Abstract:To improve the radiation resistance of Yb-doped fiber lasers, we investigate the influence of pre-radiation and photo-bleaching on the gamma-radiated laser's performance. When the gamma radiation dose is within 10 krad(Si) with a radiation dose rate less than 0.4 rad(Si)/s, compared to the output power of a non-pre-radiated Yb-doped fiber laser, the pre-radiation technique could enhance the radiation resistance against gamma-ray. However, the mode instability threshold was decreased, which was caused by the cumulated radiation-induced attenuation of pre-radiation and radiation. Based on an electronic probe micro-analyzer, the Yb-doped active fiber was Yb-doped aluminophosphosilicate ternary fiber; therefore, the radiated defects were mainly hole-related defects. A laser diode centered at 532 nm was chosen as the photo-bleaching laser source, which could recover 45.2% of the radiated-induced attenuation and increase the mode instability threshold. This work demonstrates the influence of pre-radiation and photo-bleaching on the radiation resistance against the gamma-ray of Yb-doped fiber lasers, which are of significance in the design and fabrication of related fiber lasers.
Gamma Radiation Induced Darkening Effect on Ytterbium Doped Fiber Oscillators

Abstract:Under gamma irradiation, the output power of the fiber laser gradually decreases due to the rise of radiation induced attenuation (RIA) also known as the radiation-induced darkening effect. This phenomenon may lead to a decreased threshold of transverse mode instability, reducing the stability and beam quality of the fiber lasers. Understanding the darkening effect on fiber lasers, particularly high-power oscillators, is necessary. This work comprehensively investigates the irradiation effect on the ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) oscillator operating at around 200 W online and the annealing process afterward. During the irradiation process, we find that the RIA of the rare-earth doped fiber increased linearly with the total radiation dose, due to the generation of color centers. The output power of the 1060 nm oscillator decreased by nearly 12% after 6 krad(Si) irradiation, which recovered to 90.6% after annealing for 15 minutes. For the 1080 nm oscillator, its power dropped by almost 13% under 3 krad(Si) irradiation, recovering to 91.2% after 30-min annealing. We further constructed a rate equation model and calculated the radiation sensitivity of the fiber irradiation position and fiber pumping scheme. We find that the radiation-resistant performance of the backward pumping is better than that of the forward pumping. Our result is valuable to understand the radiation-induced darkening effect and for the development of radiation-resistant fiber lasers.
Klotho suppresses growth and invasion of colon cancer cells through inhibition of IGF1R-mediated PI3K/AKT pathway.

Abstract:Klotho (KL) was originally characterized as an aging suppressor gene, and has been identified as a tumor suppressor gene in a variety of cancers including colon cancer. However, the potential role and molecular events for KL in colon cancer remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the expression of KL in human colon cancer by immunohistochemistry, and to analyze the correlation between KL expression and clinicopathological characteristics of patients with colon cancer. Functional analysis after lentivirus-mediated gain of KL expression was used to assess the tumor growth and invasion in colon cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. The rate of KL expression was significantly decreased in cancer tissues compared with that in adjacent non-cancer tissues (ANCT) (60.3 vs.77.9%, P=0.022), and KL expression was negatively associated with Dukes staging (P=0.034) and depth of tumor invasion (P=0.008). Overexpression of KL in vitro inhibited cell proliferative activities and invasive potential in colon cancer cells, companied with decreased expression of p-IGF1R, p-PI3K, p-AKT, PCNA and MMP-2. In addition, the tumor volumes in the HT-29 subcutaneous tumor model treated with lentivirus‑mediated KL vector (Lv-KL) was significantly smaller than those of the negative control (NC) group (P<0.01). Taken together, our findings indicate that the expression of KL is downregulated in human colon caner and correlates with tumor invasion and Dukes staging, while overexpression of KL suppresses growth and invasion through inhibition of IGF1R-mediated PI3K/AKT pathway in colon cancer cells, suggesting that KL may serve as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of colon cancer.

Abstract:In this work, quasi-static mode degradation in high power fiber amplifiers has been investigated experimentally. An increase of M2 from 1.3 to 2.6 with distortion of the beam profile is observed, which results in the signal spectra and backward light characterization departing from the traditional phenomena. The amplifier has been operated at the same input pump power of 705 W for nearly 2.2 hours to investigate the relationship between quasi-static mode degradation and photodarkening. The evolution of M2 factor/beam profile, mode correlation coefficient and output laser power at different working times indicate that the quasi-static mode degradation in the high power fiber amplifiers is dependent on photodarkening and evolves on the scale of tens of minutes. A visible green light has been injected to photobleach the gain fiber for 19 hours, which reveals that the quasi-static mode degradation has been suppressed simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detail report of photodarkening-induced quasi-static degradation in high power fiber amplifiers.

Abstract:In recent years, transverse mode instability (TMI) has been widely observed in fiber laser amplifier systems. The transverse mode instability phenomenon in fiber laser oscillators is less studied. Here, we focus on the dynamical output properties, i.e., its temporal signal and modal characteristics in a 30-μm-core-diameter ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser oscillator. The TMI occurs at a pumping power around 310 W. Different from amplifiers, the basic oscillation frequency is quite low, at around 100 Hz, changing with time and pump power. When the fiber laser oscillator operates beyond TMI threshold at 357 W or 377 W for a while, the temporal fluctuation slowly disappears together with a decreased oscillation frequency, and appears again later. Based on the mode decomposition technique, we find that during the period of fluctuation disappearance at 357 W, the power output stays low and the output beam is still a mixture of fundamental mode and higher-order modes. The fundamental mode content is calculated to be averagely higher when temporal fluctuation disappears, increasing from ∼57% to ∼63%. Our results indicate complex interaction between the fiber laser oscillation and the TMI effect, and calls for more attention into understanding TMI in fiber laser oscillators.

Abstract:We present an investigation of the effect of pumping wavelength on the threshold of transverse mode instability (TMI) in high-power ytterbium-doped fiber laser. By using a fiber laser amplifier with a bidirectional pumping structure, we obtain the TMI thresholds under wavelength-stabilized and non-wavelength-stabilized 976 nm laser diodes (LDs) pumping scheme. The results show that the non-wavelength-stabilized LD pump has a higher TMI threshold compared to the wavelength-stabilized LD pump. By optimizing the operating current of the non-wavelength-stabilized 976nm LD, a ~4kW output laser with single-mode beam quality (M2~1.3) is achieved, with an optical to optical (O-O) efficiency of ~83.8%. The analysis yields that when the pumping wavelength deviates from the 976 nm peak, the TMI threshold can be increased. This reveals that optimizing pump source wavelength has great potential for suppressing TMI in the power scaling of fiber lasers.

Abstract:This study reports the radical elimination of the photodarkening (PD)-effect in Yb-doped fiber through deuterium loading. With deuterium pre-loading, no PD-induced excess loss of the Yb-doped fiber was observed under 915-nm pumping conditions. Moreover, the existing loss induced by the PD effect was also eliminated via deuterium loading, and the excess loss declined to nearly 0 dB/m. The method was also validated in a KW-level fiber laser experimental setup. In the 20/400-mu m deuterium pre-loaded Yb-doped fiber, an output laser power of 1630 W and beam quality factor (M-2) of 1.69 were obtained. The two parameters remained stable during the entire continuous operation process of 40 min, and displayed very little power fluctuation of <0.5%. The results of our experiments confirmed that deuterium loading can protect Yb-doped fibers from the PD effect, thereby improving the power and mode stability, which is often deteriorated by PD. Notably, the results of this study are beneficial in terms of further development of high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:Effect of mode competition on photodarkening distribution of Yb-doped fiber lasers is studied. The mode competition model is introduced into photodarkening research to compare gain and inversion rate of different modes. Based on the power-law dependence of photodarkening rate on inversion, the distribution of photodarkening could be derived from that of inversion, which is calculated from the mode competition model. Transverse and longitudinal variations of photodarkening are obtained for fibers with different parameters. The photodarkening rate is not identical across and along the active fiber, and it is higher in the core rim and the pump injection end of the fiber. Reasons for these distributions are discussed and analyzed, including differences in gain and inversion rate for each mode, differences in field intensity distribution of each mode, and way of pumping. A three-dimensional distribution of photodarkening could be acquired by combining the transversal and longitudinal photodarkening distributions. Besides, the relationship between light intensity and photodarkening is illustrated. And the impact of core pumping on photodarkening is discussed.

Abstract:We present an overview of theoretical analysis and experimental observation of the spatio-temporal transverse mode instability in polarization-maintaining high-gain fiber amplifiers with a high concentration of Yb3+ ions and core diameters of 8-10 m. The nonlinear power transformation of the LP01 fundamental mode into the high-order modes is explained by a traveling refractive index grating accompanying a population grating induced by the mode interference field. The origin of the refractive index gratings is discussed. The threshold power for the transverse mode instability is found to depend on the fiber core diameter, numerical aperture, dopant concentration and the signal bandwidth. The threshold power is observed to decrease dramatically in the presence of a backward reflection of a signal from the output fiber facet.

Abstract:The transverse mode instability (TMI) is a thermal-optical effect, inducing a sudden deterioration of beam quality and average power. This non-linear effect will greatly limit the power scaling of fiber lasers. We demonstrate a direct pump modulation to mitigate TMI in a 30 μm-core-diameter all-fiber laser oscillator. It only relies on function generator and pump drivers without the need of feedback control units. The groups of pump LDs and pump drivers and the phase difference between the channels of function generator have a great impact on the beam stability. Compared with the TMI threshold 180 W in continuous wave (CW) mode, the maximum average output power of a stabilized beam is increased up to 310 W via a multi-parameter-based direct pump modulation.

Abstract:A new passive mitigation strategy for the effect of transverse mode instability is presented in this work. This technique requires the use of a polarization-maintaining fiber in which light is coupled with a polarization state oriented around 45 with respect to the main polarization axes of the fiber. Since the modal beat length in each of the main polarization axes of the fiber is slightly different, the aforementioned coupling condition leads to the modal interference pattern being periodically washed out. Such a situation at the end leads to a weakening of the thermally-induced refractive index grating and to an increase of the threshold for the effect of transverse mode instability that can amount to ~50%.

Abstract:In this work, Na+ ions doping into the Yb-doped fiber is proposed to improve the photo-darkening resistance. The results show that the photo-darkening induced excess loss at equilibrium state at 633nm, 702 nm, 810 nm, and 1041 nm is 115.54dB/m, 86.87dB/m, 25.51 dB/m, 2.92 dB/m, respectively, when co-doping with Na+ ions. More than 30% excess loss is reduced comparing to the Yb-doped fiber without Na+ ions. The mechanism of Na+ ions doping to mitigate the PD excess loss is discussed. Besides, we measured the laser efficiency of Yb/Al/Na co-doped fiber to be 76.1%. This result remains almost the same with Yb-doped fiber and proves that the addition of Na+ ions do not deteriorate the fiber slope efficiency. The background loss of the two fibers also stays close. The results indicate this method is promising in high power fiber laser development.

Abstract:Transverse mode instability (TMI) in fiber lasers refers to the phenomenon of dynamic coupling between the fundamental mode (FM) and high-order modes (HOMs) when the pumping power exceeds a certain threshold, which seriously affects the power scaling of fiber laser. In order to improve the TMI threshold in the fiber laser, we optimized the pump wavelength both consider the quantum defect and the pump absorption. In the experiment, the pump wavelength is optimized and a wavelength-stabilized laser diode (LD) with a central wavelength of 969 nm is proposed as the pump source to suppress the TMI. A forward-pumped Yb-doped fiber laser oscillator with a core/cladding diameter of 30/400 µm was built experimentally. Experimental results show that the TMI threshold of the laser is 719 W when pumped by 969 nm LDs, which is 3.45 times that value when pumped by commonly used 976 nm LDs.

Abstract:Recent advances in thulium doped fibers have significantly improved the optical conversion efficiencies, indicating their potential utility for a variety of applications. Recently, kilowatt-class fiber amplifiers have been demonstrated with narrow linewidth operation. However, their limitations in scaling to higher powers aren’t well understood. While thermal mode instability (TMI) is a well-known limitation in ytterbium doped fiber amplifiers, no experimental data exists for CW thulium doped fiber amplifiers. As such, it’s difficult to quantify or predict when this limitation is expected to impact TDFA’s. Here, we report on the first measurements of TMI in CW thulium doped fiber amplifiers. We characterize the TMI threshold of both 20μm and 25μm fibers by measuring the beam quality, relative intensity noise (RIN), and polarization extinction ratio (PER). In particular, a strong dependence on the TMI threshold with the fiber length is noted. Counter intuitively, measurements show that short fibers have significantly higher TMI thresholds than longer fiber lengths; indeed doubling the fiber length can reduce the TMI threshold by almost 50%. By optimizing the fiber length, a 20/400μm thulium doped fiber amplifier is scaled to 905W, with 57% optical conversion efficiency and a linewidth 5 GHz.

Abstract:Mode instability with different mode excitation has been investigated by off-splicing the fusion point in a 4 kW-level monolithic fiber laser system, which reveals that the fiber systems exciting more high order mode content exhibits lower beam quality but higher mode instability threshold. The static-to-dynamic mode degradation and dynamic-only mode degradation have also been observed in the same high power fiber amplifier by varying the mode excitation, which implicates that the mode excitation plays an important role in mode characteristics in high power fiber lasers. By employing a seed with near fundamental mode beam quality, only dynamic mode degradation-mode instability sets in with negligible static beam quality degradation. Then the fusion point in the seed laser is offset spliced to excite high order mode. As the output power of the main amplifier scales, the beam quality degrades with the beam profile being static, and then the dynamic mode instability sets in, the power threshold of which is higher than that with good beam quality seed. We consider that the static mode degradation is caused by the presence of incoherent supposition of fundamental and high order mode, which leads to that the measured dynamic mode instability threshold is higher.

Abstract:Raman fiber lasers (RFLs), which are based on the stimulated Raman scattering effect, generate laser beams and offer distinct advantages such as flexibility in wavelength, low quantum defects, and absence from photo-darkening. However, as the power of the RFLs increases, heat generation emerges as a critical constraint on further power scaling. This escalating thermal load might result in transverse mode instability (TMI), thereby posing a significant challenge to the development of RFLs. In this work, a static model of the TMI effect in a high-power Raman fiber amplifier based on stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering is established considering higher-order mode excitation. The variations of TMI threshold power with different seed power levels, fundamental mode purities, higher-order mode losses, and fiber lengths are investigated, while a TMI threshold formula with fundamental mode pumping is derived. This work will enrich the theoretical model of TMI and extend its application scope in TMI mitigation strategies, providing guidance for understanding and suppressing TMI in the RFLs.

Abstract:The key remaining technological challenge to the realization of further power scaling for high-power fiber laser systems is overcoming the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. In past years, chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to suppress SRS in high-power fiber amplifiers. However, the weak reflection at the Bragg wavelength could be strongly amplified, which not only limits the power and efficiency but also degrades the beam quality. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the influence of the residual Bragg reflection of CTFBGs on SRS suppression in high-power fiber laser systems. Two groups of CTFBGs with different Bragg reflection wavelengths are fabricated and used for the comparison experiments. Test results show that the CTFBGs of longer Bragg wavelengths have a better suppression effect, in particular, at a higher power level. By further moving the Bragg wavelength of a CTFBG out of the Raman gain spectral range, a better suppression effect and a promotion in laser efficiency could be achieved, which is very useful for further power scaling.
Reliability and Photodarkening in 790Nm-Pumped 2μm Fiber Lasers

Abstract:Recent progress on high efficiency Tm-doped silica fibers pumped at 790nm has enabled the demonstration of a 2 mu m CW fiber laser operating at the 1kW power level and with single mode beam quality [1]. In addition to this state-of-the-art high power research, Tm-doped fibers are now starting to find applications in lasers with nsec [2] and psec [3] pulsed operation, as well as lower power CW lasers (50-100W) in the 1940nm wavelength region for medical use [4].As with Yb-doped fibers, the question of photodarkening needs to be addressed to ensure the long term fiber reliability is appropriate for the application. In a recent paper [5], we proposed that the up-conversion process in highly doped Tm-fibers was significantly quenched when compared with lower concentration fibers, under 790nm pumping. This trend was also observed in the photodarkening rate as measured in a CW 2 mu m fiber laser cavity operating around 20W output power. In this controlled experiment, the rate of photodarkening dropped from 15% per 1000 hours in low concentration fiber to less than 1% in a fiber doped with 4.6% Tm.In this paper we review the 20W results of our earlier work and then confirm the long term reliability of 1940nm CW fiber lasers operating at higher (40W) output power, presenting results for a laser operating for 1200 hours without significant loss of output power (around 12% total power variation). Over any given 24-hour period during this experiment, the laser operates open loop with around 8% total power variation, in an air cooled configuration.
