Abstract:The ability to diagnose the integrity of the transformer windings and core through online diagnostic method would be useful for electric utilities who are concerned about the availability and reliability of power transformer. This paper presents results of a study to identify the condition of power transformer windings and core by measuring the vibration signal of outdoor transformer in normal operating conditions. The obtained vibration signal which is recorded from various places on the transformer tank is analyzed by matching the signal frequency spectrum with transformer load. From this study, mechanical integrity of windings and core inside the transformer is determined by comparing the correlation between each main frequency of vibration signal and the load among similar transformer.

Abstract:Introduction: The morphology of the vocal tract plays a crucial role in singing. Adjustments of the lower part of the vocal tract are essential for voice quality and timbre. Structured investigations of this region are challenging due to the small extent of the morphological modifications. Material and methods: This study analyzed the morphology of the endolaryngeal tube and parts of the surrounding hypopharynx for the sustained vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, //, and // by 11 female singer subjects who were at the beginning of their academic singing studies. As in a previous study with male subjects, analysis was based on two phonatory conditions: a natural, speech-like phonation and a singing phonation, like in classical singing. By means of 3D image processing from magnetic resonance imaging, multiple measures were derived. The data were statistically analyzed using linear mixed effects models and ANOVA. Results: The female singers enlarged the ratio of the endolaryngeal tube to the adjacent hypopharynx for singing. Discussion: In contrast to the findings of the male singers in a previous study, the ratios of the laryngeal volumes to the neighboring hypopharynx increased while singing. The female singer subjects of the present study increased those ratios, mediated by an over-proportional enlargement of the endolaryngeal tube. Existing acoustic differences to male singers are thus given a morphological basis. Conclusion: The study gives insight into the characteristic adjustments of the vocal tract of female classical singers. The resonatory strategies for females in classical singing differ from those found in males.

Abstract:Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) between the glottal airflow and the poroelastic tissue of the vocal folds (VFs) causes the VFs to vibrate, resulting in voice production. Prior experimental studies have reported that biological transport processes within the VF tissue play a crucial role in disease initiation and localized lesions. Particularly, it has been observed that physiological conditions during phonation influence the interstitial flow within the tissue and the associated oxygen partial pressure, which corresponds with dysfunctions such as intermittent hypoxia. The goal of this research is to develop a multiphysics computational methodology that investigates oxygen transport characteristics within the VFs. By considering transient glottal airflow and a biphasic description for the tissue, this coupled framework combines an FSI model with a mass transport model to quantify key features contributing to VF oxygenation. The Navier-Stokes equations represent the aerodynamics in the larynx, while linear elasticity for tissue dynamics is considered. Additionally, oxygen transport is simulated using the advection-diffusion-reaction equation, and the interstitial flow is solved via the Brinkman equation. Physiological parameters such as oxygen metabolic consumption, subglottal lung pressure, and tissue permeability coefficient are varied; and their contribution to oxygen supply as well as to the liquid dynamics within the VF are quantified. It is found that filtration velocity is directly proportional to subglottal pressure and tissue permeability. Oxygen flow is also found to be inversely related to reaction rate, directly related to permeability, and not noticeably affected by subglottal pressure. The findings provide insight into the VF oxygenation pathways and the potential link with some pathological states such as hypoxia and localized lesions.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the diagnostic role of nuclear expression of bcl-10 protein in extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type. METHODS One hundred and forty cases of MALT lymphoma were collected from Cancer Hospital of Fudan University (including 38 cases from stomach, 35 cases from ocular adnexa, 16 cases from intestine, 15 cases from skin, 15 cases from salivary gland, 14 cases from lung, 3 cases from thyroid and 4 cases from other sites). Ten cases of reactive follicular hyperplasia of tonsil, 5 cases of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of orbit and 143 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma other than MALT lymphoma (including 20 cases of NK/T cell lymphoma, 20 cases of follicular lymphomas, 20 cases of anaplastic large cell lymphomas, 20 cases of nodal diffuse large cell B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 10 cases of gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 13 cases of nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, 12 cases of mantle cell lymphoma, 11 cases of splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, 6 cases of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, 6 cases of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, 3 cases of small lymphocytic lymphoma, 1 case of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and 1 case of plasmacytoma were used as controls. Immunohistochemical study for bcl-10, as well as dual staining with CD20, was performed by EnVision method in paraffin sections. RESULTS In reactive follicular hyperplasia of tonsil, bcl-10 was moderately or strongly expressed in the cytoplasm of germinal center B cells, while the mantle cells were negative and the marginal zone cells and paracortical T cells showed weak staining. In the 5 cases of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of orbit, 2 were bcl-10-negative and the remaining 3 expressed bcl-10 in the cytoplasm of germinal center B cells. As for non-MALT lymphomas, 3 gastric DLBCL showed nuclear expression. The remaining cases showed variable cytoplasmic staining. In some cases of lymphoma, bcl-10 was expressed in tumor cells but not in reactive lymphoid cells. On the other hand, 92.1% (129/140) of MALT lymphoma were bcl-10 positive. Among those cases, 54.3% (76/140) showed cytoplasmic positivity and 37.9% (53/140) showed nuclear positivity. The nuclear positivity rate of bcl-10 in different anatomic sites was different. The staining was most intense in MALT lymphoma of ocular adnexa. Dual staining with CD20 showed that the bcl-10-positive cells were also CD20-positive, though the number of bcl-10-positive cells were less than that of CD20-positive cells. CONCLUSIONS Bcl-10 expression in lymphoid hyperplasia is a universal phenomenon. Cytoplasmic expression of bcl-10 is seen in many different kinds of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and reactive lymphoid conditions. In some cases of lymphoma, bcl-10 is expressed in tumor cells but not in reactive lymphoid cells, suggesting a possible role of abnormal bcl-10 expression in tumorgenesis. Nuclear expression of bcl-10 is seen mainly in MALT lymphoma, especially when occurring in ocular adnexa and lung. This is in contrast to loss of bcl-10 expression in residual germinal center cells.
Formant and Voice Source Characteristics of Vowels in Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto. A Pilot Study

Abstract:Background: There have been numerous reports on the acoustic characteristics of singers' vowel articulation and phonation, and these studies cover many phonetic dimensions, such as fundamental frequency (F0), intensity, formant frequency, and voice quality. Method: Taking the three representative vowels (/a/, /i/, /u/) in Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto as the research object, the present study investigates the differences and associations in vowel articulation and phonation between Chinese National Singing and Bel Canto using acoustic measures, for example, F0, formant frequency, long-term average spectrum (LTAS). Results: The relationship between F0 and formant indicates that F1 is proportional to F0, in which the female has a significant variation in vowel /a/. Compared with the male, the formant structure of the female singing voice differs significantly from that of the speech voice. Regarding the relationship between intensity and formant, LTAS shows that the Chinese National Singing tenor and Bel Canto baritone have the singer's formant cluster when singing vowels, while the two sopranos do not. Conclusions: The systematic changes of formant frequencies with voice source are observed. (i) F1 of the female vowel /a/ has undergone a significant tuning change in the register transition, reflecting the characteristics of singing genres. (ii) Female singers utilize the intrinsic pitch of vowels when adopting the register transition strategy. This finding can be assumed to facilitate understanding the theory of intrinsic vowel pitch and revise Sundberg's hypothesis that F1 rises with F0. A non-linear relationship exists between F1 and F0, which adds to the non-linear interaction of the formant and vocal source. (iii) The singer's formant is affected by voice classification, gender, and singing genres.
Amplitude Effects of Vocal Tract Resonance Adjustments When Singing Louder

Abstract:In the literature on vocal pedagogy we may find suggestions to increase the mouth opening when singing louder. It is known that sopranos tend to sing loud high notes with a wider mouth opening which raises the frequency of the first resonance of the vocal tract (fR1) to tune it close to the fundamental. Our experiment with classically trained male singers revealed that they also tended to raise the fR1 with the dynamics at pitches where the formant tuning does not seem relevant. The analysis by synthesis showed that such behaviour may contribute to the strengthening of the singer's formant by several dB-s and to a rise in the centre of spectral gravity. The contribution of the fR1 raising to the overall sound level was less consistent. Changing the extent of the mouth opening with the dynamics may create several simultaneous semantic cues that signal how prominent the produced sound is and how great the physical effort by the singer is. The diminishing of the mouth opening when singing piano may also have an importance as it helps singers to produce a quieter sound by increasing the distance between the fR1 and higher resonances, which lowers the transfer function of the vocal tract at the relevant spectral regions.

Abstract:Summary Objective To investigate how listeners use fundamental frequency, implied vocal tract length, and source spectral tilt to infer speaker gender. Methods Sound files each containing the vowels /i, æ, ɑ, u/ interspersed by brief silences were synthesized. Each of the 210 stimuli was a combination of 10 values for fundamental frequency and 7 values for implied vocal tract length (and the associated formant frequencies) ranging from male-typical to female-typical, and 3 values for source spectral tilt approximating the voice qualities of breathy, normal, and pressed. Twenty-three listeners judged each synthesized "speaker" as "female" or "male." Generalized linear mixed model analysis was used to determine the extent to which fundamental frequency, implied vocal track length, and spectral tilt influenced listener judgment. Results Increasing fundamental frequency and decreasing implied vocal tract length resulted in increased probability of female judgment. Two interactions were identified: An increase in fundamental frequency and also a decrease in source spectral tilt (more negative) resulted in a greater increase in the probability of female judgment when the vocal tract length was relatively short. Conclusions The relationships among fundamental frequency, implied vocal tract length, source spectral tilt, and probability of female judgment changed across the range of normal values, suggesting that the relative contributions of fundamental frequency and implied vocal tract length to gender perception varied over the ranges studied. There was no threshold of fundamental frequency or implied vocal tract length that dramatically shifted the perception between male and female.

Abstract:Introduction: The human voice is generated by the oscillation of the vocal folds induced by exhalation airflow. Consequently, the characteristics of these oscillations and the primary sound signal are controlled by the longitudinal tension of the vocal folds, the flow rate, and their prephonatoric position. To facilitate independent control of these parameters, a synthetic larynx model was developed, as detailed in a previous publication. Methods: This study aims to statistically analyze the influence of airflow and fiber tension on phonation characteristics, such as periodicity and symmetry, glottis closure during vocal fold oscillations, as well as tissue elasticity and generated sound. A total of 76 experiments were conducted and statistically analyzed with a systematic variation of flow rate and longitudinal tension within the vocal folds.During these experiments, vocal fold motion, subglottal pressure, and emitted sound were meticulously measured and analyzed. Results: Groupwise statistical testing identified the flow rate as the main influencing parameter on nearly all phonation characteristics. However, the fundamental frequency, stiffness parameters, and quality parameters of the primary sound signal are predominantly controlled by the longitudinal tension within the vocal folds. Discussion: The results demonstrated a complex interplay between the flow rate and tension, resulting in different characteristics of the produced sound signal.

The Dynamic Effect of the Valleculae on Singing Voice - An Exploratory Study Using 3D Printed Vocal Tracts

Abstract:Background and objectives: The valleculae can be seen as a pair of side branches of the human vocal tract like the piriform fossae. While the acoustic properties of the piriform fossae have been explored in detail, there is little evidence of full exploration of the acoustic properties of the valleculae. A recent investigation (Vampola, Horáček, & Švec, 2015), using a finite element model of a single vowel /a/, suggests that the valleculae created two antiresonances and two resonances in the high frequency region (above 4kHz) along with those produced by the piriform sinuses. In the current study, we investigate, in multiple vowels, the acoustic influences of the valleculae in singing voice, using 3-D printed vocal tracts. Method: MRI data were collected from an operatic tenor singing English vowels /a/, /u/, /i/. The images of each vowel were segmented and edited to create a pair of tracts, where one is the original and one had the valleculae digitally removed.The printed tracts were then placed atop a vocal tract organ loudspeaker, excited by white noise. Recordings were made with a microphone placed in front of the mouths of the tracts, to measure their frequency responses. Results: Dimensional changes were observed in valleculae of different vowels, with the long-term average spectra of the recordings illustrating clear differences between the frequency responses of the va-nova (valleculae - no valleculae) pairs, which varies with vowels. Conclusion: The experiment demonstrates the dynamic1 nature of the shapes of the valleculae in the human vocal tract and its acoustic consequences. It provides evidence that the valleculae have similar acoustic properties to the piriform fossae but with larger variations, and in some cases can influence acoustically the frequency region below 4kHz. The results suggest that large volume valleculae have the potential to impede to some extent the acoustic effect of the singers formant cluster and small valleculae may do the reverse. Since the volume of the valleculae is observed to be largely dependent on tongue movement and also with changes to the uttered vowel, it can be assumed that the high frequency energy, including that within the singer's formant region, could be vowel dependent. Strategies to control valleculae volumes are likely to be highly relevant to voice pedagogy practice as well as singing performance.
Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modeling of the Singer's Formant Cluster Optimization by Epilaryngeal Narrowing With and Without Velopharyngeal Opening

Abstract:This study aimed to find the optimal geometrical configuration of the vocal tract (VT) to increase the total acoustic energy output of human voice in the frequency interval 2-3.5 kHz "singer's formant cluster," (SFC) for vowels [a:] and [i:] considering epilaryngeal changes and the velopharyngeal opening (VPO). The study applied 3D volume models of the vocal and nasal tract based on computer tomography images of a female speaker. The epilaryngeal narrowing (EN) increased the total sound pressure level (SPL) and SPL of the SFC by diminishing the frequency difference between acoustic resonances F3 and F4 for [a:] and between F2 and F3 for [i:]. The effect reached its maximum at the low pharynx/epilarynx cross-sectional area ratio 11.4:1 for [a:] and 25:1 for [i:]. The acoustic results obtained with the model optimization are in good agreement with the results of an internationally recognized operatic alto singer. With the EN and the VPO, the VT input reactance was positive over the entire fo singing range (ca 75-1500 Hz). The VPO increased the strength of the SFC and diminished the SPL of F1 for both vowels, but with EN, the SPL decrease was compensated. The effect of EN is not linear and depends on the vowel. Both the EN and the VPO alone and together can support (singing) voice production.
An acoustical study of sound production in biphonic singing, Xöömij

Abstract:A theory that the high melody pitch of biphonic singing, Xöömij, is produced by the pipe resonance of the rear cavity in the vocal tract is proposed. The front cavity resonance is not critical to the production of the melody pitch. This theory is derived from acoustic investigations on several three-dimensional shapes of a Xöömij singer's vocal tract measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Four different shapes of the vocal tract are examined, with which the melody pitches of F6, G6, A6, and C7 are sung, along with the F3 drone of a specific pressed voice. The second formant frequency calculated from each tract shape is close to the melody pitch within an error of 36 cents. Sounds are synthesized by convolving a glottal source waveform provided by the Rosenberg model with transfer functions calculated from the vocal tract shapes. Two pitches are found to be successfully perceived when the synthesized sounds are listened to. In a frequency range below 2 kHz, their spectra have a strong resemblance to those of the sounds actually sung. The synthesized sounds, however, fail to replicate the harmonic clustering at 4-5 kHz observed in the actual sounds. This is speculated to originate from the glottal source specific to the "pressed" timbre of the drone.
Acoustic, aerodynamic, physiologic, and perceptual properties of modal and vocal fry registers

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to examine the acoustic, aerodynamic, physiologic, and perceptual characteristics of modal and vocal fry production. Twenty normal speakers (10 males, 10 females) participated in the study. Speech material included four sustained vowels (/i/, /a/, /ae/, /u/), and syllable strings of /pi/ repetitions produced in both modal and vocal fry registers. Acoustic data (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and signal-to-noise ratio), aerodynamic data (airflow and air pressure), and electroglottographic (EGG) data were obtained simultaneously. Results demonstrated considerable differences across voice parameters for the modal and vocal fry registers. Fundamental frequency was significantly lower in vocal fry than in modal register for both males and females, however, significant gender differences existed only in modal register. For both males and females, measurements of jitter and shimmer were significantly higher and signal to noise ratio was significantly lower in vocal fry. In addition, airflow rate in modal register was almost three times as high as the airflow rate in vocal fry register during sustained vowel production. During syllable string production, subglottal air pressure values in modal register were approximately 1.5 times higher than that in the vocal fry register. In general, these data emphasize that the aeromechanical mechanisms of vocal fold vibratory behavior are substantially different between modal and vocal fry registers. A model of vocal fry phonation is presented to account for the present results.
Limitations of Source-Filter Coupling In Phonation

Abstract:The coupling of vocal fold (source) and vocal tract (filter) is one of the most critical factors in source-filter articulation theory. The traditional linear source-filter theory has been challenged by current research which clearly shows the impact of acoustic loading on the dynamic behavior of the vocal fold vibration as well as the variations in the glottal flow pulses shape. This paper outlines the underlying mechanism of source-filter interactions; demonstrates the design and working principles of coupling for the various existing vocal cord and vocal tract biomechanical models. For our study, we have considered self-oscillating lumped-element models of the acoustic source and computational models of the vocal tract as articulators. To understand the limitations of source-filter interactions which are associated with each of those models, we compare them concerning their mechanical design, acoustic and physiological characteristics and aerodynamic simulation.

Abstract:The authors investigated the activity of a combination of DDP 80 mg/m2 i.v. followed by VP16 50 mg/m2 on days 2-5 in bronchogenic carcinoma. Twenty-seven patients entered the study (10 small cell carcinoma, 9 squamous cell, 2 adenocarcinomas and 6 histologically undefined). Six patients evidenced partial response (22.3%); one patient (small cell) had complete remission. The toxicity of the regimen was scarce and well-tolerated by patients with an incidence of 88.8% alopecia, and 77.7% nausea and/or vomiting.
Three registers in an untrained female singer analyzed by videokymography, strobolaryngoscopy and sound spectrography

Abstract:There has been a lack of objective data on the singing voice registers, particularly on the so called "whistle" register, occurring in the top part of the female pitch range, which is accessible only to some singers. This study offers unique strobolaryngoscopic and high-speed (7812.5 imagess) videokymographic data on the vocal fold behavior of an untrained female singer capable of producing three distinct voice qualities, i.e., the chest, head and whistle registers. The sound was documented spectrographically. The transition from chest to head register, accompanied by pitch jumps, occurred around tones B4-C#5 (500-550 Hz) and was found to be associated with a slight decrease in arytenoids adduction, resulting in decrease of the closed quotient. The register shifts from head to whistle, also accompanied by pitch jumps, occurred around tones E5-B5 (670-1000 Hz) without any noticeable changes in arytenoids adduction. Some evidence was found for the vocal tract influence on this transition. The mechanism of the vocal fold vibration in whistle register was found principally similar to that at lower registers: vibrations along the whole glottal length and vertical phase differences (indicated by sharp lateral peaks in videokymography) were seen on the vocal folds up to the highest tone G6 (1590 Hz).

Abstract:Introduction Speech is an integral component of human communication, requiring the coordinated efforts of various organs to produce sound (Titze & Alipour, 2006). The glottis region, a key player in voice production, assumes a crucial role in this intricate process. As air, emanating from the lungs in a confined space, interacts with the vocal folds (VFs) within the human body, it gives rise to the creation of voice (Alipour & Vigmostad, 2012). Understanding the mechanical intricacies of this process is very important. Studying VFs in vivo situations is hard work. However, the orientation, shape and size of VFs fibers have been extracted with synchrotron X-ray microtomography. (Bailly et al., 2018) The investigation of mechanical properties of both human and animal VFs has been carried out through various methodologies in the literature. The mechanical properties of VFs have been studied using the uniaxial extension test (Alipour & Vigmostad, 2012) assuming a linear behavior, while the nonlinearity and anisotropy of VFs has been determined using a multiscale method as in Miri et al. (2013). Pipette aspiration has also been used to extract in vivo elastic properties of VFs (Scheible et al., 2023). Mechanical behavior of VFs layers in tension, compression and shear has been studied. (Cochereau et al., 2020). Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations provide a valuable tool to gain a deeper understanding of voice production (Ghorbani et al. 2022). These simulations allow us to model the dynamic interplay between the VFs and air. Our research focuses on investigating the mechanical properties of canine vocal folds and utilizing these findings in an FSI simulation. Through this simulation, we aim to unravel how these mechanical properties affect voice <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://production.Methods" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> To investigate the mechanical properties of canine VFs, an in vitro study was conducted involving 6 mixedbreed dogs. The samples were harvested from canine cadavers euthanized for reasons unrelated to this study. In the following, the VFs were harvested and tested upon 3-4 hours post-animal sacrifice. Experimental trials were carried out using the STM-1 device (SANTAM Co.), equipped with a 100 kg load cell. Seven uniaxial tensile tests were done on each sample, with displacement rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 120 mm/min. The very slow rate of 1 mm/min was chosen to assess only elastic properties eliminating viscosity effects. Various hyperelastic models were used to fit the experimental data. Subsequently, for each model, both the mean and standard deviation (SD) were determined for the hyperelastic model parameters and their residuals. For FSI analysis we used a simplified laryngeal model as a hollow cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. The overall length of the larynx was set at 100 mm. The VFs were modeled as a circular disc with a small elliptical fissure in the midst of the cylinder section. Boundary conditions were established based on pressure differentials, with the inlet gauge pressure set at 1200 Pa and the relative pressure at the outlet set to 0. To account for the turbulent nature of airflow within the larynx, we employed the K-epsilon method to solve the motion differential equations in a two-way fluid-structure interaction simulation using ANSYS FLUENT 2021. This approach enabled us to investigate how the acquired mechanical properties of canine vocal folds affect the FSI simulations during phonation, resulting in a more comprehensive understanding of their impact. To determine the vibrational frequency of VFs, we calculated the time it took to reach maximum displacement and then quadrupled this value to obtain the period of vibration.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:Resonance tubes are commonly used in voice therapy. These devices modify supraglottal impedance, potentially decreasing the aerodynamic power necessary for phonation. We modeled phonation with resonance tubes in excised larynges and evaluated the effects of varying tube width, tube length, and flow input on phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and phonation threshold flow (PTF). We hypothesized that the increased vocal economy observed in human subjects and several other models would be observed in excised larynges.STUDY DESIGN:Repeated measures excised canine larynx bench experiment with each larynx serving as own control.METHODS:Nine conditions were evaluated, namely control, two tube diameters (17.5 and 6.5mm), three tube lengths (7.8, 15.0, and 30.0cm), and three levels of flow input (80, 114, and 200mL/s). Aerodynamic data were collected for 11 excised canine larynges attached to an artificial vocal tract, and results from each experimental configuration were compared with control.RESULTS:A significant decrease in average PTP occurred compared with control for the 114- and 200-mL/s flow inputs, 30-cm extension, and 17.5- and 6.5-mm constrictions. Average PTF decreased compared with control for every configuration, although statistically significant changes were only observed for 200-mL/s flow and 6.5-mm constriction.CONCLUSIONS:Knowledge regarding the effect of vocal tract alterations could be clinically useful in determining the optimal "straw" configuration for voice therapy. Further exploration of the relationships among width, length, and flow input could provide theoretical support for the development of new therapies and resonance tube devices.

Abstract:Fifteen professional singers sang simple vocal exercises at different pitches. The sung excerpts were recorded, and seven modified versions were created from each recording. The modifications were then played to the participant and (s)he had to assess the similarity of these stimuli to the perception of his/her own voice during the act of singing. Participants rated as most similar those stimuli which were modified by the filter whose frequency response most closely resembled a trapezoid, which was created by taking into account 1) the diffracting air conduction component from the mouth of the singer to his ear channel, 2) the bone conduction component, and also 3) the influence of the stapedius reflex on the sensitivity of his/her auditory system.
