Abstract:Objective.We designed a geometrical solution for a small animal in-beam positron emission tomography (PET) scanner to be used in the project SIRMIO (Small animal proton irradiator for research in molecular image-guided radiation-oncology). The system is based on 56 scintillator blocks of pixelated LYSO crystals. The crystals are arranged providing a pyramidal-step shape to optimize the geometrical coverage in a spherical configuration.Approach.Different arrangements have been simulated and compared in terms of spatial resolution and sensitivity. The chosen setup enables us to reach a good trade-off between a solid angle coverage and sufficient available space for the integration of additional components of the first design prototype of the SIRMIO platform. The possibility of moving the mouse holder inside the PET scanner furthermore allows for achieving the optimum placement of the irradiation area for all the possible tumor positions in the body of the mouse. The work also includes a study of the scintillator material where LYSO and GAGG are compared with a focus on the random coincidence noise due to the natural radioactivity of Lutetium in LYSO, justifying the choice of LYSO for the development of the final system.Main results.The best imaging performance can be achieved with a sub-millimeter spatial resolution and sensitivity of 10% in the center of the scanner, as verified in thorough simulations of point sources. The simulation of realistic irradiation scenarios of proton beams in PMMA targets with/without air gaps indicates the ability of the proposed PET system to detect range shifts down to 0.2 mm.Significance.The presented results support the choice of the identified optimal design for a novel spherical in-beam PET scanner which is currently under commissioning for application to small animal proton and light ion irradiation, and which might find also application, e.g. for biological image-guidance in x-ray irradiation.

Abstract:PET has become a powerful tool for scientific studies. This paperdescribes some performance of a new position-sensitive detector using double layer LSO array and a newly developed compact PS-PMT (Hamamatsu R7600-C12). The results suggest that this detector is a useful device for a small animal PET. Finally, the initial design of a micro PET scanner employing the new detector is introduced.

Abstract:In this study, we design a stationary multi-pinhole SPECT collimator inserted to a small animal PET scanner and investigate the feasibility of SPECT imaging in this system with Monte Carlo simulation studies. Compared to preceding approaches, the unique aspect of the proposed design is that it enables SPECT imaging only by axial translation of the imaging object to obtain sufficient angular sampling, rather than rotation of either the object or the collimator. This reduces the difficulty of geometrical calibration and facilitates accurate system matrix derivation. In order to minimize the axial overlap, the transverse section of the pinhole is designed to be elliptical. The sampling completeness of different scanning orbits is studied by a numerical approach based on Tuy sampling criteria. Results show that in the reconstruction images of a simulated Derenzo phantom, 1.35 mm hot rods are distinguishable. Image quality with only object translation is comparable to those with both object translation and rotation. A practical calibration method of the system geometrical parameters is developed and tested with simulation data. Finally, we incorporate the TV prior in OS-EM algorithm and the reconstruction results show the noise is efficiently suppressed. We conclude that we present a practical way to implement SPECT imaging on existing PET scanner without object or collimator rotation and desired spatial resolution is achievable with this design.
Development of a SiPM-based PET imaging system for small animals

Abstract:Advances in small animal positron emission tomography (PET) imaging have been accelerated by many new technologies such as the successful incorporation of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). In this paper, we have developed a compact, lightweight PET imaging system that is based on SiPM detectors for small animals imaging, which could be integrated into a multi-modality imaging system. This PET imaging system consists of a stationary detector gantry, a motor-controlled animal bed module, electronics modules, and power supply modules. The PET detector, which was designed as a multi-slice circular ring geometry of 27 discrete block detectors, is composed of a cerium doped lutetium–yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillation crystal and SiPM arrays. The system has a 60mm transaxial field of view (FOV) and a 26mm axial FOV. Performance tests (e.g. spatial resolution, energy resolution, and sensitivity) and phantom and animal imaging studies were performed to evaluate the imaging performance of the PET imaging system. The performance tests and animal imaging results demonstrate the feasibility of an animal PET system based on SiPM detectors and indicate that SiPM detectors can be promising photodetectors in animal PET instrumentation development.

Abstract:Abstract With the goal of developing a total-body small-animal PET system with a high spatial resolution of ∼0.5 mm and a high sensitivity >10% for mouse/rat studies, we simulated four scanners using the graphical processing unit-based Monte Carlo simulation package (gPET) and compared their performance in terms of spatial resolution and sensitivity. We also investigated the effect of depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution on the spatial resolution. All the scanners are built upon 128 DOI encoding dual-ended readout detectors with lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) arrays arranged in 8 detector rings. The solid angle coverages of the four scanners are all ∼0.85 steradians. Each LYSO element has a cross-section of 0.44 × 0.44 mm 2 and the pitch size of the LYSO arrays are all 0.5 mm. The four scanners can be divided into two groups: (1) H 2 RS110-C10 and H 2 RS110-C20 with 40 × 40 LYSO arrays, a ring diameter of 110 mm and axial length of 167 mm, and (2) H 2 RS160-C10 and H 2 RS160-C20 with 60 × 60 LYSO arrays, a diameter of 160 mm and axial length of 254 mm. C10 and C20 denote the crystal thickness of 10 and 20 mm, respectively. The simulation results show that all scanners have a spatial resolution better than 0.5 mm at the center of the field-of-view (FOV). The radial resolution strongly depends on the DOI resolution and radial offset, but not the axial resolution and tangential resolution. Comparing the C10 and C20 designs, the former provides better resolution, especially at positions away from the center of the FOV, whereas the latter has 2× higher sensitivity (∼10% versus ∼20%). This simulation study provides evidence that the 110 mm systems are a good choice for total-body mouse studies at a lower cost, whereas the 160 mm systems are suited for both total-body mouse and rat studies.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a prototype animal PET by applying several novel technologies to use solid-state photomultiplier (SSPM) arrays to measure the depth of interaction (DOI) and improve imaging performance. Each PET detector has an 8 × 8 array of about 1.9 × 1.9 × 30.0 mm(3) lutetium-yttrium-oxyorthosilicate scintillators, with each end optically connected to an SSPM array (16 channels in a 4 × 4 matrix) through a light guide to enable continuous DOI measurement. Each SSPM has an active area of about 3 × 3 mm(2), and its output is read by a custom-developed application-specific integrated circuit to directly convert analogue signals to digital timing pulses that encode the interaction information. These pulses are transferred to and are decoded by a field-programmable gate array-based time-to-digital convertor for coincident event selection and data acquisition. The independent readout of each SSPM and the parallel signal process can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio and enable the use of flexible algorithms for different data processes. The prototype PET consists of two rotating detector panels on a portable gantry with four detectors in each panel to provide 16 mm axial and variable transaxial field-of-view (FOV) sizes. List-mode ordered subset expectation maximization image reconstruction was implemented. The measured mean energy, coincidence timing and DOI resolution for a crystal were about 17.6%, 2.8 ns and 5.6 mm, respectively. The measured transaxial resolutions at the center of the FOV were 2.0 mm and 2.3 mm for images reconstructed with and without DOI, respectively. In addition, the resolutions across the FOV with DOI were substantially better than those without DOI. The quality of PET images of both a hot-rod phantom and mouse acquired with DOI was much higher than that of images obtained without DOI. This study demonstrates that SSPM arrays and advanced readout/processing electronics can be used to develop a practical DOI-measureable PET scanner.
Design of an Inexpensive High-Sensitivity Rodent-Research PET Camera (RRPET)

Abstract:A small animal PET is being developed. The design goals are lower cost, higher sensitivity and same image resolution as commercial animal PET. It uses a new version of our PMT-quadrant-sharing (PQS) detector with a 98% crystal-packing fraction to maximize sensitivity and no light-guides to maximize light output (decoding resolution). It uses 168 low-cost 19-mm PMT and 9216 BGO for its high photoelectric fraction. Each block is 8x8 with an average pitch of 2x2 mm (10 mm deep) to provide image resolution similar to commercial systems using LSO, position-sensitive PMT and optical fibers. The number-of-crystals-per-PMT decoding ratio achieved was 55, similar to an animal PET using GSO that has 3 times more light output than BGO. To maximize image resolution, we "circularize" the PQS detector design, where each block is one side of a 24-sided polygon (the detector ring). Circularizing PQS detector requires the block to be ground slightly into a pentagon (166degrees apex). The edge rows of crystals in the block are also tapered, so that blocks can be glued together to form a solid BGO ring with nearly 100% packing. The ring diameter is 13 cm. 6 rings provide a 12-cm axial FOV. The large axial FOV increases coincidence sensitivity. An automatic PMT-equalization system can tune the PET in 1 minute without radiation, for PMT tuning before each study to minimize the effects of prior radiation loading and temperature drift. Detector-pileup-recovery electronics were used to prevent imaging artifacts and count-loss in BGO detectors. Experiments showed that 2x2x10 mm BGO can be decoded (energy resolution 23%). Monte Carlo simulation showed a detection efficiency of 5.9% (350-700 KeV) for a central point source. The 3.7x increase in coincidence sensitivity comes from (a) larger axial-FOV (1.8x), (b) BGO higher photoelectric fraction (1.5x) and (c) high packing fraction (1.3x).

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a small animal PET scanner named SIAT aPET was developed using dual-ended readout depth encoding detectors to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The scanner consists of four detector rings with 12 detector modules per ring; the ring diameter is 111 mm and the axial field of view (FOV) is 105.6 mm. The images are reconstructed using an ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm. The spatial resolution of the scanner was measured by using a 22 Na point source at the center axial FOV with different radial offsets. The sensitivity of the scanner was measured at center axis of the scanner with different axial positions. The count rate performance of the system was evaluated by scanning mouse-sized and rat-sized phantoms. An ultra-micro hot-rods phantom and two mice injected with 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG were scanned on the scanner. An average depth of interaction (DOI) resolution of 1.96 mm, energy resolution of 19.1% and timing resolution of 1.20 ns were obtained for the detector. Average spatial resolutions of 0.82 mm and 1.16 mm were obtained up to a distance of 30 mm radially from the center of the FOV when reconstructing a point source in 1% and 10% warm backgrounds, respectively, using OSEM reconstruction with 16 subsets and 10 iterations. Sensitivities of 16.0% and 11.9% were achieved at center of the scanner for energy windows of 250–750 keV and 350–750 keV respectively. Peak noise equivalent count rates (NECRs) of 324 kcps and 144 kcps were obtained at an activity of 26.4 MBq for the mouse-sized and rat-sized phantoms. Rods of 1.0 mm diameter can be visually resolved from the image of the ultra-micro hot-rods phantom. The capability of the scanner was demonstrated by high quality in-vivo mouse images.

Optimization of a depth of interaction encoding PET block detector for a PET/MRI insert

Abstract:Preclinical positron emission tomography, combined with magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI), is increasingly used as a tool to simultaneously characterize functional processes in vivo. Many emerging preclinical applications, however, are limited by PET detection sensitivity, especially when generating short imaging frames for quantitative studies. One such application is dynamic multifunctional imaging, which probes multiple aspects of a biological process, using relationships between the datasets to quantify interactions. These studies have limited accuracy due to the relatively low sensitivity of modern preclinical PET/MRI systems. The goal of this project is to develop a preclinical PET/MRI insert with detection sensitivity above 15% (250-750 keV) to improve quantitation in dynamic PET imaging. To achieve this sensitivity, we have developed a detector module incorporating a 2 cm thick crystal block, which will be arranged into a system with 8 cm axial FOV, targeting mice and rats. To maintain homogenous spatial resolution, the detector will incorporate dual-ended depth-of-interaction (DOI) encoding with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) based photodetector arrays. The specific aim of this work is to identify a detector configuration with adequate performance for the proposed system. We have optimized the SiPM array geometry and tested two crystal array materials with pitch ranging from 0.8 to 1.2 mm and various surface treatments and reflectors. From these configurations, we have identified the best balance between crystal separation, energy resolution, and DOI resolution. The final detector module uses two rectangular SiPM arrays with 5 × 6 and 5 × 4 elements. The photodetector arrays are coupled to a 19 × 19 array of 1 mm pitch LYSO crystals with polished surfaces and a diffuse reflector. The prototype design has 14.3% ± 2.9% energy resolution, 3.57 ± 0.88 mm DOI resolution, and resolves all elements in the crystal array, giving it sufficient performance to serve as the basis for the proposed high sensitivity PET/MRI insert.
A High Count-Rate and Depth-of-Interaction Resolving Single Layered One-Side Readout Pixelated Scintillator Crystal Array for PET Applications

Abstract:Organ-specific, targeted Field-of-View (FoV) Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) inserts are viable solutions for a number of imaging tasks where whole-body PET/MRI systems lack the necessary sensitivity and resolution. To meet the required PET detector performance of these systems, high count-rates and effective spatial resolutions on the order of a few mm, a novel two-axis patterned reflector foil pixelated scintillator crystal array design is developed and its proof-of-concept illustrated in-silico with the Monte Carlo radiation transport modelling toolkit Geant4. It is shown that the crystal surface roughness and phased open reflector cross-section patterns could be optimised to maximise either the PET radiation detector's effective spatial resolution, or count rate before event pile up. In addition, it was illustrated that these two parameters had minimal impact on the energy and time resolution of the proposed PET radiation detector design. Finally, it is shown that a PET radiation detector with balance performance could be constructed using ground crystals and phased open reflector cross-section pattern corresponding to the middle of the tested range.

High-resolution PET detector design: modelling components of intrinsic spatial resolution

Abstract:The development of dedicated small animal PET (positron emission tomography) scanners has led to significantly higher spatial resolution and comparable sensitivity to clinical scanners. However, it is not clear whether we are approaching the fundamental limit of spatial resolution. This work aims to understand what is currently limiting spatial resolution during data formation and collection and how to apply that knowledge to obtain the best possible resolution for small animal PET without sacrificing sensitivity. Monte Carlo simulations were performed of the interactions of a 511 keV photon in a variety of detector materials to evaluate the modulation transfer function of the materials. Positron range, non-colinearity and pixel size were modelled to determine the contribution of additional components of data formation and collection on the complete modulation transfer function of a PET system. These simulations are shown to predict the intrinsic detector resolution of current high resolution systems very well. They also show that current detectors are not limited by inter-crystal scatter. An intrinsic resolution of 0.5 mm can be achieved, but would require a detector with a pixel size of around 250 microm that can be read out unambiguously. It is shown that a range of different detector materials, both scintillators and semiconductors, can be used in these high-resolution detectors. While this design relies on thin (approximately 3 mm) pieces of material, stacks of the material are shown to simultaneously provide spatial resolution near 0.5 mm and 60% efficiency. This work has shown that detectors with significantly better resolution and sensitivity can be developed for small animal PET applications.

Investigation of a Compact DOI-PET System for Small Animal Imaging

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally investigate the resolution performance characteristics of a compact small-animal DOI-PET system. Conceptual design of this system employs sixteen 8x8 LSO/LYSO dual-layer DOI block detectors, with individual 2.1x2.1x10 mm(3) crystals. These detectors are arranged to form a 5 cm-radius detector ring to yield an intended 4.8 cm-radius field-of-view (FOV). As expected, our measurements reveal significant resolution degradation outside the center of the FOV due to a significant level of parallax errors arising from the proposed compact geometry. This resolution degradation, however, can be substantially reduced by use of an analytical sinogram restoration technique to yield uniform spatial resolution inside the FOV. This technique is computationally efficient; it can he incorporated as an integral part of a PET imager to achieve high-performance in a cost-effective manner.
Validation of the design of a high-sensitivity and high-resolution PET system for a preclinical PET/EPR hybrid scanner

Abstract:We report the development of a high-sensitivity and high-resolution PET subsystem for a next-generation preclinical PET/EPR hybrid scanner for investigating and improving hypoxia imaging with PET. The PET subsystem consists of 14 detector modules (DM) installed within a cylindrical supporting frame whose outer and inner diameters are 115 mm and 60 mm, respectively. Each DM contains eight detector units (DU) in a row and each DU is made of a 12 × 12 array of 1 × 1 × 10 mm 3 LYSO crystals (with a 1.05 mm pitch) coupled to a 4 × 4 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array that has a 3.2 mm pitch (Hamamatsu multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) array 14161-3050HS-04). The PET subsystem has a 104 mm axial field-of-view (AFOV) that is sufficient for full-body mouse imaging, therefore enabling temporal and spatial correlation studies of tumor hypoxia between PET and EPR. It employs 1 mm-width crystals to support sub-millimeter image resolution that is desired for mouse imaging. Although a DM contains 1,152 LYSO crystals, by use of a newly devised signal readout method only six outputs are produced. Recently a partial prototype of this subsystem consisting of four DMs is built. In this paper, we present performance measurement results obtained for the developed DMs and initial imaging results obtained by the prototype. The developed DMs show uniformly superior performance in identifying the hit crystal and detector unit, in energy resolution, and in coincidence time resolution. The images obtained for a 22 Na point source and a 18 F-filled U-shaped tube source show an image resolution of about 1.1 mm and 1.2 mm FWHM in the transverse and axial directions respectively, and demonstrate successful imaging over the entire 104 mm AFOV of the prototype. This estimated image resolution however includes the contribution by the source size.

Abstract:Position Emission Tomography (PET) is an advanced clinical diagnostic imaging technique for nuclear medicine. Small animal PET is increasingly used for studying the animal model of disease, new drugs and new therapies. A prototype of Singles Processing Unit (SPU) for a small animal PET system was designed to obtain the time, energy, and position information. The energy and position is actually calculated through high precison charge measurement, which is based on amplification, shaping, A/D conversion and area calculation in digital signal processing domian. Analysis and simulations were also conducted to optimize the key parameters in system design. Initial tests indicate that the charge and time precision is better than 3‰ FWHM and 350 ps FWHM respectively, while the position resolution is better than 3.5‰ FWHM. A Finely Segmented Semi-Monolithic Detector tailored for High Resolution PET

Abstract:Preclinical research and organ-dedicated applications require high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) detectors to visualize small structures and understand biological processes at a finer level of detail. Current commercial systems often employ finely pixelated or monolithic scintillators, each with its limitations. We present a semi-monolithic detector, tailored for high-resolution PET applications, and merging concepts of monolithic and pixelated crystals. The detector features slabs measuring (24 x 10 x 1) sq. mm, coupled to a 12 x 12 readout channel photosensor with 4 mm pitch. The slabs are grouped in two arrays of 44 slabs each to achieve a higher optical photon density. We employ a fan beam collimator for fast calibration to train machine-learning-based positioning models for all three dimensions, including slab identification and depth-of-interaction (DOI), utilizing gradient tree boosting (GTB). Energy calculation was based on a position-dependent energy calibration. Using an analytical timing calibration, time skews were corrected for coincidence timing resolution (CTR) estimation. Leveraging machine-learning-based calibration in all three dimensions, we achieved high detector spatial resolution: down to 1.18 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) detector spatial resolution and 0.75 mm mean absolute error (MAE) in the planar-monolithic direction along the slabs, and 2.14 mm FWHM and 1.03 mm MAE for depth-of-interaction (DOI) at an energy window of (435-585) keV. Correct slab interaction identification exceeded 80%, alongside an energy resolution of 13.8% and a CTR of 450 ps FWHM. Therewith, the introduced finely segmented, high-resolution slab detector demonstrates an appealing performance suitable for high-resolution PET applications. The current benchtop-based detector calibration routine allows these detectors to be used in PET systems.

Dual-ended Readout Small Animal PET Detector by Using 0.5 Mm Pixelated LYSO Crystal Arrays and SiPMs

Abstract:Small animal PET scanners need to have a high spatial resolution since the size of the organs of small animals is much smaller than that of humans, and also need to have a high sensitivity since the allowed injection dose is limited by the radiation dosimetry of the small organs. To simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity for a small animal PET scanner, detectors with high position resolution, high efficiency and high depth of interaction (DOI) resolution are required. In this work, three 17 x 17 pixelated LYSO arrays with crystal size of similar to 0.5 mm and an outer dimension of 10 x 10 x 20 mm(3) are fabricated. The first LYSO array uses 80 mu m thick BaSO4 reflector. The second and the third LYSO arrays use 65 mu m thick Toray reflectors. The outermost side of the third LYSO array is also wrapped with k9 glass of the same size as the crystals in the array in order to improve the light collection and flood histogram quality for the edge crystals. The LYSO arrays are read out with two Hamamatsu SiPM arrays from both ends. The SiPM array is 4 x 4, with 3 x 3 mm(2) pixel size and 0.2 mm gap in between the SiPM pixels. The SiPM array is read out with a resistor network circuit to reduce the number of signals from 16 to 4. The performance of the detector in terms of flood histograms, energy resolution, DOI resolution and timing resolution was measured. All three detectors provide good flood histograms and all crystals in an array can be clearly resolved. The average DOI resolutions of individual crystals are 1.84, 1.98 and 1.93 mm for the three detectors for events with energy E > 350 keV. The BaSO4 array has higher light output and provides a better average crystal energy resolution of 21.0 %. The photopeak amplitude of the Toray arrays changes with depth, which results in worse energy resolutions of 24.4 % and 23.8 % for the two detectors respectively. The average timing resolutions of individual crystals are 1.23, 1.27 and 1.24 ns for the three detectors for events with E > 350 keV. All three detector modules achieved high position resolution (0.5 mm crystal size), high efficiency (20 mm crystal length) and high DOI resolution (<2.0 mm) and can be used to build a high sensitivity small animal PET scanner with spatial resolution approaching the physical limit.
Performance Evaluation of A Compact Pet/Spect/Ct Tri-Modality System for Small Animal Imaging Applications

Abstract:PET, SPECT and CT imaging techniques are widely used in preclinical small animal imaging applications. In this paper, we present a compact small animal PET/SPECT/CT tri-modality system. A dual-functional, shared detector design is implemented which enables PET and SPECT imaging with a same LYSO ring detector. A multi-pinhole collimator is mounted on the system and inserted into the detector ring in SPECT imaging mode. A cone-beam CT consisting of a micro focus X-ray tube and a CMOS detector is implemented. The detailed design and the performance evaluations are reported in this paper. In PET imaging mode, the measured NEMA based spatial resolution is 2.12mm (FWHM), and the sensitivity at the central field of view (CFOV) is 3.2%. The FOV size is 50mm (∅)×100mm (L). The SPECT has a spatial resolution of 1.32mm (FWHM) and an average sensitivity of 0.031% at the center axial, and a 30mm (∅)×90mm (L) FOV. The CT spatial resolution is 8.32lp/mm @10%MTF, and the contrast discrimination function value is 2.06% with 1.5mm size cubic box object. In conclusion, a compact, tri-modality PET/SPECT/CT system was successfully built with low cost and high performance.

Abstract:Background Long‐axis positron emission tomography (PET) has emerged as one of the recent research directions in PET due to its ability to significantly enhance sensitivity and counting performance for low‐dose imaging, rapid imaging, and whole‐body dynamic imaging. Purpose The PET system presented in this study is a long‐axis animal PET based on lutetium–yttrium orthosilicate and silicon photomultiplier, designed for whole‐body imaging in rats. It features a diameter of 143 mm and an axial length of 213.3 mm. This study evaluated the performance of this PET system in accordance with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 4‐2008 standards. Methods The performance evaluation was conducted according to the NEMA NU 4‐2008 standards in terms of spatial resolution, sensitivity, counting rate performance, scatter fraction (SF) and image quality. In addition, a rat imaging study was conducted to assess the imaging capability of this PET system. Results The average energy resolution of the PET system was 12.87%, the average coincidence timing resolution was 751 ps. The FWHM of spatial resolution reconstructed by filtered back projection and 3D‐OSEM‐PSF algorithm at 5 mm radial offset from the axial center were 1.65 and 0.88 mm. The peak absolute sensitivity measured by a point source at the center of the field of view was evaluated as 6.71% (361–661 keV) and 10.31% (250–750 keV). For the mouse‐like phantom, the SF was 11.0% and the peak noise equivalent counting rate (NECR) was 1193 kcps at 94.2 MBq (2.54 mCi). For the rat‐like phantom, the SF was 26.8% and the NECR was 682.5 kcps at 78.6 MBq (2.12 mCi). Conclusions The performance measurement results demonstrate that this PET system exhibits high sensitivity and count rate performance, making it potential for high‐quality whole‐body dynamic imaging of rats.

Abstract:Hyperion-II(D) is a positron emission tomography (PET) insert which allows simultaneous operation in a clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. To read out the scintillation light of the employed lutetium yttrium orthosilicate crystal arrays with a pitch of 1 mm and 12 mm in height, digital silicon photomultipliers (DPC 3200-22, Philips Digital Photon Counting) (DPC) are used. The basic PET performance in terms of energy resolution, coincidence resolution time (CRT) and sensitivity as a function of the operating parameters, such as the operating temperature, the applied overvoltage, activity and configuration parameters of the DPCs, has been evaluated at system level. The measured energy resolution did not show a large dependency on the selected parameters and is in the range of 12.4%-12.9% for low activity, degrading to ∼13.6% at an activity of ∼100 MBq. The CRT strongly depends on the selected trigger scheme (trig) of the DPCs, and we measured approximately 260 ps, 440 ps, 550 ps and 1300 ps for trig 1-4, respectively. The trues sensitivity for a NEMA NU 4 mouse-sized scatter phantom with a 70 mm long tube of activity was dependent on the operating parameters and was determined to be 0.4%-1.4% at low activity. The random fraction stayed below 5% at activity up to 100 MBq and the scatter fraction was evaluated as ∼6% for an energy window of 411 keV-561 keV and ∼16% for 250 keV-625 keV. Furthermore, we performed imaging experiments using a mouse-sized hot-rod phantom and a large rabbit-sized phantom. In 2D slices of the reconstructed mouse-sized hot-rod phantom (∅ = 28 mm), the rods were distinguishable from each other down to a rod size of 0.8 mm. There was no benefit from the better CRT of trig 1 over trig 3, where in the larger rabbit-sized phantom (∅ = 114 mm) we were able to show a clear improvement in image quality using the time-of-flight information. The findings will allow system architects-aiming at a similar detector design using DPCs-to make predictions about the design requirements and the performance that can be expected.
