Abstract:Terahertz functional devices with high-Q factor play an important role in spectral sensing, security imaging, and wireless communication. The reported terahertz devices based on the electromagnetic induction transparency (EIT) effect cannot meet the needs of high-Q in practical applications due to the low-Q factor. Therefore, to increase the Q-factor of resonance, researchers introduced the concept of bound state in the continuum (BIC). In the quasi-BIC state, the metasurface can be excited by the incident wave and provide resonance with a high-Q factor because the condition that the resonant state of the BIC state is orthogonal is not satisfied. The split ring resonator (SRR) is one of the most representative artificial microstructures in the metasurface field, and it shows great potential in BIC. In this paper, based on the classical single-SRR array structure, we combine the large and small SRR and change the resonance mode of the inner and outer SRR by changing the outer radius of the inner SRR. The metasurface based on parameter-tuned BIC verified that the continuous modulation of parameters in a system could make a pair of resonant states strongly coupled, and the coherent cancellation of the resonant states will cause the linewidth of one of the resonant states to disappear, thus forming BIC. Compared with the single-SRR array metasurface based on symmetry-protected BIC, the dual-SRR array metasurface designed in this paper has multiple accidental BICs and realizes multichannel multiplexing of X-polarization and Y-polarization. It provides a brilliant platform for high-sensitivity optical sensor array, low threshold laser and efficient optical harmonic generation.
300 GHz Vector Imaging System Based on Self-Mixing Detection

Abstract:We propose an opto-electronic THz vector imaging system based on a self-mixing detection receiver, which can be used to measure thickness of samples. In the proposed system architecture, a THz signal is generated by microwave photonics technology and received by a Schottky barrier diode detector. In the THz free space transmission link, four parabolic mirrors are used to collimate the THz signals, and the sample under test is placed at the focal point of a parabolic mirror. At the receiver side, the transmission signal is down-converted by Schottky barrier diode detector, and the phase information is acquired by a lock-in amplifier, which is used for sample imaging and thickness detection. In the experiment demonstration, a Mach-Zehnder modulator with carrier-suppression is used to generate a two-tone optical signal, and coupled with an external cavity laser for photomixing generation of a two-tone THz signal in the 300GHz frequency band at an uni-traveling carrier photodiode. Several samples with different thicknesses are imaged and compared in the experiment, and the measured thickness error is estimated to be about 3.84%.
Broadband spintronic detection of the absolute field strength of terahertz electromagnetic pulses

Abstract:We demonstrate detection of broadband intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses by Zeeman-torque sampling (ZTS). Our approach is based on magneto-optic probing of the Zeeman torque the terahertz magnetic field exerts on the magnetization of a ferromagnet. Using an 8 nm thick iron film as sensor, we detect pulses from a silicon-based spintronic terahertz emitter with bandwidth 0.1-11 THz and peak field >0.1 MV/cm. Static calibration provides access to absolute transient THz field strengths. We show relevant added values of ZTS compared to electro-optic sampling (EOS): an absolute and echo-free transfer function with simple frequency dependence, linearity even at high terahertz field amplitudes, the straightforward calibration of EOS response functions and the modulation of the polarization-sensitive direction by an external AC magnetic field. Consequently, ZTS has interesting applications even beyond the accurate characterization of broadband high-field terahertz pulses for nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy.

Abstract:A convenient analytical description of an ultrashort terahertz pulse and an analysis of the influence of this pulse on the Zeeman torque dynamics are extremely important tasks due to the potential applications of terahertz radiation. The theoretical expressions proposed in this paper clarify the physics of magnetic dynamics under the action of the magnetic field of a terahertz pulse and show the role of individual parameters of the material and the pulse field in this process. On the basis of the formulas obtained and the available experimental data for fcc- Co film, we analyze the possibilities of recovering information about the magnetic field of the pulse from the observation of magnetization dynamics, as well as the effect of fluence, Gilbert damping, and magnetic anisotropy on the magnetization dynamics induced by ultrashort terahertz radiation. Abstract:Flexible manipulation of terahertz wave polarizations during the generation process is very important for terahertz applications, especially for the next‐generation on‐chip functional terahertz sources. However, current terahertz emitters cannot satisfy such demand, hence calling for new mechanisms and conceptually new terahertz sources. Here an efficient and broadband terahertz source with magnetic‐field‐controlled flexible switching for the polarizations between linear and elliptical states in ferromagnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. More importantly, the chirality, azimuthal angle, and ellipticity of the generated elliptical terahertz wave can be precisely manipulated by harnessing external magnetic fields via effectively tailoring the photoinduced spin currents. Such an ultrafast photomagnetic interaction‐based, magnetic‐field‐controlled, and broadband tunable solid‐state terahertz source integrated with polarization tunability functions not only provides the capability to reveal physical mechanisms of femtosecond spin dynamics, but also demonstrates the feasibility to realize novel on‐chip terahertz functional devices, boosting the potential applications for controlling elementary molecular rotations, phonon vibrations, spin precessions, high‐speed communications, and accelerating the development of ultrafast terahertz optospintronics.

Abstract:Real-time terahertz (THz) imaging offers remarkable application possibilities, especially in the security and medical fields. However, most THz detectors work with scanners, and a long image acquisition time is required. Some thermal detectors can achieve real-time imaging by using a focal plane array but have the drawbacks of low sensitivity due to a lack of suitable absorbing materials. In this study, we propose a novel photomechanical meta-molecule array by conveniently assembling THz meta-atom absorbers and bi-material cantilevers together, which can couple THz radiation to a mechanical deflection of the meta-molecules with high efficiency. By optically reading out the mechanical deflections of all of the meta-molecules simultaneously, real-time THz imaging can be achieved. A polyimide sacrificial layer technique was developed to fabricate the device on a glass wafer, which facilitates the transmission of a readout light while the THz wave radiates onto the meta-molecule array directly from the front side. THz images and video of various objects as well as infrared images of the human body were captured successfully with the fabricated meta-molecule array. The proposed photomechanical device holds promise in applications in single and broadband THz as well as infrared imaging.
A Terahertz Optomechanical Detector Based on Metasurface and Bi-Material Micro-Cantilevers

Abstract:Terahertz imaging technology has shown great potential in many fields. As the core component of terahertz imaging systems, terahertz detectors have received extensive attention. In this paper, a metasurface-based terahertz optomechanical detector is proposed, which is made of two fabrication-friendly materials: gold and silicon nitride. The optomechanical detector is essentially a thermal detector composed of metasurface absorber, bi-material micro-cantilevers and heat insulation pillars. Compared with traditional thermal terahertz detectors, the optomechanical detector employs a metasurface absorber as the terahertz radiation coupler and obtains an absorptivity higher than 90% from 3.24 to 3.98 THz, which is much higher than that of traditional terahertz detectors with absorbers made from natural materials. Furthermore, the detector is fabricated by MEMS process and its responsivity has been verified by a specifically designed optical read-out system; the measured optomechanical responsivity is 24.8 μm/μW, which agrees well with the multi-physics simulation. These results indicated that the detector can be employed as a pixel to form a terahertz focal plane array in the future, and further realize real-time terahertz imaging at room temperature.

Abstract:Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrathin multilayers of magnetic and heavy metals has recently attracted much interest. This method not only provides fundamental insights into photoinduced spin transport and spin-orbit interaction at highest frequencies but has also paved the way to applications such as efficient and ultrabroadband emitters of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. So far, predominantly standard ferromagnetic materials have been exploited. Here, by introducing a suitable figure of merit, we systematically compare the strength of terahertz emission from X/Pt bilayers with X being a complex ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic metal, that is, dysprosium cobalt (DyCo$_5$), gadolinium iron (Gd$_{24}$Fe$_{76}$), Magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) and iron rhodium (FeRh). We find that the performance in terms of spin-current generation not only depends on the spin polarization of the magnet's conduction electrons but also on the specific interface conditions, thereby suggesting terahertz emission spectroscopy to be a highly surface-sensitive technique. In general, our results are relevant for all applications that rely on the optical generation of ultrafast spin currents in spintronic metallic multilayers.

Magnetophotonic waveguide nanostructure for selective ultrafast optical excitation of high-K spin dynamics

Abstract:Optomagnonics provides a promising method of a Joule-loss-free spin control that can be performed at ultrafast timescale. However, the cornerstone of optomagnonics is impossibility to focus the light tighter than a diffraction limit. This constrains minimal size of the optically switched magnetic bits and minimal wavelengths of the optically excited spin waves in optomagnonic devices thus preventing its further progress. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel method of the selective optical excitation of the short exchange spin waves by using a specially designed magnetophotonic grating. This method is based on the creation of the sign-changing profile of the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) induced in a magnetic film due to excitation of the optical guided TE-mode by a femtosecond laser pulse. The spatial period of the IFE profile is subdiffractive which allows to launch narrow band short spin waves whose wavelengths are around 300 nm as was experimentally demonstrated and potentially can be made down to ~ 100 nm. This opens new horizons for optomagnetic applications that are wide ranging, from logical elements to data processing devices.

Abstract:In this study, we developed and demonstrated a millimeter-wave electric field imaging system using an electro-optic crystal and a highly sensitive polarization measurement technique using a polarization image sensor, which was fabricated using a 0.35-μm standard CMOS process. The polarization image sensor was equipped with differential amplifiers that amplified the difference between the 0° and 90° pixels. With the amplifier, the signal-to-noise ratio at low incident light levels was improved. Also, an optical modulator and a semiconductor optical amplifier were used to generate an optical local oscillator (LO) signal with a high modulation accuracy and sufficient optical intensity. By combining the amplified LO signal and a highly sensitive polarization imaging system, we successfully performed millimeter-wave electric field imaging with a spatial resolution of 30×60 μm at a rate of 1 FPS, corresponding to 2400 pixels/s.

Ultrafast unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance driven by terahertz light field

Abstract:The ultrafast control of magnetisation states in magnetically ordered systems is a key technological challenge for developing memory devices operable at picosecond timescales or terahertz (THz) frequencies. Despite significant efforts in ultrafast magnetic switching, convenient ultrafast readout of magnetic states remains under investigation. Currently, many experiments exploit magneto-optical effects for detecting magnetisation states, necessitating laser sources and optical components. However, energy-efficient and cost-effective electrical detection is preferred for practical applications. Unidirectional spin-Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) was proposed as a simple two-terminal geometry for the electrical detection of the magnetisation state in magnetic heterostructures. Here, we demonstrate that USMR is active at THz frequencies for picosecond time readouts, and can be initiated with light fields. We detect ultrafast USMR in various types of ferromagnet/heavy metal thin film heterostructures through THz second harmonic generation. Our studies, combined with temperature-dependent measurements of USMR, reveal a significant contribution from electron-magnon spin-flip scattering. This suggests possibilities for all-electrical detection of THz magnon modes.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) waves show great potential in nondestructive testing, biodetection and cancer imaging. Despite recent progress in THz wave near-field probes/apertures enabling raster scanning of an object's surface, an efficient, nonscanning, noninvasive, deep subdiffraction imaging technique remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate THz near-field microscopy using a reconfigurable spintronic THz emitter array (STEA) based on the computational ghost imaging principle. By illuminating an object with the reconfigurable STEA followed by computing the correlation, we can reconstruct an image of the object with deep subdiffraction resolution. By applying an external magnetic field, in-line polarization rotation of the THz wave is realized, making the fused image contrast polarization-free. Time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of coherent THz pulses further enable objects at different distances or depths to be resolved. The demonstrated ghost spintronic THz-emitter-array microscope (GHOSTEAM) is a radically novel imaging tool for THz near-field imaging, opening paradigm-shifting opportunities for nonintrusive label-free bioimaging in a broadband frequency range from 0.1 to 30 THz (namely, 3.3-1000 cm-1).
Terahertz Photonics on a Chip: Monolithically Integrated Terahertz Optoelectronics based on Quantum Well Structures

Abstract:We introduce a monolithically integrated terahertz optoelectronics (MITO) platform that uses quantum well (QW) structures to enable tunable terahertz signal generation and detection on a single chip. Through photomixing in QW PIN photodiodes, the MITO platform achieves terahertz generation and detection with substantially enhanced power efficiency and sensitivity over previous devices. By integrating semiconductor optical amplifiers, lasers, modulators, filters, demultiplexers, and other passive optical components with photomixers using commercially available photonic integrated circuit foundry processes, this platform supports the development of compact, scalable terahertz systems capable of high-speed data transfer, spectroscopy, and hyperspectral imaging. This advancement positions terahertz technology for widespread use, facilitating practical applications across remote sensing, communications, and medical diagnostics within portable devices.

Abstract:Recently, plasmonic-based sensors operating in the terahertz frequency range have emerged as perspective tools for rapid and efficient label-free biosensing applications. In this work, we present a fully electronic approach allowing us to achieve state-of-the-art sensitivity by utilizing a near-field-coupled electronic sensor. We demonstrate that the proposed concept enables the efficient implementation and probing of a so-called ultra-strongly coupled sub-wavelength meta-atom as well as a single resonant circuit, allowing to limit the volume of material under test down to a few picoliter range. The sensor has been monolithically integrated into a cost-efficient silicon-based CMOS technology. Our findings are supported by both numerical and analytical models and validated through experiments. They lay the groundwork for near-future developments, outlining the perspectives for a terahertz microfluidic lab-on-chip dielectric spectroscopy sensor.

Abstract:Experimental investigations of ultrafast electro-optical properties in magnetic materials manifest their great potential for emerging spintronic optoelectronic devices. Here, using time-resolved terahertz emission spectroscopy, we construct a spintronic terahertz emitter consisting of an IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction. A femtosecond spin current pulse is generated in the thin film of the Ni−Fe layer when it absorbs a femtosecond laser pulse, and then the spin current is converted into a transient charge current by the metallic IrMn3 layer on picosecond timescales. We timely record the terahertz emission associated with this ultrafast conversion process by means of electro-optic sampling. Besides, the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency of the IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction is determined via quantitative analysis of the spin torque ferromagnetic resonance results. We have both optically verified and electrically studied the spin-to-charge conversion of the IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction. Our results enlarge the material choice range of spintronic terahertz emitters, which may promote further investigations of ultrafast spin-to-charge conversion in different heterojunction materials. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.16.024058 © 2021 American Physical Society

Direct spin imaging detector based on freestanding magnetic nanomembranes with electron optical amplification

Abstract:An analog of the optical polarizer/analyzer for electrons, a spin filter based on freestanding ferromagnetic (FM) nanomembrane covering the entrance of the microchannel plate (MCP) was applied for efficient spin filtering and electron amplification in the 2D field of view. To study the spin dependent transmission, we constructed a spin-triode device (spintron), which consists of a compact proximity focused vacuum tube with the Na2KSb spin-polarized electron source, the FM-MCP and phosphor screen placed to run parallel to each other. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of FM nanomembranes consisting of a Co/Pt superlattice deposited on a freestanding 3 nm SiO2 layer with a total thickness of 10 nm. The FM-MCP has 10e6 channels with a single-channel Sherman function S=0.6 and a transmission of 1.5x10e-3 in the low electron energy range. The FM-MCP-based device provides a compact optical method for measuring the spin polarization of free electron beams in the imaging mode and is well suited for photoemission spectroscopy and microscopy methods.

Abstract:We study the terahertz (THz) magnetic field pulse enhanced by a spiral-shaped antenna resonator (SAR). We deposit the SAR on the surface of a terbium-gallium-garnet crystal, which has a large Verdet constant, and measure the Faraday rotation angle for strong THz pulse excitation by magneto-optical sampling (MOS) with near-infrared light. The determined magnetic field strength and field-enhancement spectrum are consistent with the theoretical predictions. This first report of the detection of the magnetic field of a Tesla-class picosecond pulse by magneto-optical sampling is expected to be useful in research on the control of magnetization in spintronic devices.

Abstract:We have performed terahertz time-domain magnetospectroscopy by combining a rapid scanning terahertz time-domain spectrometer based on the electronically coupled optical sampling method with a table-top mini-coil pulsed magnet capable of producing magnetic fields up to 30 T. We demonstrate the capability of this system by measuring coherent cyclotron resonance oscillations in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs and interference-induced terahertz transmittance modifications in a magnetoplasma in lightly doped n-InSb.

Abstract:Author(s): Cheng Hong-Yang, Ma Qian-Ru, Xu Hao-Ran, Zhang Hui-Ping, Jin Zuan-Ming, He Wei, Peng Yan Terahertz spectroscopy and imaging have many applications, so the generation of broadband terahertz radiation is very important, but now it faces some challenges. Opto-spintronic terahertz emitters, composed of nanometer-thin magnetic multilayer, can produce high-quality broad-band terahertz pulses. Integration of opto-spintronic terahertz emitters onto the silicon wafers is the first step towards their usage in modern photonic devices. In this work, Ta/CoFeB/Ir heterostructures are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon wafers by dc magnetron sputtering. Under the illumination of a femtosecond laser pulse on the Ta/CoFeB/Ir trilayer heterostructure grown on silicon substrate, a spin current can be generated in the ferromagnetic layer due to the ultrafast demagnetization. The spin current is transported and injected into the neighboring non-magnetic metal layers of Ta and Ir. Consequently, the spin current can be converted into the charge current due to the strong spin-orbit coupling. The sub-picosecond transient charge current gives rise to the terahertz radiation that enters into the free space. The terahertz electric field is fully inverted when the magnetization is reversed, which indicates a strong connection between THz radiation and spin order of the heterostructure. The THz radiation from Ta/CoFeB/Ir heterostructure covers the 0.1–2.5 THz frequency range with a maximum value of about 0.64 THz. We also investigate the dependence of THz peak-to-peak value on the pump fluence. Terahertz Emission from Compensated Magnetic Heterostructures

Abstract:Terahertz emission spectroscopy (TES) has recently played an important role in unveiling the spin dynamics at a terahertz (THz) frequency range. So far, ferromagnetic (FM)/nonmagnetic (NM) heterostructures have been intensively studied as THz sources. Compensated magnets such as a ferrimagnet (FIM) and antiferromagnet (AFM) are other types of magnetic materials with interesting spin dynamics. In this work, we study TES from compensated magnetic heterostructures including CoGd FIM alloy or IrMn AFM layers. Systematic measurements on composition and temperature dependences of THz emission from CoGd/Pt bilayer structures are conducted. It is found that the emitted THz field is determined by the net spin polarization of the laser induced spin current rather than the net magnetization. The temperature robustness of the FIM based THz emitter is also demonstrated. On the other hand, an AFM plays a different role in THz emission. The IrMn/Pt bilayer shows negligible THz signals, whereas Co/IrMn induces sizable THz outputs, indicating that IrMn is not a good spin current generator, but a good detector. Our results not only suggest that a compensated magnet can be utilized for robust THz emission, but also provide a new approach to study the magnetization dynamics especially near the magnetization compensation point.
