Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the effect of surface treatment on bonding strength between pure titanium formed by selective laser melting and porcelain.METHODS:Pure titanium strips (64) and cobalt-chromium alloy strips (16) were laser machined to meet ISO 9693 standards. The pure titanium specimens were divided into 4 groups according to the sandblasting pressure and interlayer material. The sandblasting pressure of 0.25 MPa of bonder porcelain group was TB1, the sandblasting pressure of 0.25 MPa of gold coating group was TG1, the sandblasting pressure of 0.45 MPa of bonder porcelain group was TB2, and the sandblasting pressure of 0.45 MPa of the gold coating group was TG2(n=16). After porcelain fusing, half of the specimens in each group were tested for three-point bend bonding strength, and the other half were tested after 10 000 cycles of thermal cycling(n=8). The bonding strength of cobalt-chromium alloy after sandblasting at 0.25 MPa and 0.45 MPa was taken as the control group and recorded as group C1, C2(n=8). The bonding strength was tested using classical three-point bending experiment. The surface roughness of pure titanium was measured by laser scanning confocal microscope(LSCM). Field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) was used to observe the interface morphology of titanium-ceramic. The surface morphology of titanium after porcelain stripping was observed with stereomicroscope and fracture modes were analyzed by it. Graphpad Prism 8.0 software package was used for statistical analysis of the data.RESULTS:The bonding strength of group TG2 was (40.16±3.97) MPa and (37.38±2.39) MPa of group TG1, which were significantly higher than that of group TB2 (36.32±1.44) MPa and group TB1 (33.75±2.31) MPa (P＜0.05). The bonding strength of group TB2 with 0.45 MPa sandblasting was significantly higher than that of group TB1 with 0.25 MPa sandblasting (P＜0.05). There was no significant decrease in titanium-ceramic bonding strength before and after thermal cycling. When the sandblasting pressure increased from 0.25 MPa to 0.45 MPa, the roughness increased significantly (P＜0.05). The fracture modes were mixed.CONCLUSIONS:Under the conditions of this study, gold coating can significantly improve the bonding strength of Ti22 porcelain and SLM pure titanium than bonder porcelain, and increase of sandblasting pressure can further improve the bonding strength of titanium-porcelain. After 10 000 cycles of thermal cycling, the titanium-porcelain bonding strength did not decrease significantly.
SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION INCREASES INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY DURING EXPERIMENTAL HUMAN ENDOTOXEMIA

Abstract:Although the gut is often considered the motor of sepsis, the relation between systemic inflammation and intestinal permeability in humans is not clear. We analyzed intestinal permeability during experimental endotoxemia in humans. Before and during experimental endotoxemia (Escherichia coli LPS, 2 ng/kg), using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a permeability marker, intestinal permeability was analyzed in 14 healthy subjects. Enterocyte damage was determined by intestinal fatty acid binding protein. Endotoxemia induced an inflammatory response. Urinary PEGs 1,500 and 4,000 recovery increased from 38.8 ± 6.3 to 63.1 ± 12.5 and from 0.58 ± 0.31 to 3.11 ± 0.93 mg, respectively (P < 0.05). Intestinal fatty acid binding protein excretion was not affected by endotoxemia. The peak serum IL-10 concentrations correlated with the increase in PEG 1,500 recovery (r = 0.48, P = 0.027). Systemic inflammation results in an increased intestinal permeability. The increase in intestinal permeability is most likely caused by inflammation-induced paracellular permeability, rather than ischemia-mediated enterocyte damage.

Abstract:We present the absolute frequency measurement of the transition 1S<inf>0</inf> – 3P<inf>0</inf> at 578 nm in ytterbium 171 realized in an optical lattice frequency standard relative to the cryogenic caesium fountain ITCsF2. The measurement result is 518 295 836 590 863.59(31) Hz with a relative standard uncertainty of 5.9 × 10−16. A contribution of 1.6 × 10−16 is coming from the ytterbium clock and we are working to reduce this contribution to the 1 × 10−17 level.
Does the Serological Study for Viral Infection in Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease Make Sense?

Abstract:Viral infections of the labyrinth have been considered a major source of auditory and vestibular system pathology. However, the involvement of virus in the development of immune reactions responsible for immunomediated inner ear disease has not been studied enough. Following viral infection, an effector immune response, humoral (B cell) and/or cytotoxic (T cell) is directed against a virus and it might cross-react with self-protein or autoantigen, evoking an autoimmune response. Since clinically it can be very difficult to establish a viral etiology for such disorders, serologic studies can be used to confirm the suspected diagnosis. Patients affected by immunomediated inner ear disease that had presented an upper respiratory tract infection underwent an immunologic workup study including microbiological study. After the application of this diagnostic protocol, only one patient, that was subsequently diagnosed with Cogan’s syndrome, showed a positive serological test for viral infection. On the basis of the low efficacy of serological testing and due to the lack of evidence, we do not recommend to carry out serologic studies for viral infection.
Adhesion of veneering porcelain to cobalt-chromium dental alloys processed with casting, milling, and additive manufacturing methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Statement of problem: Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) technologies provide an alternative to conventional casting and milling procedures in fabricating metal-ceramic dental prostheses. However, the quality of porcelain bond strength to the SLM AM cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) metal framework of a dental restoration is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify in vitro studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM AM Co-Cr dental metal alloys and compare the porcelain bond strength values to cast, milled, and additively manufactured Co-Cr dental alloys. Material and methods: An electronic systematic review was performed in different databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, World of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus. A manual search was also conducted. Studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM Co-Cr metal alloys and in the English language were included. Two investigators evaluated the quality assessment of the studies by applying the JBI critical appraisal checklist for quasi-experimental studies (nonrandomized experimental studies). A third investigator was consulted to resolve lack of consensus. Two subgroups were created based on the test used, 3-point bend and shear bond strength tests. The porcelain bond strength of cast, milled, and AM Co-Cr dental alloys were compared. The I2 statistic and its associated P value were used to assess the heterogeneity between studies. The Eger test was used for determining significance of the funnel pots. Results: A total of 216 studies were collected from the electronic and manual searches. After independently evaluating the titles and abstracts by the reviewers, 26 articles were identified. Three of these were excluded after full-text revision. The porcelain bond strength comparison between the cast and AM alloys for the 3-point bend subgroup revealed a significant result for overall effect (P<.001) favoring the SLM method with considerable heterogeneity (I2=83%, P<.001). Furthermore, the porcelain bond strength comparison between cast and milled alloys for the shear bond strength subgroup revealed a significant test for overall effect (P=.04) favoring milled procedures with a nonsignificant unimportant heterogeneity (I2= 0%, P<.47) and for the 3-point bend subgroup (P<.001) favoring milled specimens with a significant considerable heterogeneity (I2=79%, P<.001). Conclusions: The metal manufacturing method had no effect on the porcelain bond strength to Co-Cr dental metal alloys.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of sandblasting on the shear bond strength and durability of three resin cements bonded to titanium. Methods Titanium in two sizes (φ5 mm×5 mm, φ4 mm×2 mm) were fabricated with titanium casting technology for dentistry, each size consisted of 96 specimens, and the two sizes were paired up to 96 pairs. The paired specimens were divided into the experiment group and the control group. The experiment group was sandblasted with 50 μm Al2 O3 particle,the control group was untreated. The paired titanium specimens were bonded by Super-Bond C&B ( SB) , Panavia F ( PF) and Rely X Unicem ( RU) , ac-cording to manufacturer’ s recommendations. The specimens were divided into 6 groups ( SB sandblasted, SB un-sandblasted, PF sand-blasted, PF un-sandblasted, RU sandblasted, RU un-sandblasted) , each of which consisted of 16 pairs of specimens. 8 pairs of each group were immersed in water bath at 37 ℃ for 24 hours, the other 8 pairs were treated with 5 000 cycles of thermocycling after being immersed in water at 37℃ for 24 hours. The shear bond strength was evaluated by the MTS testing machine. The values of each group were compared by two- factor ANOVA with interaction analysis. Results Before thermocycling, the shear bond strength of RU un-sandblasted group was the lowest, and the highest results were obtained in SB sandblasted group (28. 03±8. 40) MPa. After thermocy-cling, the highest strengths were obtained in PF sandblasted group (27. 12±8. 68) MPa, and the lowest results were obtained in RU un-sandblasted group. Before thermocycling, the shear bond strengths of SB sandblasted and SB un-sandblasted groups were statistical-ly different (P<0. 05), which was also true for RU sandblasted and RU un-sandblasted groups. After thermocycling, the results of RU sandblasted and RU un-sandblasted were still different (P<0. 05). Thermocycling statistically affected the shear bond strengths in SB sandblasted and SB un-sandblasted groups (P<0. 05). Other results were not statistically different (P>0. 05). Conclusion Sand-blasting can significantly increase the shear bond strength and durability of SB and RU bonded to titanium, but it isn’ t positively corre-lated with the shear bond strength and durability of all resin cements bonded to titanium.

Abstract:Background: Developing efficient bonding techniques for orthodontic brackets and all-ceramic materials continues to pose a clinical difficulty. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strengths (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets to various all-ceramic CAD-CAM materials, such as lithium disilicate CAD (LDS-CAD), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PIC), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (ZLS), and 5YTZP zirconia after different surface treatments and thermal cycling. Materials and methods: The samples were divided into two groups to be bonded with ceramic and metal lower incisor brackets. Each group was subdivided into a control group devoid of any surface treatment, 10% HF acid (HFA) etching, ceramic etch & prime (MEP), Al2O3 air abrasion, and medium grit diamond bur roughening. After surface treatment, brackets were bonded with composite resin cement, thermal cycled, and tested for shear bond strength. The failed surfaces were evaluated with a digital microscope to analyse the type of failure. The data were statistically analysed using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. Results: The highest mean bond strengths were found with HFA etching in LDS-CAD (13.17 ± 0.26 MPa) and ZLS (12.85 0.52 MPa). Diamond bur recorded the lowest mean bond strength roughening across all the ceramic groups. There were significant differences in mean shear bond values per surface treatment (p < 0.001) and ceramic materials. Conclusion: Among the surface treatment protocols evaluated, HFA etching and MEP surface treatment resulted in enhanced bond strength of both ceramic and metal brackets to CAD-CAM all ceramic materials.
Effects of heat treatment on the bonding strength of pure titanium processed via selective laser melting and porcelain

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of heat treatment on the bonding strength of pure titanium formed by selective laser melting (SLM) and porcelain. Methods Ninety-six pure titanium specimens were laser machined to meet ISO 9693 standards. The specimens were divided into a heat treated group (A) and a nonheat treated group (B). According to the porcelain type, the specimens in groups A and B were divided into Super Ti22 (a), Titankeramik (b), and Triceram (c) groups. Then, according to sandblasting pressures of 0.25 MPa (1) and 0.45 MPa (2), they were further divided into Aa1, Aa2, Ab1, Ab2, Ac1, Ac2, Ba1, Ba2, Bb1, Bb2, Bc1, and Bc2 groups. The surface morphology and roughness of the sandblasted specimens were assessed using a laser scanning confocal microscope. After the porcelain was fused, the three-point bending titanium-porcelain bonding strength was tested. A stereomicroscope was used to characterize the titanium-porcelain interfaces and determine the mode of failure. Results The Vickers hardness of group A specimens (188.21 ± 11.94) was significantly lower than that of group B specimens (204.48 ± 6.32) HV (P<0.05). The roughness value in group A1 (2.90 ± 0.32) μm was significantly lower than that in group A2 (3.43 ± 0.43) μm (P<0.05). Specimens in group B1 (2.62 ± 0.08) μm were significantly smaller than those in group B2 (3.01 ± 0.06) μm (P<0.05). The bonding strength in group Aa1 was (33.75 ± 2.31) MPa, group Aa2 was (36.32 ± 1.44) MPa, group Ab1 was (39.82 ± 2.28) MPa, group Ab2 was (33.74 ± 1.53) MPa and group Ac2 was (38.63 ± 1.36) MPa, which was significantly higher than that in the corresponding groups Ba1 (29.65 ± 1.10) MPa, Ba2 (27.17 ± 2.24) MPa, Bb1 (27.29 ± 1.61) MPa, Bb2 (23.85 ± 0.97) MPa, and Bc2 (35.75 ± 1.93) MPa (P<0.05). With increasing sandblasting pressure, the bonding strength of the titanium ceramic in group Aa2 was significantly higher than in group Aa1, while that in group Ab2 was significantly lower than that in group Ab1 (P<0.05). In groups A, Bc1 and Bc2, the fracture model showed mixed failure, while in groups Ba1, Ba2, Bb1, and Bb2, the model showed interfacial failure. Conclusion The Vickers hardness of SLM titanium can be significantly reduced by heat treatment. SLM pure titanium after heat treatment is beneficial to combination of the three porcelain types and titanium. The titanium-porcelain bonding strength may be affected by sandblasting pressure.
Effect of various surface treatments on relining bond strength of CAD‐CAM denture base materials

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of various surface treatments and production methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) between reline material and denture base resins. Materials and Methods One‐hundred‐twenty specimens were produced using conventional heat‐polymerization, subtractive, and additive techniques. Each group consisted of 40 specimens. The specimens were divided into four subgroups, each with 10 samples, for surface treatments. These subgroups were: (1) Control‐only monomer application, (2) 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion, (3) 110 μm airborne‐particle abrasion, and (4) Roughening with tungsten carbide bur. Representative specimens from each subgroup were examined under SEM. Then, auto‐polymerized resin was condensed in the center of the specimens. Specimens were subjected to thermal aging (5000 cycles at 5–55°C). The SBS test was conducted and failure loads were recorded. The data were evaluated by two‐way ANOVA and Tukey pairwise multiple comparisons method (p < 0.05). Results The additively produced group showed significantly lower SBS than conventional and subtractive groups (p < 0.001), with no significant differences between the subtractive and conventional groups. Specimens that underwent monomer application only showed the lowest SBS among surface treatments, while 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion showed the highest SBS. Based on the partial eta‐squared analysis results, the surface treatment mainly impacted SBS. Conclusions Among the surface treatment methods, treating denture bases with 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion is more effective for maintaining adhesion, especially in the additive technique.

Improving the bonding stability between resin cements and zirconia-based ceramic using different surface treatments

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effects of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles or silicamodified alumina particles on the bond strength between zirconia and conventional MDP-based (Ph; Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray) or self-adhesive (SA; RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) resin cements. Materials and methods: Five surface treatments were evaluated: C = no surface treatment; AB = airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles (BIO-ART Dental Supplies and Equipment); ABP = AB combined with MDP-based primer (Alloy Primer, Kuraray); SS = airborne-particle abrasion with silica-modified alumina particles (CoJet, 3M ESPE) combined with silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE); and SSP = SS combined with MDP-based primer. The surface roughness (Ra) of the airborne particle-abraded samples (n = 5) was measured by a contact profilometer (Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-401, Mitutoyo). Cylinders of the resin cements tested were bonded to the surface-treated zirconia. The microshear test was performed by the application of a load with a wire loop parallel to the adhesive interface until debonding of the resin cement cylinders. The microshear bond strength (μSBS) of the samples was measured before and after being subjected to thermocycling (TC; 5°C to 55°C, 60 seconds dwell time for 3,000 cycles; MSCT, Marcelo Nucci). One-way (Ra) and two-way (μSBS) analysis of variance followed by Tukey post hoc test (α = .05) were used. Results: The SS (Ph: 12.6 MPa; Ph-TC: 6.37 MPa; SA: 11.8 MPa; SA-TC: 9.37) and SSP (Ph: 10.4 MPa; Ph-TC: 5.82 MPa; SA: 10.4 MPa; SA-TC: 10.0) surface treatments produced the highest surface roughness values (P < .001). The SS samples achieved the highest immediate bond strength for both resin cements. However, after TC, SA resin cement associated with any surface treatment produced the highest bond strength values. Conclusion: The self-adhesive resin cement promoted higher and more stable bond strength values when associated with a surface roughening method.
Effect of Surface Textures and Fabrication Methods on Shear Bond Strength Between Titanium Framework and Auto-Polymerizing Acrylic Repair Resin

Abstract:The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of airborne particle abrasion (using different sizes of alumina particles) on the shear bond strength (SBS) between cast and milled titanium metal frameworks and auto-polymerizing acrylic repair resin. Forty flat cylindrical titanium disks were divided into two main divisions: cast and milled titanium. The two divisions were further subdivided into four groups based on metal surface treatment. Three particle sizes of aluminum oxide air abrasive powders (50µm, 110µm, and 250µm) were used for metal surface treatment by airborne particle abrasion. One group was the control group with no surface treatment. Auto-polymerizing acrylic repair resin was applied to all titanium disks. The specimens were subjected to SBS testing using a universal testing machine (Instron Corporation, Norwood, Massachusetts, United States). Surface evaluation was performed using a scanning electron microscope. One-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. The results showed a significant increase in SBS after airborne particle abrasion of both milled and cast titanium groups (p<0.001). The SBS was directly proportional to the size of the aluminum oxide particles. The milled titanium group showed higher SBS values than the cast group when the surface was not treated with alumina particles (p < 0.001) and when the surface was treated with the smaller particle sizes of 50 µm, whereas the cast group demonstrated higher SBS values than the milled group (p < 0.01) when the particle size was increased to 110 µm and 250 µm. It could be concluded that SBS between titanium metal frameworks and auto-polymerizing repair acrylic resin was directly related to the size of the alumina airborne particle abrasives. The fabrication method of the titanium framework also influenced the SBS as the untreated milled frameworks demonstrated favorable SBS values compared to the untreated cast frameworks.
Effect of Selective Laser Melting Pure Titanium on Bond Strength of Titanium to Composite Resin by Different Surface Treatments

Abstract:Objective: To study the effectiveness of different surface treatments such as sandblasting and/or acid etching on the bond strength of selective laser melting pure titanium to composite resin. Methods: According to the ISO10477 standard, ninety-six selective laser melting pure titanium specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated as follows: Group A1: grinding; Group B1: Sandblasting; Group C1: 4% hydrofluoric acid etching（HF）; Group D1: 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting（n=24）. Ninety-six forged titanium specimens from different processing technique were taken as the control groups, and the same surface treatments were done and recorded as A2, B2, C2, and D2（n=24）. After the surface treatments, a laser scanning confocal microscope was used to observe the surface morphology and roughness, the bond strength tests were carried out before and after the thermal cycles, and the mode of failures were observed by a stereo microscope. Results: The grinding group has the lowest roughness and the roughness of 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting was lower than that of sandblasting group（P＜0.05）. The bond strength of 4% HF acid etching after sandblasting group was about 4 times higher than that of grinding group（P＜0.05）, and the bond strength of the selective laser melting pure titanium specimens were（19.68±2.87） mPa and forged titanium specimens were（17.20±2.60） mPa. The bond strength between titanium and composite resin did not decrease significantly before and after the thermal cycling（P＞0.05）, and the durability was good. The fracture mode was mainly mixed fracture. Conclusion: Acid etching after sandblasting can effectively improve the strength of titanium to composite resin, which is one of the ideal methods for surface modification of selective laser melting titanium. It can significantly improve the bonding strength with composite resin and have good durability and can prolong the service life of the restoration to a certain extent at the same time. Selective laser melting titanium is a promising processing technology that can replace the traditional production of titanium for clinical applications.
Effect of surface finish and resin cement on the bond strength to CAD-CAM ceramics for interim resin-bonded prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Resin-bonded prostheses, including interim resin-bonded prostheses, are effective in preserving tooth structure compared with other types of fixed dental prostheses for the replacement of missing teeth. However, loss of retention remains a notable concern with these types of prostheses. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the influence of glass-ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish on the shear bond strength (SBS) to the CAD-CAM ceramics used to fabricate interim resin-bonded prostheses. Material and methods: Eighty 10×2-mm glass-ceramic disks were fabricated by using a diamond saw (IsoMet 1000), 40 from feldspathic porcelain blocks (Vita Mark II) and 40 from lithium disilicate blocks (IPS e.max CAD). Half of the specimens in each group were left with a dull or matte surface finish after cutting, while the other half were glazed with an add-on glaze (VitaAkzento Plus Glaze Spray and IPS e.max CAD Glaze Spray, respectively). The disks were mounted in acrylic resin, and each group was subdivided into 2, with 1 receiving a photopolymerized resin cement (RelyX Veneer) and the other receiving a flowable composite resin (Filtek Supreme Ultimate Flow) to form 2.38×2-mm cylinders. SBS was determined using a universal testing machine (Instron 4411) in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022:2013 standard, and failure modes were analyzed by using a stereomicroscope with ×40 magnification. The data were analyzed with a 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc analysis. The chi-squared test was used to analyze the failure mode (α=.05 for all tests). Results: Ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish significantly impacted SBS (P<.001, P=.003, P<.001, respectively). Lithium disilicate showed higher SBS than feldspathic porcelain, and flowable composite resin exhibited higher SBS than resin cement. Glazed surfaces displayed lower SBS compared with the dull or matte surfaces. The combinations among the 3 materials also impacted SBS (P=.03). In addition, the combinations between ceramic type and surface finish affected SBS (P<.001), regardless of resin cement type. No other combinations affected the SBS (P>.05). The mode of failure was different among the groups (P<.001). In comparison with all other groups, cohesive failures were most prevalent in feldspathic porcelain with a dull or matte surface finish, regardless of the resin type used. Conclusions: The SBS to glass-ceramics was influenced by ceramic material, resin cement type, and surface finish. Flowable composite resin showed higher SBS than resin cement. A dull or matte surface finish exhibited greater bond strength than a glazed surface. Lithium disilicate had higher SBS than feldspathic porcelain.
Influence of additive and subtractive zirconia and lithium disilicate manufacturing on tensile bond strength and surface topography

Abstract:Statement of problem: Although bonding is important for long-term clinical success, studies on the bonding of additively manufactured ceramics are sparse. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of manufacturing methods, additive (LCM) versus subtractive (CAM). and ceramic materials, zirconia (ZrO2) and lithium disilicate (LiSi), on the tensile bond strength (TBS), failure mode, and surface roughness of ceramics. Material and methods: A total of 240 ceramic specimens (n=60/group; 2×2×10 mm) were prepared. Two additively manufactured (LCM-printed) ceramics, LiSi and ZrO2 (Lithoz), subtractively manufactured LiSi (IPS e.max CAD), and subtractively manufactured ZrO2 (KATANA Zirconia HTML PLUS) were evaluated. From each material, 40 specimens were bonded together (n=20 ceramic-ceramic specimens/group), and 20 specimens were bonded to equally sized human dentin specimens (n=20 ceramic-dentin specimens/group). The ZrO2 specimens were airborne-particle abraded (Al2O3, 50 µm, 0.1 MPa), and the LiSi specimens were etched with hydrofluoric acid. Then, a universal primer (Monobond Plus) was applied. After the dentin was coated with an etch-and-rinse adhesive (Syntac Classic), the specimens were bonded with luting composite resin (Variolink Esthetic DC), light polymerized for 40 seconds, thermally aged (10 000 cycles between 5 °C and 55 °C), tested for TBS, and statistically analyzed (1- and 3-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis). The ceramic surface was examined with scanning electron microscopy, and surface roughness was measured with digital microscopy before and after surface pretreatment. Results: TBS varied between 5.88 ±2.22 MPa and 6.34 ±2.26 MPa in the ceramic-dentin groups and 12.40 ±1.56 MPa and 18.82 ±5.92 MPa in the ceramic-ceramic groups. No significant difference was observed regarding the manufacturing method and material for different bonding conditions (P>.05). Additive and subtractive LiSi showed the highest reliability with m=18.27. The ceramic-ceramic specimens failed cohesively in the luting composite resin, whereas the ceramic-dentin specimens failed adhesively. Conclusions: The manufacturing method and material used had little effect on bond strength values or surface properties. The recently introduced printed materials performed similarly to conventionally milled materials.
Influence of 3D printed surface micro-structures on molding performance and dental bonding properties of zirconia

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of the 3D printed micro-structured surfaces on the bond strength of zirconia to resin cement.METHODS: Zirconia specimens were divided into five groups based on manufacturing technique and surface preparation: (1) milled zirconia (M group); (2) milled zirconia airborne abraded (MA group); (3) printed zirconia (M group); (4) printed zirconia airborne abraded (PA group); and (5) printed zirconia with micro-structured surface (PM group). The surface morphology, cross-sectional morphology, and elemental composition were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Surface roughness was measured using a laser scanning confocal microscope (SLCM). Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured using a universal testing machine after bonding resin cement (n = 10). The failure modes of the bonded fracture interfaces were observed and counted using a stereomicroscope and a SEM. In addition, boundary dimensional accuracy (n = 10) and micro-structural dimensional accuracy (n = 20) of printed zirconia specimens with micro-structured surfaces were measured using digital calipers and Fiji software. The crystalline phase changes before and after surface treatment were investigated using X-ray diffractometry. Data was analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc tests (α = 0.05).RESULT: The surface micro-structures of the PM group had regular morphology and no obvious defects. The surface roughness results showed that the PM group had higher Sa (42.21±1.38 um) and Ra (21.25±1.80 um) values than the other four groups (p < 0.001). The SBS test showed that the bond strength of the PM group reached 11.23 ± 0.66 MPa, which was 55.97% (p < 0.001) higher than that of the P group (7.20 ± 1.14 MPa). The boundary dimensional accuracy of the PM group was proficient (diameter: 99.63 ± 0.31%, thickness: 98.05 ± 1.12%), and the actual fabrication dimensions of the hexagonal micro-structures reached 77.45%-80.01% of the original design. The micro-structured surface did not affect the crystalline phase of zirconia.CONCLUSIONS: The current study illustrates that 3D-printed microstructured surfaces effectively improve the bond strength of zirconia to resin cements.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: With the advantage of 3D printing, this study provides a new idea for improving the bonding properties of zirconia.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Adaptation between abutment and suprastructure plays a crucial role in the long-term success of implant-supported metal-ceramic crowns. Fabrication methods, the porcelain firing stage, and cementation techniques may affect the marginal adaptation between the crown and abutment. However, the information regarding this issue is sparse. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare marginal fit after the fabrication of cobalt-chromium alloy copings, porcelain firing, and cementation of metal-ceramic restorations that were fabricated with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milling and direct metal laser sintering techniques. Material and methods: Thirty straight tissue-level titanium abutments were screwed onto implant analogs. All specimens were embedded in acrylic resin and divided into 2 groups according to CAD-CAM milling and direct metal laser sintering fabrication of the metal coping. Fifteen cobalt-chromium implant-supported metal copings were fabricated by using the CAD-CAM milling technique and 15 by using the direct metal laser sintering technique. In both groups, marginal gap measurements between the cobalt-chromium copings and abutments were obtained before (T0) and after the placement of the ceramic veneer (T1) and after cementation (T2) by using a stereomicroscope with a magnification of ×40. The data were statistically evaluated by using 2-way ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.05). A t test was used to determine whether there were significant differences between the fabrication techniques (α=.05). Results: A significant difference in the fabrication stages was found in the direct metal laser sintering group. The direct metal laser sintering coping group and porcelain applied direct metal laser sintering group had a statistically lower marginal gap value than the cemented direct metal laser sintering group (P=.021, P=.038). The direct metal laser sintering coping group had a lower marginal gap value than the CAD-CAM milling coping group, although the difference was not statistically significant (P=.216). Conclusions: Porcelain firing and cementation increased the marginal gap between the crown and abutment. No statistically significant differences were found between the direct metal laser sintering and CAD-CAM milling techniques in terms of marginal fit.
Surface preparation for orthodontic bonding to porcelain

Abstract:This study evaluated the effect of various porcelain surface treatments on the tensile strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to a feldspathic metal ceramic porcelain. The porcelain was fused to flat gold alloy tabs and divided into six groups that were subjected to sandblasting, silane application, intermediate resin, or etchants (9.6% hydrofluoric acid or 4% APF gels). Two brackets were bonded onto each porcelain/metal tab (n=60) with Bis-GMA resin (Concise, 3M Corp., St. Paul, Minn.) or 4-META resin (MCP-bond, Sun Medical Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). The samples were stored in 37 degrees C water, thermocycled 1000 times from 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C and tested in tension. Alignment and uniform loading during testing were secured by engaging a hook in a circular ring soldered onto the bracket slot before bonding. Similar control brackets (n=12) were bonded with Concise to extracted caries-free mandibular incisors. Bond failure sites were classified according to a modified Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) system. Silane application to the sandblasted porcelain surface significantly increased the bond strengths according to analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test. The quality of the bonds was further enhanced by the addition of the intermediate resin. Etching the porcelain with 9.6% hydrofluoric acid provided similar bond strengths, but the 4% APF gel was less effective. The MCP-bond was not significantly better than Concise in bond strength to sandblasted porcelain. Several difficulties associated with the clinical interpretation of laboratory data on bonding to dental porcelains are discussed, and clinical trials are necessary for final evidence of efficacy.
