Abstract:Submicron-structured gold (SMG) exhibits promising prospects for the preparation of Prussian blue (PB)-modified amperometric hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensor. Herein, the influence of deposition time on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of SMG/PB-modified electrodes was researched through scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), cyclic voltammograms (CVs), and chronoamperometry methods. It turned out that the thickness of the PB film on the electrode surface is increased in the deposition time, and the SMG/PB-modified electrodes exhibited the widest linear range and best stability under the optimized deposition time of 240 s. It turns out that thicker PB layer can provide more active PB particles on the electrode’s surface, improving the detecting performance of PB-modified SMG electrodes.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Prussian blue is an iron-cyanide-based pigment steadily becoming a widely used electrochemical sensor in detecting hydrogen peroxide at low concentration levels. Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) have been extensively studied using traditional ensemble methods, which only provide averaged information. Investigating PBNPs at a single entity level is paramount for correlating the electrochemical activities to particle structures and will shed light on the major factors governing the catalyst activity of these nanoparticles. Here we report on using plasmonic electrochemical microscopy (PEM) to study the electrochemistry of PBNPs at the individual nanoparticle level. First, two types of PBNPs were synthesized; type I synthesized with double precursors method and type II synthesized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) assisted single precursor method. Second, both PBNPs types were compared on their electrochemical reduction to form Prussian white, and the effect from the different particle structures was investigated. Type I PBNPs provided better PEM sensitivity and were used to study the catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Progressively decreasing plasmonic signals with respect to increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration were observed, demonstrating the capability of sensing hydrogen peroxide at a single nanoparticle level utilizing this optical imaging technique.</p>

Abstract:Prussian blue (PB) films have been widely used for blood glucose monitoring. Here, we present the strategy to improve the performance and sensitivity of PB film for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) monitoring by using modified gold electrode for hydrogen peroxide monitoring. The microstructure of the studied electrodes was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The electrochemical properties of experimental electrodes were obtained via cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometry methods. The results show that the thickness of deposited PB film is increased with the deposition time. The PB-modified electrode exhibits the widest linear range and best operational stability after being electrochemically deposited for 240 s. The highest sensitivity for experimental electrodes is obtained on samples deposited for 40 s (341 mA cm−2 M−1), indicating that a thinner PB film with certain critical thickness can accelerate the exchanging rate of K+ between PB lattice and the tested solution.

Abstract:Fast and accurate measurement of hydrogen peroxide is essential to glucose monitoring. In this work, we describe a highly efficient H2O2 sensor through the modification of Prussian blue (PB) on the nanoporous gold film (NPG). By de-alloying from Au-Ag film, we prepare the NPG film and characterize it through SEM and AFM. Tests using chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry on the Prussian blue modified NPG electrodes show an excellent electrochemical performance of the sensors. Owing to the comparatively huge specific surface area in the nanoporous structure, such electrodes significantly enhance the direct electron transfer from PB nanocrystals to NPG film. Comparing to earlier PB modified electrodes, the sensor fabricated in this work exhibits the widest linearity of 0.001 similar to 17 mM, and produces a high selectivity of 708 mu A.cm(-2).mM(-1). Prussian Blue Modified Submicron Structured Gold Electrodes for Amperometric Hydrogen Peroxide Sensing

Abstract:In this work, we present a simple and effective approach for fabricating sub-micron structured gold (SM-Au) electrodes by chemically etching the magnetron co-sputtered gold film in KI solution for certain time. Such electrodes with a large surface area to volume ratio were used as the matrix for electrochemical deposition of Prussian blue (PB) to develop an electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensor. Experimental characterization using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope shows that the thickness of PB layer on SM-Au electrode is around 140nm, and is composited with cubic PB nanocrystals. The electrochemical performance of the designed sensor, studied using cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometry methods, suggests that the sensor based on SM-Au/PB electrode presents the direct electron transfer of PB particle towards SM-Au film, and exhibits fast response, wide linearity, low detection limit and high stability. Under the optimized conditions, the sensitivity of the developed sensor for the detection of H2O2 reaches the value of 512mAcm(-2)M(-1) with a linear range from 1M to 4.5mM.

Abstract:A disposable amperometric biosensor for commercial use to detect hydrogen peroxide has been developed. The sensor is based on screen-printed carbon paste electrodes modified by electropolymerization of pyrrole with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) entrapped. The facture techniques of fabricating the enzyme electrodes are suitable for mass production and quality control. The biosensor shows a linear amperometric response to H2O2 from 0.1 to 2.0 mM, with a sensitivity of 33.24 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2). Different operational parameters of electropolymerization are evaluated and optimized.

Abstract:We developed a Prussian blue@Au nanoparticles/SiO2-cavities/indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode for a novel non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide detection. The ordered SiO2 cavities were fabricated on the ITO electrode using the close-packed ordered polystyrene spheres (PS) as templates. The PB@Au nanoparticles were prepared using a two-step process in which gold nanoparticles were deposited at the bottom of the SiO2 cavity by electrochemical methods, while Prussian blue was introduced to the AuNPs surface by chemical deposition. The submicron-sized conductive region and the domain-limiting effect of the insulating SiO2 cavity give the electrode the characteristics of a microelectrode, enabling it to exhibit unique electrochemical properties during the electrochemical reduction of H2O2. The proposed PB@Au/SiO2 cavity/ITO electrode was further used for detecting H2O2 with a wide linearity range of 0.08-8 mM and a low detection limit of 0.3 μM.

Abstract:Au nanoparticles modified with electroactive Prussian blue (PB) were for the first time synthesized by a simple chemical method. Transmission electronic microscopy showed that the average size of the Prussian blue shell/Au core hybrid composite (PB@Au) was about 50 nm, and Fourier transform IR, UV-vis spectra, and cyclic voltammetry confirmed the existence of PB on the surface of Au nanoparticles. Using the LbL technique, multilayer thin films of PB@Au nanoparticles were prepared by the alternate adsorption of oppositely charged linear polyelectrolyte poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) onto ITO glass for the construction of a hydrogen peroxide sensor. The novel multilayer films were characterized by SEM, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The {PAH/PB@Au}n multilayer-modified electrode showed a well-defined pair of redox peaks and dramatic catalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Enzyme-free amperometric ultrasensitive determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was investigated using a Prussian blue (PB) film-modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) graphite–wax composite electrode. A stable PB film was obtained on graphite surface through 2-aminoethanethiol (AET)-capped AuNPs by a simple approach. Field emission scanning electron microscope studies results in formation of PB nanoparticle in the size range of 60–80 nm. Surface modification of PB film on AET–AuNPs–GW composite electrode was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy studies. Highly sensitive determination of H2O2 at a peak potential of −0.10 V (vs. SCE) in 0.1 M KCl PBS, pH = 7.0) at a scan rate of 20 mVs−1 with a sensitivity of 23.58 μA/mM was observed with the modified electrode using cyclic voltammetry. The synergetic effect of PB film with AuNPs has resulted in a linear range of 0.05 to 7,800 μM with a detection limit of 0.015 μM for H2O2 detection with the present electrode. Chronoamperometric studies recorded for the successive additions of H2O2 with the modified electrode showed an excellent linearity (R2 = 0.9932) in the range of 4.8 × 10−8 to 7.4 × 10−8 M with a limit of detection of 1.4 × 10−8 M. Selective determination of H2O2 in presence of various interferents was successfully demonstrated. Human urine samples and stain remover solutions were also investigated for H2O2 content.

Abstract:A facile sacrificial template method was developed for the controlled synthesis of Prussian blue (PB) hollow nanostructures. The hollow nanostructures can either be hollow nanospheres or nanotubes by controlling the shape of the sacrificial template. The morphology, structure and composition of the as-prepared PB hollow nanostructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the PB hollow nanostructures had complementary shapes and sizes of the original sacrificial templates. In addition, PB hollow nanostructures were immobilized on the surface of glassy carbon electrode and applied to detect hydrogen peroxide. Cyclic voltammograms showed that the PB nanotubes kept their intrinsic electrochemical properties, and possessed prominent electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Abstract:The synthesis of highly stable metallic organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposites from the non-toxic and biodegradable organic–inorganic metallic precursors, which are the natural polymer products of organic molecules, carbohydrates, and amino acids, has engrossed the recent researchers. In this work, a simple potentiostatic approach has been designed for the electrochemical preparation of gold nanoparticle-decorated copper cross-linked pectin (CuCP–AuNPs). Here, CuCP act as a scaffold or stabilizing agent for the preparation of uniform AuNPs. The studies for surface morphology and crystal structure of our composite were carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was employed for the elemental analysis of the composite. A remarkable cathodic peak current response was obtained by our modified electrode for the presence of H2O2. CuCP–AuNP-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) possesses the values for limits of detection (LOD) and sensitivity of 0.22 μΜ and 6800 μA mM cm−2, respectively, in a linear range from 1 to 2110 μΜ. The detection of H2O2 in presence of other biologically interfering molecules represents the high selectivity of our fabricated electrode. The examination for the sensitive determination of H2O2 conducted in commercially available lens cleaning solutions validates the practical feasibility of the proposed modified electrode.

Abstract:A hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensor based on Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) is fabricated. Pd NPs are deposited on GCEs by using a gas phase cluster beam deposition technique. The NP-deposited electrodes show enhanced electrocatalytic activity in reduction of H 2 O 2 . The electrode with an optimized NP coverage of 85 % has a high selective and stable nonenzymatic sensing ability of H 2 O 2 with a low detection limit (3.4 × 10 −7 M), high sensitivity (50.9 μA mM −1 ), and a wide linear range (from 1.0 × 10 −6 to 6.0 × 10 −3 M). The reduction peak potential of the electrode is close to −0.12 V, which enables high selective amperometric detection of H 2 O 2 at a low applied potential.

Abstract:Using a simple hydrothermal method combined with a post-annealing treatment, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheet arrays are grown on three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous gold (NPG) film supported on Ni foam substrates, in which NPG is fabricated by chemically dealloying electrodeposited Au–Sn alloy films. The morphology and structure of the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam hybrids are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical activity of the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam electrode toward hydrogen peroxide electroreduction in alkaline medium is studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and chronoamperometry (CA). The results demonstrate that the Co3O4@NPG/Ni foam electrode possesses exceptionally high catalytic activity and excellent stability for the peroxide electroreduction, resulting mainly from the unique electrode architecture. The combined 3D hierarchical porous structures of NPG/Ni foam with the open and porous structures of Co3O4 nanosheet arrays facilitate the mass transport and charge transfer. Therefore, the metal oxides supported on 3D hierarchical porous NPG/Ni foam framework may hold great promise to be effective electrodes for electrocatalytic reduction of peroxide and other electrochemical reactions.
Platinized Silica Nanoporous Membrane Electrodes for Low‐Fouling Hydrogen Peroxide Detection

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important molecule that is widely used or exists in foods, medicines, detergents and human body. Therefore, fast and accurate detection of H2O2 is highly important in food security, disease diagnosis, etc. In this work, we report the fabrication of platinized silica nanoporous membrane (Pt@SNM) electrodes for the detection of H2O2 in complex in vitro and in vivo environments. The porous structure of SNM can effectively confine the electrodeposition of Pt nanostructures and meanwhile prevent the adsorption of fouling species on the underlying electrode. In comparison with conventional electrodes for H2O2 detection, the current one exhibited excellent antifouling ability and worked well in complex real samples. As we demonstrated that the Pt@SNM modified carbon fiber microelectrode could work pretty stably in cortex of rat brain up to 90 min. We believe that this methodology can be extended for electrochemical detection of many other species in strongly fouling media.

Abstract:A new electrode was fabricated by electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on overoxidized polydopamine (OPDA) modified gold electrode. The integration of Au NPs and the OPDA film endowed the Au NPs/OPDA modified electrode with high sensitivity and selectivity and good electrocatalytic activities to reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Compared to electrodes modified with individual Au NPs or OPDA films, the Au NPs/OPDA modified electrode presents the largest current response to reduction of H2O2, due to a possible synergism between the OPDA film and the Au NPs. The proposed H2O2 sensor has a response sensitivity of 52.94 μA mM-1 cm-2 and a wide linear range from 10 μM to 8 mM. The detection limit is estimated to be 0.5 μM.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were decorated on the Prussian blue nanocubes (PBNCs) using the in situ method. The synthesized nanocomposite PBNCs/AuNPs show enhanced electrocatalytic activity for H 2 O 2 detection compared to the bare Prussian blue and gold nanoparticles due to the synergistic effect of AuNPs and PBNCs. The synthesized composites were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. In contrast, the electrochemical measurements used cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and amperometry. The PBNC/AuNP-based electrode shows improved electrochemical performance for H 2 O 2 sensing, such as high sensitivity (up to 2138.2 μA/mM cm 2 ) and limit of detection (LOD = up to 8.9 nM). Thus, the synthesized PBNC/AuNP material provides a simple, promising, cost-effective sensing platform for developing non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:Because of its high activity and selectivity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, Prussian blue (PB) is usually considered as an "artificial enzyme peroxidase" and has been extensively used in the construction of electrochemical biosensors. In this study, we report on the construction of amperometric biosensors via grafting PB nanoparticles on the polymeric matrix of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP). The MWCNT/PVP/PB composite films were synthesized by casting films of MWCNTs wrapped with PVP on gold electrodes followed by electrochemical deposition of PB on the MWCNT/PVP matrix. The electrode modified with the MWCNT/PVP/PB composite film shows prominent electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, which can be explained by the remarkable synergistic effect of the MWCNTs and PB. Therefore, fast amperometric response of this sensor to hydrogen peroxide was observed with a detection sensitivity of 1.3 mu A mu m(-1) of H2O2 per square centimeter area and a detection limit of 25 nM. These results are much better than those reported for PB-based amperometric sensors. In addition, a glucose biosensor fabricated by casting an additional glucose oxidase (GOD) containing Nafion film above the MWCNT/PVP/PB composite film shows promise for the sensitive and fast detection of glucose. The observed high stability, high sensitivity, and high reproducibility of the MWCNT/PVP/PB composite films make them promising for the reliable and durable detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose.

Aniline was employed as both the precursor for PANI and the reducing agent for Cu2+ and graphene oxide. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with the nanocomposite material. Chronoamperometric studies with the modified electrode showed it to enable an efficient electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide at −0.2 V vs. saturated calomel electrode. All measurements were performed in the absence of oxygen. Figures of merit include a wide linear response range (0.8 μM to 12.78 mM) and a low limit of detection of 0.5 μM (S/N = 3).Graphical abstractCuprous oxide/polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites were synthesized through one-step process for fabricating an nonenzymatic electrochemical sensor for hydrogen peroxide.
