Abstract:As the lightest structural metal and one of the most abundant metallic elements on earth, magnesium (Mg) has been used as an “industrial metal” for lightweighting in the transportation and electronics industries, in addition to other traditional applications in aluminum alloying, steel desulfurization and protective anodes. In recent years, research has shown significant potential for Mg to become a “technology metal” in a variety of new applications from energy storage/battery to biomedical products. However, global Mg production has shown steady but moderate growth in the last three decades. Mg applications as an industry metal are still limited due to some sustainability concerns of primary Mg production, as well as a number of technical issues related to the structural and corrosion performance of commercial Mg alloys. New Mg applications as an industrial or technology metal face tremendous technical challenges, which have been reflected in the intensified global research efforts in the last twenty years. This paper will review some past and present applications, and discuss future opportunities and challenges for Mg research and applications for the global Mg community.

Abstract:China has been developed into one of the most active regions in terms of both fundamental and applied research on magnesium (Mg) and its alloys in the world from a solid base laid by its prominent metallurgist and materials scientists over the past decades. Nowadays, a large number of young-generation researchers have been inspired by their predecessors and become the key participants in the fields of Mg alloys, which consequently led to the establishment of China Youth Scholar Society for Magnesium Alloys Research in 2015. Since then, the first two China Youth Scholars Symposiums on Mg Alloys Research had been held at Harbin (2015) and Chongqing (2016) China, respectively. A number of crucial research interests related to fundamental and applied Mg research were discussed at the conferences and summarized in this short perspective, aiming to boost far-reaching initiatives for development of new Mg-based materials to satisfy the requirements for a broad range of industrial employments. Herein, four main aspects are included as follows: i) Plastic deformation mechanism and strengthening strategy, ii) Design and development of new Mg-based materials, iii) Key service properties, and iv) New processing technologies.

Abstract:China is currently vigorously implementing the "energy conservation and emission reduction" and "dual carbon" strategies. As the most resource-advantaged light metal material in China, Magnesium (Mg) alloy is progressively expanding its application in automobile, rail transportation, aerospace, medical, and electronic products. Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Australian National University have conducted extensive research on the preparation, properties, and processes of Mg alloys. In the past 20 years, the proportion of Mg alloy in the automotive industry has gradually expanded, whereas currently the design and development of Mg alloy parts for automobiles has rarely been reported. Thus, the application models and typical parts cases of Mg alloy are summarized mainly from the four systems of the whole vehicle (body system, chassis system, powertrain system, interior, and exterior system). Subsequently, two actual original equipment manufacturers (OEM) cases are used to introduce the development logic of reliable die-cast Mg alloy, including forward design, formability analysis, process design analysis, structural redesign, manufacturing, and testing, aiming to share the methods, processes, and focus of attention of automotive OEMs for developing Mg alloy parts to enhance the confidence and motivation of applying Mg alloy in automotive field. Eventually, the multiple challenges faced by Mg alloy materials are sorted out and how to face these challenges are discussed. National policies and regulations, environmental protection and energy saving, and consumer demand will continue to promote the application of Mg.

Abstract:With the increasingly excellent performance of magnesium alloy materials, magnesium alloys are increasingly widely used under the urgent need for weight reduction in aerospace applications. However, due to the severe aviation environment, the strength, corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity of magnesium alloy materials need to be further improved. Many scholars are committed to studying higher comprehensive mechanical properties. Besides, they have studied surface treatment processes with space application characteristics, such as high emissivity oxidation and high anti-corrosion electroplating. To further improve the safety and reliability of magnesium alloys and expand their applications, this paper discusses several kinds of magnesium alloys and summarizes their research progress. The whole manuscript should be revised by an expert who has more experience on English writing. At the same time, the surface treatments of magnesium alloy materials for aerospace are analyzed. Besides, the application of magnesium alloy in aerospace field is summarized. With the in-depth research of many scholars, the improvement of material properties and the development of surface protection and functional technology, it is believed that magnesium alloys will be used in more and more aerospace applications and make more contributions to the aerospace field.

Abstract:Mg alloy products are mostly made by casting,which allows the manufacturing of parts with complex geometries.However,parts manufactured by forming have better mechanical properties and fine-grained microstructures without pores.The International Magnesium Association indicates that a key problem is to develop new wrought Mg alloys and processing technologies to increase the applications of Mg alloys.This paper introduces several research developments for wrought Mg alloys worldwide,as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the Chinese research.Analyses show that Chinese researchers should develop new technologies to fabricate wrought Mg alloys with better mechanical properties,especially Mg alloy sheets for worldwide sales.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys, as the lightest metal structural materials, are significantly attractive for lightweight applications. However, the extrudability of commercial Mg alloys is obviously poor compared with Al alloys, which has greatly restricted their widespread application so far. To further expand the industry uptake of Mg alloy extrusion components, development of the low-cost, high speed extrudable Mg alloys with good mechanical performance is strongly desired. In this review, the factors determining the extrudability of Mg alloys are critically analysed. Besides, recent research highlights on high speed extrudable Mg alloys are systematically reviewed from the perspective of the alloying systems, specifically focusing on Mg–Al, Mg–Zn, Mg–Sn, Mg–Bi and Mg–RE based alloys. Furthermore, the new alloy design concepts and novel extrusion processing routes are critically analysed and summarized, and also the recommendations for future research prospects for high speed extrudable Mg alloys are also suggested. We hope this review will inspire new ideas on both composition design and technology innovation for developing high speed extrudable Mg alloys with excellent strength-ductility synergy.

Abstract:In the past two years, significant progresses have been achieved in high-performance cast and wrought magnesium and magnesium alloys, magnesium-based composites, advanced cast technologies, advanced processing technologies, and functional magnesium materials, such as Mg ion batteries, hydrogen storage Mg materials, bio-magnesium alloys, etc. Great contributions to the development of new magnesium alloys and their processing technologies have been made by Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, Queensland University, Brunel University, etc. This review paper is aimed to summarize the latest important advances in cast magnesium alloys, wrought magnesium alloys and functional magnesium materials worldwide in 2018–2019, including both the development of new materials and the innovation of their processing technologies. Based on the issues and challenges identified here, some future research directions are suggested, including further development of high-performance magnesium alloys having high strength and superior plasticity together with high corrosion resistance and low cost, and fundamental research on the phase diagram, diffusion, precipitation, etc., as well as the development of advanced welding and joining technology.

Abstract:Rare earth element played key role and validity in magnesium alloy were summarized. The behaviors of rare earth element in magnesium alloy were reviewed based on physic-chemistry of metallurgical process. The properties and application of a series of important RE-containing magnesium alloys,i.e.,Mg-Zn-RE,Mg-Al-RE and Mg-RE alloys,were introduced in the company with the achievement of RE-Mg alloy in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry.It was emphasized that the RE-containing magnesium alloys exhibited the excellent comprehensive properties,especially,in high strength/toughness,heat/creep resistance and corrosion-resistance. RE Mg alloy should be one of the important direction in the field of development of advanced magnesium alloy.

Abstract:To further expand industrial application of Magnesium alloys, developments of the low-cost, Rare-Earth free Magnesium alloys with high strength were strongly desired. In this review, recent researches on the Rare-Earth free Magnesium alloys will be critically reviewed from the viewpoint of the novel alloying designs, e.g. Magnesium–Zinc, Magnesium–Tin and Magnesium–Calcium systems, and advanced processing technologies to summarize the experimental progresses in pursuing high strength. Considering the large strength gap between the current Rare-Earth free Magnesium alloys and state-of-the-art Magnesium-Rare-Earth alloy or high strength Aluminum alloy, the new strengthening mechanism, such as the solute clustering which was recently observed in Magnesium-Rare-Earth alloys and the other Rare-Earth-free Magnesium systems, was suggested. Accordingly, the new alloy design and processing routes, and also the future research directions for Rare-Earth-free Magnesium alloys would be proposed.

Current Research Activities of Biomedical Magnesium Alloys in China

Abstract:The potential biomedical application of magnesium alloys as bioabsorbable / biodegradable implants in the human body has been extensively studied worldwide, and becomes an emerging and promising application direction. The author served as the chairman in two recent conferences relating to biomedical magnesium alloys: (1) the 12th Annual Conference on Biomaterials in December 2009, organized by the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, and (2), a symposium on Biodegradable Metallic Materials in May 2010 at Peking University. Based on the papers presented in these conferences (about 50 in each), the frontier research activities of biomedical magnesium alloys in China for orthopedic and cardiovascular implants will be systematically summarized and comprehensively reviewed in this paper [1]. The research highlights the alloying system design, novel structure, degradation rate control, and surface modification methods; results will be demonstrated via plenty of in vitro and in vivo study data.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys remain critical in the context of light-weighting and advanced devices. The increased utilisation of magnesium (Mg) each year reveals growing demand for its Mg-based alloys. Additive manufacturing (AM) provides the possibility to directly manufacture components in net-shape, providing new possibilities and applications for the use of Mg-alloys, and new prospects in the utilisation of novel physical structures made possible from ‘3D printing’. The review herein seeks to holistically explore the additive manufacturing of Mg-alloys to date, including a synopsis of processes used and properties measured (with a comparison to conventionally prepared Mg-alloys). The challenges and possibilities of AM Mg-alloys are critically elaborated for the field of mechanical metallurgy.

Abstract:During the past decades, with the increasing demands in lightweight structural materials, Mg alloys with low density and high performance have been extensively investigated and partly applied in some industries. Especially when rare earth (RE) elements are added as major alloying elements to Mg alloys, the alloy strength and creep resistance are greatly improved, which have promoted several series of Mg-RE alloys. This paper reviews the progress and developments of high-performance Mg-RE alloys in recent years with emphasis on cast alloys. The main contents include the alloy design, melt purification, grain refinement, castability, novel liquid casting and semisolid forming approaches, and the industrial applications or trials made of Mg-RE alloys. The review will provide insights for future developments of new alloys, techniques and applications of Mg alloys.
