Abstract:Organic transformation by light-driven catalysis, especially, photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis, denoted as photo(thermal) catalysis, is an efficient, green, and economical route to produce value-added compounds. In recent years, owing to their diverse structure types, tunable pore sizes, and abundant active sites, metal–organic framework (MOF)-based photo(thermal) catalysis has attracted broad interest in organic transformations. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis for organic transformations. First, the general mechanisms, unique advantages, and strategies to improve the performance of MOFs in photo(thermal) catalysis are discussed. Then, outstanding examples of organic transformations over MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis are introduced according to the reaction type. In addition, several representative advanced characterization techniques used for revealing the charge reaction kinetics and reaction intermediates of MOF-based organic transformations by photo(thermal) catalysis are presented. Finally, the prospects and challenges in this field are proposed. This review aims to inspire the rational design and development of MOF-based materials with improved performance in organic transformations by photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as versatile candidates of interest in heterogeneous catalysis. Recent research and developments with MOFs positively endorse their role as catalysts in generating invaluable organic compounds. To harness the full potential of MOFs in value-added organic transformation, a comprehensive look at how these materials are likely to involve in the catalytic processes is essential. Mainstays of MOFs such as metal nodes, linkers, encapsulation materials, and enveloped structures tend to produce capable catalytic active sites that offer solutions to reduce human efforts in developing new organic reactions. The main advantages of choosing MOFs as reusable catalysts are the flexible and robust skeleton, regular porosity, high pore volume, and accessible synthesis accompanied with cost-effectiveness. As hosts for active metals, sole MOFs, modified MOFs, and MOFs have made remarkable advances as solid catalysts. The extensive exploration of the MOFs possibly led to their fast adoption in fabricating new biological molecules such as pyridines, quinolines, quinazolinones, imines, and their derivatives. This review covers the varied MOFs and their catalytic properties in facilitating the selective formation of the product organic moieties and interprets MOF's property responsible for their elegant performance.

Abstract:In the heterogeneous catalyst domain, there has been an incessant demand in recent decades with a focus on introducing environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. Because of their distinct structural properties, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as a new class of active materials for organic reactions; sophisticated hybrid catalytic materials can now be fabricated with improved recyclability, separability, and activity for specific organic processes by integrating MOFs with metallic nanoparticles. Herein, we deliberate on several MOF-based nanostructured catalysts that facilitate selected organic transformations. Examples comprise, among others, the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation, cyanation of aldehydes, cycloalkane oxidation, epoxidation of cyclohexenes, esterification, Heck reaction, tandem reactions, Sonogashira and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, which exploit the catalysts' reactivity, reusability, and interactions with the inherent properties of the deployed MOF-based nanostructured catalysts. The benefits, shortcomings, reusability, and efficiency aspects of the introduced catalysts are reviewed. A succinct conclusion is offered, along with a commentary on the major hurdles encountered today and prospective future research needs related to the MOF-based catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new stable class of hybrid materials synthesized, regulated and decorated by rational incorporating organic bridging ligands and metal ions with well-defined coordination geometry have become promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis in industrial applications. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, MOF catalysts can be easily recycled and reused for several times; while compared with traditional heterogeneous catalysts, they possess tunable size and catalytic centers via exchange or modification of their components. This review will sketch typical successful MOF-catalyzed reactions and summarize various catalytic centers, including the open metal sites, bifunctional acid-base sites in MOFs, as well as catalytic centers introduced to MOFs via PSM. The periodic order and site isolation of the catalytic struts in MOFs eliminate the multimolecular catalyst deactivation pathways to extend the catalytic centers' functional lifetime and facilitate the studies of their activities and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, detailed discussion on how the catalytic centers play the roles in the catalytic reactions and how to control the activity and selectivity of them will be given via typical reported examples. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, featuring crystalline porous structures, have been intensively employed as templates/precursors for the synthesis of diverse porous materials including porous carbons, metal-based compounds (such as metal oxides/carbides/phosphides) and their composites. The large surface area, high porosity and excellent tailorability of MOFs can be well inherited to their derivatives, making MOF-derived porous materials very promising for catalytic applications. Herein, we systematically summarize the versatile synthetic strategies to fabricate MOF-derived porous materials and give an overview on their recent progress on organic heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Abstract:Heterojunctions combining two photocatalysts of staggered conduction and valence band energy levels can increase the photocatalytic efficiency compared to their individual components. This activity enhancement is due to the minimization of undesirable charge recombination by the occurrence of carrier migration through the heterojunction interface with separated electrons and holes on the reducing and oxidizing junction component, respectively. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently among the most researched photocatalysts due to their tunable light absorption, facile charge separation, large surface area and porosity. The present review summarizes the current state-of-the-art in MOF-based heterojunctions, providing critical comments on the construction of these heterostructures. Besides including examples showing the better performance of MOF heterojunctions for three important photocatalytic processes, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 photoreduction and dye decolorization, the focus of this review is on describing synthetic procedures to form heterojunctions with MOFs and on discussing the experimental techniques that provide evidence for the operation of charge migration between the MOF and the other component. Special attention has been paid to the design of rational MOF heterojunctions with small particle size and controlled morphology for an appropriate interfacial contact. The final section summarizes the achievements of the field and provides our views on future developments.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is one of the most important chemical methods to mitigate the energy and environmental crisis via converting inexhaustible solar energy into clean chemical potential. The general history of the development of photocatalysis based on porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is simply divided into three branches with a focus placed on the distinct structural role of the photocatalytic center: the inorganic cluster nodes, the organic linkers, and the guests in the pores of MOFs. In each branch, these photocatalytic centers are considered to be monodispersed within the crystal lattices with the other two structure roles regularly distributed to isolate the active centers and sometimes to provide more functions other than photoactivity. This distinctive nature has rendered MOFs as promising candidates for photocatalysis not only because they combine the benefits of heterogeneous catalysis and homogeneous catalysis but also because they facilitate the possibility of merging multifunctional catalytic sites for concerted or cascade photocatalysis. The design strategy and improvement approaches for MOF-based photocatalysts are also introduced with an emphasis on structure. Our intention is for this comprehensive view of MOFs-involved photocatalysts to inspire new ideas for designing heterogeneous photocatalysts toward the better utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of toxic organic compound in water, soil and air by semiconductor catalysts such as TiO2 and ZnO have received much attention over the last two decades. However, the low quantum yield, easy agglomeration and difficult post-separation of these inorganic catalysts limit their application for large-scale applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the latest class of ordered porous solids that being intensively studied as a novel class of hybrid inorganic–organic material with ultrahigh porosity, enormous internal surface areas, together with the extraordinary tailorability of structure, dimension, size and shape. Recently exploring performance of MOFs as a new nanophotocatalyst is attracting interest of researchers working on the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and others. Although the photocatytic application of MOF materials is still at the early stage compared with the other applications of them such as gas storage, separation, biomedical application and heterogeneous catalysis, the currently available results have demonstrated that the design and construction of MOFs for photocatalyst functionality is very active. The present review aims to introduce MOF materials, the synthesized methods and highlights the progress attempts for using them as a nanophotocatalyst for degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, a promising technology to convert solar energy to chemical energy, is expected to relieve the global energy shortage and environmental pollution and therefore has attracted widespread recent research attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of micro-mesoporous hybrid material constructed from metal or metal nodes interconnected with multi-dentated organic linkers, have recently been demonstrated to be promising photocatalysts for a variety of reactions relevant to environmental and energy concerns due to their unique structure and characteristics. Considering that MOF-based photocatalysis burgeoned rapidly during the past several years, and with an aim to develop more efficient MOF-based photocatalytic materials, it is still necessary to summarize the strategies already reported to improve the performance of MOF-based photocatalytic materials, even though several excellent reviews on MOF-based photocatalysis have already been published. In this review, four structural engineering strategies to improve the efficiency of MOF-based photocatalysis have been summarized. These strategies include metal doping, ligand functionalization, the fabrication of ultrathin 2D MOFs, and defect engineering. These methods aim to enhance light absorption, improve charge separation and transportation, and create more catalytic active sites. Personal opinions on the opportunities, challenges, and developing trends of MOF-based photocatalysis were addressed. This review aims to provide guidance for the rational development of advanced MOF-based photocatalysts by elucidating the inherent relationship between their structural properties and catalytic activity. Graphical Strategies on engineering the structure of MOFs for efficient photocatalysis were summarized in this review. Personal opinions on the opportunities and challenging as well as the developing trend of MOF-based photocatalysis was also addressed. Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a family of porous crystalline materials that serve in some cases as versatile platforms for catalysis. In this review, we overview the recent developments about the use of these species as heterogeneous catalysts in olefin epoxidation and carbon dioxide cycloaddition. We report the most important results obtained in this field relating them to the presence of specific organic linkers, metal nodes or clusters and mixed-metal species. Recent advances obtained with MOF nanocomposites were also described. Finally we compare the results and summarize the major insights in specific Tables, outlining the major challenges for this emerging field. This work could promote new research aimed at producing coordination polymers and MOFs able to catalyse a broader range of CO2 consuming reactions.

Abstract:In the field of photocatalysis, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn a lot of attention. MOFs have a number of advantages over conventional semiconductors, including high specific surface area, large number of active sites, and an easily tunable porous structure. In this perspective review, different synthesis methods used to prepare MOFs and MOFs-based heterostructures have been discussed. Apart from this, the application of MOFs and MOFs-based heterostructures as photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of different types of pollutants have been compiled. This paper also highlights the different strategies that have been developed to modify and regulate pristine MOFs for improved photocatalytic performance. The MOFs modifications may result in better visible light absorption, effective photo-generated charge carriers (e-/h+), separation and transfer as well as improved recyclability. Despite that, there are still many obstacles and challenges that need to be addressed. In order to meet the requirements of using MOFs and MOFs-based heterostructures in photocatalysis for low-cost practical applications, future development and prospects have also been discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a most important approach to addressing global energy shortages and environmental issues due to its environmentally friendly and sustainable properties. The key to realizing efficient photocatalysis relies on developing appropriate catalysts with high efficiency and chemical stability. Among various photocatalysts, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hollow-structured materials have drawn increased attention in photocatalysis based on advantages like more active sites, strong light absorption, efficient transfer of pho-induced charges, excellent stability, high electrical conductivity, and better biocompatibility. Specifically, MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials are widely utilized in photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR), hydrogen evolution (HER), nitrogen fixation (NRR), degradation, and other reactions. This review starts with the development story of MOFs, the commonly adopted synthesis strategies of MOFs-derived hollow materials, and the latest research progress in various photocatalytic applications are also introduced in detail. Ultimately, the challenges of MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials in practical photocatalytic applications are also prospected. This review holds great potential for developing more applicable and efficient MOFs-derived hollow-structured photocatalysts.

Abstract:Background and Methods: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) regarded as three-dimensional analogues of coordination polymers (CPs) find utility in varied applications viz. sensing of ions and molecules, gas/small molecule absorption/separation, catalysis, gas storage, membranes and drug delivery system. During the recent years, their applications as photocatalyst for the photodegradation of aromatic dyes have been explored. In addition, computational studies have been employed to complement the experiments, which provided new insight on MOFs/CPs to understand mechanistic pathways of photocatalysis. Results and Discussion: This perspective presents the designing strategies and structures of photoactive MOFs and plausible mechanistic pathway using which they exhibited photocatalysed degradation of organic dyes a lethal component present in wastewater discharge from industries. Conclusion: The presentation study suggested that using appropriate rigid, semi-rigid and flexible organic ligands with appropriate antennae and suitable co-ligand on coordination to main group, transition and inner transition metal centers could engender targeted MOFs that can display superior photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:The unique characteristics of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs), such as structural tunability, high specific surface area, and highly organized pores, have led to their widespread applicationin catalysis. Notably, it is possible to significantly enhance the catalytic characteristics of MOFs or COFs byelaborately integrating them togther to overcome the flaws in individual MOFs and COFs, which has been receiving more and more attention. This review starts with a brief overview of the current development of MOF/COF-based catalyst and relative synthetic approaches, followed by a comprehensive and systematic analysis of their applications in photocatalysis, thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis, involving photocatalytic water splitting, photocatalytic redox reaction and photocatalytic degradation, conventional thermocatalytic redox reaction, , as well as electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction. After the above discussion, the prospects and challenges of MOF/COF composites are also proposed.

Abstract:This comprehensive overview delves into the progress of Zr‐MOFs since 2012, encompassing their design, synthesis methodologies, and applications across various chemical reactions such as C−H activation, epoxidation, oxidation, A3 coupling, C−C and C−N coupling strategies. The diverse structural variants of Zr‐MOFs are elucidated through discussions on Zr‐based secondary building units and a variety of organic ligands utilized. Within the extensive array of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), Zr‐based MOFs stand out as particularly promising materials due to their diverse structures, exceptional stability, and intriguing properties. These MOFs are currently in the early stages of development, but noteworthy strides have been achieved in recent years. This overview focuses on the progress in Zr‐MOFs since 2012, covering design, synthesis, and applications in various reactions such as C−H activation, oxidation, C−C, and C−N coupling approaches. Different Zr‐MOF structural variants are explained in terms of Zr‐based secondary building units and a variety of organic ligands. The review highlights the roles that Zr‐MOFs play in catalysis by highlighting their uses as porous carriers, molecule adsorption, and separation. It is anticipated that this kind of concentrated review on Zr‐MOFs would offer important direction for next studies investigating MOFs for catalytic applications.

Abstract:More than 95% (in volume) of all of today's chemical products are manufactured through catalytic processes, making research into more efficient catalytic materials a thrilling and very dynamic research field. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer great opportunities for the rational design of new catalytic solids, as highlighted by the unprecedented number of publications appearing over the past decade. In this review, the recent advances in the application of MOFs in heterogeneous catalysis are discussed. MOFs with intrinsic thermocatalytic activity, as hosts for the incorporation of metal nanoparticles, as precursors for the manufacture of composite catalysts and those active in photo- and electrocatalytic processes are critically reviewed. The review is wrapped up with our personal view on future research directions.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive attention, relying on the characteristic of porosity, high specific surface area and modifiability. Its semiconductor characteristics make it focus in the field of photocatalysis. Based on the classification of modification methods, this article summarized the recent researches on MOFs in the field of photocatalysis, including inner confinement metal nanoparticles, semiconductor composites and MOFs derivatives. The first two modifications aim to reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes by transferring them. The latter removes the partial ligand by calcination and retain the porous structure framework of MOFs, which improve the chemical stability of MOFs. Such MOF-based photocatalysts have been used in the fields of environmental pollution control and energy sustainable development.
