Abstract:Introduction: Vowel production in dysarthria tends to be centralized, which is affected by many factors. This study examined the acoustic effects of speaker sex, tones, and speech samples (including sustained vowels, syllables, and sentences) and their interactions on vowel production in Mandarin speakers with poststroke spastic dysarthria. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with poststroke spastic dysarthria (18 males, 10 females) and 21 healthy speakers (11 males, 10 females) with no significant difference in sex and age with dysarthria were recruited. They were asked to read sustained vowels /a, i, u/, 12 syllables, and 12 sentences containing three vowels in four tones (bā, bá, bǎ, bà, bī, bí, bǐ, bì, pū, pú, pǔ, pù). Multiple spectral and temporal acoustic metrics were analyzed. Results: Results showed that regardless of the speech samples or tones, vowel production was more centralized in dysarthria than healthy controls, manifested as the decrease in F1 range, F2 range, vowel space area (VSA), and vowel articulation index (VAI). A similar performance was observed for male speakers compared to females, and vowel duration in males was shorter than females. F1 range, F2 range, VSA, VAI, and vowel duration were significantly different across speech samples and tones, decreasing in the order of vowel-syllable-sentence and T3-T2-T1-T4, respectively. Interactions of group, speaker sex, speech sample, and tone were more sensitive in VAI and vowel duration. Conclusion: VAI and vowel duration were recommended as the prior metrics to the assessment of vowel production. Specific influencing factors (speaker sex, speech sample, and tone) of vowel production need to be considered by speech and language pathologists in the assessment and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Purpose: Literature suggests a dependency of the acoustic metrics, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), on human voice loudness and fundamental frequency ( F 0). Even though this has been explained with different oscillatory patterns of the vocal folds, so far, it has not been specifically investigated. In the present work, the influence of three elicitation levels, calibrated sound pressure level (SPL), F 0 and vowel on the electroglottographic (EGG) and time-differentiated EGG (dEGG) metrics hybrid open quotient (OQ), dEGG OQ and peak dEGG, as well as on the acoustic metrics CPPS and HNR, was examined, and their suitability for voice assessment was evaluated. Method: In a retrospective study, 29 women with a mean age of 25 years (± 8.9, range: 18–53) diagnosed with structural vocal fold pathologies were examined before and after voice therapy or phonosurgery. Both acoustic and EGG signals were recorded simultaneously during the phonation of the sustained vowels /ɑ/, /i/, and /u/ at three elicited levels of loudness (soft/comfortable/loud) and unconstrained F 0 conditions. Results: A linear mixed-model analysis showed a significant effect of elicitation effort levels on peak dEGG, HNR, and CPPS (all p < .01). Calibrated SPL significantly influenced HNR and CPPS (both p < .01). Furthermore, F 0 had a significant effect on peak dEGG and CPPS ( p < .0001). All metrics showed significant changes with regard to vowel (all p < .05). However, the treatment had no effect on the examined metrics, regardless of the treatment type (surgery vs. voice therapy). Conclusions: The value of the investigated metrics for voice assessment purposes when sampled without sufficient control of SPL and F 0 is limited, in that they are significantly influenced by the phonatory context, be it speech or elicited sustained vowels. Future studies should explore the diagnostic value of new data collation approaches such as voice mapping, which take SPL and F 0 effects into account.

Abstract:Land degradation is an important environmental problem, it will become a threat to food security and the sustainable development of socio-economic systems, ultimately affecting the development of humans with global warming‥Xinjiang is a key region in China, in which land degradation is very serious. Combed RS with GIS technology, based on the latest remote sensing data, analyzed the spatial distribution pattern of land degradation in the provincial region of 85 counties in Xingjiang, applied spatial regression model to analyze the relationships between land degradation and influencing factors, formulated the main influencing factors. Land degradation in Xinjiang is from north to south and west to east, with a gradually increasing trend. Severe land degradation is found mainly in the Xinjiang region in the eastern. the main factors of land degradation are vegetation coverage, annual average rainfall, and land reclamation rate with regression coefficients of 381.967, −512.008 and −865.043, respectively.

Abstract:Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vocal fold adduction on voice quality in an ex vivo larynx model.Study Design. Prospective, repeated-measures experiments.Methods. Ten excised canine larynges were mounted on an excised larynx phonation system and measurements were recorded for three different vocal fold adduction levels. Acoustic perturbation measurements of jitter, shimmer, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were calculated from recorded radiated sound histories.Results. Ex vivo experiments indicated that statistically significant increases in the means of jitter (P = 0.005), shimmer (P = 0.002), and SNR (P = 0.011) measures decreased with respect to vocal fold adduction as the independent variable. Theoretical results showed that the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) component of glottal area increased monotonically with prephonatory glottal area.Conclusions. Acoustic perturbation increased with the degree of vocal fold abduction. Ex vivo larynx measurements suggested that a hyperadducted state may be acoustically best. This may be explained theoretically by an increase in DC/AC ratio as the prephonatory area is increased.

Abstract:Vocalization significantly impacts daily human activities by affecting cognitive, physical, and emotional aspects. Despite its importance, physical and social barriers can restrict individuals' ability to express themselves vocally. To address this issue, the authors have proposed an innovative method to enhance vocal agency through auditory and laryngeal vibratory stimuli. However, prior research has predominantly examined the effectiveness of this technique in scenarios involving loud vocalizations, and the validity of this method has thus yet to be sufficiently verified. In this study, we examined the effects of vibratory stimuli on the sense of agency in the case of general vocalizations. Findings revealed that vibratory stimuli applied to areas not directly involved in vocalization, such as the wrist, failed to foster a sense of vocal agency, in stark contrast to the effects observed with stimuli applied to the larynx. These results underscore the importance of directing vibratory stimuli to anatomical regions integral to vocalization to enhance vocal agency effectively. This research has substantial potential to influence the development of interactive and virtual reality technologies and support individuals experiencing speech difficulties.

The Effect of Mandarin Vowels on Acoustic Analysis: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract:Objectives Although vowels are of interest for acoustic analysis in clinics, there is no consensus regarding the effect of vowel selection on acoustic perturbation parameters. This study aimed to reveal the effects of Mandarin vowels on acoustic measurements. Study Design A prospective observational study. Methods This prospective observational study enrolled normal phonation Mandarin speakers at the Otolaryngology Department of the Eye & ENT Hospital affiliated with Fudan University from December 2020 to August 2021. This study recruited 107 normal-voiced Mandarin speakers (59 women and 49 men) with a median age of 26 (22, 33) years old. The objective measures included traditional acoustic parameters (fundamental frequency, harmonic-to-noise ratio, percent jitter, and percent shimmer) and cepstral analysis (smoothed cepstral peak prominence) of six Mandarin vowels (ɑ /a/, o /o/, e /ɤ/, i /i/, u /u/, ü /y/). Results The acoustic analysis revealed no significant differences in the fundamental frequency among vowels. The low vowel /a/ had the highest values for percent jitter and percent shimmer and the lowest harmonic-to-noise ratio value. The back vowel /u/ had the lowest cepstral measures (P < 0.05). Conclusions The acoustic analysis significantly varied across the different Mandarin vowels, and these differences must be considered for the effective clinical application of objective evaluations.

Abstract:Quantized Hopfield networks, where each neuron takes quantized values (e.g, integers), need fewer neurons and connections than the binary or continuous Hopfield networks with the counting method, when applied to integer optimization problems, so they can obtain feasible solutions much more quickly. In spite of this practical effectiveness, although it was shown that the quantized networks converge to an energy minimum state, their dynamics have not well been analyzed, for example, it is unknown which states are energy minimum or not. We clarify the dynamics of quantized Hopfield networks, and show the energy minimum and nonminimum conditions of the feasible and infeasible solutions to the problems in terms of the values of network coefficients. This gives the insight into the practical network tuning.
Simultaneous High-Speed Video Laryngoscopy and Acoustic Aerodynamic Recordings during Vocal Onset of Variable Sound Pressure Level: A Preliminary Study

Abstract:Voicing: requires frequent starts and stops at various sound pressure levels (SPL) and frequencies. Prior investigations using rigid laryngoscopy with oral endoscopy have shown variations in the duration of the vibration delay between normal and abnormal subjects. However, these studies were not physiological because the larynx was viewed using rigid endoscopes. We adapted a method to perform to perform simultaneous high-speed naso-endoscopic video while simultaneously acquiring the sound pressure, fundamental frequency, airflow rate, and subglottic pressure. This study aimed to investigate voice onset patterns in normophonic males and females during the onset of variable SPL and correlate them with acoustic and aerodynamic data. Materials and Methods: Three healthy males and three healthy females were studied by simultaneous high-speed video laryngoscopy and recording with the production of the gesture [pa:pa:] at soft, medium, and loud voices. The fiber optic endoscope was threaded through a pneumotachograph mask for the simultaneous recording and analysis of acoustic and aerodynamic data. Results: The average increase in the sound pressure level (SPL) for the group was 15 dB, from 70 to 85 dB. The fundamental frequency increased by an average of 10 Hz. The flow was increased in two subjects, reduced in two subjects, and remained the same in two subjects as the SPL increased. There was a steady increase in the subglottic pressure from soft to loud phonation. Compared to soft to medium phonation, a significant increase in glottal resistance was observed with medium-to-loud phonation. Videokymogram analysis showed the onset of vibration for all voiced tokens without the need for full glottis closure. In loud phonation, there is a more rapid onset of a larger amplitude and prolonged closure of the glottal cycle; however, more cycles are required to achieve the intended SPL. There was a prolonged closed phase during loud phonation. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of the kymography waveform signal showed a more significant second- and third-harmonic energy above the fundamental frequency with loud phonation. There was an increase in the adjustments in the pharynx with the base of the tongue tilting, shortening of the vocal folds, and pharyngeal constriction. Conclusion: Voice onset occurs in all modalities, without the need for full glottal closure. There was a more significant increase in glottal resistance with loud phonation than that with soft or middle phonation. Vibration analysis of the voice onset showed that more time was required during loud phonation before the oscillation stabilized to a steady state. With increasing SPL, there were significant variations in vocal tract adjustments. The most apparent change was the increase in tongue tension with posterior displacement of the epiglottis. There was an increase in pre-phonation time during loud phonation. Patterns of muscle tension dysphonia with laryngeal squeezing, shortening of the vocal folds, and epiglottis tilting with increasing loudness are features of loud phonation. These observations show that flexible high-speed video laryngoscopy can reveal observations that cannot be observed with rigid video laryngoscopy. An objective analysis of the digital kymography signal can be conducted in selected cases.
The Influence on Realization and Perception of Lexical Tones from Affricate's Aspiration.

Abstract:Consonants in /CV/ syllables usually have potential influence on onset fundamental frequency (i.e., onset f0) of succeeding vowels. Previous studies showed such effect with respect to the aspiration of stops with evidence from Mandarin, a tonal language. While few studies investigated the effect on onset f0 from the aspiration of affricates. The differences between stops and affricates in aspiration leave space for further investigations. We examined the effect of affricate’s aspiration on the realization of onset f0 of following vowels in the form of isolated syllables and continuous speech by reference to a minimal pair of syllables which differ only in aspiration. Besides, we conducted tone identification tests using two sets of tone continua based on the same minimal pair of syllables. Experimental results showed that the aspirated syllables increased the onset f0 of following vowels compared with unaspirated counterparts in both kinds of contexts. While the magnitude of differences varied with tones. And the perception results showed that aspirated syllables tended to be perceived as tones that have relative lower onset f0, which in turn supported the production result. The present study may have applications for speech identification and speech synthesis.
The Dynamic Effect of the Valleculae on Singing Voice - An Exploratory Study Using 3D Printed Vocal Tracts

Abstract:Background and objectives: The valleculae can be seen as a pair of side branches of the human vocal tract like the piriform fossae. While the acoustic properties of the piriform fossae have been explored in detail, there is little evidence of full exploration of the acoustic properties of the valleculae. A recent investigation (Vampola, Horáček, & Švec, 2015), using a finite element model of a single vowel /a/, suggests that the valleculae created two antiresonances and two resonances in the high frequency region (above 4kHz) along with those produced by the piriform sinuses. In the current study, we investigate, in multiple vowels, the acoustic influences of the valleculae in singing voice, using 3-D printed vocal tracts. Method: MRI data were collected from an operatic tenor singing English vowels /a/, /u/, /i/. The images of each vowel were segmented and edited to create a pair of tracts, where one is the original and one had the valleculae digitally removed.The printed tracts were then placed atop a vocal tract organ loudspeaker, excited by white noise. Recordings were made with a microphone placed in front of the mouths of the tracts, to measure their frequency responses. Results: Dimensional changes were observed in valleculae of different vowels, with the long-term average spectra of the recordings illustrating clear differences between the frequency responses of the va-nova (valleculae - no valleculae) pairs, which varies with vowels. Conclusion: The experiment demonstrates the dynamic1 nature of the shapes of the valleculae in the human vocal tract and its acoustic consequences. It provides evidence that the valleculae have similar acoustic properties to the piriform fossae but with larger variations, and in some cases can influence acoustically the frequency region below 4kHz. The results suggest that large volume valleculae have the potential to impede to some extent the acoustic effect of the singers formant cluster and small valleculae may do the reverse. Since the volume of the valleculae is observed to be largely dependent on tongue movement and also with changes to the uttered vowel, it can be assumed that the high frequency energy, including that within the singer's formant region, could be vowel dependent. Strategies to control valleculae volumes are likely to be highly relevant to voice pedagogy practice as well as singing performance.
Effect of Akson Therapy on Acoustic Parameters in Patients with Functional Dysphonia

Abstract:Objective: Functional dysphonia can impair the language expression ability and adversely affect the career development of some patients. Therefore, an active exploration of effective treatment options is imperative. This study investigated the effect of Akson therapy on acoustic parameters in patients with functional dysphonia. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective analysis, 79 patients with functional dysphonia who received conventional voice correction training from June 2020 to June 2021 were included in the reference group (RG). Our hospital has implemented Akson therapy since July 2021. Correspondingly, 72 patients with functional dysphonia who underwent Akson therapy from July 2021 to July 2022 were enrolled in the observation group (OG). The acoustic parameters such as fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, and normalized noise energy (NNE); the aerodynamic parameters including maximum phonation time (MPT), mean airflow rate (MFR), and Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) score; and the Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain scale (GRBAS) score were measured before and after treatment and compared between the two groups. Results: The F0, jitter, shimmer, NNE, MPT, and MFR values as well as the VHI-10 score and the grade (G), roughness (R), and breathiness (B) scores on the GRBAS did not significantly differ between the two groups before treatment ( P > 0.05). However, significantly lower F0, jitter, shimmer, NNE, and MFR values and higher MPT levels were found in the OG compared to the RG after treatment ( P < 0.001). Furthermore, the VHI-10 score and the G, R, and B scores were significantly lower in the OG than in the RG after treatment ( P < 0.001), whereas the asthenia (A) and strain (S) scores remained at 0 before and after treatment. Conclusion: Akson therapy can improve the acoustic parameters of patients with functional dysphonia to a certain extent, indicating its potential application value.

Are We on the Wrong Track and so do MIS Curricula Need to be Reengineered?

Abstract:Extensive discussions and roundtables done by the panelists with tens of CIOs in recent years suggest that there is increased CIO concern about the depreciation in the perceived importance of MIS in the industry and a need therefore to adapt the curriculum of MIS and its place in the MBA program to what the industry needs. The panel will discuss this issue by first presenting the industry view of the issue based on CIO input and with it the need to reengineer the curriculum accordingly to tune it to what the industry, our clients, needs. The panel will then balance this perspective with a more cautious academic one. Practical steps academia can take will also be discussed.
Videostroboscopy Versus High-Speed Videoendoscopy: Factors Influencing Ratings of Laryngeal Oscillation

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether patient voice-related diagnosis, severity of dysphonia, and rater's experience influence the relationship between laryngeal oscillation ratings made from videostroboscopic and high-speed videoendoscopic (HSV) exams. Method: Stroboscopy and HSV exams from 15 patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) and 15 with benign vocal fold lesions were rated for laryngeal oscillation and closure by 10 licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Raters were divided into low- (< 5 years) and high-experience (> 5 years) groups. Ratings of vocal fold amplitude, mucosal wave, periodicity, phase symmetry, nonvibrating portion of the vocal fold, and glottal closure were examined using an online form adapted from the Voice Vibratory Assessment of Laryngeal Imaging (VALI). Results: Stroboscopy and HSV ratings were more strongly positively correlated for patients with benign vocal fold lesions (r between .43 and .75) than for those with ADSD (r between .40 and .68). Differences between stroboscopy and HSV exams were significantly greater for ratings of amplitude, mucosal wave, and periodicity in patients with ADSD than for patients with benign vocal fold lesions. Raters with < 5 years of experience showed significantly greater differences between stroboscopy and HSV ratings of amplitude and nonvibrating portion of the vocal fold for patients with ADSD only. Significantly greater differences between ratings of periodicity and phase symmetry were observed in patients with more severe dysphonia. Conclusions: Differences in laryngeal ratings made between HSV and stroboscopy exams may be influenced by patient diagnosis, severity of dysphonia, and rater experience. Future study is warranted to determine how the differences observed influence clinical diagnosis and outcomes.

Abstract:Summary Objectives This study aimed to estimate vocal loading in loud phonation of a vowel and two widely used semiocclusion voice exercises (SOVTEs). Impact stress ( IS ) was estimated from glottal closing speed, inertial forces from the second derivative of glottal opening and closing. Study design Experimental study in vivo . Methods A vocally healthy male sustained the [o:] vowel with habitual loudness and loudly: (1) without a tube, (2) into a silicone "Lax Vox" type tube (35 cm in length, 10 mm in diameter) outer end submerged 10 cm in water, and (3) into a straw (length 12.6 cm, diameter 2.5 mm) the outer end in air. He tried to use equal effort in all loud samples. High-speed video-laryngo-endoscopy was performed with a rigid scope. Oral air pressure (P oral ) was registered in a mouthpiece through which the endoscope was inserted into the larynx and to which the tubes were attached air-tightly. Results Compared with vowel phonation at habitual loudness , mean of maximal glottal width (max GW) increased by 44.1% for loud tube phonation and decreased by 1.8% for loud straw phonation, and mean absolute value of minimum GW time derivative d min increased by 57.1% for tube and by 29.5% for straw suggesting faster glottal closing. Compared with loud vowel phonation , max GW increased by 22.6% for loud tube phonation, while it decreased by 16.6% for loud straw phonation. For the tube, d min de creased by 7.6% and for the straw by 23.8%. Maximal acceleration (ACC) and deceleration (DC) values were larger for the tube and smaller for the straw than the values for both vowel phonations. Conclusions IS , deduced from d min , increased in loud SOVTEs compared to vowel phonation at a conversational loudness, but remained lower in loud SOVTEs than in loud vowel phonation, particularly with a narrow straw, which also reduced inertial forces, as suggested by the reduced ACC and DC.

Abstract:Purpose: The current study compared temporal and spectral acoustic contrast between vowel segments produced by speakers with dysarthria across three speech tasks—interactive, solo habitual, and solo clear. Method: Nine speakers with dysarthria secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis participated in the study. Each speaker was paired with a typical interlocutor over videoconferencing software. The speakers produced the vowels /i, ɪ, ɛ, æ/ in /h/−vowel−/d/ words. For the solo tasks, speakers read the stimuli aloud in both their habitual and clear speaking styles. For the interactive task, speakers produced a target stimulus for their interlocutor to select among the four possibilities. We measured the duration difference between long and short vowels, as well as the F1/F2 Euclidean distance between adjacent vowels, and also determined how well the vowels could be classified based on their acoustic characteristics. Results: Temporal contrast between long and short vowels was higher in the interactive task than in both solo tasks. Spectral distance between adjacent vowel pairs was also higher for some pairs in the interactive task than the habitual speech task. Finally, vowel classification accuracy was highest in the interactive task. Conclusions: Overall, we found evidence that individuals with dysarthria produced vowels with greater acoustic contrast in structured interactions than they did in solo tasks. Furthermore, the speech adjustments they made to the vowel segments differed from those observed in solo speech.

Formant and Voice Source Characteristics of Vowels in Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto. A Pilot Study

Abstract:Background: There have been numerous reports on the acoustic characteristics of singers' vowel articulation and phonation, and these studies cover many phonetic dimensions, such as fundamental frequency (F0), intensity, formant frequency, and voice quality. Method: Taking the three representative vowels (/a/, /i/, /u/) in Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto as the research object, the present study investigates the differences and associations in vowel articulation and phonation between Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto using acoustic measures, for example, F0, formant frequency, long-term average spectrum (LTAS). Results: The relationship between F0 and formant indicates that F1 is proportional to F0, in which the female has a significant variation in vowel /a/. Compared with the male, the formant structure of the female singing voice differs significantly from that of the speech voice. Regarding the relationship between intensity and formant, LTAS shows that the Chinese National Singing tenor and Bel Canto baritone have the singer's formant cluster when singing vowels, while the two sopranos do not. Conclusions: The systematic changes of formant frequencies with voice source are observed. (i) F1 of the female vowel /a/ has undergone a significant tuning change in the register transition, reflecting the characteristics of singing genres. (ii) Female singers utilize the intrinsic pitch of vowels when adopting the register transition strategy. This finding can be assumed to facilitate understanding the theory of intrinsic vowel pitch and revise Sundberg's hypothesis that F1 rises with F0. A non-linear relationship exists between F1 and F0, which adds to the non-linear interaction of the formant and vocal source. (iii) The singer's formant is affected by voice classification, gender, and singing genres.
Effect of Variations to a Simulated System of Straw Phonation Therapy on Aerodynamic Parameters Using Excised Canine Larynges.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:Resonance tubes are commonly used in voice therapy. These devices modify supraglottal impedance, potentially decreasing the aerodynamic power necessary for phonation. We modeled phonation with resonance tubes in excised larynges and evaluated the effects of varying tube width, tube length, and flow input on phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and phonation threshold flow (PTF). We hypothesized that the increased vocal economy observed in human subjects and several other models would be observed in excised larynges.STUDY DESIGN:Repeated measures excised canine larynx bench experiment with each larynx serving as own control.METHODS:Nine conditions were evaluated, namely control, two tube diameters (17.5 and 6.5mm), three tube lengths (7.8, 15.0, and 30.0cm), and three levels of flow input (80, 114, and 200mL/s). Aerodynamic data were collected for 11 excised canine larynges attached to an artificial vocal tract, and results from each experimental configuration were compared with control.RESULTS:A significant decrease in average PTP occurred compared with control for the 114- and 200-mL/s flow inputs, 30-cm extension, and 17.5- and 6.5-mm constrictions. Average PTF decreased compared with control for every configuration, although statistically significant changes were only observed for 200-mL/s flow and 6.5-mm constriction.CONCLUSIONS:Knowledge regarding the effect of vocal tract alterations could be clinically useful in determining the optimal "straw" configuration for voice therapy. Further exploration of the relationships among width, length, and flow input could provide theoretical support for the development of new therapies and resonance tube devices.
Establishment of Agrobacterium tumefaciens-Mediated Transformation of an Oleaginous Fungus, Mortierella alpina 1S-4, and Its Application for Eicosapentaenoic Acid Producer Breeding

Abstract:ABSTRACT Gene manipulation tools for an arachidonic-producing filamentous fungus, Mortierella alpina 1S-4, have not been sufficiently developed. In this study, Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation (ATMT) was investigated for M. alpina 1S-4 transformation, using the uracil-auxotrophic mutant (ura5− strain) of M. alpina 1S-4 as a host strain and the homologous ura5 gene as a selectable marker gene. Furthermore, the gene for ω3-desaturase, catalyzing the conversion of n-6 fatty acid to n-3 fatty acid, was overexpressed in M. alpina 1S-4 by employing the ATMT system. As a result, we revealed that the frequency of transformation surpassed 400 transformants/108 spores, most of the integrated T-DNA appeared as a single copy at a random position in chromosomal DNA, and most of the transformants (60 to 80%) showed mitotic stability. Moreover, the accumulation of n-3 fatty acid in transformants was observed under the conditions of optimal ω3-desaturase gene expression. In particular, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3), an end product of n-3 fatty acids synthesized in M. alpina 1S-4, reached a maximum of 40% of total fatty acids. In conclusion, the ATMT system was found to be effective and suitable for the industrial strain Mortierella alpina 1S-4 and will be a useful tool for basic mutagenesis research and for industrial breeding of this strain.
