Abstract:Amblyopia causes a contrast sensitivity deficit in the amblyopic eye. However there is also evidence of additional deficits affecting functions further along the processing stream, e.g. an impairment in global motion processing that is not specific to the amblyopic eye. Perceptual learning studies on normal observers have demonstrated significant improvements in global motion tasks. On this basis, we have applied these methods in an attempt to: i) improve global motion processing in amblyopic observers, and ii) determine whether the learning effects are specific to the trained eye. We tested 5 normals and 6 amblyopes on a motion direction discrimination task. Our stimuli were a field of isotropic log-Gabors with peak spatial frequency of 3 c/deg (spatially band-pass "dots"). In each trial we first presented a stimulus with a fixed reference motion direction, and then a test stimulus with its motion direction defined as an offset from that reference. The observer responded whether the second interval's direction was clockwise or anti-clockwise relative to the first. The difficulty of the task was varied by modifying the offset angle. We measured monocular baseline thresholds for each eye (day 1), and then conducted 10 days of monocular training for 40 minutes/day (days 2-11). Half of the amblyopes trained with their amblyopic eye, half with their fellow eye. After training we then made two retest measurements for each eye (days 12 and 13). Surprisingly, we do not find the expected training effect in either our normal or our amblyopic observers. Thresholds were generally lower following training, however this difference is not statistically significant. It is possible that the critical difference between our study and those that have found large training effects is the spatially broadband nature of the stimuli used in previous studies. Cortical Remapping Features of Numerosity Adaptation Aftereffects

Abstract:A key question in numerosity cognition is whether numerosity processing is based on quantity of items, rather than other low-level descriptions such as contrast or density. We can shed light on this question by investigating the cortical remapping features of numerosity adaptation across saccades, compared with those of low-level properties. As can be seen from previous studies, when the observer was sweeping across a stimulus, there was a spatiotopic representation of the stimulus, forming an isomorphic map in the visual cortex anchored in stable real-world coordinates. The remapping was based on transformation of retinotopic mapping of the neurons that occurred in the primary visual cortex. This transformation, however, was proposed to exist in high-level descriptions selectively by means of integrating visual properties with eye-movement information across saccades. Therefore, distinct mechanisms can be revealed if the remappings show different characteristics between numerosity and low-level properties such as contrast or density, which is helpful in supporting the statement that numerosity processing is relatively independent of primary visual cues. Object-based remapping was thought to be possible when stimuli moved without saccades. The mechanism underlying this kind of mapping is not yet clearly demonstrated. Specifically, if this remapping is due to object-file updating, then all visual properties could be remapped when objects move without saccades, despite the different processing levels of them. By contrast, if the object-based remapping is based on a similar mechanism to that with saccades, then a distinction would appear in remapping features of descriptions in different levels: only higher-level descriptions’ aftereffects could be remapped to final positions when objects moved. Therefore, exploring remapping features when objects are moving without saccades is an effective way to study the mechanism of object-based remapping without saccades. In our study, remapping characteristics of numerosity adaptation aftereffects were investigated systematically when relative motion occurred between the target and the observing eyes, compared with those of contrast adaptation aftereffects. Two experiments were included. In Experiment 1, subjects were asked to shift their fixations to a new position after adapting to the stimulus. The adaptation effects in the same and different retinae/screen positions were compared. The numerosity and contrast adaptation were tested respectively. As a result, numerosity adaptation effects showed spatiotopic remapping features to some extent, whereas the remapping of contrast adaptation aftereffects appeared to be purely retinotopic. According to the result, we proposed that numerosity was a higher-level description of stimuli, which can be integrated with eye-moving information and built up across saccades. In Experiment 2, with a stable fixation and moving adapting targets, we determined the numerosity and contrast adaptation aftereffects in the original and final positions of targets, respectively. The results suggested that numerical adaptation aftereffects can be remapped to the final position of targets. On the contrary, contrast adaptation aftereffects could not be remapped to the final position of moved targets, showing a completely retinotopic remapping feature. The distinct results in Experiment 2 underlined further differences in numerosity and contrast processing, as well as an identical mechanism in remapping features of relatively moving objects with and without saccades. In conclusion, cortical remapping of numerosity adaptation aftereffects was shown to be not constrained to the retinotopic level in our study. With saccades, it was shown to be spatiotopic;without saccades, the numerical aftereffects could also be remapped in the final position of moving objects. On the contrary, contrast showed completely retinotopic remapping features. These results provide new evidence to support the view that numerosity is processed at higher-level rather than being completely dependent on inferring of low-level visual cues. Moreover, we propose that the information of relative motion can be integrated with higher-level properties of stimuli no matter there are saccades or not.
Microsaccades as a long-term oculomotor correlate in visual perceptual learning

Abstract:Human perceptual learning, experience-induced gains in sensory discrimination, typically yields long-term performance improvements. Recent research revealed long-lasting transfer at the untrained location enabled by feature-based attention (FBA), reminiscent of its global effect (Hung & Carrasco, Scientific Reports, 11 (1), 13914, (2021)). Visual Perceptual Learning (VPL) is typically studied while observers maintain fixation, but the role of fixational eye movements is unknown. Microsaccades – the largest of fixational eye movements – provide a continuous, online, physiological measure from the oculomotor system that reveals dynamic processing, which is unavailable from behavioral measures alone. We investigated whether and how microsaccades change after training in an orientation discrimination task. For human observers trained with or without FBA, microsaccade rates were significantly reduced during the response window in both trained and untrained locations and orientations. Critically, consistent with long-term training benefits, this microsaccade-rate reduction persisted over a year. Furthermore, microsaccades were biased toward the target location prior to stimulus onset and were more suppressed for incorrect than correct trials after observers' responses. These findings reveal that fixational eye movements and VPL are tightly coupled and that learning-induced microsaccade changes are long lasting. Thus, microsaccades reflect functional dynamics of the oculomotor system during information encoding, maintenance and readout, and may serve as a reliable long-term physiological correlate in VPL.

Abstract:Adaptation of reactive saccades (RS), made toward the sudden appearance of stimuli in our environment, is a plastic mechanism thought to occur at the motor level of saccade generation. As saccadic oculomotor commands integrate multisensory information in the parietal cortex and superior colliculus, adaptation of RS should occur not only towards visual but also tactile targets. In addition, saccadic adaptation in one modality (vision or touch) should transfer cross-modally. To test these predictions, we used the double-step target paradigm to adapt rightward saccades made at two different eccentricities toward the participants' index and middle fingers, identified either visually (Experiment1) or tactually (Experiment2). In each experiment, the rate of adaptation induced for the adapted modality and the rate of adaptation transfer to the non-adapted modality were compared to that measured in a control (no adaptation) session. Results revealed that touch-triggered RS can be adapted as well as visually triggered ones. Moreover, the transfer pattern was asymmetric: visual saccadic adaptation transferred fully to tactile saccades, whereas tactile saccadic adaptation, despite full generalization to non-adapted fingers, transferred only partially to visual saccades. These findings disclose that in the case of tactile saccades, adaptation can be elicited in the absence of post-saccadic visual feedback. In addition, the asymmetric adaptation transfer across sensory modalities suggests that the adaptation locus for tactile saccades may occur in part upstream of the final motor pathway common to all saccades. These findings bring new insights both on the functional loci(us) and on the error signals of RS adaptation.

Abstract:Saccadic eye movements cause rapid and dramatic displacements of the retinal image of the visual world, yet our conscious perception of the world remains stable and continuous. A popular explanation for this remarkable ability of our visual system to compensate for the displacements is the predictive feature remapping theory. The theory proposes that, before saccades, the representation of a visual stimulus can be predictively transferred from neurons that initially encode the stimulus to neurons whose receptive fields will encompass the stimulus location after the saccade. Visual adaptation aftereffect experiments performed by Melcher (2007) provided psychophysical evidence for this theory. However, it was argued that the visual aftereffects were not measured at the "appropriate" remapped location (Rolfs, Jonikaitis, Deubel, & Cavanagh, 2011). Therefore, whether the remapped representation contains feature information (e. g., orientation, motion direction, or contrast) is still a subject of intense debate. Here, to explore the nature of the predictive transfer during trans-saccadic perception, we measured visual aftereffects (tilt aftereffect, motion aftereffect, and threshold elevation aftereffect) at the appropriate remapped location of adapting stimuli before saccades. We observed a significant tilt aftereffect and motion aftereffect, but little threshold elevation aftereffect. Furthermore, the tilt aftereffect and motion aftereffect exhibited spatial specificity. These findings provide strong evidence for the predictive feature remapping theory and suggest that intermediate visual processing stages (i.e., extrastriate visual cortex) might be critical for feature remapping. Finally, we propose that the feature remapping process might also contribute to the spatiotopic representation of visual features.
Transsaccadic integration of visual information is predictive, attention-based, and spatially precise

Abstract:Eye movements produce shifts in the positions of objects in the retinal image, but observers are able to integrate these shifting retinal images into a coherent representation of visual space. This ability is thought to be mediated by attention-dependent saccade-related neural activity that is used by the visual system to anticipate the retinal consequences of impending eye movements. Previous investigations of the perceptual consequences of this predictive activity typically infer attentional allocation using indirect measures such as accuracy or reaction time. Here, we investigated the perceptual consequences of saccades using an objective measure of attentional allocation, reverse correlation. Human observers executed a saccade while monitoring a flickering target object flanked by flickering distractors and reported whether the average luminance of the target was lighter or darker than the background. Successful task performance required subjects to integrate visual information across the saccade. A reverse correlation analysis yielded a spatiotemporal "psychophysical kernel" characterizing how different parts of the stimulus contributed to the luminance decision throughout each trial. Just before the saccade, observers integrated luminance information from a distractor located at the post-saccadic retinal position of the target, indicating a predictive perceptual updating of the target. Observers did not integrate information from distractors placed in alternative locations, even when they were nearer to the target object. We also observed simultaneous predictive perceptual updating for two spatially distinct targets. These findings suggest both that shifting neural representations mediate the coherent representation of visual space, and that these shifts have significant consequences for transsaccadic perception.
Temporal recalibration in response to delayed visual feedback of active versus passive actions: an fMRI study

Abstract:The brain can adapt its expectations about the relative timing of actions and their sensory outcomes in a process known as temporal recalibration. This might occur as the recalibration of timing between the sensory (e.g. visual) outcome and (1) the motor act (sensorimotor) or (2) tactile/proprioceptive information (inter-sensory). This fMRI recalibration study investigated sensorimotor contributions to temporal recalibration by comparing active and passive conditions. Subjects were repeatedly exposed to delayed (150 ms) or undelayed visual stimuli, triggered by active or passive button presses. Recalibration effects were tested in delay detection tasks, including visual and auditory outcomes. We showed that both modalities were affected by visual recalibration. However, an active advantage was observed only in visual conditions. Recalibration was generally associated with the left cerebellum (lobules IV, V and vermis) while action related activation (active > passive) occurred in the right middle/superior frontal gyri during adaptation and test phases. Recalibration transfer from vision to audition was related to action specific activations in the cingulate cortex, the angular gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus. Our data provide new insights in sensorimotor contributions to temporal recalibration via the middle/superior frontal gyri and inter-sensory contributions mediated by the cerebellum.

Comparison of adaptation characteristics between visually- and memory-guided saccades

Abstract:Saccade adaptation plays a crucial role in maintaining saccade accuracy. The behavioral characteristics and neural mechanisms of saccade adaptation for an externally cued movement, such as visually-guided saccades (VGS), are well studied in non-human primates. In contrast, little is known about the saccade adaptation of an internally driven movement, such as memory-guided saccades (MGS), which are guided by visuospatial working memory. As the oculomotor plant changes due to growth, aging, or skeletomuscular problems, both types of saccades need to be adapted. Do both saccade types engage a common adaptation mechanism? In this study, we compared the characteristics of amplitude decrease adaptation in MGS with VGS in non-human primates. We found that the adaptation speed was faster for MGS than for VGS. Saccade duration changed during MGS adaptation, while saccade peak velocity changed during VGS adaptation. We also compared the adaptation field, that is, the gain change for saccade amplitudes other than the adapted. The gain change for MGS declines on both smaller and larger sides of adapted amplitude, more rapidly for larger than smaller amplitudes, while the decline in VGS was reversed. Thus, the differences between VGS and MGS adaptation characteristics support the previously suggested hypothesis that the adaptation mechanisms of VGS and MGS are distinct. Furthermore, the result suggests that the MGS adaptation site is a brain structure that influences saccade duration, while the VGS adaptation site influences saccade peak velocity. These results should be beneficial for future neurophysiological experiments.

Abstract:Virtually all stages of the visual system exhibit adaptation: neurons adjust their responses based on the recent stimulus history. While some of these adjustments occur at specific stages, others may be inherited from earlier stages. How do adaptation effects cascade along the visual system? We measured spatially selective adaptation at two successive stages in the mouse visual system: visual thalamus (LGN) and primary visual cortex (V1). This form of adaptation affected both stages but in drastically different ways: in LGN it only changed response gain, while in V1 it also shifted spatial tuning away from the adaptor. These effects, however, are reconciled by a simple model whereby V1 neurons summate LGN inputs with a fixed, unadaptable weighting profile. These results indicate that adaptation effects cascade through the visual system, that this cascading can shape selectivity, and that the rules of integration from one stage to the next are not themselves adaptable.
Feature remapping precedes saccadic eye movements without attention

Abstract:Saccadic eye movements, which typically occur two to three times every second, dramatically change the images on the retina; however, conscious perception is stable and continuous. One possible explanation for visual stability is the predictive remapping mechanism. Although previous works have found evidence for predictive remapping of attention pointers and attended features, no study has examined the existence of the predictive remapping of unattended features before a saccade. This would be helpful to discriminate two remapping mechanisms: activation transfer (attention is necessary) and shifting receptive fields (attention is not necessary). In this study, we used the psychophysical adaptation technique to measure aftereffects, including the tilt aftereffect (TAE), the motion aftereffect (MAE) and the threshold elevation aftereffect (TEAE) at the remapped location of an adapting stimulus before a saccade. Subjects first adapted to a peripherally presented stimulus. After a saccadic cue, subjects needed to execute an eye movement to a saccadic target and perform a visual task at the remapped location of the adaptor for measuring the aftereffects just before the saccade. Because the adaptor disappeared before the occurrence of the saccade cue, there was no attention to the adapted feature immediately before and during the saccade. We found a significant TAE and MAE at the remapped location, but no TEAE. These findings imply that extrastriate areas (but not the striate area) could remap visual features, even without attention. Furthermore, we found that the TAE magnitude increased with the interval between the onset of the saccadic target and the onset of the saccadic cue. This finding suggests that the aftereffect at the remapped location develop slowly before the saccade. Perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization strength depends on the visual appearance of saccade targets

Abstract:We normally perceive a stable visual environment despite repetitive eye movements. To achieve such stability, visual processing integrates information across saccades, and laboratory hallmarks of such integration are robustly observed by presenting brief perimovement visual probes. In one classic phenomenon, perceived probe locations are grossly erroneous. This phenomenon is believed to depend, at least in part, on corollary discharge associated with saccade-related neuronal movement commands. However, we recently found that superior colliculus motor bursts, a known source of corollary discharge, can be different for different image appearances of the saccade target. Therefore, here we investigated whether perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization also depends on saccade-target appearance. We asked human participants to generate saccades to either low (0.5 cycles/deg) or high (5 cycles/deg) spatial frequency gratings. We always placed a high contrast target spot at grating center, to ensure matched saccades across image types. We presented brief perisaccadic probes, which were high in contrast to avoid saccadic suppression, and the subjects pointed (via mouse cursor) at their perceived locations. We observed stronger perisaccadic mislocalization for low spatial frequency saccade targets, and for upper visual field probe locations. This was despite matched saccade metrics and kinematics across conditions, and it was also despite matched probe visibility for the different saccade target images (low versus high spatial frequency gratings). To the extent that perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization depends on corollary discharge, our results suggest that such discharge might relay more than just spatial saccade vectors to the visual system; saccade-target visual features can also be transmitted.

Abstract:In ether–anesthetized, ovariectomized 200–250–g rats treated for 3 days with estrogen, progesterone and thyroxine (OEPT rat), significant elevations in radioimmunoassayable LH occurred after 5 ml of blood were removed in divided amounts over a 30–min period. Significant elevations of LH also occurred 5 min after 4 ml of blood were removed acutely from OEPT rats and from normal diestrus female rats but not after identical blood loss from untreated ovariectomized rats whose LH levels were already high. Volume replacement with bovine serum albumin significantly reduced the effects of hemorrhage on LH levels. Altered peripheral metabolism of LH or peripheral release and recirculation of previously secreted LH could not account for these LH increases because the disappearance of injected 125Ilabeled rat LH from the plasma of OEPT rats was not altered by blood volume depletion. Different patterns of interleukin-1alpha and interleukin-1beta expression in organs of normal young and old mice.

Abstract:The different physiological roles of interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) are not well understood, especially when considering the apparent overlap and redundancy of the two IL-1 molecules. Characterization of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta expression was performed in this study in organs from young and old mice, using immunohistochemistry and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). The results indicate that organ IL-1alpha and IL-1beta display different patterns of expression: IL-1alpha is manifested more prominently in lymphoreticular organs (lungs, small intestine, spleen, liver), while IL-1beta is more evident in highly specialized and more vulnerable organs, which do not play a leading role in defense against infections and intoxication (heart, brain, skeletal muscle, kidney). This differential expression is more accentuated in old mice, possibly pointing to the special relevance of these cytokines to organ homeostasis in old age. These findings may shed new light on the physiological functions of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta, and may also lead to the development of improved therapeutic approaches, based on the specific manipulation of these cytokines.
Taking aim at the perceptual side of motor learning: Exploring how explicit and implicit learning encode perceptual error information through depth vision

Abstract:Abstract Motor learning in visuomotor adaptation tasks results from both explicit and implicit processes, each responding differently to an error signal. While the motor output side of these processes is extensively studied, their visual input side is relatively unknown. We investigated if and how depth perception affects the computation of error information by explicit and implicit motor learning. Two groups of participants threw virtual darts at a virtual dartboard while receiving perturbed endpoint feedback. The Delayed group was allowed to re-aim and their feedback was delayed to emphasize explicit learning, while the Clamped group received clamped cursor feedback which they were told to ignore, and continued to aim straight at the target to emphasize implicit adaptation. Both groups played this game in a highly detailed virtual environment (Depth condition) and in an empty environment (No-Depth condition). The Delayed group showed an increase in error sensitivity under Depth relative to No-Depth conditions. In contrast, the Clamped group adapted to the same degree under both conditions. The movement kinematics of the Delayed participants also changed under the Depth condition, consistent with the target appearing more distant, unlike the Clamped group. A comparison of the Delayed behavioral data with a perceptual task from the same individuals showed that the effect of the Depth condition on the re-aiming direction was consistent with an increase in the scaling of the error distance and size. These findings suggest that explicit and implicit learning processes may rely on different sources of perceptual information. New & Noteworthy We leveraged a classic sensorimotor adaptation task to perform a first systematic assessment of the role of perceptual cues in the estimation of an error signal in the 3D space during motor learning. We crossed two conditions presenting different amounts of depth information, with two manipulations emphasizing explicit and implicit learning processes. Explicit learning responded to the visual conditions, consistent with perceptual reports, while implicit learning appeared to be independent of them.

Abstract:Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were developed for amnesic, neurotoxic, and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (ASP, NSP, and DSP) toxins and for yessotoxin. These assays, along with a commercially available paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) ELISA, were used to test the feasibility of an ELISA-based screening system. It was concluded that such a system to identify suspect shellfish samples, for subsequent analysis by methods approved by international regulatory authorities, is feasible. The assays had sufficient sensitivity and can be used on simple shellfish extracts. Alcohol extraction gave good recovery of all toxin groups. The ease of ELISAs permits the ready expansion of the system to screen for other toxins, as new ELISAs become available.

Abstract:To maintain stable and coherent perception in an ever-changing environment, the brain needs to continuously and dynamically calibrate information from multiple sensory sources, using sensory and non-sensory information in a flexible manner. Here, we review how the vestibular and visual signals are recalibrated during self-motion perception. We illustrate two different types of recalibration: one long-term cross-modal (visual–vestibular) recalibration concerning how multisensory cues recalibrate over time in response to a constant cue discrepancy, and one rapid-term cross-modal (visual–vestibular) recalibration concerning how recent prior stimuli and choices differentially affect subsequent self-motion decisions. In addition, we highlight the neural substrates of long-term visual–vestibular recalibration, with profound differences observed in neuronal recalibration across multisensory cortical areas. We suggest that multisensory recalibration is a complex process in the brain, is modulated by many factors, and requires the coordination of many distinct cortical areas. We hope this review will shed some light on research into the neural circuits of visual–vestibular recalibration and help develop a more generalized theory for cross-modal plasticity.

Abstract:Our eyes move constantly at a frequency of 3-5 times per second. These movements, called saccades, induce the sweeping of visual images on the retina, yet we perceive the world as stable. It has been suggested that the brain achieves this visual stability via predictive remapping of neuronal receptive field (RF). A recent experimental study disclosed details of this remapping process in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), that is, about the time of the saccade, the neuronal RF expands along the saccadic trajectory temporally, covering the current RF (CRF), the future RF (FRF), and the region the eye will sweep through during the saccade. A cortical wave (CW) model was also proposed, which attributes the RF remapping as a consequence of neural activity propagating in the cortex, triggered jointly by a visual stimulus and the corollary discharge (CD) signal responsible for the saccade. In this study, we investigate how this CW model is learned naturally from visual experiences at the development of the brain. We build a two-layer network, with one layer consisting of LIP neurons and the other superior colliculus (SC) neurons. Initially, neuronal connections are random and non-selective. A saccade will cause a static visual image to sweep through the retina passively, creating the effect of the visual stimulus moving in the opposite direction of the saccade. According to the spiking-time-dependent-plasticity rule, the connection path in the opposite direction of the saccade between LIP neurons and the connection path from SC to LIP are enhanced. Over many such visual experiences, the CW model is developed, which generates the peri-saccadic RF remapping in LIP as observed in the experiment.

Abstract:When viewing a scene or searching for a target, an observer usually makes a series of saccades that quickly shift the orientation of the eyes. The present study explored how one saccade affects subsequent saccades within a dynamic neural field model of the superior colliculus (SC). The SC contains an oculocentric motor map that encodes the vector of saccades and remaps to the new fixation location after each saccade. Our simulations demonstrated that the observation that saccades which reverse their vectors are slower to initiate than those which repeat vectors can be explained by the afore-mentioned remapping process and the internal dynamics of the SC. How this finding connects to the study of inhibition of return is discussed and suggestions for future studies are presented.

Abstract:Highlights • Sensorimotor adaptation in response to perturbed visual and auditory stimuli. • Evidence of implicit audiomotor aftereffects following adapted reaching. • Auditory aftereffects observed with both loudspeaker and headphones presentation. • Adaptation may attenuate with rapid targets and non-veridical baseline feedback. Sensorimotor adaptation alters mappings between motor commands and their predicted outcomes. Such remapping has been extensively studied in the visual domain, but the degree to which it occurs in modalities other than vision remains less well understood. Here, we manipulated the modality of reach target presentation to compare sensorimotor adaptation in response to perturbations of visual and auditory feedback location. We compared the extent of adaptation to perturbed sensory feedback for visual and auditory sensory modalities, and the magnitude of reach-direction aftereffects when the perturbation was removed. To isolate the contribution of implicit sensorimotor recalibration to adaptation in reach direction, we held sensory prediction errors and task-performance errors constant via a task-irrelevant clamp of sensory feedback. Seventy-two participants performed one of three experiments in which target location information and endpoint reach direction feedback were presented by loudspeakers (n = 24), headphones (n = 24), or a visual display (n = 24). Presentation durations for target stimuli (500 ms) and (non-veridical) endpoint feedback of reach direction (100 ms) were matched for visual and auditory modalities. For all three groups, when endpoint feedback was perturbed, adaptation was evident: reach-directions increased significantly in the direction opposite the clamped feedback, and a significant aftereffect persisted after participants were instructed that the perturbation had been removed. This study provides new evidence that implicit sensorimotor adaptation occurs in response to perturbed auditory feedback of reach direction, suggesting that an implicit neural process to recalibrate sensory to motor maps in response to sensory prediction errors may be ubiquitous across sensory modalities.

Abstract:The ability to accurately perceive and track moving objects is crucial for many everyday activities. In this study, we use a "double-drift stimulus" to explore the processing of visual motion signals that underlie perception, pursuit, and saccade responses to a moving object. Participants were presented with peripheral moving apertures filled with noise that either drifted orthogonally to the aperture's direction or had no net motion. Participants were asked to saccade to and track these targets with their gaze as soon as they appeared and then to report their direction. In the trials with internal motion, the target disappeared at saccade onset so that the first 100 ms of the postsaccadic pursuit response was driven uniquely by peripheral information gathered before saccade onset. This provided independent measures of perceptual, pursuit, and saccadic responses to the double-drift stimulus on a trial-by-trial basis. Our analysis revealed systematic differences between saccadic responses, on one hand, and perceptual and pursuit responses, on the other. These differences are unlikely to be caused by differences in the processing of motion signals because both saccades and pursuits seem to rely on shared target position and velocity information. We conclude that our results are instead due to a difference in how the processing mechanisms underlying perception, pursuit, and saccades combine motor signals with target position. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying dissociation in visual processing between perception and eye movements.
