Abstract:A novel single-channel digital secure communication scheme based on dual synchronization of chaos in Colpitts circuits is proposed. Two binary messages, modulated by the OOK scheme and mixed together with two chaotic waveforms, serve as the only transmission signal through a single channel. Simulation results show that two messages can be successfully recovered at their respective receivers. The proposed scheme shows tremendous advantages in terms of effective utilization of spectrum resource for multi-user communications and potential applications in secret sharing systems.

Abstract:By studying laser systems with multiple time delays, we demonstrate that the signatures of time delays in the autocorrelation coefficient and the mutual information of the laser output can be erased for systems with variable time delays. This property makes such laser systems highly suitable for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also present the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled variable multiple time delay laser diodes with electro-optical feedbacks.

Abstract:A chaos-based communication scheme allowing simultaneous bidirectional message transmission (Opt. Lett. 32, 403, 2007) is investigated numerically. Incoherent feedback and coupling case is analyzed, which is expected in real long-distance optical communication systems. It is shown that identical synchronization of chaotic laser waveforms and bidirectional message transmission are possible as in the coherent coupling case. However, the chaotic regime at incoherent feedback and coupling is quite different. It is regular destabilized relaxation oscillations with the chaotic envelope. Such dynamics leads to restriction of the transmitting signal bit rate by a portion of relaxation oscillations frequency.

Abstract:By studying the autocorrelation function of the optoelectronic feedback semiconductor laser output we establish that the signatures of time delays can be erased in systems incorporating modulated feedback time delays. This property is of importance for the suitability of such laser systems for secure chaos-based communication systems. Abstract:We demonstrate multiplexing chaotic signals generated by two totally different dynamic systems (one is a Colpitts oscillator and the other is a Chua circuit) using dual synchronization and propose a method to select the proper coupling parameters. In the response systems, the cross coupling method is used, in which the voltage difference between the sum of two master oscillators and one slave oscillator is converted to current and then feed into the other slave oscillator. The result in this letter offers a potential multiuser coherent chaotic communication scheme where different chaotic oscillators can be used in one system.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-channel chaos generation scheme, which can simultaneously produce multiple chaotic signals with wideband spectrum and suppressed time-delay signature (TDS). In this scheme, we introduce an external self-phase-modulated feedback (ESPMF) to improve the optical bandwidth of the initial chaos generated by a conventional external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL), then optical tunable filters (OTFs) are utilized to simultaneously extract three-channel chaotic outputs. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has three main advantages. Firstly, it can simultaneously generate multiple chaotic outputs with different central wavelengths and low correlations. Secondly, the bandwidth of original ECSL-based chaos can be improved by several times, and the undesired TDS characteristics in the original chaos can be completely suppressed to an indistinguishable level (lower than 0.02). Thirdly, the bandwidths of these chaotic outputs are flexible and can be adjusted within a wide range of 20 GHz by controlling the filter bandwidths. In addition, we demonstrate an application of the proposed chaos generation scheme in random bit generation (RBG), and multi-channel high-speed random bit sequences with a total generation rate over Tbs and NIST verified randomness are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:We examine the dynamics of semiconductor lasers coupled in a ring configuration. The lasers, which have stable output intensity when isolated, behave chaotically when coupled unidirectionally in a closed chain. In this way, we show that neither feedback nor bidirectional coupling is necessary to induce chaotic dynamics at the laser output. We study the synchronization phenomena arising in this particular coupling architecture and discuss its possible application to chaos-based communications. Next, we extend the study to bidirectional coupling and propose an appropriate technique to optical chaos encryption/decryption in closed chains of mutually coupled semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:We study numerically a system of two lasers cross-coupled optoelectronically with a time delay where the output intensity of each laser modulates the pump current of the other laser. We demonstrate control of chaos via variable coupling time delay by converting the laser intensity chaos to the steady state. We also show that wavelength chaos in an electrically tunable distributed Bragg reflector laser diode with a feedback loop can be controlled via variable feedback time delay.

Dual-lag synchronization between coupled chaotic lasers due to path-delay interference

Abstract:We study experimentally the synchronization dynamics of two semiconductor lasers coupled unidirectionally via two different delayed paths. The emitter laser operates in a chaotic regime characterized by low-frequency fluctuations due to optical feedback and induces a synchronized dynamical activity in the receiver laser, which operates in the continuous-wave regime when uncoupled. Different delays in the two coupling paths lead to the coexistence of two time lags in the synchronized dynamics of the oscillators. This dual-lag synchronization degrades the average synchronization quality of the system of coupled lasers and hinders the transmission of information between them. Numerical simulation results agree with the experimental observations, and allow us to explore this phenomenon in a wide parameter range, and quantify the degree of signal transmission degradation caused by this chaotic path-delay interference.

Abstract:We consider a line of three mutually coupled lasers with time delays and study chaotic synchronization of the outer lasers. Two different systems are presented: optoelectronically coupled semiconductor lasers and optically coupled fiber lasers. While the dynamics of the two systems are very different, robust synchronization of end lasers is obtained in both cases over a range of parameters. Here, we present analysis and numerical simulation to explain some of the observed synchronization phenomena. First, we introduce the system of three coupled semiconductor lasers and discuss the onset of oscillations that occurs via a bifurcation as the coupling strength increases. Next, we analyze the synchronization of the end lasers by examining the dynamics transverse to synchronized state. We prove that chaotic synchronization of the outer semiconductor lasers will occur for sufficiently long delays, and we make a comparison to generalized synchronization in driven dissipative systems. It is shown that the stability of synchronous state (as indicated by negative Lyupunov exponents transverse to the synchronization manifold) depends on the internal dissipation of the outer lasers. We next present numerical simulations for three coupled fiber lasers, highlighting some of the differences between the semiconductor and fiber laser systems. Due to the large number of coupled modes in fiber lasers, this is a good system for investigating spatio-temporal chaos. Stochastic noise is included in the fiber laser model, and synchrony of the outer lasers is observed even at very small coupling strengths.

Abstract:We experimentally study the synchronization of chaos generated by semiconductor lasers in a cascade injection configuration, i.e., a tunable master laser is used to generate chaos by optical injection in a transmitter laser that injects light into a receiver laser. Chaos synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver lasers is achieved with a correlation coefficient of 90 % for a measurement bandwidth up to 35 GHz. Two parameter regions of good synchronization are found, corresponding to the alignment of the oscillation frequencies of the receiver laser with either the transmitter laser or the master laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband and wavelength-tunable chaotic laser by using a monolithically integrated wavelength-tunable chaotic semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback. The chip consists of a gain section, a distributed Bragg reflection grating section, a semiconductor optical amplifier section, and a phase section. By applying an optical feedback loop to the chaotic semiconductor laser chip, a nonlinear frequency mixing is stimulated in the laser cavity, and the chaos bandwidth is expanded to 33.6 GHz, which is 4.4 times larger than the bandwidth without optical feedback. Furthermore, the effect of feedback optical power on the bandwidth is investigated. The results show that the wide power spectrum of chaotic laser is available in a large wavelength range from 1556.44 nm to 1566.42 nm. This work explores a broadband and wavelength-tunable chaotic semiconductor laser for the wavelength division multiplexing to enlarge the capacity in chaotic secure optical communications.

Abstract:We present a key-space-enhanced optical chaos secure communication scheme using a pair of integrated four-section semiconductor lasers as transceivers, which are commonly driven by a DFB laser with bidirectional injection. The transceiver consists of two DFB laser sections, which are mutually coupled through a passive phase section and an amplifier section. The center frequencies, bias currents, coupling rate, and phase shift of the integrated laser can be used as physical key parameters and thus enhance the dimension of key space. The numerical results show that a physical key space of about 270 is achieved with a data rate of 10 Gbit/s.

Abstract:We study a model for two lasers that are mutually coupled opto-electronically by modulating the pump of one laser with the intensity deviations from the steady-state output of the other. Such a model is analogous to the equations describing the spread of certain diseases such as dengue epidemics in human populations coupled by migration, transportation, etc. In this report we consider the possibility of both in-phase (complete) and anti-phase (inverse) synchronization between the above-mentioned laser models. Depending on the coupling rates between the systems a transition from the in-phase (complete) synchronization to the anti-phase (inverse) synchronization might occur. The results are important for the disruption of the spread of the certain infectious diseases in human populations.

Abstract:Chaotic secure communication schemes encounter a conflict of key space enhancement between the consistency and complexity of chaotic transceivers. In this paper, we propose a monolithically integrated multi-section semiconductor laser (MIMSL), used as a compact chaotic transceiver with an enhanced key space. The MIMSL consists of a distributed feedback (DFB) laser section, a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) section, two phase (P) sections and a passive optical waveguide. We simulate the dynamics of the MIMSL by applying the time-dependent coupled-wave equations for traveling-wave optical fields. Further, we numerically demonstrate a security enhancement of the unidirectional chaotic communication scheme using the MIMSL transceivers with independent high-speed modulation in the phase sections of the MIMSL. The security of our scheme depends not only on the difficulty of identifying the MIMSL structural parameters and the bias current of each section, but also on the phase shifts in two phase sections providing the additional dimension of security key space. Final simulation results show that a total of 248 key spaces can be achieved with a data rate of 2.5 Gb/s and an injection strength of 0.36.

Abstract:We experimentally study a semiconductor laser subject to two optical feedbacks in a free space setup. We show that the time delay signature, manifesting itself in the chaotic output intensity, can be better suppressed than in a laser with single feedback. We demonstrate that the control of the feedback phase is essential to suppress the time delay signature, in contrast to the one-delay case, and that the feedback phase also impacts the chaotic bandwidth. By optimizing the feedback phase the time delay signature can be reduced by a factor of 2 while maintaining a large chaotic bandwidth.

Abstract:A novel long-distance multi-channel bidirectional chaos communication system over multiple paths based on two synchronized 1550nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed and studied theoretically. These two responding VCSELs (R-VCSELs) can output similar chaotic signals served as chaotic carrier in two linear polarization (LP) modes with identical signal injection from a driving VCSEL (D-VCSEL), which is subject to optical feedback and optical injection, simultaneously. Through the numerical simulations, high quality chaos synchronization between the two R-VCSELs can be obtained. Besides, the effects of varied qualities of chaos synchronization on communication performances in 20km single mode fiber (SMF) channels are investigated by regulating different internal parameters mismatch after adopting chaos masking (CMS) technique. With the decrease of the maximum cross correlation coefficient (Max-C) between the two R-VCSELs, the bit error rate (BER) of decoded message increase. Meanwhile, the BER can still be less than 10−9 when the Max-C degrades to 0.982. Based on high quality synchronization, when the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) links are introduced, 4n messages of 10Gbit/s can transmit in 180km SMF channels over n coupling paths, bidirectionally and simultaneously. Thorough tests are carried out with detailed analysis, demonstrating long-distance, multi-channel, bidirectional chaos communication based on VCSELs with chaotic signal injection.

Abstract:We proposed and verified a scheme of chaos synchronization for integrated five-section semiconductor lasers with matching parameters. The simulation results demonstrated that the integrated five-section semiconductor laser could generate a chaotic signal within a large parameter range of the driving currents of five sections. Subsequently, chaos synchronization between two integrated five-section semiconductor lasers with matched parameters was realized by using a common noise signal as a driver. Moreover, it was found that the synchronization was sensitive to the current mismatch in all five sections, indicating that the driving currents of the five sections could be used as keys of chaotic optical communication. Therefore, this synchronization scheme provides a candidate to increase the dimension of key space and enhances the security of the system.
