting procedures of two additional laboratories, and all results wNere reported as negative.3 In vitro plate toxigenicity4 tests conducted repeatedly on these cultures also were negative. Abstract:AIMS:To translate the English version of Tegner Activity Score into a Simplified-Chinese version (Tegner-C) and evaluate its psychometric properties. METHODS:Tegner-C was cross-culturally adapted according to established guidelines. The validity and reliability of Tegner-C were assessed in 78 participants, with 19-20 participants in each of the four groups: before anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (pre-ACLR) group, 2-3 months after ACLR group, 3-12 months after ACLR group, and healthy control group. Each participant was asked to complete the Tegner-C and Chinese version of International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC-SKF-C) twice, with an interval of 5±2 days. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC2, 1) was used to assess the reliability and Spearman's rank correlation was used for construct validity. RESULTS:The ICC2,1 was higher than 0.90 for all groups except in the pre-ACLR group, for which the ICC2,1 was 0.71 (0.41, 0.87) (All with p<0.001). The absolute reliability as evaluated by the smallest detectable change was 0.43, 2.12, 0.89, and 0.44 for the healthy control group, pre-ACLR group, 2-3 months after ACLR group, and 3-12 months after ACLR group, respectively. Neither a ceiling effect nor a floor effect was observed for any group. Significant difference was observed for both Tegner-C and IKDC-SKF-C scores between the control and the other three groups (all with p<0.001), and between pre-ACLR and the 2-3 months after ACLR group (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS:Tegner-C demonstrated comparable psychometric properties to the original English version and thus is reliable and valid for Chinese-speaking patients with ACL injury.

Abstract:The objective of the study was to cross-culturally adapt the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) into a regional Indian language (Tamil) and to test the reliability and linguistic validity of the index in Tamil-speaking Indian participants. Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric testing of SPADI was undertaken at the Outpatient Physiotherapy Department of the Sri Ramachandra University Hospital in Chennai, India. The Test-retest reliability was quantified using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach alpha was calculated to assess internal consistency of the Tamil questionnaire. The construct validity was assessed using Spearman rank correlation coefficients. The reliability of the total Tamil SPADI and its subsets (Intraclass correlation coefficient >0.90) were found to be higher than that of the English SPADI and the German SPADI in this population. The internal consistency of the Tamil SPADI (Cronbach's alpha >0.95) was slightly higher than the English and the German versions. Thus, the cross-culturally adapted version of the English SPADI into a regional Indian language (Tamil) is easy to use and is a reliable and valid measure of shoulder pain and disability in the Tamil speaking population.

Background:The Ankle Ligament Reconstruction-Return to Sport After Injury (ALR-RSI) scale can be utilized for assessing patients who have previously sustained lateral ankle ligament injury before returning to sport. Given its original development for use in different languages, it is essential to translate and validate this scale for application to the Chinese population.Purposes:To translate and culturally adapt the ALR-RSI scale into a Chinese version and assess its reliability and validity.Study Design:Cohort study (Diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2.Methods:The procedure of translation and cross-cultural adaptation was performed following the recommended guidelines and the Chinese version of ALR-RSI (ALR-RSI-CHN) was conducted in patients with lateral ankle ligament surgery. Feasibility was assessed by floor/ceiling effects. Reliability was assessed by using Cronbach α as a measure to analyze internal consistency, while the intraclass correlation coefficient was utilized to examine test-retest reliability. Validity was assessed by using Spearman coefficients to analyze the correlations between ALR-RSI-CHN, the Karlsson scale, and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale.Results:A total of 66 participants were included. The ALR-RSI-CHN scale showed good feasibility with no floor/ceiling effects. The internal consistency of the scale was adequate with a Cronbach α of 0.93, and test-retest reliability was excellent with an interclass correlation coefficient of 0.97 (95% CI, 0.92-0.99). The ALR-RSI-CHN scale demonstrated moderate correlation with the Karlsson scale (r = 0.48 [range, 0.26-0.65]) and strong correlation with the AOFAS scale (r = 0.55 [range, 0.35-0.71]). A significant difference in ALR-RSI-CHN scores was observed between patients who returned to sports and those who did not, with respective scores of 53.60 (range, 44.50-62.69) and 42.25 (range, 35.51-49) (P = .04).Conclusion:The study demonstrated that the ALR-RSI-CHN scale had satisfactory psychometric properties, rendering it a feasible, reliable, and valid instrument for evaluating patients who have lateral ligament surgery in China.

Abstract: The study aim was to cross-culturally adapt the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) into a Spanish-language version (IdFAI-Sp), which would then be validated and its psychometric properties evaluated for use in possible cases of ankle instability. The cross-cultural adaptation was performed following the guidelines of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. Pearson correlations were calculated to assess the convergent validity between IdFAI and the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool. Cronbach's alpha and test re-test reliability values were calculated and floor/ceiling effects analysed. Construct validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The study population was composed of 110 participants, with a mean age of 40.49 years (10.43) and of whom 62 (56.36%) were female. Good test-retest results were obtained, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.85 (ICC2,1: 95% CI: 0.82 − 0.88). The structure matrix was examined by CFA, which revealed a three-factor solution that accounted for 79.89% of the variance. The IdFAI-Sp obtained an excellent fit (RMSEA 0.068, GFI 0.94, CFI 0.98 and NFI 0.97). This study validates the IdFAI-Sp questionnaire, corroborating its value to researchers and medical professionals as a self-reported outcomes measure for use with a Spanish-speaking population.The Spanish-language version of the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability questionnaire (IdFAI-Sp) is a valid and reliable tool.The IdFAI-Sp enables researchers and healthcare professionals to identify and classify chronic ankle instability among Spanish-speaking patients.Accordingly, it can be considered a useful clinical instrument.Aapplication of the questionnaire before and after treatment can reveal the patient's degree of recovery over time.

Abstract:Background: The Lysholm knee score and Tegner activity scale are frequently used patient-reported outcome measures in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries because of their excellent psychometric properties. These questionnaires were originally developed in the English language. Purpose: To translate and cross-culturally adapt these measures into the Indonesian language and study their validity and reliability so that they can be used in the Indonesian-speaking population with ACL injuries. Study design: Cohort study (diagnosis/symptom prevalence); Level of evidence, 2. Methods: After a forward-backward translation procedure and cross-cultural adaptation, validity and reliability were investigated. A total of 253 patients with an ACL injury were sent 4 questionnaires (36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Kujala anterior knee pain scale, Indonesian Lysholm knee score [I-LK], and Indonesian Tegner activity scale [I-TS]). The responses of those patients were analyzed. Following COSMIN guidelines, construct validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, floor and ceiling effects, and measurement errors were determined. The Bland-Altman method was used to explore absolute agreement. Results: A total of 106 patients (42% response rate) were included in this study. Construct validity was considered to be good, as more than 75% of the predefined hypotheses on correlations between the I-LK, I-TS, and other measures were confirmed. Reliability proved excellent, with a high test-retest correlation for both questionnaires (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.99). Bland-Altman analysis showed no systematic bias between testing and retesting. The internal consistency of the I-LK was good (Cronbach alpha = 0.73). For the I-LK and I-TS, floor and ceiling effects were less than 15% (floor: 0% and 4.7%, respectively; ceiling: 12.3% and 3.8%, respectively); the standard error of measurement was 1.8 and 0.9, respectively; the minimal detectable change at the individual level was 5.1 and 0.6, respectively; and the minimal detectable change at the group level was 2.4 and 0.5, respectively. Conclusion: Both the I-LK and I-TS appear to be good evaluation tools for Indonesian-speaking patients with an ACL injury.

Abstract:Objective: To culturally adapt the VISA-A into a simplified Chinese version (VISA-A-CHN) and test its measurement properties. Design: Methodological study; Setting: Hospital and university laboratory. Participants: 240 subjects were divided into the healthy (n = 80), at-risk (n = 80), and tendinopathy groups (n = 80). Main outcomes measures: The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and the floor and ceiling effect of the VISA-A-CHN. Results: The VISA-A-CHN showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's a = 0.73, 95% CI 0.63 to 0.81), excellent test-retest reliability (ICC3A,1 = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.95 to 0.98), standard error of measurement of 2.2 points, minimum detectable change of 6.0 points, with no floor and ceiling effects. Two factors (pain/symptoms and physical function/activity) were extracted in exploratory factor analysis. There were moderate associations of VISA-A-CHN score with scores of Lower Extremity Functional Scale and SF-36 physical components (rs = 0.53-0.74, P < 0.01) but low associations with SF-36 mental components (rs = 0.12-0.22, P > 0.05). VISA-A-CHN mean score of Achilles tendinopathy group was significantly lower than those of healthy and at-risk groups (P < 0.01). Conclusions: The VISA-A-CHN is equivalent to the original version in terms of language and measurement properties. Abstract:Journal of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Rehabilitation, Ahead of Print. The Manchester–Oxford Foot Questionnaire is a validated English 16-item patient-reported outcome measure for evaluating foot and ankle function. This study aimed to translate a Cantonese Chinese version of the questionnaire and evaluate its validity and reliability among patients with foot and ankle disorders. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were conducted by forward translation, synthesis of translated versions, backward translation, review, and pre-testing by a panel of healthcare professionals. The test-retest reliability was conducted within 2–4 weeks. Internal consistency and construct validity were evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale and Short-Form 36. 135 participants were recruited to complete the validation process. The overall reliability coefficient constituted 0.86 (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.72–0.93). A strong, statistically significant correlation was found between the bodily pain subscale of Short-Form 36 and the pain subscale of the Cantonese Chinese-Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (r = −0.77, p < 0.001). This was similar to the pain subscale of the Cantonese Chinese-Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire and visual analogue pain score (r = 0.77, p < 0.001). The overall score for the Cantonese Chinese Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire between the healthy control group and the pathological group was statistically different (p < 0.001). A good consistency level was found in the questionnaire with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.78, 0.86, 0.78, 0.85 for pain, walking/standing, social interaction, and the overall domain of the Cantonese Chinese-Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire, respectively. Therefore, this questionnaire can be adapted as a reliable clinical assessment and an outcome measure among the Cantonese Chinese-speaking population.
Reliability and Construct Validity of Computational Thinking Scale for Junior High School Students: Thai Adaptation

Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) is defined as a broad spectrum of cognitive abilities including creativity, algorithmic reasoning, critical analysis, problem-solving, collaborative thinking, and communication. There are currently not many self-rated CT skill measurements available. One of these tools for measurement is the Korkmaz Computational Thinking Scale (CTS). The purposes of this present study are to adapt the Korkmaz CTS into Thai and to assess its reliability and validity. Employing a convenience sampling method, data from 3,241 junior high school students in Thailand were collected using Thai translated Korkmaz CTS. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were used for data analysis. According to the findings, Thai version of Korkmaz CTS exhibited reliable psychometric properties. However, one item from the Thai CTS was eliminated during the EFA process whereas six items were removed during the CFA. Thus, the Thai CTS can be used as a self-rating instrument to assess the CT of junior high school students in addition to high school and undergraduate students. Schools can measure students’ CT faster and with cost-saving.
Foot and ankle ability measure to measure functional limitations in patients with foot and ankle disorders: a Chinese cross-cultural adaptation and validation

Abstract:PURPOSE: To perform a cultural adaptation and validation study (internal and external) of the FAAM questionnaire to create the Chinese version of the questionnaire (FAAM-Ch).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two independent professional native translators performed a translation from English to Chinese and reverse translation. Psychometric properties analysis: Internal consistency of measure was analysed through the Cronbach's α coefficients. After extraction by maximum likelihood (EML), the structure factor and construct validity was analysed; to extract a factor, it was necessary to complete the following three requirements: ≥10% of variance, Eigenvalue >1.0 and scree plot inflection point. Standard error measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change 90 (MDC90) were calculated. FFI-Taiwan version, SF12v2, and EuroQol5D were used for criterion validity analysis.RESULTS: The internal consistency (Cronbach's α) for specific FAAM-Ch subscales was 0.879 (ADL) and 0.901 (Sport); test-retest analysis (interclass correlation) item ranging between 0.758 and 0.970 (ADL: 0758-0946; Sport: 0.911-0.970). Measures error: 3.449% (MDC90) and 1.478% (SEM). Chi-squared value =15228.74 and gl 406) (p < 0.001) and the Kaiser-Meyer-Oklin values (0.919). The correlation level with the FFI is strong, with SF12v2 is between poor and strong and with EuroQoL5d is between moderate and strong Conclusions: FAAM-Chinese version has satisfactory "transversal" psychometric properties, facilitating the inclusion of FAAM-Chinese into research and clinical practice. Implications for Rehabilitation Cross-cultural adaptation of the FAAM-Ch has been performed from the original version. The psychometric properties of the FAAM-Ch indicate satisfactory and consistent results (particularly in the internal consistence, reliability and criterion validity) with the original version. FAAM-Ch can be used by Chinese speaking clinicians and researches.

Abstract:The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:The Knee Numeric-Entity Evaluation Score (KNEES-ACL) is a 41-item condition-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) that was developed for patients with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency and patients after ACL reconstruction. This measure is intended to be used for longitudinal clinical studies. The KNEES-ACL has demonstrated face and content validity and superior responsiveness compared with other PROMs commonly used in patients with an ACL injury. However, this PROM was developed in Danish and has not been appropriately translated and culturally adapted into North American English.Purpose:To translate and culturally adapt the KNEES-ACL from Danish to North American English.Study Design:Cross-sectional study.Methods:Translation from Danish to English and cultural adaptation to a North American context were performed according to the dual panel method. First, the Danish KNEES-ACL was translated by a bilingual panel, which provided multiple English wording options for each item. Second, an English lay panel focus group was formed to determine the wording for each item that best reflected everyday spoken language. Finally, individual think-aloud cognitive interviews were conducted with patients after an ACL injury to evaluate the relevance, comprehensiveness, and comprehensibility of the PROM content and questions. Repeated modifications and testing were performed until a final English version of the KNEES-ACL was constructed.Results:Participants in the lay panel focus group were able to reach unanimous decisions for each of the 41 items. Further changes to 17 items were made after 8 think-aloud interviews with patients with ACL injuries at various time points to ensure that items were relevant and being interpreted consistently among different types of patients. The final KNEES-ACL consisted of 6 domains: Problems with Daily Activities, Mental Impact, Stability, Strength and Control, Pain, and Sport and Physical Activity.Conclusion:The English KNEES-ACL for patients with ACL injuries has undergone appropriate translation and cultural adaptation using established dual panel and cognitive interviewing methods in the population of interest. The psychometric properties of the English KNEES-ACL will likely mirror those established with the Danish version. However, direct validation of the psychometric properties of the English version would be beneficial before widespread use.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of health-related quality of life and physical function is important for determining therapeutic strategies following ankle injuries. The Anglo-American Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) is a valid and reliable self-reported measure to detect functional deficits in chronic lateral ankle instability. The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the FAAM questionnaire for use with German-speaking patients with chronic lateral ankle instability.PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Preoperative and conservatively treated patients with chronic lateral ankle instability. Sport students and volleyball athletes served as control groups.MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: The FAAM was forward and back translated, cross-culturally adapted and validated. The study population completed the FAAM-G questionnaire twice within 3-5 days. Additionally, the patients were scored with the Good ankle laxity classification system. Test-Retest reliability, construct validity and internal consistency were calculated.RESULTS: Reliability and validity of the FAAM-G were examined in presurgical chronic ankle instability patients (n=24), conservatively treated chronic ankle instability patients (n=17), university sport students (n=31) and volleyballers (n=37). Test-retest reliability revealed fair, good, or excellent reliability (inter-class correlation coefficient (ICC)=0.590-0.998; ρ=0.528-1.000). Construct validity, tested between the FAAM-G subscores and the Good et al ankle laxity classification system demonstrated strong correlations (ρ = -0.819 to -0.861).CONCLUSIONS: The original FAAM questionnaire was successfully translated and cross-culturally adapted from English to German. Corresponding to the Anglo-American version, the FAAM-G is a reliable and valid questionnaire for self-reported assessment of pain and disability in German-speaking patients suffering from chronic ankle instability.

Abstract:Many animals have developed systems for sensing environmental conditions during evolution. In sensory cells, receptor molecules are responsible for their sensing abilities. In light sensing, most animals capture light information via rhodopsin-like photoreceptive proteins known as opsin-based pigments. A body of evidence from comparisons of amino acid sequences and in vitro experiments demonstrates that opsins have phylogenetically and functionally diversified during evolution and suggests that the phylogenetic diversity in opsins correlates with the variety of molecular properties of opsin-based pigments. In this review, we discuss the various molecular properties of opsin-based pigments and their contribution to light-sensing ability by providing two examples: i) contribution of photoregeneration ability and Chromophore retinal binding property of an Opn3 homolog to non-visual photoreception, and ii) contribution of an absorption characteristic of a visual pigment to depth perception in jumping spiders.
A validation study on the traditional Chinese version of Spinal Appearance Questionnaire for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract:Purpose “Simplified Chinese” version of Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (SC-SAQ) for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) was available but did not fit for communities using “Traditional Chinese” as their primary language. We developed a traditional Chinese version of SAQ (TC-SAQ) and evaluated its reliability and validity. Methods TC-SAQ was administered to 112 AIS patients, of which 101 bilingual (English and Chinese) patients completed E-SAQ and the traditional Chinese version of Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire (TC-SRS-22). Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were evaluated. Concurrent validity was evaluated by comparing TC-SAQ score with E-SAQ score, and convergent validity by comparing TC-SAQ score with TC-SRS-22 self-image domain score, and discriminant validity by analyzing the relationship between TC-SAQ score and patients’ characteristics. Results Internal consistency of individual TC-SAQ domain was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.785 to 0.940), except for general (Cronbach’s α = 0.665) and shoulders (Cronbach’s α = 0.421) domain. Test–retest reliability of TC-SAQ was good (ICCs of each domain from 0.798 to 0.865). Concurrent validity demonstrated an excellent correlation between TC-SAQ and E-SAQ scores ( r = 0.820 to 0.954, P < 0.0001 for all domains). Correlation between TC-SAQ domains and TC-SRS-22 self-image domain was weak to moderate. TC-SAQ total score and individual domain scores (except waist and chest domains) were positively correlated to major curve magnitude. Conclusions TC-SAQ had good internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Concurrent validity evaluated against the original English version was excellent. TC-SAQ was both reliable and valid for clinical use for AIS patients using traditional Chinese as their primary language.

Introduction:The Lysholm knee score and Tegner activity scale are frequently used patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury because of their excellent psychometric properties.Objectives:To assess the validity, reliability, and responsiveness of the Indonesian version of Lysholm and Tegner scales for use in the Indonesian-speaking ACL population.Material & Methods:After a forward-and-backward translation procedure and cross-cultural adaptation, validity, reliability, and responsiveness were investigated. The responses of 106 ACL injury patients on four questionnaires – Indonesian Lysholm knee score (I-LK), Indonesian Tegner scale (I-TS), Short Form–36, and Kujala scores – were used. Following COSMIN guidelines, construct validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, floor and ceiling effects, measurement error, and responsiveness were determined. The Bland and Altman method was used to explore absolute agreement.Results:Construct validity is good, as more than 75% of the predefined hypotheses on correlations between I-LK, I-TS and other scores were confirmed. Reliability proved excellent, with a high test-retest correlation for both questionnaires (ICC = 0.99). Bland and Altman analyses showed no systematic bias between test and retest. Internal consistency of I-LK was good (Cronbach alpha = .73). For I-LK and I-TS, respectively, floor and ceiling effects were less than 15% (floor 0%, 4.7%; ceiling 12.3%, 3.8%); standard error of measurement (SEM) 1.8 and 0.9; minimal detectable change at the individual level (MDCind) 5.1 and 0.6, and at the group level (MDCgrp) 2.4 and 0.5. Responsiveness was considered good, especially at the group level.Conclusion:The I-LK and I-TS appears to be a good evaluation instrument for Indonesian patients with anterior cruciate ligament injuries.
