Development of RF system for RAON superconducting linear accelerator

Abstract:The rare isotope accelerator complex for on-line experiments (RAON), a basic science research facility centered around a heavy-ion accelerator, features superconducting radio-frequency cavities including 81.25 MHz quarter-wave resonators, 162.5 MHz half-wave resonators, and 325 MHz single-spoke resonators. The RF system, including low-level RF control systems, solid-state power amplifiers, and an RF reference distribution system, was operational during the commissioning test. The RF stability requirements include ± 1% in amplitude and ± 1° in phase. A low-level RF control system for superconducting cavities has been developed and incorporates digital self-excited loop and RF direct detection, which were implemented and tested. In the injector section, a 150-kW power amplifier for a radio-frequency quadrupole and four power amplifiers for rebunchers, which are normal conducting cavities, were installed. The required RF power for each superconducting cavity is 4 kW, with a total of 124 power amplifiers. In addition, an RF reference system delivering a stable phase reference signal of 81.25 MHz to low-level RF systems and beam position monitors has been developed and is operating. The RF reference line consists of 1–5/8′′ rigid coaxial lines and is temperature-controlled with heating tape. In this paper, we present the RAON RF system's design and its commissioning results.
