Abstract:Using a finite-element program, the drag on an unbounded fluid in an (inelastic) power-law fluid is estimated. Comparison with upper and lower bounds, and with experimental data is given. Some remarks on wall effects are also made, and it is shown that wall effects are negligible forn ⩽ 0.5.

Abstract:In this paper, the flow of power-law fluid over a circular cylinder near a moving wall is simulated numerically using a finite volume method for different Reynolds numbers ( Re = 1, 10, 40), gap ratios ( G / D = 0.2–1.0), and power-law indices ( n = 0.5–1.5). The effects of fluid inertia, wall proximity, and rheological property on the drag and lift coefficient, gap flow characteristics, and recirculation modes are studied. Possible mechanisms for the variation of the drag and lift coefficient and the change in recirculation mode are addressed. The results show that the decrease in G / D or Re results in the increase in drag and lift coefficient, while the effect of n is dependent on Re and G / D . For the drag coefficient, shear-thickening fluid is more sensitive to the change of G / D . The variation of the lift coefficient can be explained by the movement of angular position of the front stagnation point. The redistribution of the flow around the cylinder results in different recirculation modes. Five distinct modes are found and the critical value of G / D for the mode change decreases with the decrease in n and increase in Re . Variation of the relative vortex intensity and the relative flow intensity nearby leads to the change of recirculation mode.

Abstract:The force distribution on a surface-piercing yawed cylinder surface differs significantly from that on a surface-piercing vertical cylinder. The established numerical model for flow past the surface-piercing yawed cylinder with yaw angles from −45° to 45° was solved by the standard large-eddy simulation (LES) methodology. Six cases at intervals of ±15° relative to the vertical were studied at the Reynolds number of 27000 and the Froude number of 0.8 based on the cylinder diameter and free-stream velocity, among which the drag forces on four cylinders with yaw angles from −15° to 30° were tested for the validation of the LES approach. The results revealed that the time-averaged total drag coefficient for all cases increases with the increase of yaw angle compared to that of the surface-piercing vertical cylinder, even over 2.5 for the ±45°-yawed cylinders. The sectional drag coefficients for the negatively yawed cylinders are much greater than that for the vertical cylinder, and much less for the positively yawed cylinders. The unbalanced hydrostatic pressures on the inclined section are mainly responsible for those increment and decrement. Once the hydrostatic pressure was removed, the sectional drag coefficient on the mid-span of the positively yawed cylinder increases from the top section to the bottom, and decreases for the negatively yawed cylinder. The corresponding integrated total drag coefficient decreases with the increase of the yaw angle to ±15°, then increases with the further increase of the magnitude of yaw angle.

Abstract:The drag force on a sphere in tangential and normal motion to a plane wall is evaluated in the limit of large Knudsen number and small Mach (and Strouhal) number assuming isothermal conditions and diffuse reflection of gas molecules on walls. In the limit of free molecular flow, the molecular distribution function of the gas is evaluated using a set of coupled Fredholm integral equations. The results are compared with direct simulation Monte Carlo calculations and extended for finite Knudsen numbers. In all cases stronger dependence of the force on the width of the gap is found for normal compared to tangential motion. When the flow within the gap can be considered as essentially collisionless in nature, a similar dependence of the force on the gap width is observed at finite Knudsen numbers as in the free molecular case.

Abstract:In this study, we present a fictitious domain method for the dynamic simulation of particle motion in a Bingham viscoplastic fluid at moderate Bingham numbers. Our method is built on the framework established by Glowinski and his coworkers, in the sense that we use their formulation and their operator-splitting idea to simplify the computation, but differs from their method in both spatial and temporal discretizations of the governing equations. Concerning the space scheme, we use a finite-difference method to discretize equations and a collocation-element method to enforce the rigid-body motion constraint inside the particle boundaries. Concerning the time scheme, the combined system is decoupled into three sub-systems: a Navier–Stokes problem, a plasticity problem and a rigid-body-motion problem, and we solve the Navier–Stokes problem with the classic projection method. The plasticity and rigid-body-motion multipliers at the previous time-level are retained in the Navier–Stokes problem to reduce the splitting error. In addition, the present study shows that retaining a viscous diffusion term in the plasticity problem is not necessary for the convergence of the iteration. The method is verified by comparing our results on the lid-driven cavity flow, the drag coefficient for a sphere settling in a tube and the hydrodynamic interactions between two spheres translating along the tube axis to the data available in the literature. Our results confirm that the drag coefficient for a sphere settling in a Bingham fluid at non-zero Reynolds numbers can be well correlated with an effective Reynolds number. For two approaching spheres, there exists a critical separation distance above which a drag-reduction is observed and below which a drag-enhancement takes place, compared to the drag for a single sphere. The drag-reduction however does not happen to a sphere falling towards a solid wall at the moderate Bingham numbers we studied. These observations are explained by a consideration of the competition between a shear-thinning plastic force and a repulsive lubrication force on the sphere occurring in the squeezing flow.

Abstract:In this study, direct numerical simulations (DNS) was used to investigate the flow behavior of power-law fluids flow around a circular cylinder near a wall at the Reynolds number of 200. The power-law index n represents the typical situation of shear-thinning fluids ( n=0.2 to 1.0), whereas the gap ratio G/D ranges from 0.2 to 1.0 (where G represents the gap between the cylinder and the plane wall and D represents the diameter of the cylinder). This study aimed to analyze the influence of the power-law index and gap ratio on the time-averaged flow, vortex dynamics, and the force exerted on the cylinder. The results indicate that for G/D≥0.5 and n≤0.5 , two secondary vortex structures form behind the cylinder because of the induction of the primary vortices, and they are in reverse rotation. An analysis of the signed enstrophy revealed a positive correlation between the strengths of the primary and secondary vortices, both of which diminished as the gap ratio decreased and increased as the power-law index decreased. Notably, vortex shedding was observed at G/D=0.3 when n≤0.3 , which is absent in Newtonian fluids. Through the analysis of vorticity transport equation, the development of vorticity is attributed to changes in the convection term, viscosity diffusion term and viscosity gradient term. By examining the key points, the formation of secondary vortex structure and the reason of vortex shedding at G/D=0.3 in power-law fluids are explained. Furthermore, the time-averaged drag coefficient C ̄D initially decreases and then increases with decreasing n , and decreases with decreasing G/D . The time-averaged lift coefficient C ̄L exhibits a typical L-type curve with increasing gap ratios, where C ̄L initially decreases and then increases.

Abstract:We study the drag on a centimetric sphere in a uniform flow in the presence of a free surface as a function of submergence depth. Through direct force measurements in a custom benchtop recirculating flume, we demonstrate that the drag can significantly exceed the corresponding drag in a single-phase flow and achieves a peak at submergence depths just prior to complete immersion. The additional drag in the partially immersed state is rationalized by considering hydrostatic effects associated with the asymmetric surface height profile induced by the obstacle in the flow direction which persists for flow speeds below the minimum capillary-gravity wave speed. At these scales, the sphere's wettability plays a pronounced role in determining the maximum possible drag and results in hysteretic behaviors near touchdown and complete immersion. The influence of flow speed, sphere size, and surface tension on the drag characteristics are additionally explored through a combination of experiments and numerical simulations.

Abstract:A parallel direct-forcing fictitious domain method is employed to perform fully resolved numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow laden with finite-size particles. The effects of the particle-fluid density ratio on the turbulence modulation in the channel flow are investigated at the friction Reynolds number of 180, the particle volume fraction of 0.84%, and the particle-fluid density ratio ranging from 1 to 104.2. The results show that the variation of the flow drag with the particle-fluid density ratio is not monotonic, with a larger flow drag for the density ratio of 10.42, compared to those of unity and 104.2. A significant drag reduction by the particles is observed for large particle-fluid density ratios during the transient stage, but not at the statistically stationary stage. The intensity of particle velocity fluctuations generally decreases with increasing particle inertia, except that the particle streamwise root-mean-square velocity and streamwise-transverse velocity correlation in the near-wall region are largest at the density ratio of the order of 10. The averaged momentum equations are derived with the spatial averaging theorem and are used to analyze the mechanisms for the effects of the particles on the flow drag. The results indicate that the drag-reduction effect due to the decrease in the fluid Reynolds shear stress is counteracted by the drag-enhancement effect due to the increase in the total particle stress or the interphase drag force for the large particle-inertia case. The sum of the total Reynolds stress and particle inner stress contributions to the flow drag is largest at the density ratio of the order of 10, which is the reason for the largest flow drag at this density ratio. The interphase drag force obtained from the averaged momentum equation (the balance theory) is significantly smaller than (but agrees qualitatively with) that from the empirical drag formula based on the phase-averaged slip velocity for large density ratios. For the neutrally buoyant case, the balance theory predicts a positive interphase force on the particles arising from the negative gradient of the particle inner stress, which cannot be predicted by the drag formula based on the phase-averaged slip velocity. In addition, our results show that both particle collision and particle-turbulence interaction play roles in the formation of the inhomogeneous distribution of the particles at the density ratio of the order of 10.

Abstract:The equivalent relation between the spherical and cylindrical particles was built, and the method of equivalent surface area was used to calculate the drag exerted on the cylindrical particle. Then the finite-volume method was applied to obtain the drag numerically. It is found that the drag obtained by the numerical method differs from that obtained by the equivalent surface area method by a factor of 1.5-2.

Abstract:The motion of a sphere freely rising or falling in a 5d (d is the diameter of the sphere) square tube was numerically studied for the sphere-to-fluid density ratio ranging from 0.1 to 2.3 (0.1 ≤ ρs/ρ ≤ 2.3, ρs is the density of spheres and ρ the fluid density) and Galileo number from 140 to 230 (140 ≤ Ga ≤ 230). We report that Hopf bifurcation occurs at Gacrit ≈ 157, where both the heavy and light spheres lose stability. The helical motion is widely seen for all spheres at Ga > 160 resulting from a double-threaded vortex interacting with the tube walls, which becomes irregular at Ga ≥ 190 where heavy spheres act differently from their counterparts; that is, heavy spheres change their helical directions alternately while light spheres exhibit helical trajectories with jaggedness in connection with the shedding of the double-threaded vortices. This is because of the difference in inertia between the heavy and light spheres. We also checked the oscillation periods for the helical motion of the spheres. They show opposite variations with ρs/ρ for the two types of spheres. Light spheres (ρs/ρ ≤ 0.7) reach a zigzagging regime at Ga ≥ 200 where a vortex loop (hairpin-like vortical structure) is formed which may develop into a vortex ring downstream at small ρs/ρ. This might be the first time a transition from the helical motion to the zigzagging motion for heavy spheres (ρs/ρ ≥ 1.8) has been reported. Finally, we examined the dependence of both the terminal Reynolds number and the drag coefficient of the spheres on the Galileo number.
Unsteady drag force on an immersed sphere oscillating near a wall

Abstract:The unsteady hydrodynamic drag exerted on an oscillating sphere near a planar wall is addressed experimentally, theoretically, and numerically. The experiments are performed by using colloidal-probe Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in thermal noise mode. The natural resonance frequencies and quality factors are extracted from the measurement of the power spectrum density of the probe oscillation for a broad range of gap distances and Womersley numbers. The shift in the natural resonance frequency of the colloidal probe as the probe goes close to a solid wall infers the wall-induced variations of the effective mass of the probe. Interestingly, a crossover from a positive to a negative shift is observed as the Womersley number increases. In order to rationalize the results, the confined unsteady Stokes equation is solved numerically using a finite-element method, as well as asymptotic calculations.The in-phase and out-of-phase terms of the hydrodynamic drag acting on the sphere are obtained and agree well to the experimental results. All together, the experimental, theoretical, and numerical results show that the hydrodynamic force felt by an immersed sphere oscillating near a wall is highly dependent on the Womersley number.

Abstract:By means of lattice-Boltzmann simulations the drag force on a sphere of radius R approaching a superhydrophobic striped wall has been investigated as a function of arbitrary separation h. Superhydrophobic (perfect-slip vs. no-slip) stripes are characterized by a texture period L and a fraction of the gas area ϕ. For very large values of h/R, we recover the macroscopic formulae for a sphere moving towards a hydrophilic no-slip plane. For h/R = O(1), the drag force is smaller than predicted by classical theories for hydrophilic no-slip surfaces, but larger than expected for a sphere interacting with a uniform perfectly slipping wall. At a thinner gap, h ≪ R the force reduction compared to a classical result becomes more pronounced, and is maximized by increasing ϕ. In the limit of very small separations, our simulation data are in quantitative agreement with an asymptotic equation, which relates a correction to a force for superhydrophobic slip to texture parameters. In addition, we examine the flow and pressure field and observe their oscillatory character in the transverse direction in the vicinity of the wall, which reflects the influence of the heterogeneity and anisotropy of the striped texture. Finally, we investigate the lateral force on the sphere, which is detectable in case of very small separations and is maximized by stripes with ϕ = 0.5.

Solution behavior of the falling sphere problem in viscoelastic flows

Abstract:The hp -finite element method and pseudo arc-length method are combined to track solution behavior of the steady flow of a sphere falling in a tube filled with viscoelastic fluids. The computations is proved to be convergent and stable by a posteriori error analyses; the solutions smooth and with extremely steep stress gradient are obtained by using appropriate high-order interpolation distributions. The commonly used drag coefficient is proved not a reliable indicator for the approximation error. The solution curves of the upper convected Maxwell (UCM) and the Oldroyd-B fluids clearly indicate that there exist limiting points, parameterized by the Deborah number, where the magnitude of the solutions and the axial normal stress gradients behind the rear stagnation rise up rapidly, maybe go to infinity. The limiting points can be simply removed by employing the modified Chilcott and Rallison (MCR) fluid, which replaces the infinitely extendable, linear Gaussian chain with the finitely extendable nonlinear elastic spring (the FENE chain). Therefore the limiting behavior is caused by the physical model; it is not a numerical artifact.
A General Drag Coefficient for Flow over a Sphere

Abstract:A generalized physics-based expression for the drag coefficient of spherical particles moving in a fluid is derived. The proposed correlation incorporates essential rarefied physics, low-speed hydrodynamics, and shock-wave physics to accurately model the particle-drag force for a wide range of Mach and Knudsen numbers (and therefore Reynolds number) a particle may experience. Owing to the basis of the derivation in physics-based scaling laws, the proposed correlation embeds gas-specific properties and has explicit dependence on the ratio of specific heat capacities at constant pressure and constant volume. The correlation is applicable for arbitrary particle relative velocity, particle diameter, gas pressure, gas temperature, and surface temperature. Compared to existing drag models, the correlation is shown to more accurately reproduce a wide range of experimental data. Finally, the new correlation is applied to simulate dust particles' trajectories in high-speed flow, relevant to a spacecraft entering the Martian atmosphere. The enhanced surface heat flux due to particle impact is found to be sensitive to the particle drag model.

Wall Forces on a Sphere in a Rotating Liquid-Filled Cylinder

Abstract:We experimentally study the behavior of a particle slightly denser than the surrounding liquid in solid body rotating flow. Earlier work revealed that a heavy particle has an unstable equilibrium point in unbounded rotating flows [G. O. Roberts, D. M Kornfeld, and W. W Fowlis, J. Fluid Mech. 229, 555–567 (1991)10.1017/S0022112091003166]. In the confinement of the rotational flow by a cylindrical wall a heavy sphere with density 1.05 g/cm3 describes an orbital motion in our experiments. This is due to the effect of the wall near the sphere, i.e., a repulsive force (FW). We model FW on the sphere as a function of the distance from the wall (L): FW∝L−4 as proposed by Takemura et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 495, 235–253 (2003)10.1017/S0022112003006232]. Remarkably, the path evaluated from the model including FW reproduces the experimentally measured trajectory. In addition during an orbital motion the particle does not spin around its axis, and we provide a possible explanation for this phenomenon.
Effect of turbulent fluctuations on the drag and lift forces on a towed sphere and its boundary layer

Abstract:The impact of turbulent fluctuations on the forces exerted by a fluid on a towed spherical particle is investigated by means of high-resolution direct numerical simulations. The measurements are carried out using a novel scheme to integrate the two-way coupling between the particle and the incompressible surrounding fluid flow maintained in a high-Reynolds-number turbulent regime. The main idea consists in combining a Fourier pseudo-spectral method for the fluid with an immersed-boundary technique to impose the no-slip boundary condition on the surface of the particle. Benchmarking of the code shows a good agreement with experimental and numerical measurements from other groups. A study of the turbulent wake downstream the sphere is also reported. The mean velocity deficit is shown to behave as the inverse of the distance from the particle, as predicted from classical similarity analysis. This law is reinterpreted in terms of the principle of "permanence of large eddies" that relates infrared asymptotic self-similarity to the law of decay of energy in homogeneous turbulence. The developed method is then used to attack the problem of an upstream flow that is in a developed turbulent regime. It is shown that the average drag force increases as a function of the turbulent intensity and the particle Reynolds number. This increase is significantly larger than predicted by standard drag correlations based on laminar upstream flows. It is found that the relevant parameter is the ratio of the viscous boundary layer thickness to the dissipation scale of the ambient turbulent flow. The drag enhancement can be motivated by the modification of the mean velocity and pressure profile around the sphere by small scale turbulent fluctuations.

Abstract:We analyze theoretically a high-speed drainage of liquid films squeezed between a hydrophilic sphere and a textured super-hydrophobic plane, that contains trapped gas bubbles. A super-hydrophobic wall is characterized by parameters $L$ (texture characteristic length), $b_1$ and $b_2$ (local slip lengths at solid and gas areas), and $\phi_1$ and $\phi_2$ (fractions of solid and gas areas). Hydrodynamic properties of the plane are fully expressed in terms of the effective slip-length tensor with eigenvalues that depend on texture parameters and $H$ (local separation). The effect of effective slip is predicted to decrease the force as compared with expected for two hydrophilic surfaces and described by the Taylor equation. The presence of additional length scales, $L$, $b_1$ and $b_2$, implies that a film drainage can be much richer than in case of a sphere moving towards a hydrophilic plane. For a large (compared to $L$) gap the reduction of the force is small, and for all textures the force is similar to expected when a sphere is moving towards a smooth hydrophilic plane that is shifted down from the super-hydrophobic wall. The value of this shift is equal to the average of the eigenvalues of the slip-length tensor. By analyzing striped super-hydrophobic surfaces, we then compute the correction to the Taylor equation for an arbitrary gap. We show that at thinner gap the force reduction becomes more pronounced, and that it depends strongly on the fraction of the gas area and local slip lengths. For small separations we derive an exact equation, which relates a correction for effective slip to texture parameters. Our analysis provides a framework for interpreting recent force measurements in the presence of super-hydrophobic surface.

Abstract:Controversy exists regarding whether grain morphology reduces or enhances the drag of a single grain in creeping flows; further complication occurs when orientation dependence for aspherical grains comes into play. To quantify influences of shape irregularity and orientation, this study numerically investigates the drag in creeping flows for fractally rough grains depicted by Spherical Harmonics. As the grain surface becomes more angular with increasing relative roughness and fractal dimension, a stronger drag reduction is observed; this observed morphology-dependent reduction indicates Stokes formula is insufficient. The rotational dependence helps to explain the paradox wherein drag enhancement is always encountered insettling-grain experiments popular in geophysics. For the drag of a given rough grain at various orientations, extracted distributions of the overall drag, and its two components, i.e., skin friction and pressure drag, universally adhere to the Weibull patterns. Moreover, we identify a universal power law between drag coefficients and a newly proposed area-related number, sufficiently taking into consideration both grain roughness by surface area and orientational dependence by projected area perpendicular to the flow direction. This law is primarily controlled by relative roughness, with less sensitivity to fractal dimension. The determined expression enables precise estimation of fluid-particle interactions in upscaling simulations.

Abstract:Considered in this paper is the two-dimensional steady flow of a power-law fluid past a stationary circular cylinder. The governing nonlinear equations, expressed in terms of a stream function and vorticity, were solved by finite differences for Reynolds numbers (based on the radius of the cylinder)R=5,20, 40 for various power-law indices,n. Parameters such as the drag coefficient, separation angle, wake length and critical Reynolds number are presented and contrasted with those of a Newtonian fluid (n=1) to illustrate the non-Newtonian effects. For a given-Reynolds number a consistent behaviour withn was observed in the parameters for the ranges considered. The results obtained for the Newtonian case agree well with documented results.

Abstract:This study investigates flow past a sphere immersed in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer by using direct numerical simulations, with the objective of clarifying the effects of a wall-proximity sphere on turbulent coherent structures and turbulence statistics. Three cases are evaluated with gap ratios ( G / D) of 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 at a Reynolds number of Re D = 2500, where D is the diameter of the sphere and G is the gap width between the bottom of the sphere and the flat plate. The results show that the wake of the sphere plays an important role in the streamwise region 0 < x / D < 10. The near-wall streaks break into small-scale point-like or patch-like structures in the near-wake region, with the most significant effect at G / D = 0.1. This can be attributed to the interactions between the shedding vortex behind the sphere and vortical structures within the flat-plate boundary layer. Detail analysis of turbulence statistics indicates that the flat-plate boundary layer thickness is increased at x / D < − 0.5 owing to the blockage effect of the sphere, whereas it is decreased at x / D > 0.5 because of the high-speed jet flow around it. In addition, the presence of a wall-proximity sphere significantly affects the skin friction coefficient. The budgets of the turbulent kinetic energy show that turbulence production and viscous dissipation are augmented due to the formation of small-scale vortices and interactions among them in the near-wake region, especially at G / D = 0.1.
