Abstract:Catalysts can play a critical role in the development of sodium–air batteries (SABs). Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology enables rational design and atomic utilization of catalyst by homogenously distributing catalytically active material on a variety of substrates. Here, a novel hierarchical nanostructured Co3O4 is decorated on carbon nanotubes by ALD (CNT@Co3O4) and used as a catalyst for SABs. CNT@Co3O4 demonstrates better performance and longer cycle life than a mechanically mixed CNT/Co3O4 nanocomposite. Well‐dispersed ALD Co3O4 catalyst on CNTs, which serves as functionalized active sites, enables rapid electron exchange and high oxygen reduction/evolution activities. Synchrotron‐based X‐ray analysis including X‐ray absorption near edge structure, extended X‐ray absorption fine structure, and scanning transmission X‐ray microscopy characterization techniques have been employed to elucidate the activity of Co3O4 and to investigate the nanoscale discharge product distribution found in SABs. This analysis reveals that Co3O4 catalyst can promote the electrochemical decomposition of sodium peroxide, superoxide, and carbonates. The role of the catalyst in SABs is clarified and discussed in detail.
Mn-modified nitrogen-doped Pt-based electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction in aluminum-air batteries

Abstract:In this study, a Mn-modified Pt-based catalyst loaded on nitrogen-doped Ketjen black (Mn-Pt/NKB) is prepared using a simple ethylene glycol reduction method. The size of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) is effectively controlled by doping with Mn and N. With the smallest average particle size of 1.7 nm, Mn-Pt/NKB demonstrates half-wave potentials of 0.890 and 0.688 V in the alkaline and neutral electrolytes, respectively, which are superior to those of commercial platinum on activated carbon (Pt/C). When applied as an air cathode in aluminum-air battery, it exhibits ultra-high power densities of 190 (alkaline) and 26.2 mW·cm −2 (neutral). Moreover, the voltage remains stable after 5 h of discharge. The practical application performance of the Mn-Pt/NKB catalyst in an aluminum-air battery is better than that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism on surfaces with different particle sizes is analyzed using density functional theory. Oxygen cracking is the major pathway on the surface of the small particles with lower energy consumption of 0.5 eV, while water molecule cleavage is the major pathway on the surface of the large particles with higher energy consumption of 0.97 eV. The lower energy consumption of the oxygen cracking pathway further confirms the ORR mechanism for higher activity on small-sized surfaces. This study provides a direction for the rational design of Pt-based catalysts for ORR and sheds light on the commercial development of aluminum-air batteries.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for metal-air batteries and fuel cells, and it is urgent to develop non-precious metal catalysts with low cost and high performance for ORR. Here we propose a new general strategy for preparing hieratical porous manganese- and nitrogen-codoped carbon (Mn–N–C) derived from low cost biomass. This strategy demonstrates that pre-oxidation of the biomass with an optimized temperature plays an essential role in forming the unique structure of Mn–N–C due to the modification of surface functional groups on biomass. The resultant Mn–N–C displays superior ORR performance in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes, which is comparable or even higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The superior electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the intrinsically efficient Mn-Nx active sites and the high surface area together with the hieratical pores exposing more active sites, which is also confirmed by the density functional theory calculation. Furthermore, the Al-air battery based on the Mn–N–C cathode shows a high working voltage and maximum power density, demonstrating promising potential for practical application. This approach provides a new insight for low-cost and high performance electrocatalysts for metal-air batteries.

Abstract:γ-MnO2 nanorod-assembled hierarchical micro-spheres with abundant oxygen defects are synthesized by a simple thermal treatment approach as oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for Al (aluminum) - air batteries. The rich oxygen vacancies on the surface of γ-MnO2 are verified by morphology, structure, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic activity of γ-MnO2 is significantly improved by the incoming oxygen vacancies. The γ-MnO2 nanorod-assembled hierarchical micro-spheres calcined under 300 °C in Ar atmosphere show the best ORR performance. The primary Al-air batteries using γ-MnO2 catalysts as the cathode, which demonstrates excellent peal power density of 318 mW cm−2 when applying the γ-MnO2 catalysts with optimal amount of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with sluggish kinetics on the cathode of aluminum–air (Al–air) batteries greatly limits their further development. Here, a new strategy is proposed to synthesize oxygen and nitrogen codoped carbon nanofibers loaded with manganese oxides (MnO/Mn2O3/ONCNF-n) as an efficient electrocatalyst for ORR by using oxygen plasma surface etching. The MnO/Mn2O3/ONCNF-3 exhibit superior ORR performance in an alkaline electrolyte, which is attributed to various active sites including N and O heteroatoms, vacancies, and manganese oxides. Additionally, the fabricated homemade Al–air battery (AAB) with MnO/Mn2O3/ONCNF-3 exhibits a maximum power density of 129.7 mW cm–2, demonstrating comparable performance to AABs based on the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Al batteries exhibit high crustal abundance and theoretical energy density, making them promising candidates as next-generation batteries. However, the poor Al plating/stripping at the Al anode severely limits their potential application. Herein, MXene-induced atomically dispersed MN4 sites (M = Co, Ni, Cu) containing axial O coordination (MN4O2) are demonstrated to show a synergistic effect of dynamic Al-O interactions to induce Al homogeneous deposition. As an example, the single-atomic Co modified Al anode exhibits negligible nucleation overpotential and a long plating lifespan even under unprecedented conditions (areal capacity of 10 mAh cm(-2), current density of 40 mA cm(-2)). A practical 323 Wh kg(-1) metal Al-S battery is well demonstrated under a 7 mg cm(-2) high sulfur loading. These findings provide atomic-scale insights for the regulation of Al deposition and provide an avenue to stabilize the metal Al battery under practical high energy density conditions.

Abstract:The hybrid battery integrating a typical Zn redox battery and a Zn-air battery is a promising green technology for energy storage, and the cathode integrating the redox reaction and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction is a key point for efficient electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a scalable strategy to fabricate nanoporous Ag2Al intermetallic compound as a self-standing cathode for the hybrid Zn battery. The abundant surface oxygen species, the Ag-Al intermetallic interaction and the np-Ag2x interface cooperatively contributed to the catalytic ORR activity. The electrode endows efficient catalytic oxygen reduction (a Tafel slope of 38.0 mV/dec and an onset potential of 0.998 V) and regulated redox activity as compared with Ag. The nanoporous channels allow efficient ion transport, interface charge exchange and gas molecular diffusion. Significantly, the assembled hybrid Zn-Ag2Al/air battery delivers a high capacity of 3.23 mAh/cm2 as compared with recent reports. As far as we know, this is the first exploration for the electrochemical property of Ag2Al, and it would inspire more exploration in developing multifunctional materials and robust hybrid batteries for practical applications.

Abstract:Aluminum‐air battery has the advantages of high energy density, low cost and environmental protection, and is considered as an ideal next‐generation energy storage conversion system. However, the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in air cathode leads to its unsatisfactory performance. Here, we report an electrode made of N and Ni co‐doped MnO2 nanotubes. In alkaline solution, Ni/N‐MnO2 has higher oxygen reduction activity than undoped MnO2, with an initial potential of 1.00 V and a half‐wave potential of 0.75 V. This is because it has abundant defects, high specific surface area and sufficient Mn3+ active sites, which promote the transfer of electrons and oxygen‐containing intermediates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that MnO2 doped with N and Ni atoms reduces the reaction overpotential and improves the ORR kinetics. The peak power density and energy density of the Ni/N‐MnO2 air electrode increased by 34.03 mW·cm‐2 and 316.41 mWh·g‐1, respectively. The results show that N and Ni co‐doped MnO2 nanotubes are a promising air electrode, which can provide some ideas for the research of aluminum‐air batteries.

Abstract:Iron coordinated with nitrogen (FeN x ) sites hosted in the micropores of carbon substrate offer excellent performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Achieving a highly exposed and dispersed FeN x sites accessible for ORR is still challenging to date. In this work, two-dimensional hexagonal carbon nanosheets supported FeN x moieties (FeNC-NaCl- T ) were synthesized via a molten NaCl-assisted pyrolysis strategy. Benefit from the high specific surface area (1371.635 m 3 ·g -1 ) and highly dispersed FeN x sites, the optimized FeNC-NaCl-900 exhibits superior ORR activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.90 V in alkaline electrolyte. Impressively, with FeNC-NaCl-900 as the cathode catalyst in aqueous zinc–air battery, achieving a remarkable performance with a high peak power density of 177 mW·cm -2 and competitive durability (200 h). Furthermore, the Al-air battery equipped with FeNC-NaCl-900 attained an ultrahigh specific capacity of 2257.48 mAh·g -1 at a large discharge current of 100 mA cm −2 . These findings provide guidance for the development of high performance FeNC catalysts and their applications in metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Metal-air batteries have attracted extensive research interests due to their high theoretical energy density. However, most of the previous studies were limited by applying pure oxygen in the cathode, sacrificing the gravimetric and volumetric energy density. Here, we develop a real sodium-"air" battery, in which the rechargeability of the battery relies on the reversible reaction of the formation of sodium peroxide dihydrate (Na2O2·2H2O). After an oxygen evolution reaction catalyst is applied, the charge overpotential is largely reduced to achieve a high energy efficiency. The sodium-air batteries deliver high areal capacity of 4.2 mAh·cm-2 and have a decent cycle life of 100 cycles. The oxygen crossover effect is largely suppressed by replacing the oxygen with air, whereas the dense solid electrolyte interphase formed on the sodium anode further prolongs the cycle life.

Abstract:Increasing both catalytic site accessibility and intrinsic activity of multishelled materials is critical to boost its efficiency for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis and initiate its application in metal-air batteries. Herein, a hierarchical porous double-shelled (Mg,Co)(3)O-4 electrocatalyst with controllable Mg substitution is synthesized via a proposed in situ coordinating process. The hierarchical porosity optimizes the availability of active sites and broadens diffusion channels for oxygen species. Meanwhile, Mg substitution greatly increases electrical conductivity and realizes novel insight of tailoring lattice alkalinity. Specifically, Mg substitution positively influences oxygen electrocatalysis by inducing lattice buffer zones that promote hydroxyl detachment from nearby catalytic sites. As a result, the final hybrid of (Mg,Co)(3)O-4 encapsulated in N-doped graphitized carbon affords superior bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activities, outperforming state-of-the-art noble-metal benchmarks. When serving as an air electrode in Zn-air batteries, a low charge-discharge gap and long-term cyclability for over 200 h are realized in ambient air.

Abstract:Constructing heterogeneous interfaces between transition metal alloys and oxides in a carbon-based composite catalyst is an effective strategy for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction (OER and ORR). Inspired by this concept, a carbon-coated MnCoNi alloy/oxide catalyst (Ox-MnCoNi-C) was synthesized by carbonization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and controllable reoxidation process. Owing to the synergetic interaction between abundant active sites on the heterogeneous interface and the good electron transfer rate of graphitic carbon, Ox-MnCoNi-C exhibits a low potential gap (ΔE) of 0.79 V. Meanwhile, the assembled liquid zinc–air batteries exhibit high power density (125 mW cm–2), superior primary discharge specific capacity (822 mAh gZn –1), and no less than 100 h of steady charging and discharging operation running at 5 mA cm–2. This approach will provide a generic template for the preparation and extension of MOF-derived carbon composite catalysts applied in oxygen electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Exploring inexpensive and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report a new 3D hierarchical sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanocages (hSNCNC) as a promising bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst by an in-situ MgO template method with pyridine and thiophene as the mixed precursor. The as-prepared hSNCNC exhibits a positive half-wave potential of 0.792 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) for ORR, and a low operating potential of 1.640 V at a 10 mA cm(-2) current density for OER. The reversible oxygen electrode index is 0.847 V, far superior to commercial Pt/C and IrO2, which reaches the top level of the reported bifunctional catalysts. Consequently, the hSNCNC as air cathodes in an assembled Zn-air battery features low charge/discharge overpotential and long lifetime. The remarkable properties arises from the introduced multiple heteroatom dopants and stable 3D hierarchical structure with multi-scale pores, which provides the abundant uniform high-active S and N species and efficient charge transfer as well as mass transportation. These results demonstrate the potential strategy in developing suitable carbon-based bi-/multi-functional catalysts to enable the next generation of the rechargeable metal-air batteries. Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) pose significant challenges for the viability of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Developing efficient, cost-effective, stable, and dual-purpose oxygen electrocatalysts remains a formidable hurdle. In this study, we successfully synthesized a highly promising chainmail catalyst named FeNi@NC, comprising ultrathin carbon shells encapsulating FeNi alloy nanoparticles on N-doped graphene-like nanosheets. The strong synergistic effects between FeNi alloys and N-doped carbon shells result in outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity, particularly in alkaline media. Consequently, Zn-air batteries incorporating FeNi@NC as the catalyst demonstrate exceptional performance, operating reliably at high power density with extended lifespan. Furthermore, computational analyses provided further confirmation of the catalytic activity and revealed that the electron transfer from FeNi alloy nanoparticles to the carbon shells activates the carbon surface, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. This research not only sheds light on the rational design and synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon materials supporting the growth-constrained transition metal alloys but also offers a practical solution for advancing the application of Zn-air batteries. Abstract:The great attention of rechargeable Zn-air battery has motivated extensive research on the development of inexpensive, highly efficient, and robust noble-metal-free bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, Mn-N-C-950 single-atom catalyst with biomass aerogel as precursor was successfully synthesized. The resulting Mn-N-C-950 exhibited excellent bifunctional catalytic performance for ORR ( E 1/2 = 0.843 V) and OER ( E j=10 = 1.56 V) in alkaline electrolytes, which can compete with previously reported bifunctional electrocatalysts. In addition, compared to the Pt/C + RuO 2 mixed catalyst, this bifunctional catalyst can endow the self-made zinc-air battery with better power density (114.1 mW/cm 2 ) and cycle stability (105.5 h), demonstrating its potential feasibility in practical applications of rechargeable metal air batteries.

Abstract:Aluminum-air (Al-air) battery has been regarded as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. Manganese oxides (MnOx) are widely studied as non-noble metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with low cost and high stability. However, they still possess inferior ORR activity for commercial applications. In this study, an architecture of CeO2 nanoparticles decorated MnOOH nanorods (2) is prepared by a simple one-step solvothermal method as an ORR catalyst. Interestingly, the incorporation of CeO2 can significantly strengthen the ORR activities of MnOOH. The half-wave potential of 2 reaches 0.80 V vs. RHE, which shows a 30 mV positive shift compared with MnOOH. It has been verified that the significant improvement ORR activity of 2 is attributed to their synergistic effect of MnOOH and CeO2, resulting in much better oxygen activation, oxygen enrichment, and H2O2 inhibition. In a practical double-face flow Al-air battery system, 2 catalyst even exhibits better electrocatalytic performance (the discharge voltage of 0.65 V at 400 mA cm−2, the higher energy density of 3595.4 Wh kgAl−1 and power density of 302.8 mW cm−2) than the commercial 20% Pt/C, further highlighting the multi-functions of CeO2 nanoparticles attaches to MnOOH nanorods.

Abstract:Aluminum metal has been regarded as a promising anode material for aqueous metal‐air batteries. However, the stable cycling of Al anodes is challenging due to the severe parasitic corrosion of Al metal in alkaline electrolytes. Here, a novel additive, n‐octylphosphonic acid (OPA), is introduced into the typical NaOH electrolyte system to improve the interfacial stability of Al anodes and thus promote high‐performance Al‐air batteries (AABs). Combining several experimental characterizations and theoretical calculation, it is proved that OPA molecules in an NaOH aqueous environment can modify the Al anode/electrolyte interface and alter the stacking of the discharge product. The electrolyte engineering is capable of anchoring dynamically to restrain side reactions through hydrogen bonds (H···O), homogenizing the dissolution of Al metal and avoiding precipitation agglomeration. As a proof of concept, AABs full cells with an electrolyte containing OPA achieve higher potential plateau and discharge capacity than those with a pure NaOH electrolyte. It paves a way to develop highly‐efficient and eco‐friendly electrolyte additive strategies for high‐performance AABs devices and advance the current understanding of organic additive mechanisms in AABs. n‐octylphosphonic acid (OPA) is proposed as an ideal inhibitor to suppress the self‐corrosion of Al anodes in Al‐air batteries (AABs). AAB full cells with an OPA‐based electrolyte deliver an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 2694 mAh g−1, 91% of their theoretical value (2980 mAh g−1). A practically useful OPA‐based AAB pile is further constructed to power a commercial digital camera steadily.

Abstract:Electrical energy storage has emerged as a critical component in North America's clean energy transformation. Vehicle electrification and integration of renewables such as wind and solar power into the grid have further underlined the importance of affordable, environmentally friendly energy storage platforms. Rechargeable batteries are now considered to be viable options for large-scale energy storage with lithium-ion and redox flow batteries leading the charge. Over the past decades, aluminum-ion batteries have experienced a renaissance on account of their high volumetric energy density, superior cycleability, enhanced stability and significant cost benefits compared with other commercially available secondary batteries. Aluminum-air batteries also hold significant promise as primary energy storage platforms, but they suffer from thermodynamics and kinetics hurdles, leading to inferior performance. To address these issues, researchers have focused on optimizing different cell components, including anodes, cathodes, and electrolytes. It is well established that nano-structuring battery components would markedly improve their short- and long-term performance by enhancing reaction kinetics. One of the major impediments to wide-scale commercialization of Al-ion batteries continues to be its inferior capacity and cycle stability compared with commercially available secondary batteries. Part of these issues can be ascribed to the failure of cathode materials currently being investigated and used. As for primary Al-air batteries, conventional air cathodes do not perform very well either; and there are many reasons as to why the incorporation of such air cathodes into Al-air batteries would lead to inferior performance or premature failure; the most important of which is low catalytic activity. To address a number of these issues, pulsed current electrodeposition was employed to deposit nano-catalysts such nickel, silver, platinum and oxides of manganese on different support materials, including carbon paper and cloth, titania nanotubes, and stainless steel and nickel meshes. The influence of various electrodeposition parameters, including peak current density, duty cycle, type of waveform and pulse frequency, on resulting layers were systematically investigated. In most cases, nanocatalysts about 2-40 nm in diameter were obtained. Various electrochemical tests were utilized to characterize the resulting layers. A simple mathematical model based on progressive nucleation also was developed to predict the influence of the aforementioned electrodeposition parameters on the resulting nano-catalyst layers. The model was further refined by considering all contributing factors towards growth current, including diffusion, ohmic and charge transfer phenomena as well as changing diffusion coefficients, during electrodeposition. According to the model, at high peak deposition current densities and low duty cycles (5% or less), the ramp-down waveform yielded the highest nucleation rates, confirming the experimental findings in which nanoparticles generated with the above waveform produced the smallest average grain size, ranging from 2-10 nanometer in diameter for platinum and silver nanocatalysts on carbon cloths and titania nanotubes, and 10-50 nm in diameter for nickel nanoparticles deposited on stainless steel and nickel meshes and titania nanotubes.
