Abstract:We experimentally study the synchronization of chaos generated by semiconductor lasers in a cascade injection configuration, i.e., a tunable master laser is used to generate chaos by optical injection in a transmitter laser that injects light into a receiver laser. Chaos synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver lasers is achieved with a correlation coefficient of 90 % for a measurement bandwidth up to 35 GHz. Two parameter regions of good synchronization are found, corresponding to the alignment of the oscillation frequencies of the receiver laser with either the transmitter laser or the master laser.

Abstract:We examine the dynamics of semiconductor lasers coupled in a ring configuration. The lasers, which have stable output intensity when isolated, behave chaotically when coupled unidirectionally in a closed chain. In this way, we show that neither feedback nor bidirectional coupling is necessary to induce chaotic dynamics at the laser output. We study the synchronization phenomena arising in this particular coupling architecture and discuss its possible application to chaos-based communications. Next, we extend the study to bidirectional coupling and propose an appropriate technique to optical chaos encryption/decryption in closed chains of mutually coupled semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate optical injection in semiconductor ring lasers and disclose several dynamical regimes. Through numerical simulations and bifurcation continuation, two separate parameter regions in which two different injection-locked solutions coexist are revealed, in addition to a region in which a frequency-locked limit cycle coexists with an injection-locked solution. Finally, an antiphase chaotic regime without the involvement of any carrier dynamics is revealed. Parallels are drawn with the onset of chaos in the periodically forced Duffing oscillator.

Abstract:A chaos-based communication scheme allowing simultaneous bidirectional message transmission (Opt. Lett. 32, 403, 2007) is investigated numerically. Incoherent feedback and coupling case is analyzed, which is expected in real long-distance optical communication systems. It is shown that identical synchronization of chaotic laser waveforms and bidirectional message transmission are possible as in the coherent coupling case. However, the chaotic regime at incoherent feedback and coupling is quite different. It is regular destabilized relaxation oscillations with the chaotic envelope. Such dynamics leads to restriction of the transmitting signal bit rate by a portion of relaxation oscillations frequency.

Abstract:We consider a line of three mutually coupled lasers with time delays and study chaotic synchronization of the outer lasers. Two different systems are presented: optoelectronically coupled semiconductor lasers and optically coupled fiber lasers. While the dynamics of the two systems are very different, robust synchronization of end lasers is obtained in both cases over a range of parameters. Here, we present analysis and numerical simulation to explain some of the observed synchronization phenomena. First, we introduce the system of three coupled semiconductor lasers and discuss the onset of oscillations that occurs via a bifurcation as the coupling strength increases. Next, we analyze the synchronization of the end lasers by examining the dynamics transverse to synchronized state. We prove that chaotic synchronization of the outer semiconductor lasers will occur for sufficiently long delays, and we make a comparison to generalized synchronization in driven dissipative systems. It is shown that the stability of synchronous state (as indicated by negative Lyupunov exponents transverse to the synchronization manifold) depends on the internal dissipation of the outer lasers. We next present numerical simulations for three coupled fiber lasers, highlighting some of the differences between the semiconductor and fiber laser systems. Due to the large number of coupled modes in fiber lasers, this is a good system for investigating spatio-temporal chaos. Stochastic noise is included in the fiber laser model, and synchrony of the outer lasers is observed even at very small coupling strengths.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the modified single-mode rate equations of semiconductor lasers (SCLs) wherefrom the high dimension of complex dynamics of hyperchaotic islands is studied. Detailed analytical and numerical analysis are investigated under the conjugated impact of three decisive parameters of SCL-systems most specifically, the impact of a new hyperchaotic parameter. Thereby, various quantifying dynamic methods are applied and underscore high-dimensional hyperchaotic states as well as fractal characteristics of new hyperchaotic attractors featuring an entangled central part. The high dimension of the said hyperchaos is also supported by a constructive interference of specific control parameters used which give arise to a complex dynamics of the maximum Lyapunov exponent by means of various two-parameter bifurcation diagrams. Additionally, several cross-sections of Poincaré map bring out odd folded dynamical structures and irregular truncated torus pertaining thereto. In this light, the electronic circuit of the modified model is constructed and simulated in the PSpice environment so as to further support analytical and numerical findings. Finally, controlling hyperchaos is structurally investigated, resulting in the suppression of hyperchaotic states with the generation of continuous wave emission, periodic and quasi-periodic attractors.

Abstract:Optomechanical cavities, with nonlinear photon-phonon interactions, offer a more compact approach to chaos generation than conventional feedback-based optical systems. However, proper study on long-distance chaos synchronization of two optomechanical cavities connected by a long optical fiber is still unexplored. In this work, we theoretically investigate all-optical complete synchronization between unidirectionally coupled optomechanical cavities. Traditionally, achieving complete synchronization in nonlinear coupled oscillators and in optical systems necessitates identical systems. Our findings, which arise naturally from the fundamental mathematical properties of optomechanical cavities, demonstrate that parameter heterogeneity can, in fact, not only enable complete synchronization but make it stable.

Abstract:By studying laser systems with multiple time delays, we demonstrate that the signatures of time delays in the autocorrelation coefficient and the mutual information of the laser output can be erased for systems with variable time delays. This property makes such laser systems highly suitable for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also present the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled variable multiple time delay laser diodes with electro-optical feedbacks.

Abstract:We describe a new opto-electronic device with time-delayed feedback that uses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as passive nonlinearity and a semiconductor laser as a current-to-optical-frequency converter. Bandlimited feedback allows tuning of the characteristic time scales of both the periodic and high dimensional chaotic oscillations that can be generated with the device. Our implementation of the device produces oscillations in the frequency range of tens to hundreds of MHz. We develop a model and use it to explore the experimentally observed Andronov-Hopf bifurcation of the steady state and to estimate the dimension of the chaotic attractor.

Abstract:Chaotic dynamics has been reported in many physical systems and has affected almost every field of science. Chaos involves hypersensitivity to the initial conditions of a system and introduces unpredictability into its output. Thus, it is often unwanted. Interestingly, the very same features make chaos a powerful tool to suppress decoherence, achieve secure communication and replace background noise in stochastic resonance—a counterintuitive concept that a system's ability to transfer information can be coherently amplified by adding noise. Here, we report the first demonstration of chaos-induced stochastic resonance in an optomechanical system, as well as the optomechanically mediated chaos transfer between two optical fields such that they follow the same route to chaos. These results will contribute to the understanding of nonlinear phenomena and chaos in optomechanical systems, and may find applications in the chaotic transfer of information and for improving the detection of otherwise undetectable signals in optomechanical systems.
Complexity of chaotic optical frequency combs

Abstract:The dynamics of a single-mode semiconductor laser induced by the optical injection of a frequency comb are analyzed through the lens of complexity. In particular, the focus is dynamics outside the injection-locking region. Permutation entropy (P.E.) and chaos bandwidth (CBW) are used to quantify complexity. Various numerically simulated system outputs across the frequency detuning range and for different injection strengths are considered. Numerically simulated outputs from a single-mode injection system in the absence of comb injection are compared to comment on the origin of the reported complexity. Furthermore, experimental outputs are used to confirm the findings. Despite the presence of periodic dynamics originating from the frequency comb, the presented system generates remarkably high complex outputs with P.E. up to 0.99 maintained over an extended period of observation and long timescales with CBW up to 25 GHz.

Dual-lag synchronization between coupled chaotic lasers due to path-delay interference

Abstract:We study experimentally the synchronization dynamics of two semiconductor lasers coupled unidirectionally via two different delayed paths. The emitter laser operates in a chaotic regime characterized by low-frequency fluctuations due to optical feedback and induces a synchronized dynamical activity in the receiver laser, which operates in the continuous-wave regime when uncoupled. Different delays in the two coupling paths lead to the coexistence of two time lags in the synchronized dynamics of the oscillators. This dual-lag synchronization degrades the average synchronization quality of the system of coupled lasers and hinders the transmission of information between them. Numerical simulation results agree with the experimental observations, and allow us to explore this phenomenon in a wide parameter range, and quantify the degree of signal transmission degradation caused by this chaotic path-delay interference.

Abstract:The operation of an optical neural network via a feed-forward (FF) configuration is experimentally simulated in the laboratory. The FF setup is tested using optical injection (OI), and the behavior of follower laser diodes (FLDs) subjected to chaotic modulation is examined. The last two laser diodes (LDs) are exposed to different weights of chaotic modulated signals through optical filtration and attenuation. Observations of the emissions from these two FLDs during FF operation are verified by frequency spectra calculated from time-series data. Signal broadening is assessed by measuring the full width at half maximum (FWHM), and chaotic signal spikes are analyzed by counting the number of peaks associated with signal amplitudes for the FLDs. Additionally, LD control parameters, including the bias voltage of the influencer laser diodes (ILD1, ILD2) and two additional FLDs, are examined. A maximum FWHM of 1.25 GHz for FLD2 is observed with a bias voltage of 3.6 V and a modulated signal attenuation of −12 dB. To determine the synchronization state, the correlation between the ILDs and FLDs is calculated. Results indicate fluctuations between negative and positive values, with the best correlation value being 0.4. These results confirm anti-synchronized ILD-FLDs, which are crucial for ensuring privacy in transmitting units within a chaotic optical communication system simulating an optical neural network.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-channel chaos generation scheme, which can simultaneously produce multiple chaotic signals with wideband spectrum and suppressed time-delay signature (TDS). In this scheme, we introduce an external self-phase-modulated feedback (ESPMF) to improve the optical bandwidth of the initial chaos generated by a conventional external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL), then optical tunable filters (OTFs) are utilized to simultaneously extract three-channel chaotic outputs. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has three main advantages. Firstly, it can simultaneously generate multiple chaotic outputs with different central wavelengths and low correlations. Secondly, the bandwidth of original ECSL-based chaos can be improved by several times, and the undesired TDS characteristics in the original chaos can be completely suppressed to an indistinguishable level (lower than 0.02). Thirdly, the bandwidths of these chaotic outputs are flexible and can be adjusted within a wide range of 20 GHz by controlling the filter bandwidths. In addition, we demonstrate an application of the proposed chaos generation scheme in random bit generation (RBG), and multi-channel high-speed random bit sequences with a total generation rate over Tbs and NIST verified randomness are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:Optomechanical oscillators stand out as high-performance and versatile candidates for serving as reference clocks in sequential photonic integrated circuits. Indeed, they have the unique capability of simultaneously generating mechanical tones and optical signal modulations at frequencies determined by their geometrical design. In this context, the concept of synchronization introduces a powerful means to precisely coordinate the dynamics of multiple oscillators in a controlled manner, thus increasing efficiency and preventing errors in signal processing photonic systems or communication interfaces. In this work, we demonstrate the cascaded injection locking of a pair of silicon-based optomechanical crystal cavities to an external reference signal that subtly modulates the laser driving one of the oscillators. Both cavities interact solely through a weak mechanical link, making the extension of this synchronization mechanism to an increased number of optomechanical oscillators within a common chip more feasible than relying solely on optical interactions. Thus, the combination of the obtained results, supported by a numerical model, with remote optical injection locking schemes discussed in the literature, lays the groundwork for the distribution of reference signals within large networks of processing elements in future phonon-photon hybrid circuits.

Synchronization in coupled laser arrays with correlated and uncorrelated disorder

Abstract:The effect of quenched disorder in a many-body system is experimentally investigated in a controlled fashion. It is done by measuring the phase synchronization (i.e. mutual coherence) of 400 coupled lasers as a function of tunable disorder and coupling strengths. The results reveal that correlated disorder has a non-trivial effect on the decrease of phase synchronization, which depends on the ratio of the disorder correlation length over the average number of synchronized lasers. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations and analytic derivations.

Abstract:Cluster synchronization is a general phenomenon in a network of non-locally coupled oscillators. Here, we show that cluster synchronization occurs in semiconductor lasers, where the beat notes between the pairs of adjacent longitudinal modes of the laser cavity constitute a collection of coupled phase oscillators. Non-local coupling arises from the standing-wave nature of the cavity with finite mirror reflectivities, which we can actively control. Varying the coupling, we can bring the laser into a state of cluster synchronization where the two beat note families oscillate at two distinct collective frequencies. Using a coherent beat note detection technique, we show that the beat notes within the two families are synchronized in the opposite configurations—in-phase and antiphase.
