Abstract:Effects of lecithin and cholesterol on the growth of Mycobacterium lepraemurium in cell-free liquid medium were studied and the results obtained were as follows:1) The growth of M. lepraemurium was stimulated by addition of either lecithin or cholesterol.2) Optimal concentration of lecithin for stimulation was 0.02% in NCS-5 medium, and 0.005% in NDD-5 medium, respectively.3) Phosphatidyl choline dipalmitoyl had a stimulating effect quite similar to that of lecithin. On the contrary, the growth of M, lepraemurium was inhibited by palmitic acid.4) It was determined that an optimal concentration of cholesterol for stimulating the growth was 0.005%.
Enhanced Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Waste Phosphors by Mechanical Activation

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) make up more than 23 wt% of phosphors in fluorescent lamps (FLs). The REEs recovering from waste phosphors is becoming a critical issue since REEs are considered critical elements, being important in future sustainable applications e.g. wind power, electric vehicles, energy efficient lighting, etc., and also, the accelerated generation of waste FLs. In this present study, mechanical activation (MA) was innovatively employed to pre -treat waste phosphors to recover REEs effectively by an acid leaching process. The results showed the feasibility of using MA to enhance the leaching rate of REEs. The leaching rates of terbium (Tb), lanthanum (La) and cerium (Ce) had a significant enhancement of around 90%; and the leaching rates for europium (Eu) and yttrium (Y) were 93.1% and 94.6%, respectively. Moreover, the mechanism for REEs leaching rates enhancement introduced by MA was explored. Substantial physicochemical changes appeared to be the main causes leading to the effectiveness of mechanical activation for phosphors. These changes include structural destruction and compound decomposition, rather than an increase in specific surface area and a reduction in particle size. All these findings and results indicate that this novel application of MA for enhancing the recovery of REEs from waste phosphors is a promising route. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Study on effect of flux on CeMgAl11O19:Tb3+ phosphor

Abstract:High calcination temperature is an important factor In the preparation process of CeMgAl11O19:Tb3+. To decrease the temperature, different fluxes (H3BO3, MgF2 and AlF3) were tested In order to compare their influence on the luminescence property and particle size distribution of CeMgAl11O19: Tb3+. The result shows that when the content of MgF2 is 0.1 mol/mol, the intensity of luminescence can attain a maximum. Furthermore, MgF2 can improve the particle size quality of the phosphor. So MgF2 can take the place of the conventional flux H3BO3 to prepare high quality CeMgAl11O19: Tb3+ phosphor. In addition, the relation between phosphor property and content of AlF3 was also studied. The crystal structure of the phosphor was analyzed by XRD method. The phase coniposition analysis shows that the reason of decrease of the brightness of CeMgAl11O19: Tb3+ phosphor is the emergence of TbAlO3 and alpha-Al2O3 during the preparation process.
Structural and functional relationships of enzyme activities induced by nitrate in barley.

Abstract:1. Nitrate induces the development of NADH-nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1), FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase and NADH-cytochrome c reductase activities in barley shoots. 2. Sucrose-density-gradient analysis shows one band of NADH-nitrate reductase (8S), one band of FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase activity (8S) and three bands of NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity (bottom layer, 8S and 3.7S). Both 8S and 3.7S NADH-cytochrome c reductase activities are inducible by nitrate, but the induction of the 8S band is much more marked. 3. The 8S NADH-cytochrome c reductase band co-sediments with both NADH-nitrate reductase activity and FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase activity. Nitrite reductase activity (4.6S) did not coincide with the activity of either the 8S or the 3.7S NADH-cytochrome c reductase. 4. FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase activity is more stable (t((1/2)) 12.5min) than either NADH-nitrate reductase activity (t((1/2)) 0.5min) or total NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity (t((1/2)) 1.5min) at 45 degrees C. 5. NADH-cytochrome c reductase and NADH-nitrate reductase activities are more sensitive to p-chloromercuribenzoate than is FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase activity. 6. Tungstate prevents the formation of NADH-nitrate reductase and FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase activities, but it causes superinduction of NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity. Molybdate overcomes the effects of tungstate. 7. The same three bands (bottom layer, 8S and 3.7S) of NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity are observed irrespective of whether induction is carried out in the presence or absence of tungstate, but only the activities in the 8S and 3.7S bands are increased. 8. The results support the idea that NADH-nitrate reductase, FMNH(2)-nitrate reductase and NADH-cytochrome c reductase are activities of the same enzyme complex, and that in the presence of tungstate the 8S enzyme complex is formed but is functional only with respect to NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity.

Abstract:In the process of treating cerium fluorocarbon-cerium lanthanide mixed rare earth concentrates by sulfuric acid roasting method, a large amount of waste leach residue containing iron, rare earths and phosphorus produced by flood neutralization needs to be solved urgently. In this paper, sodium carbonate roasting decomposition was used to treat the water leach residue, in which iron and rare earths were transformed into oxides, and the phosphorus was transformed into sodium phosphate. The main reactions and thermodynamic mechanisms of the roasting decomposition process were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, phase analysis and chemical analysis. When the mass ratio of sodium carbonate to water leach residue is 1.5:1, the roasting temperature is 700 °C, and the roasting time is 1.5 h, the leaching rate of phosphorus with the roasted product reaches more than 98%. Meanwhile, the phase of the roasted product after washing mainly consists of iron oxide and rare earth oxides. The combination of sodium carbonate roasting decomposition and water leaching is effective for the treatment of water leach residue, which provides an experimental and theoretical basis for solving the problem of environmental and resource waste caused by the accumulation of a large amount of water leach residue. In addition, because sodium carbonate can achieve the separation of iron and phosphorus, this method also has certain reference value for the recovery and utilization of iron phosphate in lithium iron phosphate battery waste.

Abstract:Preparation of CaYAl3O7:Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphors by sot-gel process and their luminescence properties were investigated. The energy transfer efficiencies between Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions resulted in strong emission of Tb3+ ions by 360 nm light as excitation source. The CaYAl3O7:0.03Ce(3+),0.19Tb(3+) phosphors which were sintered for at 900 degrees C 6 h in reducing atmosphere can emit stronger blue-green light.

Abstract:This research introduced a pretreatment process -mechanical activation- for extracting rare earth elements (REE) from waste trichromatic phosphors separated from e-waste. The effects of mechanical activation on the physicochemical properties of waste trichromatic phosphors were investigated using multiple methods by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement (BET), particle size analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that mechanical activation has noticeable effects on the microstructure of waste trichromatic phosphors. Increasing the rotational speed could cause the changes of S-A, structural defects, and breakage of the crystalline network, which could significantly improve in REE extraction rates. Specifically, changes in the crystalline degree of disorder caused by mechanical activation played a crucial role in enhancing the REE leachability from waste trichromatic phosphors. In addition, the sulfuric acid leaching behaviors of the activated waste trichromatic phosphors were studied by varying several parameters, including leaching time, liquid-to-solid ratio, acid concentration, heating temperature, and various activation conditions: Y, Eu, and Ce recovery rates reached approximately 96.3%, 91.1%, and 77.3%, respectively, from waste trichromatic phosphors activated for 60 min at the rotational speed of 550 rpm (by ball mill) compared with 46.7%, 42.3%, and 31.2%, respectively, from the raw sample. Abstract:In this paper, an efficient recovery of rare earth elements from waste fluorescent phosphors has been reported and the novel process of alkali fusion and acid leaching has been proposed. The experimental results have shown that the key for efficient recycling is the complete dissolution of waste fluorescent phosphors. The Na2O2-to-waste mass ratio, calcination temperature and reactive time play considerable roles in rare earth elements extraction during the alkali fusion process. The optimal conditions in terms of temperature, time and Na2O2-to-waste mass ratio are 650 °C, 15 min and 2:1, respectively, under which more than 99.5 % rare earth elements are extracted. The possible reaction mechanism of alkali fusion has been proposed.

Abstract:With the rapidly expanding use of fluorescent lamps (FLs) and increasing interest in conservation and sustainable utilization of critical metals such as rare earth elements (REEs), the recovering of REEs from phosphors in waste FLs is becoming a critical environmental and economic issue. To effectively recycle REEs with metallurgical methods, mechanical activation by ball milling was introduced to pretreat the waste phosphors. This current study put the emphasis on the mechanical activation and leaching processes for REEs and explored the feasibility of the method from both theoretical and practical standpoints. Results showed physicochemical changes of structural destruction and particle size reduction after mechanical activation, leading to the easy dissolution of REEs in the activated samples. Under optimal conditions, dissolution yields of 89.4%, 93.1% and 94.6% for Tb, Eu and Y, respectively, were achieved from activated waste phosphors using hydrochloric acid as the dissolution agent. The shrinking core model proved to be the most applicable for the leaching procedure, with an apparent activation energy of 10.96 ± 2.79 kJ/mol. This novel process indicates that mechanical activation is an efficient method for recovering REEs from waste phosphors and it has promising potential for REE recovery with low cost and high efficiency.

Abstract:Phosphorus flue dust (PFD) is a solid waste product from phosphorus (P) production that contains P and is enriched with gallium (Ga). The recovery of these valuable components not only protects the environment, but also reduces resource waste. This study aimed to develop a green and efficient method to recover P and enriched Ga from PFD. The effects of different parameters on the P leaching rate and Ga loss rate during Na2CO3 roasting and water leaching were investigated and optimized. The reaction mechanisms during the experiment were characterized, revealing that the P-containing compounds in PFD mainly transformed into water-soluble Na3PO4. Furthermore, the leaching rate of P reached 85.38%, while Ga was mainly concentrated in the residue and its loss rate was only about 1%. Ga content in the residue reached about 0.1%. An attempt was made to recover Na+ and PO43- from the aqueous solution by evaporative crystallization and XRD analysis showed that the main phase of the crystallization product was Na2HPO4. The proposed process is technically simple, only Na2CO3 is added and no hazardous substances are generated, and represents a new method for recovering P and enriching Ga from PFD.

Abstract:In this work, veritable carbothermal synthesis of SrAlSi4N7:Eu2+ red-emitting phosphors using entire oxides raw materials and the elimination of residual carbon survived in materials via non-thermal plasma oxidation route are demonstrated. The crystal structure and photoluminescent properties of carbothermal-synthesized SrAlSi4N7:Eu2+ phosphors and the residual carbon elimination effect of non-thermal plasma oxidation are investigated in detail. Experiment results show that the residual carbon survived in carbothermal-synthesized SrAlSi4N7:Eu2+ phosphors could be eliminated effectively by non-thermal plasma oxidation, leading to the significant enhancement of luminescent properties. The presented work affords an economic carbothermal reduction method to synthesize nitride phosphors using low cost entire oxides raw materials and recommends a promising approach to eliminate the residual carbon in carbothermal-synthesized materials.

Abstract:This paper presents the biological inspiration and core idea of healer reinforcement of self-healing in smart grid. First, the self-healing system in human is briefly studied for mild wound-healing, followed by the similar FLISR (fault location, isolation and service restoration) process in distribution automation of smart grid. An analogy is expressed between selfhealing in human wound-healing and FLISR, both performed in four phases. The healer reinforcement idea is then introduced, which is inspired by immune system boosting. Realizations of the healer reinforcement notion are introduced at the end as practical examples.

Abstract:Particle size reduction of Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce) phosphor is highly needed for Micro-LED display applications. In this work, size control of Y3Al5O12:Ce phosphor particles is achieved via carbon coating and further heat treatment. A thin layer of carbon is deposited on the surface of Y3Al5O12:Ce by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). During the heat treatment, carbon reacted with oxygen element in the phosphor and escape from phosphor particles. The reaction results in the phosphor breaking into smaller particles. The phosphors are characterized by laser light scattering for particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphologies, XRD refinements for crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) for elemental analysis. It is demonstrated that the median diameter (D50) of the phosphor particle size has been significantly reduced from 19.1 to 0.96 μm yet the photoluminescent properties have little changes. The carbon coating and further heat treatment method shows potential application in size control of phosphors.Combination of nanoscale carbon deposition and chemical breakdown effect results in the breakup of large YAG:Ce particles. Abstract:As a promising replacement for nitride red phosphors, Ce: Y3(Mg1.8Al1.4Si1.8)O12(Ce: YMASG) ceramic phosphors have attracted significant attention recently for their advantages in inorganic encapsulation and massive red‐shifting of Ce3+ emission. In this work, Ce: YMASG with different doping concentrations of Ce3+ and Al2O3, was fabricated by vacuum sintering to investigate its effects on the elimination of the impurity phase and the enhancement of the luminescent properties of white light‐emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). It was discovered that the emission wavelength redshifts from 592 nm to 606 nm as the Ce3+ concentration increases, while at 450 K, the emission intensity deteriorates from 0.47 to 0.36 of its initial value. The Rietveld analysis revealed the presence of an impurity phase of Y4MgSi3O13 with a concentration of 17.021 wt% in Ce: YMASG. With the introduction of Al2O3, the impurity phase was eliminated from the matrix completely, the emission peak shifted to a shorter wavelength, and the thermal stability was greatly improved. When the correlated color temperature was controlled at around 3000 K in the packaged w‐LEDs, the commission international de l'éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates shifted toward the bottom left corner of the diagram with increasing concentration of Ce3+. Conversely, the luminous efficiency (LE) increased from 36 lm/W to 58.6 lm/W as the concentration of Al2O3 increased from 0 to 10 wt%, which demonstrated the application prospect of the fabricated phosphor in warm w‐LEDs.

Abstract:With the target of recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic leachates, a new functionalized hydrogel was designed, based on the phosphorylation of algal/polyethyleneimine beads. The functionalization strongly increased the sorption efficiency of the raw material for Pr(III) and Tm(III). Diverse techniques were used for characterizing this new material and correlating the sorption performances and mechanisms to the physicochemical structure of the sorbent. First, the work characterized the sorption properties from synthetic solutions with the usual procedures (study of pH effect, uptake kinetics, sorption isotherms, metal desorption and sorbent recycling, and selectivity from multi-element solutions). Optimum pH was found close to 5; sorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir equation (maximum sorption capacities close to 2.14 mmol Pr g−1 and 1.57 mmol Tm g−1). Fast uptake kinetics were modeled by the pseudo-second order rate equation. The sorbent was highly selective for REEs against alkali-earth and base metals. The sorbent was remarkably stable for sorption and desorption operation (using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2 solutions). The sorbent was successfully applied to the leachates of Egyptian ore (pug leaching) after a series of pre-treatments (precipitation steps), sorption, and elution. The selective precipitation of REEs using oxalic acid allows for the recovery of a pure REE precipitate.

Abstract:Ce3+ activated terbium aluminum garnet ((Tb1-xCex)(3)Al5O12, 0 <= x <= 0.05) phosphors have been converted from their precursors synthesized via co-precipitation from mixed solutions of aluminum and rare earth nitrates with ammonium hydrogen carbonate (AHC) as the precipitant. Detailed characterizations of the precursors and the phosphor oxides were performed by the combined techniques of X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The co-precipitated precursors possess a general composition of (NH4)(x)(Tb,Ce)(3)Al-5(CO3)(y)(OH)(z)center dot nH(2)O, and the particles, having diameters of about 50nm, are well dispersed. Calcining the precursors at 1000 degrees C for 4 h in the air and then reducing in a hydrogen atmosphere at 1000 degrees C for 2 h yielded a phase-pure garnet solid-solution of (Tb1-xCex)(3)Al5O12. The cubic lattice of garnet allows the Ce3+ activators to reside at the dodecahedral interstitial sites. The resultant garnet phosphors with various Ce3+ contents exhibit nearly identical positions of the PLE/PE bands, but significantly different intensities. Upon blue-light excitation at 470nm, the garnet phosphors exhibit broad band emissions peaking at 560nm. The garnet phosphors show a luminescence quenching concentration of 1.5at% for Ce3+.

Abstract:Abstractα-Al2O3 powders with different morphologies, namely fibrous, sheet-like, and spherical, were prepared by the hydrothermal-thermolysis method. Subsequently, polycrystalline, transparent cerium doped lutetium aluminum garnet (Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+) green phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid-state method using commercial lutetium(III) oxide, cerium(III) oxide, and as-prepared Al2O3 powders with different morphologies. The phases, morphologies, and photoluminescent properties of the prepared phosphors were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy(PL). Moreover, the influences of the morphologies of α-Al2O3 on the types of crystal structure, morphologies, and photoluminescent properties of LuAG:Ce3+ green phosphors were investigated. The results indicated that the morphologies and particle sizes of the α-Al2O3 powders could be controlled by the additives and parameters. Notably, the spherical α-Al2O3 powders with good dispersibility were found to be the excellent base materials of LuAG:Ce3+ green phosphors for white light emitting diodes.

Abstract:A novel color tunable phosphor was developed by a high-temperature solid-state reaction route with apatite-type Ca8NaGd(PO4)6F2 (CNGF) as matrix for the doping with Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The crystal structures were studied by XRD and Rietveld refinement, which clarified the structural parameters and the occupation of doped ions in crystal lattice. The luminescent intensity of Tb3+ ions was significantly improved by the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. According to the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+, a possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed. Fluorescent paper was prepared by binding the CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor particles with bacterial cellulose, and the morphology and luminescence properties of the paper were investigated. These results demonstrate that the obtained CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ is a promising green phosphor candidate for solid-state lighting and anti-counterfeiting applications.
