Abstract:Successful facial botulinum neurotoxin therapy primarily involves the accurate diagnosis and treatment of the aberrations of human facial expression. Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for treatment of glabellar furrows in 2002, botulinum toxin A injection has skyrocketed into the most common aesthetic procedure performed in the United States: About 2.3 million treatments were administered in 2003. Given these statistics, it seems that many patients have quickly embraced the desire to have a neurotoxin injected by needle into their faces. Indeed, why do patients seek botulinum injection? And why would smoothing facial wrinkles automatically confer an improved facial appearance? To answer these questions, we must first understand the role of human facial lines, wrinkles, and contours in nonverbal facial communication.
