Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high value-added chemicals using clean and renewable solar energy is a very promising pathway to address energy and environmental issues. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been intensively exploited in photocatalytic CO2 reduction owing to their promising CO2 capture capability, photochemical and textural properties. In this review, we provide an overview of recent progress achieved in MOF-based photocatalysts for CO2 reduction on the basis of the reduced products, including photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO and the other organic chemicals (formic acid, methanol and methane). Diverse modification techniques for improving relevant photocatalytic performance and the corresponding structure-activity relationships are highlighted. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of CO2 capture capacity for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance over MOF-based materials. Furthermore, the opportunities, challenges and future prospects of the application of MOF-based materials for photocatalytic CO2 conversion are given, aiming at rational design of more creative MOF-based photocatalytic systems for CO2 utilization with a green and sustainable strategy.

Abstract:Considerable attention has been paid to the utilization of CO2, an abundant carbon source in nature. In this regard, porous catalysts have been eagerly explored with excellent performance for photo-/electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to high valued products. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring large surface area, high porosity, tunable composition and unique structural characteristics, have been widely exploited in catalytic CO2 reduction. This Minireview first reports the current progress of MOFs in CO2 reduction. Then, a specific interest is focused on MOFs in photo-/electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 by modifying their metal centers, organic linkers, and pores. Finally, the future directions of study are also highlighted to satisfy the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:Excessive CO2 emission due to a large amount of fossil fuel utilization has become a widespread concern, which causes both environmental and energy problems. To solve these issues, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce value-added chemicals have gained immense attention. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derived materials with high specific surface areas, controllable pore structures, and tunable chemical properties exhibit promising performance among the reported catalytic materials for CO2 conversion. This review describes the recent advances on the rational design and synthesis of MOF-based electrocatalysts and photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The importance of the catalytic processes is highlighted, followed by systematic understanding of MOF-based catalysts for CO2 reduction through electrochemical and photochemical approaches. Special emphasis of this review is to introduce basic catalyst design strategies and synthesis methods as well as their resulting electrocatalysts and photocatalysts. One of the major goals is to elucidate the structures and properties that link to their catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability towards to CO2 reduction. We also outline the challenges in this research area and propose the potential strategies for the rational design and synthesis of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have become a research forefront in the field of photocatalytic CO2 reduction attributed to their ultra-high specific surface area, adjustable structure, and abundant catalytic active sites. Particularly, MOFs can be facilely tuned to match CO2 photoreduction by utilizing post-modification of metal nodes, functionalization of organic linkers, and combination with other active materials. Herein, the recent advances in the construction strategy of MOF-based photocatalysts materials for CO2 reduction are highlighted. Some systematic modification strategies on MOF-based photocatalysts are also discussed, such as modification of metal sites and organic ligands, construction of heterojunction, introduction of single/dual-atom, and strain engineering. Finally, the future development directions of MOF-based photocatalysts in the field of CO2 reduction are presented.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has been widely studied because it can use inexhaustible solar energy as an energy source while solving the problems of fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution facing the 21st century. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), with many advantages such as high physical/chemical stability, tunable bandgap, structural diversity, large specific surface area, etc., are considered important propellants for building better photocatalytic platforms and achieving breakthroughs. This review outlines the applications of MOFs and COFs for photocatalysis in CO2 reduction, H2 generation, and environmental pollution treatment, and elucidates the relevant photocatalytic mechanisms. In particular, the methods and mechanisms for improving the photocatalytic performance of MOFs and COFs are summarized and discussed from the three aspects. Finally, the current limitations, challenges, perspectives and future development opportunities of COFs/MOFs and COF-/MOF-based photocatalysts are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Due to ever increasing environmental issues because of combustion of fossil fuels, production of renewable energy and fuels are highly demanding. Phototechnology with the use of solar energy is highly demanding for renewable fuels production. Although, different materials are under exploration, however, they are less efficient to make this technology to practical level of renewable fuels production. Cobalt (Co) based metal organic frameworks are gaining interests as photocatalyst for CO2 reduction due to its simple preparation with high photoactivity and stability. Hence, this review highlights the diverse Co-based MOFs and their applications in converting CO2 into solar fuels. Firstly, fundamentals of MOFs and photocatalytic CO2 reduction are discussed to provide insight over the nomenclature and mechanism of photocatalysis. Different Co-based MOFs are then discussed based on their structural and optical characteristics with their maximum tolerable temperature. Then, an in-depth analysis is carried out on various synthesis method for preparing different types of Co-MOFs. Different parameters such as reaction temperature, time, type of reagent and solvent used are then discussed to provide a clear picture on their effect on the formation and functionalization of MOFs. A comprehensive review is conducted on various approaches to enhance activity of pristine Co-MOFs for CO2 photo-reduction, which includes photosensitization, MOF templating, heterojunction formation and surface sensitization. Finally, a critical evaluation is carried out in view of band engineering, energy harvesting, stability and productivity to further boost the photo-conversion of CO2. The conclusions and future prospective are included for further investigation in solar energy assisted applications.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to high-value carbon-based chemicals provides a sustainable approach to achieving an artificial carbon cycle. In the decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a kind of porous crystalline porous materials featuring well-defined structures, large surface area, high porosity, diverse components, easy tailorability, and controllable morphology, have attracted considerable research attention, serving as electrocatalysts to drive CO2 reduction. In this review, the reaction mechanisms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and the structure/component advantages of MOFs meeting the requirements of electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are analyzed. After that, the representative progress for the precise fabrication of MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, focusing on catalytic site design and microenvironment modulation, are systemically summarized. Furthermore, the emerging applications and promising research for more practical scenarios related to electrochemical CO2 conversion are specifically proposed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future outlook of MOFs for electrochemical CO2 reduction are further discussed.

Abstract:Direct conversion of diluted CO2 to value-added chemical stocks and fuels with solar energy is an energy-saving approach to relieve global warming and realize a carbon-neutral cycle. The exploration of catalysts with both efficient CO2 adsorption and reduction ability is significant to achieving this goal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging in the field of low-concentration CO2 reduction due to their highly tunable structure, high porosity, abundant active sites and excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. This highlight outlines the advantages of MOFs for low-pressure CO2 adsorption and the strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of MOF materials at low CO2 concentrations, including the functionalization of organic ligands, regulation of metal nodes and preparation of MOF composites or derivatives. This paper aims to provide possible avenues for the rational design and development of catalysts with the ability to reduce low-concentration CO2 efficiently for practical applications.

Abstract:Harnessing low‐density solar energy and converting it into high‐density chemical energy through photocatalysis has emerged as a promising avenue for the production of chemicals and remediation of environmental pollution, which contributes to alleviating the overreliance on fossil fuels. In recent years, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread application in the field of photocatalysis due to their photostability, tunable structures, and responsiveness in the visible light range. However, most MOFs exhibit relatively low response to light, limiting their practical applications. MOFs‐derived nanomaterials not only retain the inherent advantages of pristine MOFs but also show enhanced light adsorption and responsiveness. This review categorizes and summarizes MOFs‐derived nanomaterials, including nanocarbons and nanometal oxides, providing representative examples for the synthetic strategies of each category. Subsequently, the recent research progress on MOFs‐derived materials in photocatalytic applications are systematically introduced, specifically in the areas of photocatalytic water splitting to H2, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic water treatment. The corresponding mechanisms involved in each photocatalytic reaction are elaborated in detail. Finally, the review discusses the challenges and further directions faced by MOFs‐derived nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis, highlighting their potential role in advancing sustainable energy production and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into value-added fuels is one of the most promising strategies for tackling the energy crisis and mitigating the "greenhouse effect." Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely investigated in the field of CO2 photoreduction owing to their high CO2 uptake and adjustable functional groups. The fundamental factors and state-of-the-art advancements in MOFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from the critical perspectives of light absorption, carrier dynamics, adsorption/activation, and reaction on the surface of photocatalysts, which are the three main critical aspects for CO2 photoreduction and determine the overall photocatalytic efficiency. In view of the merits of porous materials, recent progress of three other types of porous materials are also briefly summarized, namely zeolite-based, covalent-organic frameworks based (COFs-based), and porous semiconductor or organic polymer based photocatalysts. The remarkable performance of these porous materials for solar-driven CO2 reduction systems is highlighted. Finally, challenges and opportunities of porous materials for photocatalytic CO2 reduction are presented, aiming to provide a new viewpoint for improving the overall photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency with porous materials.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a most important approach to addressing global energy shortages and environmental issues due to its environmentally friendly and sustainable properties. The key to realizing efficient photocatalysis relies on developing appropriate catalysts with high efficiency and chemical stability. Among various photocatalysts, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hollow-structured materials have drawn increased attention in photocatalysis based on advantages like more active sites, strong light absorption, efficient transfer of pho-induced charges, excellent stability, high electrical conductivity, and better biocompatibility. Specifically, MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials are widely utilized in photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR), hydrogen evolution (HER), nitrogen fixation (NRR), degradation, and other reactions. This review starts with the development story of MOFs, the commonly adopted synthesis strategies of MOFs-derived hollow materials, and the latest research progress in various photocatalytic applications are also introduced in detail. Ultimately, the challenges of MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials in practical photocatalytic applications are also prospected. This review holds great potential for developing more applicable and efficient MOFs-derived hollow-structured photocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are robust, crystalline, and porous materials featured by their superior CO2 adsorption capacity, tunable energy band structure, and enhanced photovoltaic conversion efficiency, making them highly promising for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (PCO2RR). This study presents a comprehensive examination of the advancements in MOFs‐based PCO2RR field spanning the period from 2011 to 2023. Employing bibliometric analysis, the paper scrutinizes the widely adopted terminology and citation patterns, elucidating trends in publication, leading research entities, and the thematic evolution within the field. The findings highlight a period of rapid expansion and increasing interdisciplinary integration, with extensive international and institutional collaboration. A notable emphasis on significant research clusters and key terminologies identified through co‐occurrence network analysis, highlighting predominant research on MOFs such as UiO, MIL, ZIF, porphyrin‐based MOFs, their composites, and the hybridization with photosensitizers and molecular catalysts. Furthermore, prospective design approaches for catalysts are explored, encompassing single‐atom catalysts (SACs), interfacial interaction enhancement, novel MOF constructions, biocatalysis, etc. It also delves into potential avenues for scaling these materials from the laboratory to industrial applications, underlining the primary technical challenges that need to be overcome to facilitate the broader application and development of MOFs‐based PCO2RR technologies.

Abstract:With the impact of global warming and energy shortage, human demand for renewable energy is increasing. Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 and N2 can be converted into high-value-added products, which has broad application prospects in alleviating the energy crisis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have high porosity and structural tunability, allowing for better conversion and storage of solar energy. In the field of green photochemistry, especially photocatalytic CO2 reduction and photocatalytic N2 fixation, MOFs and MOF-related materials are potential candidates. However, MOFs as photocatalysts face many practical problems such as a cumbersome preparation process, poor repeatability, high cost, large band-gap width, limited absorption of visible light, and kinetic instability. In this review, the optimized synthesis methods of MOFs and composites are outlined, and the research progress on improving the photocatalytic performance of MOF-based photocatalysts for the reduction of CO2 and N2 is emphasized from the aspects of pure MOFs and composites.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high value-added chemicals is of great significance to address the pressing carbon cycle issues. Reticular chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials exhibits great potential and effectiveness to face CO2 challenge from capture to conversion. To date, the integrated nanocomposites of nanostructure and MOF have emerged as a powerful heterogeneous catalysts featured with multifold advantages including synergistic effects between the two interfaces, confinement effect of meso- and micropores, tandem reaction triggered by multiple active sites, high stability and dispersion, and so on. Given burgeoning carbon cycle and nanostructure@MOFs, this review highlights some of important advancements to provide a full understanding on the synthesis and design of nanostructure@MOFs composites to facilitate carbon cycle through CO2 photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and thermal conversion. Afterward, the catalytic applications of some representative nanostructure@MOFs composites are categorized, in which the origin of activity or structure-activity relationship is summarized. Finally, the opportunities and challenges are proposed for inspiring the future development of nanostructure@MOFs composites for carbon cycle.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into valuable energy and chemicals is an effective way to solve environmental problems and energy crises. Compared with other CO2 conversion methods, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion can be combined with clean energy, enhancing its energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and sustainability; the process can be improved significantly. In recent years, the self-assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands to form crystalline compounds, known as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), has attracted considerable attention. These materials have gained prominence due to their diverse range of potential applications and distinctive properties. This Review briefly introduces the basic principles of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 and the composition and properties of MOF materials. It summarizes the research progress of MOFs in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction from the following aspects: pristine MOF catalysts, MOF-based composites, and MOF-derived electrocatalysts. Finally, the development prospects of MOFs are discussed in combination with the current research status, providing a reference for the development of more efficient and stable MOF electrocatalysts.

In this context, carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are gaining significant attention as promising technologies for energy conversion utilizing renewable energy sources. However, developing advanced and highly efficient catalysts is essential to make these applications feasible. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of porous crystalline materials, have shown great potential in designing such catalysts for CO2RR and HER. Their ordered and tailorable structures, ultrahigh surface areas, and well-defined active sites make them ideal for this purpose. This review discusses the current advances, remaining challenges and future opportunities of MOF-based catalysts in CO2RR and HER. First, the strategies for synthesizing and modifying MOF-based catalysts are overviewed, including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and MOF derivatives. Then, the advanced characterization techniques are showcased to provide reaction mechanism insights. Moreover, the recent advances of MOF-based catalysts in both CO2RR and HER are compiled in detail, highlighting the structure–activity relationship of MOF materials. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of MOF-based catalysts for CO2RR and HER are described. This review provides a systemic and in-depth insight into MOF-based catalyst for CO2RR and HER, hoping that this timely and comprehensive review can shed light on the upcoming research horizons of these prosperous areas.
