Abstract:To meet the demand for Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets with reduced eddy current losses in electric traction motors, increasing the electrical resistivity of the magnets is critical. The high resistivity must be achieved while maintaining high coercivity, which often requires the use of expensive heavy rare earth (HRE) fluorides such as DyF 3 . Although an increase in coercivity without the use of HRE can be achieved by the eutectic grain boundary diffusion process (GBDP), this results in a reduction in the resistivity of the magnet. In this study, we demonstrate the simultaneous improvement in coercivity and resistivity of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets to 1.86 T and 344 μΩ cm, respectively, without relying on HRE. This improvement involves the diffusion of Pr-Cu onto ribbon powder, followed by the addition of a CaF 2 -LiF eutectic mixture prior to the hot pressing and deforming process. This high resistivity results in a reduction in the temperature rise of the magnet under a high frequency AC magnetic field from ∼150 °C to ∼130 °C, while the developed Dy-free magnet can have a sufficiently large coercivity of 0.74 T at 130 °C. The microstructural origin of the high resistivity is the effective isolation of Nd-Fe-B ribbon flakes by a resistive fluoride layer. Furthermore, the optimization of the intergranular phase (IGP) and the formation of (Nd,Pr) 2 Fe 14 B shells contribute to the increase in coercivity. Importantly, no degradation in the mechanical strength of the magnet is observed. This research provides a viable approach to achieve high coercivity and high resistivity in hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets without reliance on HRE elements.
