Abstract:China has been developed into one of the most active regions in terms of both fundamental and applied research on magnesium (Mg) and its alloys in the world from a solid base laid by its prominent metallurgist and materials scientists over the past decades. Nowadays, a large number of young-generation researchers have been inspired by their predecessors and become the key participants in the fields of Mg alloys, which consequently led to the establishment of China Youth Scholar Society for Magnesium Alloys Research in 2015. Since then, the first two China Youth Scholars Symposiums on Mg Alloys Research had been held at Harbin (2015) and Chongqing (2016) China, respectively. A number of crucial research interests related to fundamental and applied Mg research were discussed at the conferences and summarized in this short perspective, aiming to boost far-reaching initiatives for development of new Mg-based materials to satisfy the requirements for a broad range of industrial employments. Herein, four main aspects are included as follows: i) Plastic deformation mechanism and strengthening strategy, ii) Design and development of new Mg-based materials, iii) Key service properties, and iv) New processing technologies.

Abstract:Mg alloy products are mostly made by casting,which allows the manufacturing of parts with complex geometries.However,parts manufactured by forming have better mechanical properties and fine-grained microstructures without pores.The International Magnesium Association indicates that a key problem is to develop new wrought Mg alloys and processing technologies to increase the applications of Mg alloys.This paper introduces several research developments for wrought Mg alloys worldwide,as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the Chinese research.Analyses show that Chinese researchers should develop new technologies to fabricate wrought Mg alloys with better mechanical properties,especially Mg alloy sheets for worldwide sales.

Abstract:The research status of Mg-Nd magnesium alloy is reviewed.The influence of rare earth Nd on microstructure,precipitation behavior,mechanical property and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is introduced.The application prospect of magnesium alloys containing Nd is presented.It is proposed that the two main research directions of Mg-Nd magnesium alloys are heat-resistant magnesium alloy with high performance for special use and low cost magnesium alloy for commercial use.

Abstract:The research study explored the impact of magnesium on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Mn alloy in both its as-cast and homogenized states. Various analytical techniques including optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, Vickers microhardness testing, and electrical conductivity measurements were employed for the analysis of the Al-Mg-Mn alloy. The findings reveal that the primary phases present in the as-cast alloy consist of α-Al, β ( ), and . As the magnesium content increases, notable alterations are observed in the diffraction angle θ, inter-planar spacing d, lattice constant a, and the solute magnesium concentration in the α-Al matrix. In instances where the Mg content is low, the grain size and distribution in both the as-cast and homogenized alloys appear coarse and uneven. However, as the magnesium content rises, there is a reduction in the primary dendrite length and columnar crystal zone in the as-cast alloy, alongside enhanced development of secondary dendrites and gradual diminishment of the grain size. This reduction in grain size is particularly pronounced in the homogenized alloy. Additionally, the hardness of both the as-cast and homogenized alloys experiences an increase, while the electrical conductivity undergoes a decrease with escalating magnesium content. Notably, in comparison with the as-cast alloy, the hardness and electrical conductivity of the homogenized alloy exhibit enhancements. The outcomes of this study offer valuable insights for the subsequent processing and deformation applications of the Al-Mg-Mn alloy.

Abstract:In this paper,new Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-xRE series of magnesium alloys,where x=0.4,0.8,1.2,1.6,and 2.0 wt%,were developed on the basis of the commercial AM60B magnesium alloy.The microstructure,mechanical properties,fracture behavior, castability,and heat treatment process of these alloys were investigated in order to obtain an alloy with high strength and toughness. Using Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-1.6RE alloy some automobile wheel castings were produced by gravity casting,and the surface treatment technology of the wheels was studied preliminarily.

Abstract:As the lightest structural metal and one of the most abundant metallic elements on earth, magnesium (Mg) has been used as an “industrial metal” for lightweighting in the transportation and electronics industries, in addition to other traditional applications in aluminum alloying, steel desulfurization and protective anodes. In recent years, research has shown significant potential for Mg to become a “technology metal” in a variety of new applications from energy storage/battery to biomedical products. However, global Mg production has shown steady but moderate growth in the last three decades. Mg applications as an industry metal are still limited due to some sustainability concerns of primary Mg production, as well as a number of technical issues related to the structural and corrosion performance of commercial Mg alloys. New Mg applications as an industrial or technology metal face tremendous technical challenges, which have been reflected in the intensified global research efforts in the last twenty years. This paper will review some past and present applications, and discuss future opportunities and challenges for Mg research and applications for the global Mg community.

Abstract:An Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy has high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, fracture toughness and fatigue resistance. It is one of the most important structural materials in the fields of aviation, aerospace, weapons and transportation; in particular, it plays a huge role in the field of aerospace. In order to optimize the strength, toughness and corrosion properties of an Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy, the focus of research on this alloy has always been on the alloying process. The effects of the main alloying elements, trace alloying elements and rare earth elements on the microstructure and properties of Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys are briefly introduced in this paper, and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:The researches on development, application and solidification microstructures of high performance magnesium (Mg) alloys have received considerable interest recently. The solidification microstructures of Mg alloys can be effectively controlled by using directional solidification technology, rapid solidification technology and the application of external field during solidification, and thus the enhanced comprehensive mechanical properties of the materials are obtained. The current researches on solidification microstructure controlling of high performance Mg alloys by using directional solidification technology, rapid solidification technology and electromagnetic stirring were reviewed. Finally, the development trend on the controlling of solidification microstructure was proposed.

Abstract:The research status of the method and probability of welding magnesium to aluminum were introduced in recent years, in which the characteristics, applications and evolution of microstructure of the joint were analyzed. It is concluded that controlling the composition, size, morphology and distribution of the intermetallic compounds between magnesium and aluminum is the key factor to obtain the high performance dissimilar joint. The development trend of joining magnesium to aluminum was forecasted and it is considered that the fusion welding of magnesium and aluminum may be an ideal method which would be widely used but need to further study.
