Abstract:Radioactive technetium-99 (Tc) present in waste streams and subsurface plumes at legacy nuclear reprocessing sites worldwide poses potential risks to human health and environment. This research comparatively evaluated efficiency of zero-valent iron (ZVI) toward reductive removal of Tc(VII) in presence of Cr(VI) from NaCl and Na2SO4 electrolyte solutions under ambient atmospheric conditions. In both electrolytes, anticorrosive Cr(VI) suppressed oxidation of ZVI at elevated concentrations resulting in the delay of initiation of Tc(VII) reduction to Tc(IV). In the absence of Cr(VI), no delay was observed in the analogous systems. At low ionic strength (IS), retarded ZVI oxidation inhibited Tc(VII) reduction. Higher IS favored reduction of both Tc(VII) and Cr(VI), which followed second-order reaction rates in both electrolytes attributed to the more efficient iron oxidation as evident from solids characterization studies. Magnetite was the primary iron oxide phase, and its higher fraction in the SO42- solutions facilitated reductive removal of Tc(VII) and Cr(VI). In the Cl- matrix, Cr(VI) promoted further oxidation of magnetite as well as formation of chromite diminishing overall reductive capacity of this system and resulting in less effective removal of Tc(VII) compared to the SO42- solutions.

Abstract:The generalized Rossler hyperchaotic systems are presented, and the state observation problem of such systems is investigated. Based on the differential inequality with Lyapunov methodology (DIL methodology), a nonlinear observer design for the generalized Rossler hyperchaotic systems is developed to guarantee the global exponential stability of the resulting error system. Meanwhile, the guaranteed exponential decay rate can be accurately estimated. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed approach.

Abstract:The development of methods for the selective binding and separation of pertechnetate anion from aqueous solutions formed during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel remains an extremely urgent task. The lack of acceptable solutions of this problem has become one of the main obstacles to the development of nuclear energetics as one of the main sources of energy not related to emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This review discusses recent advances in the creation of effective and highly selective receptors on TcO 4 − , as well as extractants and sorbents allowing the binding of this anion in aqueous solutions, including in highly aggressive environments. Various approaches solving this problem are analyzed critically. They include precipitation and reductive precipitation of TcO 4 − , its extraction in two-phase water/organic solvent systems, methods of binding TcO 4 − on inorganic, composite and organic sorbents of different types, as well as the extraction and sorption characteristics used in this case. The collected data and the results of their discussion can contribute to a deeper understanding of ways to solve remaining unsolved problems in this area and planning directions for its further development.

Abstract:Environmental contamination by 99Tc(VII) from radioactive wastewater streams is of particular concern due to the long half-life of 99Tc and high mobility of pertechnetate. Herein, we report a novel MXene-polyelectrolyte nanocomposite with three-dimensional networks for enhanced removal of perrhenate, which is pertechnetate simulant. The introduction of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) regulates the surface charge and improves the stability of Ti2CT x nanosheet, resulting in Re(VII) removal capacity of up to 363 mg g-1, and fast sorption kinetics. The Ti2CT x/PDDA nanocomposite furthermore exhibits good selectivity for ReO4- when competing anions (such as Cl- and SO42-) coexist at a concentration of 1800 times. The immobilization mechanism was confirmed as a sorption-reduction process by batch sorption experiments and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The pH-dependent reducing activity of Ti2CT x/PDDA nanocomposite toward Re(VII) was clarified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. As the pH increases, the local environment gradually changes from octahedral-coordinated Re(IV) to tetrahedral-coordinated Re(VII). The overall results suggest that Ti2CT x/PDDA nanocomposite may be a promising candidate for efficient elimination of Tc contamination. The reported surface modification strategy might result in applications of MXene-based materials in environmental remediation of other oxidized anion pollutants.

Abstract:Technetium-99 (Tc), a high yield fission product generated in nuclear reactors, is one of the most difficult contaminants to address at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford, Savannah River, and other sites. In strongly alkaline solutions typifying Hanford tank waste, Tc exists as pertechnetate (TcO4-) (oxidation state VII) as well as in reduced forms (oxidation state < VII), collectively known as non-pertechnetate (non-TcO4-) species. Designing strategies for effective Tc management, including separation and immobilization, necessitates understanding the molecular structure of the non-TcO4- species and their identification in actual tank waste samples. Identification of non-TcO4- species would facilitate the development of new treatment technologies effective for dissimilar Tc species. Toward this objective, a spectroscopic library of the Tc(I) [fac-Tc(CO)3]+ and Tc(II, IV, V, VII) compounds was generated and applied to the characterization of the actual Hanford AN-102 tank waste supernatant, which was processed to adjust Na concentration to ∼5.6 M and remove 137Cs by spherical resorcinol-formaldehyde (sRF) ion-exchange resin. Post 137Cs removal, the cesium-loaded sRF column was eluted with 0.45 M HNO3. As-received AN-102, Cs-depleted effluent, and sRF eluate fractions were comprehensively characterized for chemical composition and speciation of Tc using 99Tc nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. It was demonstrated for the first time that non-TcO4- Tc present in the AN-102 tank waste is composed of several low-valent Tc species, including the Tc(I) [fac-Tc(CO)3]+ and Tc(IV) compounds. This is the first demonstration of multiple non-TcO4- species co-existing in the Hanford tank waste, highlighting their importance for the waste processing.

Abstract:Abstract Technetium is a radioactive contaminant found in groundwaters at sites where nuclear wastes have been processed or stored. The redox chemistry of technetium is a major control on its environmental mobility. Under oxic conditions, technetium exists as the pertechnetate ion, Tc(VII)O 4 − , which is poorly sorbed by minerals across a wide range of environmentally relevant pH values. Under reducing conditions pertechnetate is converted to lower valency species, of which Tc(IV) tends to predominate. Typically, the Tc(IV) oxidation state readily precipitates as insoluble hydrous Tc(IV) oxides or, at low concentrations, is removed from solution by association with mineral surfaces. Here, we present novel X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data examining Tc associations with reduced Dounreay soils. In reduced unamended microcosms and in microcosms where we added the co-contaminants ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or bicarbonate to investigate their effect on Tc biogeochemistry, Tc was removed from solution on exposure to the reduced sediments and was present on solids as hydrous Tc(IV)O 2 -like phases. Furthermore, to investigate the long term stability and remobilization of solid phase associated Tc in reduced soils, we reoxidized reduced, Tc(IV)-labeled soils, in the presence of air and nitrate. The extent of remobilization of Tc to solution was dependent on the oxidant used. After reoxidation with air for 60 d, (42±6)% of the initial soil bound Tc was resolubilized. In the presence of 25 or 100 mmol L −1 nitrate as an oxidant, negligible microcosm reoxidation or remobilization of Tc to solution occurred. XAS analysis of soils treated with the two oxidants showed that in both systems, the remaining soil associated Tc was present as hydrous TcO 2 -like phases. The recalcitrance of Tc remobilization under reoxidizing conditions has implications for the fate of Tc in contaminated environments.

Abstract:Background: In the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps (ICIDH), it is suggested that various levels of outcome are associated with one another. However, the ICIDH has been criticised on the grounds that it only represents a general, non-specific relation between its entities. Objective: To examine the significance of the ICIDH in immune mediated polyneuropathies. Methods: Four impairment measures (fatigue severity scale, MRC sum score, “INCAT” sensory sum score, grip strength with the Vigorimeter), five disability scales (nine hole peg test, 10 metres walking test, an overall disability sum score (ODSS), Hughes functional grading scale, Rankin scale), and a handicap scale (Rotterdam nine items handicap scale (RIHS9)) were assessed in 113 clinically stable patients (83 with Guillain–Barré syndrome, 22 with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, eight with a gammopathy related polyneuropathy). Regression analyses with backward and forward stepwise strategies were undertaken to determine the correlation between the various levels of outcome (impairment on disability, impairment on handicap, disability leading to handicap, and impairment plus disability on handicap). Results: Impairment measures explained a substantial part of disability (R2 = 0.64) and about half of the variance in handicap (R2 = 0.52). Disability measures showed a stronger association with handicap (R2 = 0.76). Combining impairment and disability scales accounted for 77% of the variance in handicap (RIHS9) scores. Conclusions: In contrast to some suggestions, support for the ICIDH model is found in the current study because significant associations were shown between its various levels in patients with immune mediated polyneuropathies. Further studies are required to examine other possible contributors to deficits in daily life and social functioning in these conditions.

Abstract:Three processes associated with DNA damage and genomic instability have been defined experimentally as operating during or soon after DNA replication: mismatch repair, post-replication repair and sister chromatid exchange. All these processes appear to operate on damage and/or errors in newly replicated DNA. Both mismatch repair and post-replication repair involve resynthesis of up to 1 kb of newly synthesized DNA: mismatch repair operates on single-base or slippage errors; post-replication repair operates on persistent gaps in newly synthesized DNA caused by damage on parental strands. Using colon cancer cells with different mismatch repair capacity, together with normal cells and excision-repair-defective and post-replication-repair-defective xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) cells, we analysed possible interactions between these processes. No evidence for overlap of mismatch repair with excision or post-replication repair was found. However, post-replication-repair-defective XP variant cells that were SV40 transformed showed higher UV-induced sister chromatid exchange frequencies than did untransformed cells. This suggests that sister chromatid exchanges in the XP variant are closely involved with UV-induced replication errors that are enhanced by transformation.
Improving Reductive Performance of Zero Valent Iron by H2O2/HCl Pretreatment: A Case Study on Nitrate Reduction

Abstract:This study demonstrates a simple method to prepare zero valent iron (ZVI)-based agent (prtZVI) with outstanding reducing power via pretreating ZVI with H2O2/HCl. Characterization of the prtZVI system with Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and chemical analysis indicates that it is a well dispersed system, containing nanosized solids such as ZVI, magnetite, Fe-II-associated iron oxides/(oxy) hydroxides, as well as soluble species like Fe2+ and Cl-. Highly effective reduction of nitrate (20 mg N/L initially) by prtZVI could be realized in a broad pH range (4-10), short reaction time, and at low solid dosage, which is much superior to ZVIs pretreated by H2O2, HCl, or NaCl alone and the traditional ZVI systems as well. Long-term storage of the prtZVI system (30 d) did not pose any negative effect on the nitrate reduction. N-15 isotopic analysis reveals that NH4+ is the major aqueous product (> 95%) and N-2 is the only gaseous one. Considering the outstanding reduction efficiency, simple synthesis, and long-term stability, the prtZVI system could serve as a promising ZVI technology for reductive removal of contaminants of concern.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Reduction of Aqueous Re(VII) in Ambient Air by Amorphous TiO2/g-C3N4 Photocatalysts: Implications for Tc(VII) Elimination

Abstract:Although effective photocatalytic removal for aqueous ReO4- (as a chemical analogue of TcO4-) have been established, photocatalysts are not satisfactory for further applications in term of low light harvesting efficiency and fast re-dissolution of ReO2 center dot nH(2)O. Herein, the amorphous TiO2/g-C3N4 composites are fabricated by a simple hydrolysis approach, producing the amorphous TiO2/30 wt% g-C3N4 (TCN-3) composite with larger specific surface area (similar to 456 m(2) g(-1)), narrow band gap (similar to 2.67 eV) and excellent light-capturing ability when compared with commercial P25. Lower recombination efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole based on the Z-scheme mechanism between amorphous TiO2 and g-C3N4 was demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance and photoelectrochemical analysis. In addition, the as-synthesized TCN-3 exhibits an excellent photocatalytic reduction of Re(VII) in ambient air with the highest removal percentage of similar to 90% as compared with crystalline TiO2/g-C3N4, and can be regenerated even after eight recycles. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the extremely slow re-dissolution of Re(IV) resulted from both shortening of ReO2 center dot nH(2)O chains (decrease in coordination number of Re-Re) and association of Re(IV) with amorphous TiO2 in TCN-3 (formation of Re-Ti bond). The overall results further facilitate the photocatalytic reduction and elimination for rhenium/technetium, and open the wide-range applications for photocatalysis in the disposal of some radioactive elements.
High-efficiency 99Tc separation from contaminated liquid waste using some anion exchange resins

Abstract:99Tc removal from contaminated aqueous solution was explored using some commercially available anion exchange resins with various specifications. Various combinations of physicochemical parameters like polymeric network, pore diameter, percent cross-linking, bead size etc. were selected to appraise their impact on 99Tc uptake. Fundamental extraction properties such as effect of solution pH, equilibration time, effect of temperature were determined for obtaining the optimum extraction condition. The resins were characterized using BET, SEM, EDS, XPS, TG, FTIR spectroscopy to decipher the structure-extraction correlation and extraction mechanism. In order to quantify the loading capacity (745 mg/g as maximum) and ascertain the reaction mechanism, non-radioactive surrogate of TcO4-, i.e, ReO4- have been used. ReO4- quantity in solution was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry with λmax at 204 nm. 4M HNO3 was found be an effective reagent towards desorption from the loaded resins. The capture performance was found to deteriorate with γ-radiation particularly at higher absorbed dose (500 kGy onwards). Competition studies with most common anions found in ground water as well as soil such as Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, CO32-, PO43- indicate that, even in presence of high concentration (1:10000 molar ratio) of these interfering anions, TcO4- can be selectively extracted by the resins confirming their effectiveness towards the decontamination of real ground water with respect to 99Tc.

Abstract:S/mZVI is a promising material for groundwater remediation due to its excellent properties. However, the reactivity and electron selectivity toward target contaminant are critical. Thus, this study investigated the effect of complex groundwater chemistries (Milli-Q water, fresh groundwater and saline groundwater) on the reactivity of S/mZVI toward trichloroethylene (TCE), dechlorination pathway, hydrogen evolution kinetic, electron efficiency and aging behaviors. Results showed that sulfidation appreciably increased the reactivity and electron selectivity. The major degradation product of TCE dechlorination by S/mZVI was acetylene, which was consistent with TCE dechlorination by β-elimination. Moreover, reductive β-elimination was still the dominant dechlorination pathway for the application of S/mZVI in three groundwater conditions. However, the rates and the quantities of major products from TCE degradation varied significantly. S/mZVI in saline groundwater can maintain the reactivity towardTCE due to the protection of Fe 0 by Fe 3 O 4 deposited on the surface. Thus, the higher TCE removal efficiency and less hydrogen accumulation resulted in the greatest electron efficiency (4.3–79.2%). Overall, S/mZVI was more effective for the application in saline groundwater. This study proved insight into the comprehensive evaluation and implications for the application of S/mZVI based technologies in saline contaminated groundwater.

Functional Carbon Capsules Supporting Ruthenium Nanoclusters for Efficient Electrocatalytic 99TcO4−/ReO4− Removal from Acidic and Alkaline Nuclear Wastes

Abstract:Hollow carbon capsules supporting ruthenium metal clusters and a thin polymer layer rich in imidazolium‐N+ units enable highly efficient 99TcO4−/ReO4− removal under harsh conditions relevant to nuclear fuel waste processing and storage. The imidazolium‐N+ promotes selective 99TcO4−/ReO4− binding, while the Ru clusters provide a reversible electron transfer platform for electrocatalytic conversion of 99TcO4−/ReO4− to TcO3/ReO3, resulting in record‐high extraction efficiencies. The selective removal of the β‐emitting pertechnetate ion (99TcO4−) from nuclear waste streams is technically challenging. Herein, a practical approach is proposed for the selective removal of 99TcO4− (or its surrogate ReO4−) under extreme conditions of high acidity, alkalinity, ionic strength, and radiation field. Hollow porous N‐doped carbon capsules loaded with ruthenium clusters (Ru@HNCC) are first prepared, then modified with a cationic polymeric network (R) containing imidazolium‐N+ units (Ru@HNCC‐R) for selective 99TcO4− and ReO4− binding. The Ru@HNCC‐R capsules offer high binding affinities for 99TcO4−/ReO4− under wide‐ranging conditions. An electrochemical redox process then transforms adsorbed ReO4− to bulk ReO3, delivering record‐high removal capacities, fast kinetics, and excellent long‐term durability for removing ReO4− (as a proxy for 99TcO4−) in a 3 m HNO3, simulated nuclear waste‐Hanford melter recycle stream and an alkaline high‐level waste stream (HLW) at the U.S. Savannah River Site (SRS). In situ Raman and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses showed that adsorbed Re(VII) is electrocatalytically reduced on Ru sites to a Re(IV)O2 intermediate, which can then be re‐oxidized to insoluble Re(VI)O3 for facile collection. This approach overcomes many of the challenges associated with the selective separation and removal of 99TcO4−/ReO4− under extreme conditions, offering new vistas for nuclear waste management and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Composite of nano-zero-valent iron and montmorillonite (NZVI/MMT) was prepared by inserting NZVI into the interlayer of montmorillonite. The unique structure montmorillonite with isolated exchangeable Fe(III) cations residing near the sites of structural negative charges inhibited the agglomeration of ZVI and result in the formation of ZVI particles in the montmorillonite interlayer regions. NZVI/MMT was demonstrated to possess large specific surface area and outstanding reducibility that encourage rapid and stable reaction with Cr (VI). Besides, the intercalation also makes NZVI well dispersed and more stable in the interlayer, thereby improving the reaction capacity by 16 times. The effects of pH value, initial concentration of Cr (VI) and reaction time on Cr (VI) removal have also been investigated in detail. According to PXRD and XPS characterization, NZVI/Cr (VI) redox reaction occurred in the interlayer of MMT. The study of NZVI/MMT is instrumental to the development of remediation technologies for persistent environmental contaminants.

Abstract:Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), an ideal reductant treating persistent pollutants, is hampered by issues like corrosion, passivation, and suboptimal utilization. Recent advancements in nonmetallic modified ZVI (NM-ZVI) show promising potential in circumventing these challenges by modifying ZVI's surface and internal physicochemical properties. Despite its promise, a thorough synthesis of research advancements in this domain remains elusive. Here we review the innovative methodologies, regulatory principles, and reduction-centric mechanisms underpinning NM-ZVI's effectiveness against two prevalent persistent pollutants: halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals. We start by evaluating different nonmetallic modification techniques, such as liquid-phase reduction, mechanical ball milling, and pyrolysis, and their respective advantages. The discussion progresses towards a critical analysis of current strategies and mechanisms used for NM-ZVI to enhance its reactivity, electron selectivity, and electron utilization efficiency. This is achieved by optimizing the elemental compositions, content ratios, lattice constants, hydrophobicity, and conductivity. Furthermore, we propose novel approaches for augmenting NM-ZVI's capability to address complex pollution challenges. This review highlights NM-ZVI's potential as an alternative to remediate water environments contaminated with halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals, contributing to the broader discourse on green remediation technologies.

Treatment of radioactive wastes: an X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of the reaction of technetium with green rust

Abstract:Technetium is a long-lived product of nuclear fission that readily forms the soluble pertechnetate anion [TcO(4)](-). Green rusts (layered hydrous oxides containing both Fe(II) and Fe(III) and with interlayer sulfate or carbonate anions) concentrate >99.8% of 99Tc, present as [TcO(4)](-), from aqueous solution, even in the presence of high concentrations of NaNO(3), a common constituent of radioactive waste streams. The mechanism of removal from solution is apparently reduction and formation of strong Tc(IV) surface complexes. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that [TcO(4)](-) is indeed reduced by reaction with both sulfate- and carbonate-form green rusts and is found in a TcO(2)-like environment. On contact with air, the green rusts oxidize to poorly crystalline goethite but the Tc environment is unchanged. There is no increase in Tc solubility associated with oxidation of the host green rust. This behavior suggests that green rusts may be useful in the treatment of Tc-containing waste streams, in groundwater cleanup, and in restricting Tc migration from repositories.
