Abstract:This study constructed a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) coupled model which researched on the migration process in vadose zone and aquifer using the software of HSSM and Visual MODFLOW. The paper predicted the risk of benzene leaching accident which is the typical pollution of petrochemical industry. A quantitative analysis of groundwater contamination and the adjacent sea area pollution impact was conducted. The results showed that benzene can infiltrate through the vadose zone and form lens on the aquifer water table causing long-term pollution to the groundwater. The total amount of benzene transporting into the sea would up to 3428 kg in 8.2 a which will cause adverse effects on marine water quality and ecological environment.

Abstract:Leachate leakage poses a serious environmental risk to the safety of surrounding soils and groundwater. A much faster approach to reflect landfill leakage is the premise to mitigate the ecological risk of landfills. In this study, two landfills (BJ and WZ) were selected to investigate the leaching characteristics of various pollutants along the vadose soil depths. The physiochemical properties of underlying soils including NO3--N, NO2--N, NH4+-N, OM, TN, EC and Cl- exhibited a typical leaching dynamic along the depths. Among them, TN, NH4+-N, OM, NO3--N, and EC might be used as characteristic pollutants to evaluate the leachate leakage issues in landfilled sites. The genera Thiopseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Hydrogenispora dominated in underlying soils. Compared to BJ samples, a more diverse and active microbiome capable of carbon and nitrogen cycles was observed in WZ samples, which was mainly ascribed to nutrients and elements contained in different types of soils. Among the environmental factors, nitrogenous compounds, SO42-, pH and EC had significant effects on the microbial community structures in the underlying soils. The relative abundances of Hydrogenispora and Caldicoprobacter might be used as characteristic microorganisms to evaluate the leachate leakage issues in landfilled sites. These results provided a deep insight into effects of leachate leakage in underlying soils, especially the pollutants vertical distribution and the corresponding microbial community structures.

Abstract:To investigate the complex hydrological, morphodynamic, and environmental processes in watersheds, a physically-based integrated two-dimensional (2D) surface and three-dimensional (3D) subsurface model for flow, soil erosion and transport, and contaminant transport in the surface-subsurface system is presented in this paper. The model simulates the rainfall-induced surface flow by solving the depth-averaged 2D diffusion wave equation and the variably-saturated subsurface flow by solving the 3D mixed-form Richards equation. The surface and subsurface flow equations are coupled using the continuity conditions of pressure and exchange flux at the ground surface. The model uses the concept of nonequilibrium in the depth-averaged 2D simulation of nonuniform total-load sediment transport in upland fields, considering detachments by rainsplash and hydraulic erosion driven by surface flow. The integrated 2D surface and 3D subsurface contaminant transport model takes into account the contaminant changes due to sediment sorption and desorption, as well as exchanges between surface and subsurface domains due to infiltration, diffusion, and bed change. The model applies the same set of surface equations of flow, sediment, and contaminant transport for describing both upland areas and streams, so that no special treatments are required at their interface. The established model has been evaluated by comparisons with published experimental, numerical, and analytical data and then applied in an agricultural watershed. The model is suitable for wetland areas and agricultural watersheds in which streams are not very narrow and deep, and meanwhile a relatively fine mesh that can distinguish the streams is preferred.
An Analytical Model for Contaminant Transport in Landfill Liner with Fluctuating Leachate Head

Abstract:Leachate head in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills can be very high (e.g., >10 m) in some Chinese landfills and can continuously change during the service life of the landfill. Variations of leachate head can induce time-dependent seepage velocity changes in the liner, which may lead to a change of transport mechanisms of contaminants. An analytical model for contaminant transport through clay liner system considering the effects of leachate head variations is presented. The analytical solution is obtained using the recursive method and the Green's function approach. The proposed analytical solution is verified by numerical results. The model is then applied to investigate the effects of variable leachate head on the transport of contaminants. The results indicated that time-dependent advection arising from leachate head variations may play a significant part when investigating contaminant transport through a clay liner. The contaminant concentrations at the bottom of the liner predicted by using fixed leachate head may be underestimated compared to the case with variable leachate heads. The bottom concentration of Pb2+ at t = 50 years for the case with H-D = 60 m can be 6.6 times larger than that of the case with fixed leachate head. The mechanisms of contaminant transfer may change from a diffusion-dominated process to an advection-dominated process. For example, the molecular diffusion is the dominant process in Event 1 (e.g., t < 5 years with Peclet number < 1) while advection induced by the variations of leachate head may play a more important role for contaminant transport when t > 5 years. Increasing leachate head can result in an earlier breakthrough time and steady state for contaminant transport. The breakthrough time of DCM for the case with H-D = 60 m can be 1.6 times lower than that for the case with fixed leachate head. Considering the effects of leachate head variations may be critical to design a more stable and reliable landfill liner.
Estimation of the leak term and sensitivity analysis at a LUST groundwater system under data scarcity

Abstract:With the development and popularization of automobiles in China, the Leaking Underground Storage Tanks (LUSTs) containing gasoline have become potential sources of groundwater contaminant. However, in China information on the occurrence of LUSTs in groundwater is scarce. Based on general enquiries and investigation of 22 LUST sites, a typical one located in Suzhou city was selected to explore the existence of tank leakage and assess its effect on the groundwater quality. Based on the proposition that anaerobic benzene degradation occurs in the aquifer, MODFLOW and MT3DMS, two commonly used groundwater flow and transport simulators, are introduced to simulate the contaminant transport of benzene in groundwater, and determine the leak location and the leak rate at the same time. Considering there are broad categories of modelling uncertainty, the sensitivity analysis is used in this study to address the relative importance of eight model parameters in the established model. This study demonstrates a general framework fur identifying the contaminant sources and evaluating the potential impacts of the LUSTs on drinking groundwater sources using numerical simulation models under data scarcity.
Site-scale groundwater pollution risk assessment using surrogate models and statistical analysis

Abstract:Petroleum pollution in soil and groundwater has emerged as a significant environmental concern worldwide. As a sustainable and cost-effective in-situ remediation technique, Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) exhibits significant promise in addressing sites contaminated by petrochemicals. This study specifically targets a typical petrochemical-contaminated site in northern China and employs GMS software to establish a comprehensive physical model. The model relies on time-series monitoring data of phenol concentrations spanning from 2018 to 2020, effectively simulating both the leakage and natural attenuation of phenol. Within this study, the adsorption coefficient and maximum adsorption capacity emerge as the foremost influential factors shaping the outcomes of the model. Given the inherent heterogeneity of the site and the variability of hydrochemical conditions, parameters such as dispersion, porosity, and adsorption coefficient exhibit significant uncertainties. Consequently, relying on traditional deterministic models to predict the feasibility of MNA technology is not reliable. Therefore, this study employs machine learning (ML) methods to construct stochastic parameter models based on physical processes. The Random Forest Regression (RFR) algorithm, after trained, demonstrates strong alignment with numerical model output, exhibiting an average Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) >0.96. Using a stochastic approach, RFR iteratively computes phenol concentration across 6000 sets of parameters. Applying probability statistics, the model shows a notable reduction in the likelihood of phenol concentrations exceeding a threshold, dropping from 64.0% to 15.7% before and after natural attenuation. In parameter uncertainty, the stochastic model emphasizes natural attenuation's efficacy in mitigating phenol pollution risk (porosity being the most influential factor). This case study proposed a novel method to quickly assess the pollution risks at petrochemical sites under the influence of the uncertainty of pollutant transport and reaction parameters. The results can provide a reference for the pollution risk assessment at petrochemical sites, especially in sites with high stratigraphic heterogeneity or insufficient transport parameter data.
The Effects of Spill Pressure on the Migration and Remediation of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids in Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Aquifers

Abstract:The spill pressure of the contaminant source is an important factor affecting the amount, location, form, and behavior of the dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) that plume in a contaminated subsurface environment. In this study, perchloroethylene (PCE) infiltration, distribution and, remediation via a surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) technique for a PCE spill event are simulated to evaluate the effects of the spill pressure of the contaminant source on the DNAPLs' behavior in two-dimensional homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifers. Five scenarios with different spill pressures of contamination sources are considered to perform the simulations. The results indicate that the spill pressure of the contaminant source has an obvious influence on the distribution of DNAPLs and the associated efficiency of remediation in homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifers. As the spill pressure increases, more and more contaminants come into the aquifer and the spread range of contamination becomes wider and wider. Simultaneously, the remediation efficiency of contamination also decreases from 93.49% to 65.90% as the spill pressure increases from 33.0 kPa to 41.0 kPa for a heterogeneous aquifer with 200 realizations. The simulation results in both homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifers show the same influence of the spill pressure of the contaminant source on PCE behaviors in the two-dimensional model. This study indicates that the consideration of the spill pressure of the contaminant sources (such as underground petrol tanks, underground oil storage, underground pipeline, and landfill leakage) is essential for the disposal of contaminant leakage in the subsurface environment. Otherwise, it is impossible to accurately predict the migration and distribution of DNAPLs and determine the efficient scheme for the removal of contaminant spills in groundwater systems.

A simulation analysis of the migration and transformation of pollutants contained in landfill leachate

Abstract:A dynamic composite model for a soil-water system that can be used to simulate the movement of leachate from a landfill. The composite model includes nine sub-models that trace water movement and the migration and transformation of five pollutants(organic N, NH4- ,NO3- , NO2- , and Cl- ) in saturated and unsaturated soil. The model to simulate the movement of leachate from a landfill in Laogang Town,Shanghai City was used. In this application, the values for the model parameters were obtained by performing a laboratory simulation experiment of water movement and pollutant migration and transformation in soil colunms. Soil and leachate obtained from the landfill site and its vicinity were used in the laboratory experiments. The model was then used to simulate leachate movement and pollutant activity during the ten-year period when the landfill was in operation and in the twenty-year period following its closure. The simulation results revealed that the leachate migrated into the groundwater at the rate of 90-100 meters per year. This model can be applied in the design of future landfills in China for the purpose of assessing and forecasting leachate plumes.

Abstract:Abstract The current approach to the management of contaminated sites includes a risk assessment procedure as a crucial step. In some jurisdictions (e.g., Italy), groundwater must be considered as a target of contamination. In other cases (e.g., USA), risks from exposure to contaminated groundwater (e.g., through the ingestion of contaminated water) must be taken into account. If the contaminant source is located in the vadose zone, the risk assessment requires modeling of contaminants leaching and subsequent transport to groundwater. In Tier 2 risk assessments, analytical transport models are used for this purpose. This paper compares steady state and a transient approach for modeling the leaching and migration of contaminants to groundwater. The steady-state model that was used considers soil–water partitioning, soil attenuation during transport and dilution with groundwater in a defined mixing zone. The transient model that was used considers source depletion due to leaching and volatilization, one-dimensional solute transport and a novel approach to the modeling of dilution with groundwater. Comparative simulations were performed with regard to a given site geometry and to index substances representing different contaminant classes: aromatic solvents, chlorinated solvents, and heavy metals. The results of the study indicate that, although steady-state models are simple and easy-to-use, taking into account the time variable is essential for a reasonable simulation of contaminant transport to groundwater, particularly for contaminants with high partition coefficients migrating through fine-grained soils.

Abstract:Leakage accidents of buried pipelines have become increasingly common due to the prolonged service of some pipelines which have been in use for more than 150 years. Therefore, there is an urgent need for accurate prediction of pollution scope to aid in the development of emergency remediation strategies. This study investigated the distribution of a light non-aqueous phase liquid in soils containing gas and water through numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. Firstly, a three-dimensional porous medium model was established using ANSYS FLUENT, and for the first time, the distribution of gas and groundwater in soil environments was simulated in the model. Subsequently, the distribution of the three phases of diesel, gas, and water in soil was studied with different leakage velocities and it was found that the leakage velocity played a significant role in the distribution. The areas of diesel in soils at 60 min were 0.112 m 2 , 0.194 m 2 , 0.217 m 2 , and 0.252 m 2 , with corresponding volumes of 0.028 m 3 , 0.070 m 3 , 0.086 m 3 , and 0.106 m 3 , respectively, for leakage velocities of 1.3 m/s, 3.4 m/s, 4.6 m/s, and 4.9 m/s. Calculation formulas for distribution areas and volumes were also developed to aid in future prevention and control strategies under different leakage velocities. The study also compared the distribution areas and volumes of diesel in soils with and without groundwater, and it was found that distribution scopes were larger in soils containing groundwater due to capillary force. In order to validate the accuracy of the numerical simulation, laboratory experiments were conducted to study the diffusion of oil, gas, and water under different leakage velocities. The results showed good agreement between the experiments and the simulations. The research findings are of great significance for preventing soil pollution and provide a theoretical basis for developing scientifically sound soil remediation strategies.

Abstract:A mathematical model for groundwater pollution in a leaky aquifer system, which involves main factors relevant to the leaky aquifer system, is presented. The exact expressions of various source/sink terms including the leakage term, pumpig well term, infiltration of waste irrigation water, precipitation nifiltration, percolation from river water and lake water in the advection-dispersion equation are derived theoretically. The causes for why unreasonable results easily occur near a well point in the present solute transport problem are also discussed. In addition, the numerical method used is discribed. This model is applied to describe the groundwater pollution in the Taiyuan Basin. The simulated values of the concentration of Cl- in groundwater and the hydraulic head agree very well with the field data. This demonstrates that the model is reliable and strongly practicable.
Contaminant Transport in the Sub-Surface Soil of an Uncontrolled Landfill Site in China: Site Investigation and Two-Dimensional Numerical Analysis

Abstract:A field investigation of contaminant transport beneath and around an uncontrolled landfill site in Huainan in China is presented in this paper. The research aimed at studying the migration of some chemicals present in the landfill leachate into the surrounding clayey soils after 17 years of landfill operation. The concentrations of chloride and sodium ions in the pore water of soil samples collected at depths up to 15 m were obtained through an extensive site investigation. The contents of organic matter in the soil samples were also determined. A two-dimensional numerical study of the reactive transport of sodium and chloride ion in the soil strata beneath and outside the landfill is also presented. The numerical modelling approach adopted is based on finite element/finite difference techniques. The domain size of approximately 300 × 30 m has been analysed and major chemical transport parameters/mechanisms are established via a series of calibration exercises. Numerical simulations were then performed to predict the long-term behaviour of the landfill in relation to the chemicals studied. The lateral migration distance of the chloride ions was more than 40 m which indicates that the advection and mechanical dispersion are the dominant mechanism controlling the contaminant transport at this site. The results obtained from the analysis of chloride and sodium migration also indicated a non-uniform advective flow regime of ions with depth, which were localised in the first few metres of the soil beneath the disposal site. The results of long-term simulations of contaminant transport indicated that the concentrations of ions can be 10 to 30 times larger than that related to the allowable limit of concentration values. The results of this study may be of application and interest in the assessment of potential groundwater and soil contamination at this site with a late Pleistocene clayey soil. The obtained transport properties of the soils and the contaminant transport mechanisms can also be used for the design of engineered barriers for the control of the long-term pollution of the site.

Sensitivity Analysis for Modeling of Cr(VI) Transfer From Soil to Surface Runoff

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in soil has become a serious environmental problem in China, and chromium is one of the major threats to human health. In order to better understand the transfer pattern of heavy metal hexavalent chromium from polluted sites into surface water, the influencing factors that affect solute transfer from soil into the surface runoff with linear and nonlinear adsorption equations based on a two-layer incomplete mixing model were analyzed in this study. The Quasi-Newton method was used to optimize model parameters by fitting with the experimental laboratory data of chromium (Cr(VI)) in surface runoff. The local sensitivity analysis and the Morris global sensitivity analysis approaches were used to assess the parameter importance of rainfall intensity p , the thickness of the mixing layer h mix , incomplete mixing parameter α and γ , the soil adsorption parameters, and the initial soil water content θ 0 . The study results showed that the optimized nonlinear models were better consistent with the experimental results than the linear adsorption equation model. The results of global sensitivity indicated that rainfall intensity p was the main factor influencing Cr(VI) transport from the soil into surface runoff. The h mix and the α in the two-layer model were vital parameters that influenced such transport processes. Moreover, the soil adsorption properties and the θ 0 had the lowest effects on runoff Cr(VI) loss. The results indicate that for controlling pollution migration in surface runoff, it is essential to focus on the analysis of precipitation conditions and soil properties that control the thickness of the mixing layer and the degree of mixing.

Abstract:A mathematical model for groundwater pollution in a leaky aquifer system, which involves the adsorption of semipervious layer, is presented. The model is applied to describe the Hg pollution in groundwater of Taiyuan Basin. The average error of hydraulic-head is 0. 407"- 0. 50m;and the average error of Hg concentration is less than 4%-5%.The result-indicates the model is reliable, practical and provides scientific, methods for forecasting ground water pollution quantitatively in a leaky aquifer system.
Effect of soil moisture dynamics on dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) spill zone architecture in heterogeneous porous media

Abstract:The amount, location, and form of NAPL in contaminated vadose zones are controlled by the spatial distribution of water saturation and soil permeability, the NAPL spill scenario, water infiltration events, and vapor transport. To evaluate the effects of these processes, we used the three-phase flow simulator STOMP, which includes a new permeability-liquid saturation-capillary pressure (k-S-P) constitutive model. This new constitutive model considers three NAPL forms: free, residual, and trapped. A 2-D vertical cross-section with five stratigraphic layers was assumed, and simulations were performed for seven cases. The conceptual model of the soil heterogeneity was based upon the stratigraphy at the Hanford carbon tetrachloride (CT) spill site. Some cases considered co-disposal of NAPL with large volumes of wastewater, as also occurred at the Hanford CT site. In these cases, the form and location of NAPL were most strongly influenced by high water discharge rates and NAPL evaporation to the atmosphere. In order to investigate the impact of heterogeneity, the hydraulic conductivity within the lower permeability layer was modeled as a realization of a random field having three different classes. For six extreme cases of 100 realizations, the CT mass that reached the water table varied by a factor of two, and was primarily controlled by the degree of lateral connectivity of the low conductivity class within the lowest permeability layer. The grid size at the top boundary had a dramatic impact on NAPL diffusive flux just after the spill event when the NAPL was present near the ground surface. NAPL evaporation with a fine grid spacing at the top boundary decreased CT mass that reached the water table by 74%, compared to the case with a coarse grid spacing, while barometric pumping had a marginal effect for the case of a continuous NAPL spill scenario considered in this work. For low water infiltration rate scenarios, the distribution of water content prior to a NAPL spill event decreased CT mass that reached the water table by 98% and had a significant impact on the formation of trapped NAPL. For all cases simulated, use of the new constitutive model that allows the formation of residual NAPL increased the amount of NAPL retained in the vadose zone. Density-driven advective gas flow from the ground surface controlled vapor migration in strongly anisotropic layers, causing NAPL mass flux to the lower layer to be reduced. These simulations indicate that consideration of the formation of residual and trapped NAPLs and dynamic boundary conditions (e.g., areas, rates, and periods of different NAPL and water discharge and fluctuations of atmospheric pressure) in the context of full three-phase flow are needed, especially for NAPL spill events at the ground surface. In addition, NAPL evaporation, density-driven gas advection, and NAPL vertical movement enhanced by water flow must be considered in order to predict NAPL distribution and migration in the vadose zone.

Abstract:This work provides an exploratory analysis on the relative importance of various factors controlling the fate and transport of volatile organic contaminants (in this case, TCE) from a DNAPL source zone located below the water table and into the indoor air. The analysis is conducted using the multi-phase compositional model CompFlow Bio, with the base scenario problem geometry reminiscent of a field experiment conducted by Rivett [Rivett, M.O., (1995), Soil-gas signatures from volatile chlorinated solvents: Borden field experiments. Groundwater, 33(1), 84-98.] at the Borden aquifer where groundwater was observed to transport a contaminant plume a substantial distance without vertical mass transport of the contaminant across the capillary fringe and into the vadose zone. Results for the base scenario model indicate that the structure of the permeability field was largely responsible for deflecting the groundwater plume upward towards the capillary fringe, permitting aqueous phase diffusion to transport the TCE into the vadose zone. Alternative permeability realizations, generated as part of a Monte Carlo simulation process, at times deflected the groundwater plume downwards causing the extended thickness of the saturated zone to insulate the vadose zone from exposure to the TCE by upward diffusive transport. Comparison of attenuation coefficients calculated using the CompFlow Bio and Johnson and Ettinger [Johnson, P.C. and Ettinger, R.A., (1991), Heuristic model for predicting the intrusion rate of contaminant vapors into buildings. Environmental Science and Technology, 25, 1445-1452.] heuristic model exhibited fortuitous agreement for the base scenario problem geometry, with this agreement diverging for the alternative permeability realizations as well as when parameters such as the foundation slab fracture aperture, the indoor air pressure drop, the capillary fringe thickness, and the infiltration rate were varied over typical ranges.

Abstract:Predicting the migration behavior of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vapor is essential for the remediation of subsurface contamination such as soil vapor extraction. Previous analytical prediction models of VOCs migration are mostly limited to constant-concentration nonpoint sources in homogeneous soil. Thus, this study presents a novel analytical model for two-dimensional transport of VOCs vapor subjected to multiple time-dependent point sources involving transient diffusion, sorption and degradation in layered unsaturated soils. Two representative time-dependent sources, i.e., an instantaneous source and a finite pulse source, are used to describe the short-term and long-term leakage. Results reveal that soil heterogeneity can cause pollution accumulation, especially in low-diffusivity capillary fringe. The assumption of an equivalent plane source from multiple point sources would significantly overestimate the vapor concentration and the contaminated range. The previous single point source model is no longer inapplicable when the relative distance and/or the release interval between sources is small, giving a strong interaction between multiple sources. Moreover, a faster vapor degradation rate or a higher groundwater level will reduce the area of vapor plume linearly. Hence, close attention should be paid to the time-variation characteristics of multiple sources, the vapor degradation and the groundwater level fluctuation in practice to facilitate soil remediation. The proposed model is a promising tool for addressing the above issue.

Abstract:Soils contaminated by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are subject to significant non-point source (NPS) pollution during rainfall events. Recent studies revealed that the classic enrichment ratio (ER) approach may not be applicable to PAHs. This study developed a model to estimate the ER of PAHs which innovatively applies the fugacity concept. The ER model has been validated with experimental data, which suggested that the transport of PAHs not only depends on their physicochemical properties, but on the sediment composition and how the composition evolves during the event. The modeling uncertainty was systematically examined, and found to be highly compound-dependent. Based on the ER model, a strategy was proposed to practically evaluate the potential NPS loading of PAHs in watersheds with heterogeneous soils. The study results have important implications to modeling and managing the NPS pollution of PAHs (or other chemicals alike) at a watershed scale.

Abstract:The transport and distribution of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid(DNAPL) in subsurface media are affected by many factors,which include DNAPL physical and chemical properties,soil properties,and leakage conditions,etc.The structure of multiphase flow can be more complex due to the effects of porous media heterogeneity.In this study,the Monte Carlo method is applied to a synthetic case in an effort to investigate the effect of the spatial variability of permeability on the fate and transport of DNAPL contaminant plumes.Numerical results show that the lower the leakage rate,the higher the heterogonous effects are on DNAPL migration in the case of fixed total leakage flux.Since the transport of DNAPL is affected by the gravity,for both centroid of the plume(first moment) and the distribution of the plume(second moment),the variability in the vertical direction is found to be greater than that in the horizontal direction.
