Abstract:Interband Cascade Lasers (ICL) have matured into a versatile technological platform in the mid-infrared spectral domain. To broaden their applicability even further, ongoing research pursues the emission of ultrashort pulses. The most promising approach is passive mode-locking with a fast saturable absorber. However, despite vast attempts no passive mode-locked ICL has been demonstrated up to date. In this study we perform pump-probe measurements on the ICL gain and show that its dynamics are mainly ($\sim$70%) governed by a fast recovery time of 2 ps. Our findings explain why passive mode-locking has not succeeded so far, shedding a new light on ICL dynamics as we propose strategies to overcome the current limitations.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.
Gain dynamics driven broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse in ultrafast fiber laser

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:We report rich nonlinear dynamics in integrated coupled lasers with ultra-short coupling delay. Mutually stable locking, period-1 oscillation, frequency locking, quasi-periodicity and chaos are observed experimentally. The dynamic behaviors are reproduced numerically by solving coupled delay differential equations that take the variation of both frequency detuning and coupling phase into account. Moreover, it is pointed out that the round-trip frequency is not involved in the above nonlinear dynamical behaviors. Instead, the relationship between the frequency detuning Δν and the relaxation oscillation frequency νr under mutual injection are found to be critical for the various observed dynamics in mutually coupled lasers with very short delay.

Abstract:Based on the rate equation model, we study the phase locking and self-mixing properties of optically mutual-injected terahertz quantum cascade lasers. Within the phase-locked range, the laser array works steadily at the same frequency, and the electric field amplitudes are stable. Out of the phase-locked range, the instantaneous frequencies and electric field amplitudes oscillate with time. The spontaneous emission noise of mutual-injected QCLs is higher than that of free-running lasers with the same parameters. Mutual-injected QCLs for self-mixing velocity measurement are also analyzed and simulated. When the array works in the phase-locked range, simulation with a moving target shows that self-mixing signals can be observed from each laser. These results are helpful for further understanding the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of THz QCLs under optical injection and provide theoretical support for the development of self-mixing measurement techniques using QCL arrays.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate optical injection in semiconductor ring lasers and disclose several dynamical regimes. Through numerical simulations and bifurcation continuation, two separate parameter regions in which two different injection-locked solutions coexist are revealed, in addition to a region in which a frequency-locked limit cycle coexists with an injection-locked solution. Finally, an antiphase chaotic regime without the involvement of any carrier dynamics is revealed. Parallels are drawn with the onset of chaos in the periodically forced Duffing oscillator.

Abstract:The dynamics of semiconductor lasers subject to dual optical injections are numerically investigated with a zero linewidth enhancement factor. With the aid of stability maps, we show that different chaotic and nonlinear dynamics can be produced (even with zero linewidth enhancement factor) by injecting an additional optical signal. We also study the bifurcation of the system and the carrier dynamics under dual optical injection and a zero linewidth enhancement factor.

Abstract:Multiple nonlinear states of a Fabry-Perot (FP) laser under external optical injection and their applications are experimentally studied. The intensity noise of the FP laser has been demonstrated to be optimally suppressed under injection locking state, and the comparison between stable locking range and noise suppression range at different injection powers has been made. Photonic microwaves can be acquired at both period-one and period-two states. When an external RF signal is added to the FP laser operated at period-one state, its nonlinear state is switched to period-two state, which indicates the equivalence between external optical and electrical modulation added to the FP laser. At the same time, the photonic microwave linewidth can be obviously narrowed as an effect of external RF modulation.

Abstract:Interband cascade lasers (ICLs) stand out due to their low threshold current and minimal power consumption, rendering them viable sources for compact and mobile devices in the mid-infrared. Since their first demonstration, they experienced major performance improvements. Many of them originate, on one hand, from technological enhancements and, on the other hand, also from restricted numerical analysis. Encouraged by the impact of restricted models, an ICL-specific simulation tool can lead to performance breakthroughs and a better comprehension of governing mechanisms. Drawing from an evaluation of existing tools designed for quantum cascade structures, we implemented a self-consistent density matrix rate equation model generalized to simulate the transport in both conduction and valence band heterostructures. Albeit the extensive inclusion of the quantum effects, special care was taken to maintain a high numerical efficiency. Our charge transport model additionally considers optical field calculations, allowing for predictive calculations of light-current-voltage (LIV) curves. We benchmark the model against well-established ICL designs and demonstrate reliable performance predictability. Additionally, we give detailed insights into device characteristics extracted from our model. This ultimately allows us to deepen our understanding of ICLs and define existing and generate novel designs.

Abstract:We experimentally study the synchronization of chaos generated by semiconductor lasers in a cascade injection configuration, i.e., a tunable master laser is used to generate chaos by optical injection in a transmitter laser that injects light into a receiver laser. Chaos synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver lasers is achieved with a correlation coefficient of 90 % for a measurement bandwidth up to 35 GHz. Two parameter regions of good synchronization are found, corresponding to the alignment of the oscillation frequencies of the receiver laser with either the transmitter laser or the master laser.

Thermo-optical spiking and mixed-mode oscillations in injected Kerr microcavities

Abstract:We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of vertically emitting Kerr microcavities under detuned optical injection, considering the impact of slow thermal effects. Our model integrates thermal detuning caused by refractive index shifts due to heating. Through numerical and analytical approaches, we uncover a rich spectrum of dynamical behaviors, including excitable thermo-optical pulses, mixed-mode oscillations, and chaotic spiking, governed by a higher-dimensional canard scenario. Introducing a long external feedback loop with time delays comparable to the microcavity photon lifetime but shorter than thermal relaxation timescales, reveals how delay affects excitability and stabilizes temporal localized states. Our findings extend the understanding of excitable systems, demonstrating how thermal and feedback mechanisms interplay to shape nonlinear optical dynamics. Further, our approach paves the way for the study of cavity stabilization and cavity cooling using an additional control beam.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the population dynamics in a single photon resonant three-level cascade and non-cascade energy level molecules at 532-nm wavelength. The time-dependent population in the energy levels in the presence of 100 ps (pico-second) and 100 ns (nano-second) laser pulses is described in the form of rate equations. We provide a brief idea of how the optical energy transfer takes place in the light-matter interaction and we also discuss the absorption as a function of pulse width and repetition rate. We also plot the z-scan transmittance curve as a function of number of excitation pulses participating in the absorption.

Abstract:As an important part of optical sources, nanolasers have a prominent impact in photonic circuit integration, and their nonlinear dynamics has become one of the hotspots of research in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the time-delay signature and bandwidth characteristics in a cascade-coupled nanolaser system. In which the master nanolaser is connected to an external feedback cavity and injected into the intermediate nanolaser and the slave nanolaser sequentially. The 0-1 chaos test is introduced to quantify the dynamics of the nanolaser, which can accurately distinguish whether the laser is in a chaotic state or not, and the autocorrelation function is used to analyze the time-delay characteristics in the laser output signal. This type of calculation has the advantages of fast operation speed, high accuracy and anti-noise robustness. The lower the autocorrelation value, the more difficult it is to extract useful information from the chaotic random sequence. The bandwidth is defined as the value where the range between DC and frequency contains 80% of the spectral power, which is only applicable to chaotic states. In the simulation, we compare and analyze the two cases for whether the intermediate nanolaser carries an obvious peak of the time-delay signature or not. The research results show that by selecting appropriate system parameters, the slave nanolaser can always output a broadband chaotic signal without obvious time-delay signature. Under the condition of a certain injection intensity, by changing the frequency detuning parameter, the intermediate nanolaser has obvious time-delay signature, and then the slave nano-laser can output chaotic signals which can suppress time-delay signature and enhance bandwidth in a small parameter interval. When the time-delay signal of the intermediate nanolaser is completely hidden, the slave nanolaser can achieve the suppression of the time-delay signature in a larger parameter plane, meanwhile the bandwidth is significantly enhanced. In addition, by plotting the two-dimensional spatial distribution diagram and bandwidth line diagram of the output from the nanolaser under frequency detuning and injection intensity, it was determined that the nanolaser can simultaneously suppress the delay characteristics and enhance the bandwidth under chaotic signals. This provides an important theoretical basis for the realisation of secrecy-enhanced chaotic optical communication applications.
