Abstract:Single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth on-chip microlasers with a fast wavelength tunability play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication, light detection and ranging, to metrology and sensing. Design and fabrication of such light sources remain a challenge due to the difficulties in making a laser cavity that has an ultrahigh optical quality (Q) factor and supports only a single lasing frequency simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate a unique single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth lasing mechanism on an erbium ion-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk through simultaneous excitation of high-Q polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths. As the polygon modes are sparse within the optical gain bandwidth compared with the whispering gallery mode counterpart, while their Q factors (above 10 million) are even higher due to the significantly reduced scattering on their propagation paths, single-frequency lasing with a linewidth as narrow as 322 Hz is observed. The measured linewidth is three orders of magnitude narrower than the previous record in on-chip LN microlasers. Finally, enabled by the strong linear electro-optic effect of LN, real-time electro-optical tuning of the microlaser with a high tuning efficiency of similar to 50 pm/100 V is demonstrated.

Abstract:Laser stabilization sits at the heart of many precision scientific experiments and applications, including quantum information science, metrology and atomic timekeeping. These systems narrow the laser linewidth and stabilize the carrier by use of Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking to a table-scale, ultra-high quality factor (Q), vacuum spaced Fabry-Perot reference cavity. Integrating these cavities, to bring characteristics of PDH stabilization to the chip-scale, is critical to reduce their size, cost, and weight, and enable a wide range of portable and system-on-chip applications. We report a significant advance in integrated laser linewidth narrowing, stabilization and noise reduction, by use of a photonic integrated 4.0-meter-long coil resonator to stabilize a semiconductor laser. We achieve a 36 Hz 1/{\pi}-integral linewidth, an Allan deviation (ADEV) of 1.8x10^{-13} at 10 ms measurement time, and a 2.3 kHz/sec drift, to the best of our knowledge the lowest integral linewidth and highest stability demonstrated for an integrated reference cavity. Two coil designs, stabilizing lasers operating at 1550 nm and 1319 nm are demonstrated. The resonator is bus coupled to a 4.0-meter-long coil, with a 49 MHz free spectral range (FSR), a mode volume of 1.0x10^{10} {\mu}m^3 and a 142 million intrinsic Q, fabricated in a CMOS compatible, ultra-low loss silicon nitride waveguide platform. Our measurements and simulations show that the thermorefractive noise floor for this particular cavity is reached for frequencies down to 20 Hz in an ambient environment with simple passive vibration isolation and without vacuum or thermal isolation. The TRN limited performance is estimated to be an 8 Hz 1/{\pi} integral linewidth and ADEV of 5x10^{-14} at 10 ms, opening a stability regime that heretofore has only been available in fundamentally un-integrated systems.

Abstract:The enhanced self-Kerr nonlinearity of quantum dot molecules may be used to realize optical cavities with an ultranarrow linewidth and high gain. The resonant tunneling induces constructive interference for the self-Kerr nonlinearity, and then a narrow gain window with large normal dispersion appears with frequency detuning. The competition between linear and nonlinear dispersion leads to strong normal dispersion of the total susceptibility, which significantly narrows the cavity linewidth; the nonlinear gain introduces the total gain effects contributing to high transmission. Simulation results show that the cavity linewidth could be narrowed by nearly 30 times and the transmission peak enhanced about 40 times compared with a linear case.

Abstract:Today's precision experiments for timekeeping, inertial sensing, and fundamental science place strict requirements on the spectral distribution of laser frequency noise. Rubidium-based experiments utilize table-top 780 nm laser systems for high-performance clocks, gravity sensors, and quantum gates. Wafer-scale integration of these lasers is critical for enabling systems-on-chip. Despite progress towards chip-scale 780 nm ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, achieving sub-Hz fundamental linewidth and sub-kHz integral linewidth has remained elusive. Here we report a hybrid integrated 780 nm self-injection locked laser with 0.74 Hz fundamental and 864 Hz integral linewidths and thermorefractive-noise-limited 100 Hz 2 /Hz at 10 kHz. These linewidths are over an order of magnitude lower than previous photonic-integrated 780 nm implementations. The laser consists of a Fabry-Pérot diode edge-coupled to an on-chip splitter and a tunable 90 million Q resonator realized in the CMOS foundry-compatible silicon nitride platform. We achieve 2 mW output power, 36 dB side mode suppression ratio, and a 2.5 GHz mode-hop-free tuning range. To demonstrate the potential for quantum atomic applications, we analyze the laser noise influence on sensitivity limits for atomic clocks, quantum gates, and atom interferometer gravimeters. This technology can be translated to other atomic wavelengths, enabling compact, ultra-low noise lasers for quantum sensing, computing, and metrology.

Abstract:Lasers with high spectral purity can enable a diverse application space, including precision spectroscopy, coherent high-speed communications, physical sensing, and manipulation of quantum systems. Already, meticulous design and construction of bench Fabry-Perot cavities has made possible dramatic achievements in active laser-linewidth reduction, predominantly for optical-atomic clocks. Yet there is increasing demand for miniaturized laser systems operating with high performance in ambient environments. Here, we report a compact and robust photonic-atomic laser comprising a 2.5 cm long, 20,000 finesse, monolithic Fabry-Perot cavity integrated with a micromachined rubidium vapor cell. By leveraging the short-time frequency stability of the cavity and the long-time frequency stability of atoms, we realize an ultranarrow-linewidth laser that enables integration for extended measurements. Specifically, our laser supports a fractional-frequency stability of $1\times 10^{-13}$ at an averaging time of 20 ms, $7 \times 10^{-13}$ at 300 s, an integrated linewidth of 25 Hz that results from thermal noise, a Lorentzian linewidth as low as 0.06 Hz$^2$/Hz, and a passive vibration immunity as low as $10^{-10}$/g. Our work explores hybrid laser systems with monolithic photonic and atomic packages based on physical design.

Abstract:Lasers with hertz linewidths at time scales of seconds are critical for metrology, timekeeping, and manipulation of quantum systems. Such frequency stability relies on bulk-optic lasers and reference cavities, where increased size is leveraged to reduce noise but with the trade-off of cost, hand assembly, and limited applications. Alternatively, planar waveguide-based lasers enjoy complementary metal-oxide semiconductor scalability yet are fundamentally limited from achieving hertz linewidths by stochastic noise and thermal sensitivity. In this work, we demonstrate a laser system with a 1-s linewidth of 1.1 Hz and fractional frequency instability below 10(-14) to 1 s. This low-noise performance leverages integrated lasers together with an 8-ml vacuum-gap cavity using microfabricated mirrors. All critical components are lithographically defined on planar substrates, holding potential for high-volume manufacturing. Consequently, this work provides an important advance toward compact lasers with hertz linewidths for portable optical clocks, radio frequency photonic oscillators, and related communication and navigation systems.

Abstract:Lasers differ from other light sources in that they are coherent, and their coherence makes them indispensable to both fundamental research and practical application. In optomechanical cavities, photon and phonon lasing is facilitated by the ability of photons and phonons to interact intensively and excite one another coherently. The lasing linewidths of both phonons and photons are critical for practical application. This study investigates the lasing linewidths of photons and phonons from the underlying dynamics in an optomechanical cavity. We find that the linewidths can be accounted for by two distinct physical mechanisms in two regimes, namely the normal regime and the reversed regime, where the intrinsic optical decay rate is either larger or smaller than the intrinsic mechanical decay rate. In the normal regime, an ultra-narrow spectral linewidth of 5.4 kHz for phonon lasing at 6.22 GHz can be achieved regardless of the linewidth of the pump light, while these results are counterintuitively unattainable for photon lasing in the reversed regime. These results pave the way towards harnessing the coherence of both photons and phonons in silicon photonic devices and reshaping their spectra, potentially opening up new technologies in sensing, metrology, spectroscopy, and signal processing, as well as in applications requiring sources that offer an ultra-high degree of coherence.

Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the quantum Langevin equations have been performed for a large number of two-level atoms in a beam interacting with a low-Q cavity with the atomic initial superposition states close to the north pole of the Bloch sphere. When the pump Rabi frequency was modulated at $\Delta_{pa}$ with zero pump-atom detuning for various cavity-atom detunings, we obtained a lasing peak at the atomic resonance and superradiant lasing peaks at $\pm\Delta_{pa}$ simultaneously while the central peak exhibiting a zero frequency pulling coefficient. The linewidth of the central peak was reduced beyond the gain narrowing as the mean number of atoms was increased, resulting in a minimum linewidth as small as a millionth of the atomic or cavity linewdith. A pump carrier detuning caused asymmetric heights for the side superradiant peaks, the height difference of which can be used to lock the pump laser to the atom within the linewidth of the central lasing peak. Our results may lead to development of a new type of ultra-stable active optical clocks for future frequency standards when applied to proper atomic systems.

Abstract:We report on the generation of picosecond self–mode-locked pulses from midinfrared quantum cascade lasers, at wavelengths within the important molecular fingerprint region. These devices are based on intersubband electron transitions in semiconductor nanostructures, which are characterized by some of the largest optical nonlinearities observed in nature and by picosecond relaxation lifetimes. Our results are interpreted with a model in which one of these nonlinearities, the intensity-dependent refractive index of the lasing transition, creates a nonlinear waveguide where the optical losses decrease with increasing intensity. This favors the generation of ultrashort pulses, because of their larger instantaneous intensity relative to continuous-wave emission.
Narrowing Laser Linewidth Using Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy

Abstract:This paper provides a feasible method to narrow the linewidth of the laser by modulation transfer spectroscopy, benefiting from a high feedback bandwidth and the high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectroscopy. We experimentally stabilize the frequency of a 420 nm blue diode laser with a free-running Lorentz linewidth of 43 kHz on the quantum transition of 85 Rb, and the heterodyne experiments based on two identical configurations showing that the linewidth of laser is efficiently narrowed by 6 times, namely a Lorentz linewidth of 7 kHz. With the feedback bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio in-loop further enhanced, the scheme with a relatively simple construction can potentially achieve a sub-kHz laser linewidth.
Narrow linewidth semiconductor lasers based on nonlinear self-injection locking

Abstract:Self-injection locking techniques for stabilizing lasers have been developed using passive cavities to increase the effective lifetime of the laser cavity, thereby reducing the linewidth of the laser. We propose and demonstrate a new technique based on nonlinear self-injection locking (N-SIL) which we implement via feedback from the gain-narrowed Stokes mode of a fiber Brillouin oscillator. By blue-shifting the Stokes field back to its pump frequency with an electro-optic modulator we realize recursive linewidth reduction that eliminates the phase drift caused by spontaneous emission noise. The fundamental linewidth limit is set by the spontaneous emission limit of the nonlinear oscillator, far lower than the spontaneous emission limit of a semiconductor laser. We demonstrate the power of this approach by achieving sub-hertz fundamental linewidth from the output of a commercial DFB laser and noise performance that significantly exceeds that of conventional SIL. We also and propose alternative fully-integrated designs in CMOS-compatible photonic platforms that allow for highly compact and robust implementations.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities at the single-photon level are explored in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system, where the cavity frequency is coupled to the square of the mechanical displacement. The effective nonlinear interaction between photons and phonons is enhanced by a strong driving field, which allows one to implement the single-photon nonlinearities even if the single-photon coupling strength g(0) is much lower than the cavity decay rate.. The photon statistical properties are discussed by calculating the second-order correlation function both analytically and numerically. The results show that the single-photon nonlinearities are robust against mechanical thermal noise in the strong-coupling and sideband-resolved regime, and photon blockade and photon-induced tunneling can be realized with experimentally accessible parameters.

Abstract:The stabilization and manipulation of laser frequency by means of an external cavity are nearly ubiquitously used in fundamental research and laser applications. While most of the laser light transmits through the cavity, in the presence of some back-scattered light from the cavity to the laser, the self-injection locking effect can take place, which locks the laser emission frequency to the cavity mode of similar frequency. The self-injection locking leads to dramatic reduction of laser linewidth and noise. Using this approach, a common semiconductor laser locked to an ultrahigh- Q microresonator can obtain sub-Hertz linewidth, on par with state-of-the-art fiber lasers. Therefore it paves the way to manufacture high-performance semiconductor lasers with reduced footprint and cost. Moreover, with high laser power, the optical nonlinearity of the microresonator drastically changes the laser dynamics, offering routes for simultaneous pulse and frequency comb generation in the same microresonator. Particularly, integrated photonics technology, enabling components fabricated via semiconductor CMOS process, has brought increasing and extending interest to laser manufacturing using this method. In this article, we present a comprehensive tutorial on analytical and numerical methods of laser self-injection locking, as well a review of most recent theoretical and experimental achievements.

Abstract:Abstract Soliton microcombs provide a versatile platform for realizing fundamental studies and technological applications. To be utilized as frequency rulers for precision metrology, soliton microcombs must display broadband phase coherence, a parameter characterized by the optical phase or frequency noise of the comb lines and their corresponding optical linewidths. Here, we analyse the optical phase-noise dynamics in soliton microcombs generated in silicon nitride high-Q microresonators and show that, because of the Raman self-frequency shift or dispersive-wave recoil, the Lorentzian linewidth of some of the comb lines can, surprisingly, be narrower than that of the pump laser. This work elucidates information about the physical limits in phase coherence of soliton microcombs and illustrates a new strategy for the generation of spectrally coherent light on chip.
