The Dynamic Effect of the Valleculae on Singing Voice - An Exploratory Study Using 3D Printed Vocal Tracts

Abstract:Background and objectives: The valleculae can be seen as a pair of side branches of the human vocal tract like the piriform fossae. While the acoustic properties of the piriform fossae have been explored in detail, there is little evidence of full exploration of the acoustic properties of the valleculae. A recent investigation (Vampola, Horáček, & Švec, 2015), using a finite element model of a single vowel /a/, suggests that the valleculae created two antiresonances and two resonances in the high frequency region (above 4kHz) along with those produced by the piriform sinuses. In the current study, we investigate, in multiple vowels, the acoustic influences of the valleculae in singing voice, using 3-D printed vocal tracts. Method: MRI data were collected from an operatic tenor singing English vowels /a/, /u/, /i/. The images of each vowel were segmented and edited to create a pair of tracts, where one is the original and one had the valleculae digitally removed.The printed tracts were then placed atop a vocal tract organ loudspeaker, excited by white noise. Recordings were made with a microphone placed in front of the mouths of the tracts, to measure their frequency responses. Results: Dimensional changes were observed in valleculae of different vowels, with the long-term average spectra of the recordings illustrating clear differences between the frequency responses of the va-nova (valleculae - no valleculae) pairs, which varies with vowels. Conclusion: The experiment demonstrates the dynamic1 nature of the shapes of the valleculae in the human vocal tract and its acoustic consequences. It provides evidence that the valleculae have similar acoustic properties to the piriform fossae but with larger variations, and in some cases can influence acoustically the frequency region below 4kHz. The results suggest that large volume valleculae have the potential to impede to some extent the acoustic effect of the singers formant cluster and small valleculae may do the reverse. Since the volume of the valleculae is observed to be largely dependent on tongue movement and also with changes to the uttered vowel, it can be assumed that the high frequency energy, including that within the singer's formant region, could be vowel dependent. Strategies to control valleculae volumes are likely to be highly relevant to voice pedagogy practice as well as singing performance.

Abstract:The ability to diagnose the integrity of the transformer windings and core through online diagnostic method would be useful for electric utilities who are concerned about the availability and reliability of power transformer. This paper presents results of a study to identify the condition of power transformer windings and core by measuring the vibration signal of outdoor transformer in normal operating conditions. The obtained vibration signal which is recorded from various places on the transformer tank is analyzed by matching the signal frequency spectrum with transformer load. From this study, mechanical integrity of windings and core inside the transformer is determined by comparing the correlation between each main frequency of vibration signal and the load among similar transformer.

Amplitude Effects of Vocal Tract Resonance Adjustments When Singing Louder

Abstract:In the literature on vocal pedagogy we may find suggestions to increase the mouth opening when singing louder. It is known that sopranos tend to sing loud high notes with a wider mouth opening which raises the frequency of the first resonance of the vocal tract (fR1) to tune it close to the fundamental. Our experiment with classically trained male singers revealed that they also tended to raise the fR1 with the dynamics at pitches where the formant tuning does not seem relevant. The analysis by synthesis showed that such behaviour may contribute to the strengthening of the singer's formant by several dB-s and to a rise in the centre of spectral gravity. The contribution of the fR1 raising to the overall sound level was less consistent. Changing the extent of the mouth opening with the dynamics may create several simultaneous semantic cues that signal how prominent the produced sound is and how great the physical effort by the singer is. The diminishing of the mouth opening when singing piano may also have an importance as it helps singers to produce a quieter sound by increasing the distance between the fR1 and higher resonances, which lowers the transfer function of the vocal tract at the relevant spectral regions.
Female Classical Singers Apply Different Resonatory Strategies Than Male: Insights from an MRI-Based Analysis

Abstract:Introduction: The morphology of the vocal tract plays a crucial role in singing. Adjustments of the lower part of the vocal tract are essential for voice quality and timbre. Structured investigations of this region are challenging due to the small extent of the morphological modifications. Material and methods: This study analyzed the morphology of the endolaryngeal tube and parts of the surrounding hypopharynx for the sustained vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, //, and // by 11 female singer subjects who were at the beginning of their academic singing studies. As in a previous study with male subjects, analysis was based on two phonatory conditions: a natural, speech-like phonation and a singing phonation, like in classical singing. By means of 3D image processing from magnetic resonance imaging, multiple measures were derived. The data were statistically analyzed using linear mixed effects models and ANOVA. Results: The female singers enlarged the ratio of the endolaryngeal tube to the adjacent hypopharynx for singing. Discussion: In contrast to the findings of the male singers in a previous study, the ratios of the laryngeal volumes to the neighboring hypopharynx increased while singing. The female singer subjects of the present study increased those ratios, mediated by an over-proportional enlargement of the endolaryngeal tube. Existing acoustic differences to male singers are thus given a morphological basis. Conclusion: The study gives insight into the characteristic adjustments of the vocal tract of female classical singers. The resonatory strategies for females in classical singing differ from those found in males.
Biomechanics of sound production in high-pitched classical singing

Abstract:Voice production of humans and most mammals is governed by the MyoElastic-AeroDynamic (MEAD) principle, where an air stream is modulated by self-sustained vocal fold oscillation to generate audible air pressure fluctuations. An alternative mechanism is found in ultrasonic vocalizations of rodents, which are established by an aeroacoustic (AA) phenomenon without vibration of laryngeal tissue. Previously, some authors argued that high-pitched human vocalization is also produced by the AA principle. Here, we investigate the so-called "whistle register" voice production in nine professional female operatic sopranos singing a scale from C6 (≈ 1047 Hz) to G6 (≈ 1568 Hz). Super-high-speed videolaryngoscopy revealed vocal fold collision in all participants, with closed quotients from 30 to 73%. Computational modeling showed that the biomechanical requirements to produce such high-pitched voice would be an increased contraction of the cricothyroid muscle, vocal fold strain of about 50%, and high subglottal pressure. Our data suggest that high-pitched operatic soprano singing uses the MEAD mechanism. Consequently, the commonly used term "whistle register" does not reflect the physical principle of a whistle with regard to voice generation in high pitched classical singing.

Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscle Activity and Vocal Economy in Professionally Trained Voices During Vocal Vibrato

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine the extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity and vocal economy during two different singing conditions (straight-tone- vs vibrato singing) over a physiologically relevant singing range. Methods: Thirty professional singers or voice coaches participated in the study. The participants sang a sustained /a:/ vowel for approximately 5seconds, once in straight-tone singing conditions and once more in vibrato. The target pitches were C3, F3, A3, C4, F4, A4, and C5. Surface electromyographic (sEMG) measures were performed in the infrahyoid (IH)- and the suprahyoid (SH) muscle region. Contact quotient (CQ), sound pressure level (SPL), and fundamental frequencies were measured to derive the electroglottographic-based vocal economy parameter quasi-output cost ratio (QOCR). Results: sEMG measures show that IH and SH muscles significantly increased in activity with ascending pitch. IH and SH muscle activity was also significantly higher when singing in vibrato than straight-tone. Moreover, SPL also increased with ascending pitch and when sung in vibrato. CQ increased and QOCR decreased as pitch ascended but did not significantly change when sung in vibrato. Conclusion: Singing higher pitches was generally associated with higher extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity and lower QOCR values. When comparing two singing conditions, extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity was higher during vibrato, implicating that IH and the SH muscles may contribute to rhythmic pulsations of pitch modulation. Although the QOCR value did not show significant differences between the two singing conditions, a significantly higher SPL during vibrato may offer some acoustical and physiological advantages. Results also indicate that extrinsic muscle activity may not be reliably measure vocal economy.
Three registers in an untrained female singer analyzed by videokymography, strobolaryngoscopy and sound spectrography

Abstract:There has been a lack of objective data on the singing voice registers, particularly on the so called "whistle" register, occurring in the top part of the female pitch range, which is accessible only to some singers. This study offers unique strobolaryngoscopic and high-speed (7812.5 imagess) videokymographic data on the vocal fold behavior of an untrained female singer capable of producing three distinct voice qualities, i.e., the chest, head and whistle registers. The sound was documented spectrographically. The transition from chest to head register, accompanied by pitch jumps, occurred around tones B4-C#5 (500-550 Hz) and was found to be associated with a slight decrease in arytenoids adduction, resulting in decrease of the closed quotient. The register shifts from head to whistle, also accompanied by pitch jumps, occurred around tones E5-B5 (670-1000 Hz) without any noticeable changes in arytenoids adduction. Some evidence was found for the vocal tract influence on this transition. The mechanism of the vocal fold vibration in whistle register was found principally similar to that at lower registers: vibrations along the whole glottal length and vertical phase differences (indicated by sharp lateral peaks in videokymography) were seen on the vocal folds up to the highest tone G6 (1590 Hz).

Abstract:Summary Objectives This study aimed to estimate vocal loading in loud phonation of a vowel and two widely used semiocclusion voice exercises (SOVTEs). Impact stress ( IS ) was estimated from glottal closing speed, inertial forces from the second derivative of glottal opening and closing. Study design Experimental study in vivo . Methods A vocally healthy male sustained the [o:] vowel with habitual loudness and loudly: (1) without a tube, (2) into a silicone "Lax Vox" type tube (35 cm in length, 10 mm in diameter) outer end submerged 10 cm in water, and (3) into a straw (length 12.6 cm, diameter 2.5 mm) the outer end in air. He tried to use equal effort in all loud samples. High-speed video-laryngo-endoscopy was performed with a rigid scope. Oral air pressure (P oral ) was registered in a mouthpiece through which the endoscope was inserted into the larynx and to which the tubes were attached air-tightly. Results Compared with vowel phonation at habitual loudness , mean of maximal glottal width (max GW) increased by 44.1% for loud tube phonation and decreased by 1.8% for loud straw phonation, and mean absolute value of minimum GW time derivative d min increased by 57.1% for tube and by 29.5% for straw suggesting faster glottal closing. Compared with loud vowel phonation , max GW increased by 22.6% for loud tube phonation, while it decreased by 16.6% for loud straw phonation. For the tube, d min de creased by 7.6% and for the straw by 23.8%. Maximal acceleration (ACC) and deceleration (DC) values were larger for the tube and smaller for the straw than the values for both vowel phonations. Conclusions IS , deduced from d min , increased in loud SOVTEs compared to vowel phonation at a conversational loudness, but remained lower in loud SOVTEs than in loud vowel phonation, particularly with a narrow straw, which also reduced inertial forces, as suggested by the reduced ACC and DC.

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modeling of the Singer's Formant Cluster Optimization by Epilaryngeal Narrowing With and Without Velopharyngeal Opening

Abstract:This study aimed to find the optimal geometrical configuration of the vocal tract (VT) to increase the total acoustic energy output of human voice in the frequency interval 2-3.5 kHz "singer's formant cluster," (SFC) for vowels [a:] and [i:] considering epilaryngeal changes and the velopharyngeal opening (VPO). The study applied 3D volume models of the vocal and nasal tract based on computer tomography images of a female speaker. The epilaryngeal narrowing (EN) increased the total sound pressure level (SPL) and SPL of the SFC by diminishing the frequency difference between acoustic resonances F3 and F4 for [a:] and between F2 and F3 for [i:]. The effect reached its maximum at the low pharynx/epilarynx cross-sectional area ratio 11.4:1 for [a:] and 25:1 for [i:]. The acoustic results obtained with the model optimization are in good agreement with the results of an internationally recognized operatic alto singer. With the EN and the VPO, the VT input reactance was positive over the entire fo singing range (ca 75-1500 Hz). The VPO increased the strength of the SFC and diminished the SPL of F1 for both vowels, but with EN, the SPL decrease was compensated. The effect of EN is not linear and depends on the vowel. Both the EN and the VPO alone and together can support (singing) voice production.

Abstract:Introduction: We examined the effects of four types of voicing on vocal tract movements by comparing the articulatory kinematics of whispered speech to habitual, loud, and soft conditions. Methods: Participants included 10 males and 10 females with no history of communication disorders. They read six stimulus sentences in habitual, loud, soft, and whispered conditions. An electromagnetic articulograph tracked the tongue, jaw, and lip movements. Analysis focused on the words we do from a longer sentence. Vertical tongue/jaw and horizontal lip movements were measured during the production of the retracted and rounded front and back vowels in we do. Results: Soft speech led to smaller and slower lip movements than in the habitual condition. Displacement increased for the tongue and jaw in loud and whispered speech compared to the habitual condition. Tongue and jaw velocity increased for loud but not for whispered speech compared to the habitual condition. Utterance duration increased for loud and whispered conditions. Discussion: The increasing tongue and jaw displacement and velocity from soft to habitual to loud speech reported here is consistent with previous accounts. Whispering was less intense than soft speech, yet it involved larger tongue and jaw movements than habitual speech, possibly reflecting a speaker’s focus on greater articulatory clarity when the acoustic signal is the weakest.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:Resonance tubes are commonly used in voice therapy. These devices modify supraglottal impedance, potentially decreasing the aerodynamic power necessary for phonation. We modeled phonation with resonance tubes in excised larynges and evaluated the effects of varying tube width, tube length, and flow input on phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and phonation threshold flow (PTF). We hypothesized that the increased vocal economy observed in human subjects and several other models would be observed in excised larynges.STUDY DESIGN:Repeated measures excised canine larynx bench experiment with each larynx serving as own control.METHODS:Nine conditions were evaluated, namely control, two tube diameters (17.5 and 6.5mm), three tube lengths (7.8, 15.0, and 30.0cm), and three levels of flow input (80, 114, and 200mL/s). Aerodynamic data were collected for 11 excised canine larynges attached to an artificial vocal tract, and results from each experimental configuration were compared with control.RESULTS:A significant decrease in average PTP occurred compared with control for the 114- and 200-mL/s flow inputs, 30-cm extension, and 17.5- and 6.5-mm constrictions. Average PTF decreased compared with control for every configuration, although statistically significant changes were only observed for 200-mL/s flow and 6.5-mm constriction.CONCLUSIONS:Knowledge regarding the effect of vocal tract alterations could be clinically useful in determining the optimal "straw" configuration for voice therapy. Further exploration of the relationships among width, length, and flow input could provide theoretical support for the development of new therapies and resonance tube devices.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to measure the morphology of the epilaryngeal tube during sustained phonation as a function of loudness variation and to compare subjects of different genders.This is a prospective study.Five female and five male classically trained singers were recorded by magnetic resonance imaging with simultaneous audio recordings while sustaining phonation at three different loudness conditions. Three-dimensional subsections of the vocal tract were segmented on multi-image-based cross-sections. Different volume and area measures were determined and their relation to sound pressure level and loudness condition was analyzed.Male singers tended to narrow the epilaryngeal tube when increasing sound pressure level whereas female singers did not.Strategies of vocal tract adjustments during loudness variation in classical singing appear to be gender specific.

Abstract:The authors investigated the activity of a combination of DDP 80 mg/m2 i.v. followed by VP16 50 mg/m2 on days 2-5 in bronchogenic carcinoma. Twenty-seven patients entered the study (10 small cell carcinoma, 9 squamous cell, 2 adenocarcinomas and 6 histologically undefined). Six patients evidenced partial response (22.3%); one patient (small cell) had complete remission. The toxicity of the regimen was scarce and well-tolerated by patients with an incidence of 88.8% alopecia, and 77.7% nausea and/or vomiting.
Investigating Laryngeal "Tilt" on Same-pitch Phonation-Preliminary Findings of Vocal Mode Metal and Density Parameters as Alternatives to Cricothyroid-Thyroarytenoid "Mix"

Abstract:Objectives: The objective of this work was to study the parameters "metal" and "density" and their combinatory conditions in relation to the vocal modes Overdrive, Edge, and Curbing from the pedagogical method Complete Vocal Technique by means of laryngostroboscopic imaging, high-speed videoendoscopy, electroglottography (EGG), long-time-average spectrum (LTAS), and acoustics. Study design: This is a three-subject exploratory study. Methods: Three singers were recorded performing various metal and density conditions of Overdrive, Edge, and Curbing from the Complete Vocal Technique method by means of laryngostroboscopic imaging using a videonasoendoscopic camera system and the Laryngostrobe program, high-speed videoendoscopy, EGG, LTAS, and acoustic signals using SpeechStudio. Results: A laryngeal tilt was discovered as related to the condition of "reduced density" on same-pitch phonation, with observations of the thyroid cartilage tilting forward, stretching of the mucosa covering the cricoid-arytenoid complex and the posterior cricoid, and an upward posterior, slightly superior, contraction of the middle constrictor muscle in the pharyngeal wall. A resulting associated reduced contact quotient was observed on EGG, as well as a lowered mean sound pressure level. On LTAS, the laryngeal tilt was associated with a decrease of spectral energy in areas between the 7th and the 20th harmonic. The subjects of the study were able to perform the tilt without changing pitch or volume. Conclusions: Singers can perform laryngeal tilt during same-pitch phonation in the vocal modes Overdrive, Edge, and Curbing. The parameters of density and metal establish a more precise and anatomically grounded terminology than "mix register."
The Physiology of Vocal Damping: Historical Overview and Descriptive Insights in Professional Singers

Abstract:Objective: Vocal damping has been historically described as a distinctive phonatory glottic behavior where the posterior part of the vocal folds is strongly adducted and vibration occurs in the anterior part. The aim of the present descriptive study is to analyze anterior glottis phonation patterns in professional singers through a multidimensional approach, in order to better understand the physiological underpinnings of vocal damping and their relation to glottic vibratory mechanisms. Methods: Ten professional singers (five males and five females) with no vocal complaints were recruited. Each subject was asked to produce ascending and descending glissandos in a spontaneous way; sustained vowels and little sung fragments in vocal fry, chest voice, falsetto, and whistle register. Each singer was asked to produce - where possible - damping sounds. A multidimensional investigation including acoustic analysis, electroglottography, and videolaryngostroboscopy was carried out. Results: Among the enrolled singers, nine out of 10 successfully produced vocalizations with a typical anterior-vibrating glottic pattern indicative of damping. All nine singers achieved a damping glottic configuration when vocalizing in the falsetto register and five were consciously able to switch between a full-glottic falsetto and a damping falsetto upon request. Three male and two female singers were able to produce a damping glottic configuration while emitting whistle notes. Three male singers demonstrated damping glottic configurations when producing high pitched chest notes. Conclusions: In conclusion, it is possible to state that damping is an existing and documentable glottic behavior, with a wide range of manifestations across vocal registers. The present preliminary study describes damping in the domains of chest voice, falsetto, and whistle register. A proper damping phenomenon, defined as the modification of the glottic vibratory boundaries according to pitch variations, is described for M2 emissions, both in male and female larynx. The analysis of passaggio patterns allows to describe damping-M2 as a possible vibratory submechanism.
Articulatory and acoustic differences between lyric and dramatic singing in Western classical music

Abstract:Within the realm of voice classification, singers could be sub-categorized by the weight of their repertoire, the so-called "singer's Fach." However, the opposite pole terms "lyric" and "dramatic" singing are not yet well defined by their acoustic and articulatory characteristics. Nine professional singers of different singers' Fach were asked to sing a diatonic scale on the vowel /a/, first in what the singers considered as lyric and second in what they considered as dramatic. Image recording was performed using real time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 25 frames/s, and the audio signal was recorded via an optical microphone system. Analysis was performed with regard to sound pressure level (SPL), vibrato amplitude, and frequency and resonance frequencies as well as articulatory settings of the vocal tract. The analysis revealed three primary differences between dramatic and lyric singing: Dramatic singing was associated with greater SPL and greater vibrato amplitude and frequency as well as lower resonance frequencies. The higher SPL is an indication of voice source changes, and the lower resonance frequencies are probably caused by the lower larynx position. However, all these strategies showed a considerable individual variability. The singers' Fach might contribute to perceptual differences even for the same singer with regard to the respective repertoire.
