Abstract:Abstract After hydraulic fracturing treatment, a reduction in permeability caused by the invasion of fracturing fluids is an inevitable problem, which is called water blocking damage. Therefore, it is important to mitigate and eliminate water blocking damage to improve the flow capacities of formation fluids and flowback rates of the fracturing fluid. However, the steady-state core flow method cannot quickly and accurately evaluate the effects of chemical agents in enhancing the fluid flow capacities in tight reservoirs. This paper introduces a time-saving and accurate method, pressure transmission test (PTT), which can quickly and quantitatively evaluate the liquid flow capacities and gas-drive flowback rates of a new nanoemulsion. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the damage mechanism of different fluids and the adsorption of chemical agents on the rock surface. Parallel core flow experiments were used to evaluate the effects of the nanoemulsion on enhancing flowback rates in heterogeneous tight reservoirs. Experimental results show that the water blocking damage mechanisms differ in matrices and fractures. The main channels for gas channeling are fractures in cracked cores and pores in non-cracked cores. Cracked cores suffer less damage from water blocking than non-cracked cores, but have a lower potential to reduce water saturation. The PTT and SEM results show that the permeability reduction in tight sandstones caused by invasion of external fluids can be list as guar gum fracturing fluid > slickwater > brine. Parallel core flow experiments show that for low-permeability heterogenous sandstone reservoirs with a certain permeability ratio, the nanoemulsion can not only reduce reverse gas channeling degree, but also increase the flowback rate of the fracturing fluid. The nanoemulsion system provides a new solution to mitigate and eliminate water blocking damage caused by fracturing fluids in tight sandstone gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing and water/nanoemulsion flooding technology are effective stimulation measures for tight oil production. The complex pore structure of ultra-low permeability sandstone greatly affects oil recovery. At present, scholars have done a lot of research on the characteristics of oil-water flow in micro-nano pores of ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoirs. However, few scholars have comprehensively studied the whole process of ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoirs from hydraulic fracturing to enhanced oil recovery. In this paper, the whole process from fracturing to production of ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoirs is comprehensively studied at the laboratory scale by combining triaxial fracturing, CT scanning, online LF-NMR and other technologies, aiming to promote the understanding of tight oil development. The results show that the high confining pressure (45 MPa) inhibits the propagation of fractures in the rock samples more than the low confining pressure (15 MPa) during the triaxial fracturing process. The oil recovery of the rock sample with high fracture volume (1213.42 mm 3 ) is 16.32 % higher than that of the rock sample with low fracture volume (674.22 mm 3 ). Whether it is fractured rock or non-fractured rock, nanoemulsion can further improve the oil recovery of micropores on the basis of water flooding, with a maximum increase of 28.21 %. The oil recovery of the nanoemulsion with a concentration of 0.3 wt% was 25.34 % higher than that of the nanoemulsion with a concentration of 0.05 wt%. Confining pressure conditions have an important impact on oil recovery. The oil recovery of non-fractured rock samples with initial confining pressure of 5 MPa is 8.15 % lower than that of non-fractured rock samples with initial confining pressure of 30 MPa. At the same time, we propose a new T 1 -T 2 map region division scheme based on sandstone to better characterize oil displacement behavior at the pore scale. The research results can guide the exploitation of ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoirs.

Influence of Nanoemulsion Droplet Size of Removing Water Blocking Damage in Tight Gas Reservoir

Abstract:During the production process, water phase incursion into the reservoir causes water blocking damage and seriously affects the production of tight gas reservoirs. Recently, nanoemulsions have been used as highly effective water blocking removing agents in the field, but their mechanism is still unclear. In this research, a series of nanoemulsions with different droplet sizes were synthesized, and their water blocking removing performance was intensively investigated. To begin, the relationship between the droplet size and the chemical composition of the nanoemulsion was determined by dynamic light scattering. Second, the influence of the nanoemulsion droplet size on the surface tension and the contact angle experiments was studied. Finally, NMR and permeability recovery experiments were used to study the relationship between the droplet size and the water locking removing effect of the nanoemulsions. Simultaneously, the surfactant release process was investigated using the static adsorption curves of the nanoemulsions. The experimental results show that the droplet size of nanoemulsion has an exponential relationship with the oil phase content. The surface tension decreases with the increase in droplet size, but the wetting reversal effect decreases with the increase in droplet size. The nanoemulsion with an oil phase content of 5 wt.% has the best water locking removing effect, and the permeability recovery value of the core reaches 59.54%. The adsorption control of the nanoemulsion on the surfactant is the key to its water blocking removing ability. This comprehensive study shows that the nanoemulsion with an oil phase content of 5 wt.% has optimum adsorption control capability. Thus, it can be used as a promising candidate for removing water blocking in tight gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing has become an essential stimulation treatment for improving the development efficiency of low-permeability oil reservoirs. However, fracturing fluid inevitably causes reservoir damage. This study proposed a combined method of microscopic and macroscopic experiments to investigate the nature of formation damage of fracturing fluid by quantifying its influence on porosity, permeability, and pore structure. Nuclear magnetic resonance technology combined with core flooding test and parallel sample comparison method was applied to quantitatively evaluate the damage degree and identify the main damage types of hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) fracturing fluid and slickwater fracturing fluid. The microscopic damage mechanisms of these fracturing fluids were analyzed by thin section petrography, X-ray diffraction, rate-controlled mercury intrusion, scanning electron microscopy, and wettability tests. The results show that the total permeability damage degree of HPG fracturing fluid filtrate is 30.43%, of which water sensitivity, water lock, and macromolecule adsorption account for 6.06%, 23.26%, and 1.11%, respectively. Water lock is the major damage factor. Regarding the damage of slickwater fracturing fluid filtrate, water sensitivity causes the severest damage, corresponding to 39.08% of core permeability loss, whereas macromolecule adsorption and water lock contribute 13.21% and 0.97%, respectively. Water sensitivity damage causes reduced porosity, decreased permeability, and narrower pores, resulting from hydration, swelling, dispersion and migration of clay minerals. Water lock damage increases the movable pore volume, decreases the permeability, increases the pore radius, decreases the throat radius, and increases the pore throat ratio, which increases the flow resistance to the oil phase. The magnitude of water lock damage is closely related to the surfactant content and performance, rock wettability, and pore throat radius ratio. Macromolecule adsorption damage leads to a decrease in permeability, a reduction in the number of large pores, an increase in the number of small throats, and an increase in the pore throat radius ratio due to the absorption and retention of macromolecules on the surfaces of the pores and throats. Increasing the flowback volume of slickwater fracturing fluid can recover part of the macromolecule absorption damage. This research can provide a reliable reference for the optimization of fracturing fluid performance, enhancement of the fracturing effect and reservoir protection of low-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:The water-blocking effect is a serious problem when developing tight sandstone gas reservoirs, which can cause a sharp reduction in gas production. Wettability alteration of near-wellbore sand rock surface from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity is an effective method to decrease capillary pressure. In this study, a superhydrophobic fluorinated nano-emulsion was synthesized via a soap-free emulsion polymerization process using methacryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, trifluoctyl methacrylate, and styrene as monomers. The effect of the fluorinated monomer concentration on wettability alteration was evaluated by measuring the contact angle of the formation water droplet on the modified glass slides using nano-emulsions with different fluorinated monomer concentrations. The results showed that the nano-emulsion had a good dispersibility and homogeneous particle size of around 90 nm, and with the increase in fluorinated monomer concentration, the contact angle increased. The contact angle was the largest when the fluorinated monomer mass rate concentration reached 50%. The adsorption of nanoparticles could alter the rock wettability from a super hydrophilic state (θ = 7°) to a superhydrophobic state (θ = 150°). The spontaneous imbibition experiments showed that the formation water adsorption quality of the core decreased by 49.7% after being modified by the nano-emulsion. The nano-emulsion showed a good superhydrophobicity and had the potential to be used to reduce the water-blocking damage in the tight gas reservoirs.

Comprehensive analysis of influencing factors and mechanism of nano emulsion spontaneous imbibition oil displacement in tight sandstone reservoir

Abstract:Tight sandstone reservoir has the characteristics of low porosity, low permeability and strong reservoir heterogeneity, which leads to a rapid decline in single well production after hydraulic fracturing. Adding nano emulsion to fracturing fluid can not only realize the dual function of fracturing and imbibition oil displacement, but also effectively prolong the stable production time of oil wells. In order to improve the understanding of the interaction between nano emulsion and reservoir, this paper based on the basic physical property test and analysis of nano emulsion, macroscopic and microscopic spontaneous imbibition oil displacement experiments, the mechanism of imbibition displacement of nano emulsion in tight sandstone reservoirs and the influence of related factors is clarified. The results show that: 1The particle size of the three types of nano emulsions ranges from 11 to 16 nm, and they can enter the nanopore throats deep in the reservoir, and can achieve good injectivity in tight reservoirs. The anionic AES nano emulsion is superior to cationic ADT and nonionic AEO-9 nano emulsion in terms of injectability, oil-water interfacial tension and wetting modification effect in tight sandstone cores, and the optimal concentration is 0.30 wt%. 2Spontaneous imbibition oil displacement experiments show that the nano emulsion concentration is not the higher the better. Since the nano emulsion adsorption on the solid surface reaches a dynamic equilibrium, the excessive nano emulsion cannot further change the wettability of the solid surface, and the lower oil-water interfacial tension has the opposite effect on the imbibition displacement. 3The migration and gathering of emulsified oil droplets in solution mainly included five processes: Saturated oil core/Nano-surfactant fluid emulsion reaction, Aqueous/Emulsified oil droplets, Emulsified oil droplet gathering phase, Demulsifying and emulsifying oil droplets, Oil phase after demulsification. The generation of remaining oil in porous media is due to the non-uniform wetting modification in different regions. This study further improves the understanding of the mechanism of spontaneous imbibition of nano emulsion in tight sandstone reservoirs.

Abstract:Nowadays, nanoemulsions have shown a high application potential in improving hydrocarbon recovery from tight reservoirs. However, the adsorption characteristics, isotherms, kinetics of nanoemulsions onto reservoir rocks surface and the diffusion behavior into reservoir matrix are still not been systematically clarified. In this work, nanoemulsion was prepared by diluted microemulsion method using two nonionic surfactants, isopropanol, limonene and 2.0 wt% KCl solution. The static adsorption capacity measurement under different influencing factors were carried out, and the adsorption process was characterized through equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies. Also, the diffusion behavior of nanoemulsion in the sandstone reservoir matrix were evaluated by core flooding experiments. Results indicated that the nanoemulsion was successfully synthesized and the droplet size mainly distributed between 8 and 18 nm. It had been found that the optimal static adsorption experimental parameters for 0.1 wt% nanoemulsion were 1:8 solid–liquid ratio and 50/60 mesh rock powder. Equilibrium adsorption results indicated that Langmuir model yielded a better fit which means that single-layer coverage of the surfactants composed of nanoemulsion onto the rock surfaces was more probable. Meanwhile, it was concluded that the pseudo-second order model could better describe the kinetic behavior of nanoemulsion adsorption onto the rock surfaces, which revealed that the adsorption rate was positively correlated with the nanoemulsion concentration. Dynamic adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption amount is inversely proportional to the core permeability, while the diffusion coefficient increases with the increase of permeability. Moreover, the advantage of nanoemulsions over sole surfactant is that the oil nucleus in the nanoemulsions enable control the release of the attached surfactants, and there is a competitive adsorption relationship between oil nucleus and rock surface for the free surfactants in the solution, which offers a possibility for reducing the surfactant adsorption loss and extending the invasion distance in the reservoir matrix. The findings obtained in this study can help for better understanding of the interaction mechanism between nanoemulsions and reservoir rocks, and provide guidance for selecting appropriate nanoemulsions for the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project in tight sandstone reservoirs.

Abstract:Tight sandstone gas reservoirs are characterized by deep burial, high pressure, tight matrix, fracture development, and the prevalence of edge and bottom water. Because of the small pore throats, the phenomenon of capillary force is evident. In addition, the low permeability of the reservoir and the difference in fluid properties make the gas reservoir undergo severe water-blocking damage. In this paper, centrifugal and nuclear magnetic resonance methods are used. The relationship between pore throat characteristics, fluid distribution, and gas reservoir water-blocking mechanism is studied and analyzed. The experimental results show that fracture formation increases the porosity of the small pores and expands the pore size distribution. It is conducive to the displacement of the bound water in the small pore space and the reduction in the bound water saturation. When increasing the same displacement pressure, the core porosity increases. More residual water in the tiny pores is converted to moveable water, thereby reducing the capillary resistance. The high-angle penetration fractures and complex seam networks are created by fractures. They connect the pores to form a fracture network structure, which is conducive to the communication of seepage channels. The increase in porosity and the creation of a complex fracture network make the water inrush along the fractures more even in the process of mining. This slows the advance speed of the water invasion front and reduces the damage of water blocking. The results enhance the understanding of the water invasion mechanism of edge and bottom water so as to improve the recovery factors of tight sandstone gas reservoirs.

Abstract:The efficiency of reservoir imbibition in continental tight sandstone reservoirs is severely hindered due to their intricate wettability characteristics. To address this challenge, we propose a novel synergistic approach that combines low-frequency vibration and nanofluid treatment. This method integrates physical shear and chemical wettability alteration to effectively modify the wettability of neutral oil-wet tight sandstone, thereby enhancing the imbibition process. In this study, we formulated a TX-100 nanofluid system through physical modification. By utilizing the contact angle as a benchmark for evaluation, we investigated the impact of low-frequency fluctuations on the wettability of oil-wet sandstone. Subsequently, we identified the optimal combination of wave parameters. Through isothermal adsorption experiments and mechanical analyses of oil droplets subjected to fluctuations, we systematically elucidated the mechanism by which fluctuations collaborate with nanofluids to alter the wettability of oil-wet sandstone. Furthermore, we evaluated the oil displacement efficiency of cores subjected to the combined action of low-frequency fluctuations and nanofluid treatment. Our findings revealed that the TX-100 nanofluid reduced the static contact angle of oil-wet sandstone by 58%. When assisted by the optimal fluctuation parameters, the nanofluid treatment contributed to a 64% reduction in the contact angle of strongly oil-wet sandstone. This effect further amplified the reversal of wettability in oil-wet sandstone. Through the application of various wave-assisted treatment agents, the efficiency of oil removal was increased by a minimum of 16%. Moreover, the recovery degree of wave-assisted nanofluid imbibition experienced a remarkable enhancement of 30.39%. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in pore sizes smaller than 1 μm as a result of the composite process.

Abstract:Tight sandstone gas is a significant unconventional natural gas resource, and has been exploited economically mostly through the application of hydraulic fracturing technology in recent decades. However, formation damage occurs when fracturing fluid percolates into the pores inside sandstones through imbibition driven by capillary pressure during fracturing operations. In this work, the formation damage resulting from the whole operation process composed of fracturing, well shut-in and flowback, and the degree of damage at different moments were investigated through core flow experiments and the low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique. The results show that imbibition damage occurs starting from the contact surface between the formation and the fracturing fluid, which penetrates into an increasingly deep position with time down to a certain depth. The T2 spectra of NMR at different moments indicates that fracturing fluid initially enters the small pores, followed by the large pores due to the larger capillary pressure in the former. Thus, the sandstone cores with low permeability incur a higher degree of damage due to their stronger capability of retaining fracturing fluid compared to high-permeability cores. The front position of the fracturing fluid imbibition at different moments, along with the degree of damage, were characterized through the one-dimensional encoding processing of the NMR signal. These results underlie the effective strategy to relieve formation damage resulting from imbibition during hydraulic fracturing operations.

Abstract:Because of its characteristics and advantages, nano-materials can significantly improve the performance of fracturing fluid after being added to fracturing fluid. The research on the action mechanism of nano-materials in fracturing fluids is the theoretical basis and basis for developing functional fracturing fluids. At the nanoscale (50nm), SiO2 was modified with C8 and quaternary ammonium salt (QAS),synthesizing the Hydrophobic nano-materials SiO2-C8 and hydrophobic charged nanomaterials SiO2-QAS .The dispersion method, addition amount, compatibility stability and rheological properties of SiO2, SiO2-C8 and SiO2-QAS nano-materials in SRFP clean fracturing fluid system were studied. By means of quantitative simulation methods, the adsorption structure model and adsorption kinetics of nano-materials on sandstone surface were established The model analyzes the adsorption and oil-water separation characteristics of nano-materials on the sandstone surface. The research results show that the three nano-materials have better dispersion stability in the clean fracturing fluid, can effectively reduce the surface tension of the fracturing fluid, and show better temperature and shear resistance; Due to the special adsorption characteristics and specific interface effects of SiO2-C8 and SiO2-QAS nano-materials, which are beneficial to the replacement of oil molecules on the sandstone surface after the addition of fracturing fluid, and promote the separation of oil and water. The addition of SiO2-C8 and SiO2-QAS nano-materials can effectively improve the performance of fracturing fluid, improve the oil displacement effect on the surface of sandstone, and achieve the purpose of reducing oil saturation and increasing the fluidity of crude oil within the range of fracturing fluid. The results can be used as a reference for the development of functional fracturing fluid and the progress of fracturing technology for tight oil and shale oil.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of fracturing fluid on the permeability of tight oil reservoirs is analyzed through oil absorption. The mechanism of permeation and absorption in tight oil reservoirs was studied using the molecular dynamics simulation of fluid flow through fractures in porous media containing crude oil. The influence of surfactants on the adsorption characteristics of crude oil formations on rock walls was also examined. The research results show that the introduction of the appropriate surfactant to the fracturing fluid could accelerate the rate of percolation and recovery as well as improve the recovery rate of absorption. The optimal concentration of polyoxyethylene octyl phenol ether-10 (OP-10) surfactant in the fracturing fluid was 0.9%. When the percolation reached a certain stage, the capillary forces in the crude oil and percolation medium in the pore stabilized; accordingly, the crude oil from the pore roar should be discharged at the earliest. The fluid flow through the fracture effectively carries the oil seeping out near the fractured wall to avoid the stability of the seepage and absorption systems. The surfactant can change the rock absorbability for crude oil, the result of which is that the percolating liquid can adsorb on the rock wall, thus improving the discharge of crude oil. The results of this study are anticipated to significantly contribute to the advancement of oil and gas recovery from tight oil reservoirs.

Abstract:<p>During drilling, completion and fracturing operations, aqueous phase from working fluids can invade into rock formations and engender phase trapping damage in the near well region. This formation damage can diminish the gas relative permeability and hinder the gas well productivity in tight gas sandstone reservoirs. In this study, we investigated the mixed surfactants system of cationic surfactant (SDCSA-1) and nonionic fluorinated surfactant (FC-0) at varied mixing mole ratios and concentrations to reduce the formation damage. Results showed that the minimum surface tension of mixed surfactants solution was relatively low with around 20 mN/m. In addition, surfactant mixtures altered the wettability of sandstone rock from water wetting to intermediate wetting condition. An optimal mixed system was obtained when the concentration is 10-4 mol/L and mole ratio of individual surfactants is 1:1. The mechanism of wettability alteration of surfactants to liquid/rock interface was further determined by adsorption experiments, atomic force microscopy(AFM) tests, and energy dispersive spectrum(EDS) tests. Two sets of spontaneous imbibition experiments were conducted including parallel imbibition tests and sequential imbibition tests. We observed that mixed surfactants solution can prominently prevent liquid invasion into sandstone rocks. We further calculated the capillary pressure to quantitatively examine the capillary effects of different imbibed fluids. When sandstone sample was treated by mixed surfactants, the capillary pressure decreased from 7.81 MPa to 0.97 MPa. Core displacement tests revealed that the liquid saturation of core sample filled with surfactants mixture decreased from 100% to 35.48% and the its gas permeability recovered to 72.86% of the core without liquid after gas flooding. NMR tests also confirmed that surfactant mixtures can be more easily drained than brine from pores in tight sandstone. Consequently, we proposed an improved method to mitigate water blocking damage based on wettability alteration by mixed cationic surfactant and nonionic fluoro-surfactant system.</p>

Investigation of the Effect of Fracturing Fluids on Shale Pore Structure by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing technology significantly enhances the productivity of shale oil and gas reservoirs. Nonetheless, the infiltration of fracturing fluid into shale formations can detrimentally affect the microscopic pore structure, thereby impairing the efficacy of hydraulic stimulation. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology was utilized to conduct high-pressure soaking tests on shale specimens treated with EM30+ + guar gum mixed water and CNI nano variable-viscosity slickwater, where various concentrations of a drag reducer were utilized. Additionally, the differences in porosity, permeability, mineral composition, and iron ion concentration before and after the measurements were compared, which were used to analyze the influence on the shale's microscopic pore structure. It features a reduction in the total pore volume after the interaction with the fracturing fluid, with the pore-throat damage degree, porosity damage degree, and permeability damage degree ranging from 0.63% to 5.62%, 1.51% to 6.84%, and 4.17% to 19.61%, respectively. Notably, EM30+ + guar gum mixed water exhibits heightened adsorption retention, alkaline dissolution, and precipitation compared to CNI nano variable-viscosity slickwater, rendering it more deleterious to shale. Moreover, higher concentrations of drag reducers, such as EM30+ or CNI-B, predominantly result in damage to the shale's micropores. Shale compositions characterized by lower content of quartz and elevated proportions of clay minerals and iron-bearing minerals showcase augmented mineral dissolution and precipitation, consequently intensifying the shale damage. The hydration expansion of mixed-layer illite/smectite profoundly diminishes the core permeability. Consequently, the mechanisms underpinning the damage inflicted on shale's microscopic pore structure primarily involve fracturing fluid adsorption and retention, mineral dissolution, and precipitation, such as clay minerals and iron-containing minerals.

Abstract:A substantial volume of aqueous fluid is held in the pore throat of tight sandstone gas reservoirs due to poor porosity and permeability, complicated clay minerals, and pore structures, causing water lock and affecting gas well productivity. As a result, clarifying the water lock damage law of tight sandstone reservoirs is critical for improving gas well productivity. This research explains the pore structure characteristics of tight sandstone reservoirs and uncovers the water lock effect and reservoir damage process under various effusion saturations using constant velocity mercury injection and water lock damage experiments. On this basis, the productivity equation for fractured horizontal wells is created, taking into account slippage, stress sensitivity, and the water lock effect. The reservoir flow law and its impact on productivity in the presence of a water lock are investigated. Moreover, at last, the water lock release formula suitable for the target reservoir is chosen based on the actual reservoir features. Water saturation and reverse effusion had the greatest impact on permeability, according to the findings. Simultaneously, when comparing the productivity change law under various influencing circumstances, it can be shown that the water lock effect is the most important component causing the loss of gas well productivity, and it is something that should be considered in actual production. Lastly, the water lock release experiment demonstrated that introducing a variety of chemicals into the formation is the most effective method of repairing water lock damage. Among them, the 0.9% FS-3100 + 5% hydrofluoric acid +5% clay stabilizer can increase the core permeability by about 10.47 times. To summarize, this work describes the features of water lock damage in tight gas reservoirs and proposes effective water lock removal techniques, which can provide some theoretical advice for tight gas reservoir development.

Abstract:Guar fracturing technology has been considered as a kind of popular EOR technology, but the weak static suspension capacity becomes a challenge due to the poor temperature resistance and stability of guar fracturing fluid. The main goal of this investigation is to explore the effect of different factors on the high-pressure static sand suspension of guar gum fracturing fluid by a synthetic efficient nano-ZrO2 cross-linker. In particular, a mechanism of static suspended sand of nano-ZrO2 cross-linker is analyzed by microscopic simulation. The adsorption performance of guar fracturing fluid on the shale surface is also studied for analyzing the environmental pollution and damage of guar gum fracturing fluid to shale reservoirs after cross-linking in this investigation. The results obtained that the inclusion of a small content of nano-ZrO2 cross-linker (0.4%) leads to an apparent increase of fracturing fluid viscosity and decrease in the falling quality of gravel (104 mPa·s and 0.3 g) compared to the classical cross-linker (63 mPa·s and 3.5 g). The lower adsorption capacity of guar fracturing fluid containing nano-ZrO2 cross-linker on the shale surface means that it has a weaker pollution ability to the shale reservoir than the commercially available cross-linker. Meanwhile, the grid structure density formed by nano-cross-linker and guar gum is considered to be the key factor to significantly change the suspended sand capacity. The investigation of nano-cross-linker cannot only provide necessary theoretical technology and data support for the stability of water-based fracturing fluid, efficient sand carrying, and the development of water-based fracturing technology, but also effectively protect the underground shale reservoir.

Abstract:As an economical and reusable method of enhancing oil recovery, waterflooding is widely used in the development of tight oil reservoirs, although it has often been found unsuccessful owing to the adverse properties of tight rocks. Accurate knowledge of the pore-scale distribution of oil in tight rocks during waterflooding is needed for devising strategies to maximize oil recovery. Here, we used a two-fold approach to identify the amount and spatial distribution of the residual oil as a function of injection pressure. We i) characterized the pore structure of two cores from a tight sandstone reservoir in the Ordos basin, China, and ii) conducted waterflooding experiments with different injection pressures using nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We found that even small differences in the tight sandstones pore structures caused measurable variations of the amounts oil produced from different classes of pores. For example, in experiments using identical water injection pressures but samples with different permeabilities, a permeability increase by a factor of 3 corresponded to a 10% reduction in oil recovery. We also found that the increase in residual oil saturation caused by increasing the injection pressure was unfavorably dependent on the pore structure heterogeneity. This observation was supported by pore network simulations, which were additionally carried out. We therefore conclude that it is necessary to evaluate the pore structure heterogeneity of the reservoir rocks when attempting to enhance the oil recovery factor of a tight reservoir by means of the common strategy of raising the waterflood injection pressure.

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing technology is vital for the efficient extraction of oil and gas from low-permeability tight sandstone reservoirs.Taking the central Bohai oilfield in China as an example, these fields are typically composed of thinly interbedded tight sandstone, characterized by low permeability and significant lithological heterogeneity between layers. Fractures may either be confined, limiting vertical growth and reducing production, or overextend into water-bearing zones, causing contamination and compromising reservoir integrity. Therefore, predicting vertical fracture propagation during field fracturing operations is critical for efficient resource extraction.However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms governing vertical fracture growth offshore.This paper applies numerical simulations based on the finite element method to elucidate the interlayer fracture propagation behavior in low-permeability tight sandstone reservoirs. A fracture propagation model for thin interlayered tight sandstone formations is constructed, and the effects of various factors on hydraulic fracture propagation are systematically analyzed, including geological factors such as interlayer stress contrast, thickness, and differences in elastic modulus, as well as operational parameters including fracturing fluid viscosity and injection rate. This study clarifies the cross-layer propagation patterns of hydraulic fractures under the influence of multiple factors and yields a comprehensive prediction chart for fracture propagation thickness under the combination of complex factors. The results of this research can provide theoretical support for the design of reservoir stimulation operations in low-permeability tight sandstone oilfields.

Abstract:Spontaneous imbibition is an important phenomenon in tight reservoirs. The existence of a large number of fractures and micro-nano pores is the key factor affecting the spontaneous imbibition of tight reservoirs. In this study, based on high-pressure mercury injection and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the pore distribution of tight sandstone is described. The influence of fractures, core porosity and permeability, and surfactants on the spontaneous imbibition of tight sandstone are studied by physical fracturing, interfacial tension test, wettability test and imbibition experiments. The results show that: the pore radius of tight sandstone is concentrated in 0.01–1 μm. Fractures can effectively reduce the oil drop adsorption on the core surface, enhancing the imbibition recovery of the tight sandstone, an increase of about 10%. As the number of fractures increases, the number of oil droplets adsorbed on the core surface decrease and the imbibition rate increases. Core pore structure has a certain influence on core imbibition. The imbibition recovery increases with the increase in pore connectivity, while the imbibition rate increases with the increases in core porosity and permeability. The surfactant can improve the core water wettability and reduce the oil-water interfacial tension, reducing the adsorption of oil droplets on the core surface, and improving the core imbibition recovery, an increase of about 15%. In a word, the existence of fractures and surfactants can enhance the pore connectivity of the reservoir, reduce the adsorption of oil droplets on the core surface, and improve the imbibition rate and recovery rate of the reservoir.

Abstract:Solid phase residue, fracturing fluid filtration, and incomplete backflow during hydraulic fracturing can easily cause damage to tight sandstone reservoir. Thus, it is necessary to explore the relationship between the physical properties of tight reservoirs and damage caused by fracturing fluids. Based on the identification of reservoir physical properties, the relationship between reservoir physical properties and fracturing fluid damage was studied by core displacement, computerized tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results show that the higher the clay mineral content is, the denser the formed core is, and the corresponding core porosity and permeability are lower. When the permeability and porosity of the rock core are relatively high, the overall radius of the pore throat in the rock core shifts to the left under the action of the gel breaking fracturing fluid, showing a decreasing trend. However, when the permeability and porosity of the rock core are relatively low, the frequency peak of the smaller size of the pore throat in the rock core under the action of the gel breaking fracturing fluid increases upwards. The corresponding core permeability decline rate of the two types of tight sandstone reservoirs is 9.91%–8.78% and 15.85%–14.74%. The porosity decline rates are 5.53%–5.84% and 10.40%–9.94%. According to NMR results, it is speculated that under the action of gel breaking fracturing fluid, the small pore throats in the rock core are blocked or even disappear, while the proportion of smaller pore throats increases and the proportion of larger pore throats decreases. The results of this study provide theoretical reference for reservoir protection during the fracturing process of tight sandstone reservoirs.
