Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ti1- x Crx O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20) samples were synthesised via acid-modified sol-gel process and characterised with various techniques, such as HRTEM, FESEM, Raman, XPS, DTA and VSM. The TEM image of TiO2 exhibits elongated nanoparticles with an average size of 10 nm. The HRTEM in combination with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) reveals the interplanar spacing and polycrystalline nature of the samples, respectively. FESEM micrographs divulge nonuniform morphologies and less aggregation of the particles in the doped sample. Raman spectra ensure the phase purity of the samples and a blue shift on Cr doping. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) predict the chemical state of the elements and oxygen vacancies in the prepared samples. Room temperature magnetic measurements exhibit a significant variation in the magnetic parameters on Cr doping in TiO2 . The differential thermal analysis (DTA) shows the structural phase transition at ∼630°C. The photocatalytic performance is studied for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light irradiation. A higher photocatalytic efficiency is found for the 20% of Cr-doped TiO2 . These studies propose that the appropriate incorporation of Cr ions makes TiO2 very efficient for visible light-driven photocatalysts required for applications in wastewater treatment. LAY DESCRIPTION: In the present study, nanoparticles of TiO2 and Cr-doped TiO2 have been synthesised by a cost-effective acid-modified sol-gel process. The effect of Cr doping on the microstructure, thermal, magnetic and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 were explored in detail. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images exhibit the presence of elongated nanoparticles with an average size of 10 nm. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to study the surface morphology of the synthesised materials, which revealed nonuniform morphologies and less aggregation of the particles in the Cr-doped sample. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirms the elemental compositions with the appropriate stoichiometry of the elements. Raman spectra ensure the phase purity of the materials and also a blue shift with the incorporation of Cr ions in TiO2 . X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) predict the chemical state of the elements and oxygen vacancies in the prepared samples. The magnetic nature of all the synthesised samples was examined through the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and revealed weak ferromagnetic behaviour of the samples. These results signify that the oxygen vacancies and defects play a crucial role in developing the ferromagnetic nature of oxide semiconductors. Abstract:In this paper, undoped and 7 %, and 20 % chromium doped titanium dioxide thin films were synthesized on silicon and quartz substrates by utilizing the sol-gel spin coating process. The films were then annealed at 450 °C. The synthesis process and the effects of doping on the structural, optical, and vibrational properties were studied. XRD analysis showed that the undoped thin film had an anatase phase with a crystalline size of about 15.4 nm. However, as the concentration of chromium increased, the crystalline size decreased, and we obtained a mixed phase of rutile and anatase for doped films. The FTIR spectra revealed that undoped films had Ti–O bonding at 435 cm −1 and bond with stretching at 619 cm −1 wavenumbers, which decreased to 379 cm −1 and 377 cm −1 wavenumbers for 7 % and 20 % Cr doping, respectively. The optical measurements showed that the films were homogeneous and had high transmission, reaching 95 % in the visible range for the undoped thin film and 80 % for higher doping levels of chromium. These films have a remarkable level of transparency, and because of that they are highly regarded in the field of thin-film solar cells. Their optical properties make them an excellent choice for use as optical windows in these types of solar cells. As the amount of chromium in the film increases, the optical bandgap decreases from 3.23 eV to 2.26 eV. This suggests that chromium has a significant impact on the optical properties of these films, which might be helpful to researchers and professionals working in the fields of solar energy, optoelectronic devices, photocatalytic systems, gas sensors, and solar cell passivation.

Extension of the Optical Absorption of Tio2 Nanopaticles to Visible Light Region by Doping with Cobalt

Abstract:TiO2 nanoparticles doped with different cobalt concentrations were fabricated by using so-gel method. The crystal structures and the morphology of the samples were characterized by using x-ray diffractmetry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. It was found that all the samples are anatase phase and the nano-particles are of the size around 10 nm. Investigations of the binding energies of different element with X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) revealed that Co ions are in Co2+ state and take the substitutional sites. No Co clusters were detected in the samples. The optical absorption properties of the samples were studied by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was noticed that cobalt doped TiO2 has a significant visible light absorption in contrast to pure TiO2: besides a noticeable red shift in absorption edge, an extra visible light absorption peak appears at a wavelength around 600 nm. The visible absorption in cobalt doped TiO2 may attribute to the electron transition from impurity levels induced by the substitutional Co ions and the oxygen vacancies to the conduct band.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of chromium (Cr3+) doping on BaTiO3 nanoparticles synthesized via the sol–gel route. X-ray diffraction confirms a Cr-induced cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition, with lattice parameters and crystallite size varying systematically with Cr3+ content. UV–visible spectroscopy reveals a monotonic decrease in bandgap energy from 3.168 eV (pure BaTiO3) to 2.604 eV (5% Cr3+-doped BaTiO3). Raman and FTIR spectroscopy elucidate structural distortions and vibrational mode alterations caused by Cr3+ incorporation. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy verify nanoscale morphology and successful Cr3+ doping (up to 1.64 atom%). Antioxidant activity, evaluated using the DPPH assay, shows stable radical scavenging for pure BaTiO3 (40.70–43.33%), with decreased activity at higher Cr3+ doping levels. Antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli peaks at 0.5% Cr3+ doping (10.569 mm inhibition zone at 1.5 mg/mL), decreasing at higher concentrations. This study demonstrates the tunability of structural, optical, and bioactive properties in Cr3+-doped BaTiO3 nanoparticles, highlighting their potential as multifunctional materials for electronics, photocatalysis, and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Mn doped TiO2 nanoparticles are synthesized by sol–gel method. Incorporation of Mn shifts the diffraction peak of TiO2 to lower angle. The position and width of the Raman peak and photoluminescence intensity of the doped nanoparticles varies with oxygen vacancy and Mn doping level. The electron spin resonance spectra of the Mn doped TiO2 show peaks at g = 1.99 and 4.39, characteristic of Mn2+ state. Reduction in the emission intensity, on Mn doping, is owing to the increase of nonradiative oxygen vacancy centers. Mn doped TiO2, with 2% Mn, shows ferromagnetic ordering at low applied field. Paramagnetic contribution increases as Mn loading increases to 4% and 6%. Temperature dependent magnetic measurement shows a small kink in the ZFC curve at about 40 K, characteristic of Mn3O4. The ferromagnetic ordering is possibly due to the interaction of the neighboring Mn2+ ions via oxygen vacancy (F+ center). Increase in Mn concentration increases the fraction of Mn3O4 phase and thereby increases the paramagnetic ordering.

Abstract:We have synthesized a series of high quality EuTi1-xCrxO3 ( x = 0.0, 0.02, and 0.04) nanoparticles by simple sol-gel technique. The averaged grain size of these obtained nanoparticles displays no obvious change with Cr-doping and is about 100 nm. The structural and magnetic properties of EuTi1-xCrxO3 ( x = 0.0, 0.02, and 0.04) samples were detailedly investigated. It is found that the G-antiferromagnetic (G-AFM) ordering of pure EuTiO3 can be significantly modified with slight Cr-doping, and finally the ferromagnetic behavior is enhanced for EuTi1-xCrxO3 system with Cr-doping. Fabrication of V-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles and Photocatalytic Studies under Visible Light

Abstract:The V-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy respectively. It is found that doping V can shift the absorption edge to the visible light region and decrease the recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Then the photo-absorption and photocatalytic activity were greatly improved. The optimal doping concentration is 0.5% due to synergetic effect of the recombination of electron-hole pairs and adsorption of dyes molecules at the surface of samples.

Abstract:Investigation on different materials at the nanoscale has transformed the significant aspects of technology, especially the revolution in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. In this context, the first principle and experimental investigations on Cr-doped Ta2O5 compositions are presented. The simulations for electronic, thermoelectric and optical properties were performed through DFT TB-mBJ calculations. The p-d hybridization between Ta and O atoms appeared in the density of states spectra. Experimentally, Cr-doped Ta2O5 thin films were fabricated through a well-known magnetron sputtering technique. The crystallographic studies reveal the growth of the orthorhombic structure of Ta2O5. The Cr in thin films leads to grain growth which increases with Cr dopant content. Thermoelectric properties especially the Seebeck coefficient of Cr-containing compositions are improved. The optical parameters are recorded as a function of photon energy which shows a resemblance in simulation and experimental results. The maximum value of the experimental refractive index for all compositions was noticed at the highest energy regimes and found to increase from 2.34 to 3.65 with maximum Cr content. Similarly, the maximum value of real epsilon enhanced from 3.59 to 12.01. The improved thermoelectric and optical properties make these compositions favorable for energy harvesting and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:The doping of Cr ions on the structure, optical and magnetic properties of ZnO have been investigated. Zn 1− x Cr x O (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) samples were prepared by the solution combustion method. Rietveld refined x-ray diffraction results reveal that all the samples are in a hexagonal structure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the particle size was 48.2 ± 2.1 nm, 29.4 ± 2.2 nm and 25.3 ± 2.1 nm for the Zn 1− x Cr x O with x = 0, 0.03 and 0.05, respectively. The band-gap decreases slightly from 3.308 ± 0.003 eV to 3.291 ± 0.003 eV with increase of Cr content from x = 0 to 0.05, respectively. The field-dependent magnetization M (μ ο H ) measurements of ZnO and Cr-doped ZnO exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance exhibits negatively charged zinc vacancies ( VZn−) and singly ionized oxygen vacancies ( Vo+ ) in ZnO and these defects are responsible for RTFM. And the VZn− accountable for RTFM in Cr-doped ZnO. EPR results confirmed that Cr 3+ ions replaces the Zn 2+ sites in the hexagonal ZnO. The observed long-range ferromagnetism ordering is explained based on the bound magnetic polaron (BMP) mechanism. This work elucidates the origin of RTFM in synthesized ZnO and Cr-doped ZnO.

Abstract:AbstractThe photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) has been investigated under visible light irradiation with an incandescent light bulb using chromium doped TiO2 nanoparticles. Cr–TiO2 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by sol–gel method at room temperature and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The band gap energy of the nanoparticles were estimated using UV–Vis DRS technique. With increasing Cr3+ cations content into TiO2 host lattice, the optical absorption band tuned in the visible region. XRD and TEM results reveal uniform and crystalline anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The photodegradation of MB indicated that the photocatalytic activity of pure TiO2 nanoparticles increased with increasing Cr3+ cations concentration.

Abstract:In the present work, pure CeO2, neodymium-doped CeO2, and neodymium and transition metal element (Cu, Zn, Cr)-codoped CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by an auto-combustion method and annealed at 700 ∘C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that all the samples exhibited a single-phase cubic fluorite structure with the incorporation of respective dopant ions into the CeO2 lattice. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images displayed the prepared nanoparticles which had an irregular flaky structure with large agglomerations. The Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy analysis revealed the increased oxygen vacancy defects in CeO2 host after doping and codoping with neodymium and transition metal elements. Ultraviolet-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) studies revealed the decrease in bandgap values in doped and codoped samples compared to pure CeO2 sample. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies revealed the presence of functional groups in the prepared samples. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analysis reported the decreased luminescence intensities of Nd-doped and neodymium and transition metal-codoped CeO2 nanoparticles. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) results depicted that all the samples exhibited room-temperature ferromagnetism.

Abstract:TiO2 doped with transition‐metal ions is prepared by hydrothermal method. Experimental and theoretical calculations show that due to the uniform distribution of impurity atoms and the addition of oxygen vacancies, the Cr3+/Ov–TiO2 photoanode delivers a greatly increased incident photon‐to‐electron conversion efficiency of 5.4% at 450 nm, superior to the pure TiO2 of 0.03%. Transition‐metal‐ion doping is an effective method to shorten bandgap and enhance visible‐light absorption of TiO2, but there are still some serious challenges for most doping technologies, such as nonuniform doping, severe lattice damages, metal atoms agglomeration, and inactivated impurities. Herein, a simple and universal hydrothermal method is developed to realize the effective transition‐metal ions doping of TiO2 (including Fe, Co, Mn, Cu, V, and Cr). The photoelectrochemical water splitting performances of Cr‐doped TiO2 nanorods with multifarious Cr ion valence states (Cr3+ or Cr6+ ions), various Cr‐ion concentrations, with or without oxygen vacancy activation are emphatically and systematically studied. Experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the remarkably enhanced carrier separation and injection efficiencies are the key factors to improve the visible‐light photoactivity, benefiting from the homogeneous distribution of impurity atoms and the incorporation of oxygen vacancies. The Cr3+‐ion‐doped TiO2 nanorod arrays with oxygen vacancy activation (Cr3+/Ov–TiO2) displays an impressive incident photon‐to‐electron conversion efficiency of 5.4% at 450 nm visible light, far superior to the pure TiO2 of 0.03%. Furthermore, no obvious photocurrent decay is observed in the Cr3+/Ov–TiO2 photoanode after 12 h continuous light illumination.

Abstract:Intrinsic and chromium (Cr) doped zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies reveals that the nanoparticles are crystalline in nature with cubic phase that have the (111) as preferential orientation. Even though the Cr ions have ionic radii greater than Zn, no significant modification in the crystal structure occurs as revealed by the XRD pattern. The doping induces a reduction in the peak intensities. The optical energy band gap values decrease and the Urbach exponential tail width increases with an increase in Cr level. When the dopant concentration is increased, the microstrain decreases and crystallite size increases. The surface morphology analysis has been carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of the elements Zn, S, and Cr has been conformed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The intensity that corresponds to Cr lines increases as the dopant increases with respect to Zn which is an evidence of the increased Cr level.

Abstract:The performance and optoelectronic properties of the transition metal (TM) oxide thin films can be enhanced by doping with other materials. In this study, V 2 O 5 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by sol–gel and then used to prepare V 2 O 5 -doped Cr 2 O 3 thin films using the spin-coating technique. The microstructural, morphological characterization, I–V measurements, and optical properties of the films were investigated. The XRD, FE-SEM, EDAX, and FTIR measurements revealed the polycrystalline nature, granular morphology, reduction in particle size (from 43 ± 2.58 nm to 21 ± 1.25 nm), crystallinity deterioration, and the limited stretching vibrations of Cr–O and Cr–O–Cr upon inclusion of V 2 O 5 . The doping didn't alter the rhomoboedric corundum structure of Cr 2 O 3 . The films exhibited linear I–V behavior and their resistance decreased with doping. The films are highly transparent (up to 88%), and their absorption was minimal in the visible region. A new figure of merit was in the range of 0.255–0.270. The refractive index has bell-shaped behavior with the wavelength and increased with increasing V 2 O 5 . Additionally, the optical band gap ( E g ) of the films decreased from 3.0 to 2.5 eV. The influences of 0.5–5.0% V 2 O 5 doping ratio on the grain size, dislocation density, microstrain, and charge carrier concentration were investigated. The finding of this study indicates that the optoelectronic features of V 2 O 5 -doped Cr 2 O 3 films were improved and the films can be used for various optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of defects on the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of tetragonal titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and its cobalt-doped variant, Ti 0.95 Co 0.05 O 2 . The research findings of diffraction studies confirms the formation of phases such as anatase, rutile, and their combination within TiO 2 nano-structures following annealing. The Debye-Scherrer's rings observed in the selected area electron diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images showed an aggregate of randomly oriented nano-structures. Additionally, elemental analysis confirms the presence of Ti and O as primary constituents. The detailed analysis using microscopy and spectroscopy study identified a high-spin D 2h state in Co 2+ , indicative of lattice defects across the TiO 2 nano-structures. A blue shifting in the photoluminescence band gap emission peaks suggested the presence of oxygen vacancy defects in the doped nano-structures. Notably, the increased surface defects and reduced catalyst size promote rapid migration of electron-hole pairs to reaction sites i.e. ; on the surface, thereby reducing recombination rates. Ultimately, the study concludes that anatase TiO 2 , due to its exceptional catalytic performance, is more favourable for applications in photo-catalysis and spintronics than its rutile or mixed-phase counterparts.

Electronic Properties of Cr-N Codoped Rutile TiO2(110) Thin Films

Abstract:We report our investigation on the electronic properties of Cr-N codoped rutile TiO2(110) single crystal thin films, homoepitaxially grown by pulsed-laser-deposition method, and characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), X-ray/ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (XPS/UPS), in combination with first-principles calculations. Our results show that the bandgap reduction of the TiO2(110) surface is mainly contributed by the delocalized states whose position is at 2.0 eV below the Fermi level, introduced by the substitutional codoped Cr-2N pair, which is evidenced by the accordance of the results between the STS spectra and the calculated DOS. The codoped Cr-N pair contributes the gap state at about 0.8 eV below the Fermi level, in consistent with the theoretical calculations. While, the monodoped Cr contributes the states either close to the valence band maximum or the conduction band minimum, which should not contribute to the bandgap reduction too much. Our experimental results joint with theoretical calculations provide an atomic view of the bandgap reduction of the rutile TiO2(110) surface, which indicates that the excess substitutional N atoms should be important to efficiently narrow the bandgap by introducing the Cr-2N pairs. Influence of chromium concentration on the structural, electronic structure, optical and temperature dependent magnetic properties of ZnS nanocrystals

Abstract:The effect of Cr dopant on the structural, optical, magnetic properties and local electronic structure of aqueous synthesis derived Zn1−xCrxS diluted magnetic semiconductor nano crystals have systematically investigated. The nano crystalline structure and crystallite size have been estimated by X-ray diffraction measurements with Rietveld refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Effective increase of the lattice parameter has been observed in doped samples. Raman spectroscopy has been employed to study the crystalline quality, structural disorder and defects in the host lattice. The tetrahedral coordination of the sulfur ions surrounding the zinc ions has been studied by FTIR analysis. The decrease of energy band gap for Cr doped samples has observed. Blue emission has been observed by photo luminescence spectroscopy due to defect formation (Cri) in Cr-doped samples. The local electronic structures of Zn and Cr sites are thoroughly studied by synchrotron based X-ray absorption spectroscopy comprising of both X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). EXAFS studies indicate the presence of secondary phase within the sphalerite lattice of diluted Zn1−xCrxS nanocrystals while XANES studies exhibit single pre-edge feature. The amplitude of such pre edge is found to be independent of Cr amount on doped ZnS nanocrystals. The results demonstrated that diluted Cr3+ ions are substituted on the host ZnS nanocrystal. The Cr doped ZnS sample shows paramagnetism at room (300 K) and at low (5 K) temperature. The Cr–S bonds are the crucial premise for paramagnetic ordering.

Abstract:In this inspection, the structural, microstructural, electrical, and magnetic properties of Cr-doped Cu 0.5 Mg 0.5 Cr x Fe 2−x O 4 (x = 0.0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, and 0.16) composites were examined, which were prepared using the sol–gel technique. The x-ray diffraction patterns of the samples sintered at 700 °C for 5 h demonstrate the production of single-phase spinel ferrite. FESEM images indicate a nearly homogeneous surface morphology with non-spherical particles. The average grain size was found to decrease with the Cr concentration. The EDS spectroscopy study of the parent composition and a representative sample of doping composition (x = 0.08) revealed the existence of doped Cr, as well as Fe, Mg, Cu, and O, in the sample. The fluctuation of Cr doping has a significant impact on the magnetic characteristics. The saturation magnetization (M s ) declines as the Cr level grows up to x = 0.08 and then again increases with the increasing Cr content, which may be due to antiferromagnetic Cr not remaining at B sites. Permeability measurements show a similar trend as well. This is expected since μ ′ is proportional to M s squared and grain size. The imaginary part of the permeability decreases with increasing frequency and remains almost constant in the high frequency region. The dielectric constant decreases with frequency increment and remains almost persistent in a higher frequency range. The dielectric permittivity increases with the increasing Cr content up to x = 0.08 but then decreases for greater Cr concentrations. Lower hopping probabilities across grain boundaries may explain the decreasing tendency of the dielectric measurement and rising resistivity with Cr doping after the x = 0.08 concentration. These samples are well-suited for use in high-frequency systems due to their low dielectric loss.

Abstract:The study particularly focuses on the effect of the Cr co-doping on the structural, optical and magnetic properties of Zn0.99Fe0.01O. Zn0.99-xFe0.01CrxO (x =0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) nanoparticles. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms all the samples have hexagonal wurtzite structures. The average crystallite size (D) and microstrain of the samples were calculated using the Williamson-Hall relation and D was found to be 13 +- 1 nm for Zn0.99Fe0.01O. In Cr co-doped samples, D increase slightly with Cr content and are given by 9 +- 1, 10 +- 1, and 11 +- 1 nm for the samples with x = 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05, respectively; while the strain decreased with increase in Cr co-doping. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the samples indicate that particles are in the nano-regime and agglomerated. Particle sizes are found to be 14 +- 1, 11 +- 1 and 12 +- 1 nm for Zn0.99-xFe0.01CrxO with x = 0, 0.03 and 0.05, respectively. The substitution of Fe3+ and Cr3+ at Zn2+ sites has an impact on the optical properties. The band-gap decreases from 3.296 +- 0.002 eV to 3.258 +- 0.002 eV with increase of Cr concentration. Photoluminescence (PL) of Zn0.96Fe0.01Cr0.03O revealed the presence of defects, the emission peaks at 410 nm and 513 nm are attributed to Zn vacancies (VZn) and singly ionized oxygen vacancies, respectively. The M(-H) curves of Zn0.99-xFe0.01CrxO (x = 0.03 and 0.05) measured at room temperature using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) are found to be hysteretic, signifying room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Maximum saturation magnetization, 0.67 +- 0.01 emu.g-1, is observed in Zn0.94Fe0.01Cr0.05O. The observed RTFM in Fe+Cr co-doped ZnO is explained by of bound magnetic polaron (BMP) mechanism, the BMPs are formed by VZn and Vo^+ defects. This paper enhances the understanding of the origin of RTFM in Fe+Cr co-doped ZnO nanoparticles.

Abstract:The growth of Cr-doped rutile TiO2(110) homoepitaxial single crystal thin films using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method was investigated. Surface morphology and electronic structure were characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), and X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies (XPS/UPS). Optical absorption spectra were measured using ultraviolet- visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy. STM images revealed that the atomically flat TiO2(110)-(1×1) surface was maintained at a Cr doping concentration of 6% (atomic ratio), indicating that the Cr dopant had negligible effect on surface morphology. The Cr-doped rutile TiO2(110) film showed higher tunneling conductance than an undoped rutile single crystal. XPS and UPS spectra indicated that Cr atoms bound to lattice O, were present in +3 oxidation state and introduced an impurity state 0.4 eV above the valence band maximum. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of the Cr-doped film showed an absorbance extending to ~650 nm in the visible range, which was consistent with UPS measurements. Using the Cr-doped TiO2 films, the dissociation of methanol molecules was only observed under irradiation with UV light (wavelength shorter than 430 nm). The dissociation reaction was not observed under irradiation with visible light (wavelength longer than 430 nm). Our results suggest that doping with Cr element alone may not be sufficient to promote the visible light photoactivity of rutile TiO2(110) surfaces.
