Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), a composite material with high corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio, has been increasingly used in reinforced concrete structures. The effectiveness of the structures depends on the bonding behavior between FRP composites and concrete structures. Therefore, detection of the debonding between the FRP materials and the hosting concrete structure is of great importance to ensure the structural safety. This paper proposes a stress wave-based active sensing approach to monitor the debonding process of FRP bar with the hosting concrete structure. One shear-type lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patch bonded on the outer surface of the FRP bar was used as an actuator to generate stress wave. Two smart aggregates (SAs), which were fabricated by sandwiching a shear type PZT patch between two protection marble pieces, were embedded in the hosting concrete structure to detect the wave response. The occurrence of debonding between the FRP bar and the hosting concrete structure attenuates the wave propagation. An FRP bar reinforced concrete specimen was designed and fabricated in laboratory. A pullout test was conducted to simulate different degrees of debonding damage. The attenuation of the stress wave due to debonding was clearly observed from the signal received by SAs in both time and frequency domain. Furthermore, a damage index based on wavelet packet analysis was developed to evaluate the debonding status. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has potentials to detect different degrees of debonding damage of FRP bar reinforced concrete composite structures.

Abstract:The high incidence of debonding as a failure mode in FRP-strengthened structures highlights the importance of regular inspections of the bond layer for any discontinuity. In contrary to most previous studies, which focus on the linear features of waves like amplitude and velocity, the present study utilises a novel collinear wave mixing technique for the generation of mixed harmonics of surface guided waves for debond characterisation. Experimental study is conducted in which a particular surface guided mode, sensitive to bond layer, is excited using wedge transducers. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed to understand the nonlinear interaction of surface guided waves with debonding, and the results obtained are compared with those obtained from the experimental results in both time and frequency domains. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental ones. Later, extensive parametric studies are conducted on the validated model by changing the debond size. A damage index is proposed that rely on the band frequency amplitude of fundamental and higher order mixed harmonics paving the way for baseline-free debond quantification. The damage index (DI) exhibited a consistently increasing trend with debond size. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted by increasing the debond size and comparing the relative parameter values of linear features (scattered amplitude and change in time of arrival) with the proposed damage index. The analysis results revealed that the proposed DI is more sensitive to the debond size than the conventional linear parameters that also requires pristine condition data. Thus, the study offers valuable insights into the collinear wave mixing phenomenon in FRP strengthened RC structures and proposes an efficient and practical technique for debond detection in the field.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates are widely used to retrofit or reinforce steel structures, and the debonding damage between the steel structure and the CFRP plate is a typical failure in strengthening steel structures. This paper proposes a new approach to detecting debonding between a steel beam and a reinforcing CFRP plate by using removable lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based transducers and active sensing. The removable PZT-based transducers are used to implement the active sensing approach, in which one transducer, as an actuator, is used to generate stress wave, and another transducer, as a sensor, is used to detect the stress wave that propagates across the bonding between the steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate. The bonding condition significantly influences the received sensor signal, and a wavelet-packet-based energy index (WPEI) is used to quantify the energy of the received signal to evaluate the severity of debonding between the steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate. To validate the proposed approach, experimental studies were performed, and two removable PZT-based transducers were designed and fabricated to detect the debonding between a steel beam and the reinforcing CRFP plate. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method in detecting the debonding between a steel beam and the reinforcing CFRP plate using removable PZT-based transducers.

Abstract:The application of reinforced concrete (RC) beam with near-surface mounted (NSM) pre-stressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates has been increasingly widespread in civil engineering. However, debonding failure occurs easily in the early loading stage because of the prestress change at the end of CFRP plate. Therefore, it is important to find reliable, convenient and economical technical means to closely monitor the secure bonding between CFRP and concrete. In this paper, an active sensing approach for generating and sensing stress wave by embedded smart aggregates (SAs) is proposed, which provides a guarantee for the secure connection between CFRP and concrete. Two specimens with different non-pre-stressed bond lengths were fabricated in the laboratory. Six SAs were installed at different positions of the structure to monitor the degree of debonding damage during the loading process. The experiments showed that the optimal length of non-pre-stressed CFRP bond section (300 mm) can significantly improve the load characteristics and enhance the service performance of the structure. The theoretical analysis of wavelet packet shows that increasing the length of non-pre-stressed CFRP bond section can slow down the occurrence and propagation of debonding cracks. The debonding crack in the tension end region is earlier than that in the bond end region. The research results reflect that the developed approach can monitor the damage process caused by debonding cracks and provide early warning for the initial damage and the debonding failure.

Abstract:Interface bonding conditions between concrete and steel materials play key roles in ensuring the composite effect and load-carrying capacity of concrete–steel composite structures such as concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) members in practice. A method using both surface wave and electromechanical impedance (EMI) measurement for detecting the existence and the location of inaccessible interface debonding defects between the concrete core and steel tube in CFST members using piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches as actuators and sensors is proposed. A rectangular CFST specimen with two artificially mimicked interface debonding defects was experimentally verified using PZT patches as the actuator and sensor. By comparing the surface wave measurement of PZT sensors at different surface wave travelling paths under both a continuous sinusoidal signal and a 10-period sinusoidal windowed signal, three potential interface debonding defects are quickly identified. Furthermore, the accurate locations of the three detected potential interface debonding defects are determined with the help of EMI measurements from a number of additional PZT sensors around the three potential interface debonding defects. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed interface debonding detection method is verified with a destructive observation by removing the local steel tube at the three detected interface debonding locations. The observation results show that the three detected interface debonding defects are two mimicked interface debonding defects, and an unexpected debonding defect occurred spontaneously due to concrete shrinkage in the past one and a half years before conducting the test. Results in this study indicate that the proposed method can be an efficient and accurate approach for the detection of unknown interface debonding defects in existing CFST members.

Abstract:Interfacial debonding identification within reinforced concrete (RC) structures is an ongoing and critical issue in structural health monitoring. In this paper, a novel nonlinear harmonics-based method for identifying, localizing, and quantifying interfacial debonding in RC beams is presented. The mode conversion phenomenon and contact acoustic nonlinearity of guided waves at interfacial debonding region are thoroughly examined using a combined theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigation, which sheds light on the propagation behavior of the first and second harmonics in RC beams with single interfacial debonding. Inspired by the phase-reversal approach, the temporal separation of the second harmonic is achieved by integrating the excitation results from both the original and phase-reversed signals. The theoretical investigation is conducted to correlate the arrival time of harmonics with structural damage, and its accuracy is validated by the numerical group velocity inversion and wavenumber-frequency analysis. The experimental evaluation, involving six RC beam specimens with varying debonding length, further demonstrates the validity of the method for precise interfacial debonding identification. The experimental and numerical evidence confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method, highlighting its potential for practical application.

Abstract:Concrete reinforcement is essential for ensuring the safety and durability of concrete structures. Bonding steel plates to reinforce concrete is widely used to renovate or strengthen concrete beam structures. Due to construction quality and the influence of factors such as environment and fatigue, debonding often occurs between the steel plate and concrete, making monitoring and early warning after concrete structure reinforcement challenging. This paper proposes a novel approach to monitor the degree of debonding between the steel plate and concrete beam using active sensing technology. The method uses lead zirconate titanate (PZT) as an actuator to generate stress waves. It prepares strip sensors with polyvinylidene fluoride as the sensing element to monitor stress waves passing through the steel plate and concrete beam. The monitoring system detects the degree of debonding between the steel plate and the concrete beam by monitoring the change in surface voltage of the sensor. Experiments show that the degree of debonding significantly correlates with the received voltage signal; the higher the debonding, the larger the received voltage signal. It is also observed that, at the same degree of debonding, the actuator and sensor attachment position have a particular impact on the received voltage signal. Through experiments and numerical simulation analysis, it is found that when the sensor is attached to the left side of the steel plate, that is, the bonded section of the steel plate, the amplitude of the voltage signal collected by the dynamic information acquisition system is the smallest, i.e., V_debonded section > V_middle > V_bonded section. Based on the above research, the active sensing technology proposed in this paper has good sensitivity to the degree of debonding between the steel plate and concrete. It is expected to become an effective monitoring and evaluation method for the degree of debonding between steel plates and concrete.

Abstract:Recently, the concrete-filled double-steel-plate composite walls (CFDSPCWs) have been widely applied in ultra-high-rise civil infrastructure due to their excellent mechanical properties. It is urgent to develop the nondestructive testing method for the debonding detection of CFDSPCWs to guarantee the mechanical performance and structural safety of civil structures. In this study, the feasibility of multichannel analysis of surface waves method (MASW)-based interfacial debonding defection for CFDSPCWs was investigated. The 2D and 3D finite-element models of CFDSPCWs were established, and the detailed wave propagation process in CFDSPCWs was numerically simulated. The influence of the dimension of CFDSPCWs and thickness of the steel plates on the wave fields in CFDSPCWs with and without debonding defects was discussed respectively. The relationship between the excitation signal frequency and the geometry variation of CFDSPCWs was analyzed in depth. The numerical finding indicates that the interfacial debonding defects in CFDSPCWs can be detected using the proposed method. The research findings can provide referential significance to the practical application of interfacial debonding defection for CFDSPCWs using the MASW method.

Abstract:Debonding is one of the most dangerous damages in honeycomb sandwich structures, which causes stiffness reduction and is invisible from the surface. Guided wave-based non-destructive evaluation is a promising approach with high sensitivity and high efficiency for debonding detection. A torsional guided wave method is proposed to inspect debonding damage in honeycomb sandwich beams, which is proved to be better in damage location for the beams in the paper than the flexural wave used before. The honeycomb heterogeneity effect on the interaction between guided waves and debonding are first investigated by finite element methods. Then the ability of torsional waves to determine debonding locations and sizes is discussed in detail. Finally, in order to verify the proposed method, experiments are carried out to inspect debonding damage with two sizes.

Abstract:Guided waves can propagate from flat plates to curved structures and carry structural health information. In this paper, an ultrasonic guided wave inspection method is proposed for detecting damages in curved parts made of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs), such as hat-stringer-stiffened panel. By collecting full wavefield information, we obtain the standing wave information formed by the interaction between guided waves and damage. The interaction mechanism between guided waves and damage is simulated through finite element simulation, and the wavefield curvature imaging algorithm is used to generate a damage image in the curved area. Furthermore, a specimen with delamination damages is fabricated, and full wavefield information is collected through a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). We then use the proposed imaging algorithm to detect delamination damages of different sizes. The experimental results were consistent with the simulation results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method. Notably, the technology combines the advantages of guided waves and SLDV, which can obtain full wavefield information without contact, including damage-related characteristics. This work provides a convenient and comprehensive method for collecting wavefield information on complex curved CFRP parts for structural health monitoring, which would significantly improve quality control for CFRP components in various fields.

Abstract:For reinforced concrete structures, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer rebars to replace the steel reinforcement is a topic that is receiving increasing attention, especially where corrosion is a serious issue. However, fiber-reinforced polymer rebar–reinforced concrete always carries the risk of structural failure initiated from the debonding damage that might occur at the reinforcement–concrete interface. This study employed an electro-mechanical impedance–based structural health monitoring technique by applying lead–zirconate–titanate ceramic patches to detect the debonding damage of a carbon fiber–reinforced polymer rebar reinforced concrete. In the experimental study, a carbon fiber–reinforced polymer rebar reinforced concrete specimen was fabricated and it was subjected to a pullout test to initiate the debonding damage at the reinforcement–concrete interface. The impedance and admittance signatures were measured from an impedance analyzer according to the different debonding conditions between the reinforcement and the concrete. Statistical damage metrics, root-mean-square deviation and mean absolute percentage deviation, were used to quantify the changes in impedance signatures measured at the lead–zirconate–titanate patches due to debonding conditions. The results illustrated the capability of the electro-mechanical impedance–based structural health monitoring technique for detecting the debonding damage of fiber-reinforced polymer rebar–reinforced concrete structures.

Abstract:The favorable contribution of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) sheets to the shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is widely acknowledged. Nonetheless, the premature debonding of EB-FRP materials remains a limitation for widespread on-site application. Once debonding appears, it is highly likely that brittle failure will occur in the strengthened RC structural member; therefore, it is essential to be alerted of the debonding incident immediately and to intervene. This may not be always possible, particularly if the EB-FRP strengthened RC member is located in an inaccessible area for fast inspection, such as bridge piers. The ability to identify debonding immediately via remote control would contribute to the safer application of the technique by eliminating the negative outcomes of debonding. The current investigation involves the detection of EB-FRP sheet debonding using a remotely controlled electromechanical admittance (EMA)-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system that utilizes piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensors. An experimental investigation on RC T-beams strengthened for shear with EB-FRP sheets has been performed. The PZT sensors are installed at various locations on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets to evaluate the SHM system's ability to detect debonding. Additionally, strain gauges were attached on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets near the PZT sensors to monitor the deformation of the FRP and draw useful conclusions through comparison of the results to the wave-based data provided by the PZT sensors. The experimental results indicate that although EB-FRP sheets increase the shear resistance of the RC T-beams, premature failure occurs due to sheet debonding. The applied SHM system can sufficiently identify the debonding in real-time and appears to be feasible for on-site applications.
Surface strain distribution method for delamination detection using piezoelectric actuators and sensors

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study into detection of delamination in composite beams by using surface strain distribution method. Two piezoelectric (PZT) patches were surfaced bonded to each composite beam; one was used as actuator to excite the beam structure whereas the other was custom-designed and used as sensor. The custom-fabricated PZT sensor has 15 evenly-distributed electrode strips which enable measurement of 15 surface strain readings in the form of electric charge output. The effects of various parameters, e.g., vibration modes, excitation frequency and sensor debonding, on damage detection sensitivity were investigated. It is shown that the variation in sensor charge output distribution can be an effective indicator of the presence, size and location of localized delamination in composite beam and debonding between a sensor and its host beam.

Abstract:<p>Guided wavefields in composite structures carry a wealth of information about wavefield anomalies from damage–wave interactions. Although such anomalies can be used for damage detection, they are easily masked by incident waves from actuators and reflected waves from structural boundaries. This research presents a concept of guided wavefield curvature for the detection of structural damage. Wavefield curvature analysis is able to highlight the amplitudes of local anomalies in the wavefield signals associated with damage. A wavefield curvature imaging algorithm is developed for visualizing invisible damage in composite structures. The algorithm is first verified by detecting delamination in a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate and then applied for detection of debonding in a honeycomb sandwich panel. In the experiments, wavefields are generated by a PZT transducer and are then registered by a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. The experimental results accord well with the actual locations, sizes, and shapes of the delamination and debonding, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for the detection of invisible damage in composite structures.</p>

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. The debonding between glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars and concrete significantly reduces the bond strength and jeopardizes the safety and durability of GFRP-reinforced concrete (GFRP-RC) structures. As a result, it is imperative to monitor the structural integrity of infrastructures being built using these composite materials in structural elements during their service lives. Previous studies have primarily focused on artificially induced debonding scenarios for guided wave (GW)-based monitoring, which has resulted in an inability to capture debonding events that arise naturally due to external loads. Furthermore, flexural bond test investigations simulating real loading scenarios in GFRP-RC structures have not been linked with acoustic emission (AE) and GW monitoring. The present study addresses these research gaps by comprehensively examining the flexural bond integrity in GFRP-RC structural elements subjected to realistic loading conditions using a hybrid approach combining GW and AE as active and passive structural health monitoring techniques, respectively. A series of bond tests, conforming to RILEM specifications, have been performed to investigate various parameters (including rebar surface characteristics, embedment length, and confinement conditions) that affect the flexural bond degradation response of GFRP-RC members. Damage indices based on GW and AE signal parameters have been developed to evaluate the characteristics of confined and unconfined specimens distinctly. It has been observed from the test results that the L (0,3) GW mode is more sensitive to debonding than other modes and that a threshold of 25% has been established for the GW damage index to denote significant bond damage. Furthermore, AE damage indices have provided valuable insights into concrete damage, including splitting and damage at the rebar-concrete interface. Thus, a thorough understanding of bond deterioration in GFRP-RC structures has been developed by combining GW and AE health monitoring techniques, with implications for enhancing structural safety and durability.

Abstract:In Part I of this study, the benchmark test and signal calibration of contact and non-contact measurement to quantitatively assess the variation and difference between contact and non-contact measurements. Based on the research findings of Part I, non-contact multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) technique and novel impact acoustic vibration method are proposed in Part II of this study. Aided by scanning Doppler laser vibrometer and a combination of conventional and high-frequency microphones, the feasibility of non-contact non-destructive test (NDT) for SCCS is validated using experimental measurements on steel plate-bonded reinforced concrete (RC) cube with preset interfacial debondings in various dimensions. Since the steel plate at the debonding regions loses the constraint of concrete core, its vibration mode changes obviously. Experimental observations indicate that the accurate location of interfacial debonding can be accurately recognized by non-contact stress wave measurement. Besides, the amplitude of impact-acoustic vibration signal increases remarkably while interfacial debonding occurs, and its frequency spectrum is obviously different from that of healthy regions. Contact NDT techniques, including the impact-response test and impact-transmission test, are also performed for further comparison. Research findings show that the non-contact vibration measurement exhibits high efficiency. More importantly, it can eliminate the test error induced by the additional mass and sensor sticking process. Difference in signal characteristics and imaging precision of contact and non-contact measurement is discussed in detail. In contrast, damage nephogram resolution based on signal amplitude is higher than that of the dominant frequency. Combined with Part Ⅰ of this study, which focuses on benchmark test and signal calibration, the research findings in this study can lay a solid foundation for improving the detection accuracy of interfacial debondings in SCCS using non-contact NDT techniques.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Complete understanding of the adhesive curing effect of a bonded piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensor on the electromechanical admittance (EMA, inverse of impedance) facilitates the accurate diagnosis of structural damages when employing the impedance technique for structural health monitoring. This article analytically and experimentally investigated the curing effect of adhesive layer on the EMA-based concrete structural damage detection. Curing effect was theoretically incorporated into shearing mechanism of adhesive layer to formulate a new one-dimensional PZT-structural impedance model. Analytical analysis of the curing effect on the EMA signature as well as the EMA-based damage diagnosis was calculably interpreted through the model. Proof-of-concept experiment was performed on testing a four-point bending reinforced concrete (RC) beam bonded with multiple PZT patches under adhesive curing. Experimental results demonstrated that singular shift in the EMA spectra under adhesive curing could be turned into three typical shifts when structural damage occurred, which cogently validated the analytical results. Quantifiable signal index further provided useful information for the identification of crack occurrence, progression, and reinforcement yielding of the RC beam. Results of this study potentially promoted the real-life engineering applications of impedance technique inclusive of deficient adhesive condition.

Abstract:Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials have been increasingly used for strengthening concrete members. The strengthening performance and structural capacity of FRP reinforced concrete (RC) structures are highly influenced by the interfacial bonding behaviour between FRP and concrete. A reliable technique for debonding detection, especially at its early age, is essential to ensure the strengthening efficacy and avoid premature failure of FRP RC structures. This study develops a stress wave-based sensing approach to quantitatively monitor the debonding process by using surface mounted piezoceramic-based transducers (also called as smart aggregates SAs). The scanning wave signals in swept frequency mode and single frequency mode were utilised in experimental and numerical methods, respectively. Both results showed that when the stress wave propagated through the FRP-concrete interface, the wave energy attenuation increased as the debonding developed. To quantify the debonding level and provide assessment of the interface condition, a wavelet packet-based debonding index was established and its validity was verified by the data retrieved from digital image correlation measurement. The proposed method has potential for fast determination or real-time monitoring of FRP-concrete interfacial debonding for both research and field applications.

Abstract:Multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method has exhibited broad application prospects in the nondestructive detection of interfacial debonding in steel-concrete composite structures (SCCS). However, due to the structural diversity of SCCS and the high stealthiness of interfacial debonding defects, the feasibility of MASW method needs to be investigated in depth. In this study, synthetic parametric study on MASW nondestructive debonding detection for SCCSs is performed. The aim is to quantitatively analyze influential factors with respect to structural composition of SCCS and MASW measurement mode. First, stress wave composition and propagation process in SCCS are studied utilizing 2D numerical simulation. For structural composition in SCCS, the thickness variation of steel plate, concrete core, and debonding defects are discussed. To determine the most appropriate sensor arrangement for MASW measurement, the effects of spacing and number of observation points, along with distances between excitation points, nearest boundary, as well as the first observation point, are analyzed individually. The influence of signal type and frequency of transient excitation on dispersion figures from forwarding analysis is studied to determine the most suitable excitation signal. The findings from this study can provide important theoretical guidance for MASW-based interfacial debonding detection for SCCS. Furthermore, they can be instrumental in optimizing both the sensor layout design and signal choice for experimental validation.
