Abstract:The poet's language can evoke strong emotions, in contrast with effective science writing, which consists of short sentences with single ideas embedded within strictly limited paragraphs of 10–15 lines. This description might be interpreted as a prescription for science writing formal verse, but it is not. However, there are those among us who are gifted in storytelling that bridges the gap between the public and science communities. This issue has produced a wide range of commentary on the intersection of biology and public awareness and the importance of language that makes this communication successful. Rogayan tells us about an important environmentalist influencer, Celine Murillo, in "Green-fluencer speaks: Mainstreaming Philippine biodiversity through social media" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae055), who is able to effectively engage the public on the importance of biodiversity through the use of local names in the people's first language. Rogayan's Letter was motivated by Fish and colleagues' earlier article in BioScience , "Language matters for biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae014), and who so eloquently comment in their response, "Lingua franca or lingua cultura? Understanding the language of biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae076), that the rich and diverse culture of human language reveals the "often remarkable and rather imaginative ways in which biodiversity comes to be understood by people through language-based experience." Following this theme, in "The Pocosin's lesson" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae078), Emanuel, in a Thinking of Biology contribution, provides an example of the importance of developing genuine relationships with people who have deep, multigenerational expertise about the places we work and the importance of employing humility as we seek to learn about those places. Euro-American colonization of the United States caused the devasting loss of important Indigenous knowledge, and for those of us who are not indigenous to the places where we work, we have an obligation to not add to the loss by creating false "knowledge."

Abstract:SUMMARY Biology today is at a crossroads. The molecular paradigm, which so successfully guided the discipline throughout most of the 20th century, is no longer a reliable guide. Its vision of biology now realized, the molecular paradigm has run its course. Biology, therefore, has a choice to make, between the comfortable path of continuing to follow molecular biology's lead or the more invigorating one of seeking a new and inspiring vision of the living world, one that addresses the major problems in biology that 20th century biology, molecular biology, could not handle and, so, avoided. The former course, though highly productive, is certain to turn biology into an engineering discipline. The latter holds the promise of making biology an even more fundamental science, one that, along with physics, probes and defines the nature of reality. This is a choice between a biology that solely does society's bidding and a biology that is society's teacher.

Abstract:This paper considers the needs of speech recognition-based dialogues for smart homes, and proposes a structure to allow effective speech recognition in such circumstances. A smart home system based around the Freevo home theatre platform, and the Sphinx2 speech recognition engine has been designed to implement the features and grammar optimization described. In addition, the particular requirements of complexity and size minimisation for embedded systems are discussed. In practical terms we propose a method of continuously variable vocabulary size to maintain required speech recognition accuracy in a smart home context.

Abstract:Social Studies of Science, Ahead of Print. The article attends to everyday practices in a laboratory of neural genetics that studies olfaction, with the fruit fly as its model organism. Practices in neural genetics exhibit one of the 'post' aspects in post-genomic science – a turn to the environment. To get at how laboratory members engage body-environment continuities, I pay attention to an occasion of designing experimental chambers for an optogenetics study. As practitioners deal with the body's continuities with the world by engaging the spatial character of olfaction, their accounts exhibit qualities of feelings of immediate experience, relatable to C.S. Peirce's phenomenological category of Firstness. While these traces of Firstness inevitably manifest themselves in mixtures with the other two of Peirce's categories – namely, Secondness and Thirdness – noticing them allows for an engagement of the environment that goes beyond action and meaning. I reflect on that environment by considering the involvement of scientists' bodies in life with flies, while not forgetting my inhabitation of the laboratory space. Rather than relying on a cross-mapping of attributes known from the human sphere (intentional states or features of the human body) while managing a measurable space observed from the outside, this is an environment lived from within and with others. I conclude the article by proposing its noticing as an orientation toward ecological preoccupations.

Abstract:Since graduating from college as an aspiring structural biologist 30 years ago, I have followed progress in the field with intermittent but genuine interest. To me, structural biology represents 'the road not taken' 1 , as I have instead dedicated my career to other pursuits. Here, I reflect on how keeping in touch with a field I left behind long ago continues to bring me joy and fulfillment. Despite no longer working in structural biology, I felt an unexpected connection to it on 9 October, when I heard the Nobel Prize in Chemistry announcement on the radio as I prepared breakfast. Three researchers — David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper — had been awarded the prize for pioneering work in protein design and structure prediction. I didn't recognize the names at that point, but I knew of Rosetta and AlphaFold. My mind drifted to memories of staring at stereo protein diagrams, trying — and failing — to see the 3D structures. Then, I went on with my day.

Abstract:This study investigates nineteenth century natural history practices through the lens of the Actor-Network Theory, which posits that scientific practice is shaped by an intricate network of interactions between human and non-human actors. At the core of this research is the analysis of correspondence between Charles Darwin and his collaborators during the Cirripedia Project, which unveils a complex landscape of negotiations with illustrators, funders, specimen owners, and translators, among other stakeholders and interested parties. The study goes beyond the final outcomes of scientific research, delving into behind-the-scenes interactions, and hidden constructions, shedding light on the complex dynamics and actors that conventional scientific narratives often overlook. In general, this approach provides a detailed and insightful view of the underlying processes of nineteenth-century scientific practice, underscoring the importance of epistolary correspondence as a central element in producing scientific knowledge at the time, and in particular it reveals to us how much Darwin was himself involved in the production of his famous work on barnacles. By emphasizing the intricacies of research, this study enriches our understanding of Darwin's work as well as natural history practices in the 19th century, highlighting the complexity and diversity of actors and agents involved in shaping scientific knowledge.

Abstract:Field work is an essential component not just for organismal biology, but also for the expanding umbrella of disciplines which have turned their attention towards living systems. Observing organisms in naturalistic contexts is a critical component of discovery; however, conducting field research can be a massive barrier for scientists who do not have experience working with organisms in a naturalistic context under challenging field conditions. Here we propose 8 critical steps for organizing and executing interdisciplinary curiosity-driven field research, drawing on the insights from The in Situ Jungle Biomechanics Lab (JBL). The JBL program is a field research course that helps early-career scientists gain experience in organizing and conducting interdisciplinary field research. JBL uses a curiosity-driven approach to field science education by encouraging early-career researchers to explore scientific questions in the Peruvian Amazon with a non-prescriptive approach to research output. We achieve an inclusive research space by bringing scientists from across disciplines together, with local communities to collaborate and spark new questions and ideas. To stoke curiosity, the JBL imparts a naturalist tradition set forth by organismal biologists of the 20th century who have extolled the merits of observing the natural world as a form of scientific exploration.

Abstract:The `Cyborg Astrobiologist' (CA) has undergone a second geological field trial, at a red sandstone site in northern Guadalajara, Spain, near Riba de Santiuste. The Cyborg Astrobiologist is a wearable computer and video camera system that has demonstrated a capability to find uncommon interest points in geological imagery in real-time in the field. The first (of three) geological structures that we studied was an outcrop of nearly homogeneous sandstone, which exhibits oxidized-iron impurities in red and and an absence of these iron impurities in white. The white areas in these ``red beds'' have turned white because the iron has been removed by chemical reduction, perhaps by a biological agent. The computer vision system found in one instance several (iron-free) white spots to be uncommon and therefore interesting, as well as several small and dark nodules. The second geological structure contained white, textured mineral deposits on the surface of the sandstone, which were found by the CA to be interesting. The third geological structure was a 50 cm thick paleosol layer, with fossilized root structures of some plants, which were found by the CA to be interesting. A quasi-blind comparison of the Cyborg Astrobiologist's interest points for these images with the interest points determined afterwards by a human geologist shows that the Cyborg Astrobiologist concurred with the human geologist 68% of the time (true positive rate), with a 32% false positive rate and a 32% false negative rate. Abstract:In 1993, the same year that The Sonar of Dolphins was published, Whitlow Au transitioned from the U.S. Navy’s Naval Ocean Systems Center to the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Thus began a second professional act, so to speak, of field-based research and mentoring the next generation of marine bioacousticians. An electrical engineer doing field biology may not seem like the natural order of things at first, but the combination of Whitlow’s engineering and acoustic prowess coupled with the enthusiasm and energy of bright young biologists resulted in a powerful research team. Thanks to Whitlow’s ingenuity and commitment to advancing the state of the art, Hawaii’s coastlines and marine habitats around the world were explored like never before. A lack of funding or the availability of appropriate instrumentation were never an obstacle, but rather became opportunities for creativity and invention. Whitlow and his students’ research on dolphins, their prey, snapping shrimp, humpback whales, and other taxa led to many pioneering breakthroughs both in biology and technology. While Whitlow’s scientific legacy could be measured by his more than 200 publications, it is the hundreds of lives he influenced though his academic and professional service that will ultimately be his greatest mark.
