Abstract:We present a laser system based on a 48 cm long optical glass resonator. The large size requires a sophisticated thermal control and optimized mounting design. A self balancing mounting was essential to reliably reach sensitivities to acceleration of below $\Delta \nu / \nu$ < 2E-10 /g in all directions. Furthermore, fiber noise cancellations from a common reference point near the laser diode to the cavity mirror and to additional user points (Sr clock and frequency comb) are implemented. Through comparison to other cavity-stabilized lasers and to a strontium lattice clock an instability of below 1E-16 at averaging times from 1 s to 1000 s is revealed.

Abstract:We stabilized the frequencies of two independent Nd:YAG lasers to two adjacent longitudinal modes of a high-finesse Fabry-Pérot resonator and obtained a beat frequency instability of 6.3 mHz at an integration time of 40 s. Referred to a single laser, this is $1.6\times10^{-17}$ relative to the laser frequency, and $1.3\times10^{-6}$ relative to the full width at half maximum of the cavity resonance. The amplitude spectrum of the beat signal had a FWHM of 7.8 mHz. This stable frequency locking is of importance for next-generation optical clock interrogation lasers and fundamental physics tests.

Abstract:We demonstrate two ultra-stable laser systems at 1064 nm by independently stabilizing two 10-cm-long Fabry-Perot cavities. The reference cavities are on a cubic spacer, which is rigidly mounted for both low sensitivity to environmental vibration and ability for transportation. By comparing against an independent ultra-stable laser at 578 nm via an optical frequency comb, the 1064 nm lasers are measured to have frequency instabilities of 6 x 10(-16) at 1 s averaging time.

Abstract:The frequency stability of a laser locked to an optical reference cavity is fundamentally limited by thermal noise in the cavity length. These fluctuations are linked to material dissipation, which depends both on the temperature of the optical components and the material properties. Here, the design and experimental characterization of a sapphire optical cavity operated at 10 K with crystalline coatings at 1069 nm is presented. Theoretical estimates of the thermo-mechanical noise indicate a thermal noise floor below $\mathrm{4.5\times10^{-18}}$. Major technical noise contributions including vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and residual amplitude modulation are characterized in detail. The short-term performance is measured via a three-cornered hat analysis with two other cavity-stabilized lasers, yielding a noise floor of $1\times10^{-16}$. The long-term performance is measured against an optical lattice clock, indicating cavity stability at the level of $2\times10^{-15}$ for averaging times up to 10,000 s.

Abstract:State-of-the-art optical cavities are pivotal in pushing the envelope of laser frequency stability below 10−16. This is often achieved by extending the cavity length or cooling the system to cryogenic temperatures to reduce the thermal noise floor. In our study, we present a 30-cm-long cavity that operates at room temperature and is outfitted with crystalline coatings. The system has a predicted ultralow thermal noise floor of 4.4 × 10−17, comparable to what is observed in cryogenic silicon cavities. A 1397-nm laser is stabilized in this advanced cavity, and the stable frequency is then transferred to the clock transition in strontium optical lattice clocks via a frequency-doubling process. We have meticulously minimized and assessed the technical noise contributions through comparisons with an ultrastable reference laser that is locked to a commercially available 30-cm cavity. The frequency instability of the system is rigorously evaluated using a three-cornered-hat method. The results demonstrate that the laser frequency instability remains below 2 × 10−16 for averaging times ranging from 1 to 50 s. These findings underscore the significant potential of room-temperature cavities with crystalline coatings in high-precision metrology and pave the way for further improvements in optical lattice clocks.

Abstract:To achieve sub-picometer sensitivities in the millihertz band, laser interferometric inertial sensors rely on some form of reduction of the laser frequency noise, typically by locking the laser to a stable frequency reference, such as the narrow-linewidth resonance of an ultra-stable optical cavity or an atomic or molecular transition. In this paper we report on a compact laser frequency stabilization technique based on an unequal-arm Mach-Zehnder interferometer that is sub-nanometer stable at $10\,\mu$Hz, sub-picometer at $0.5\,$mHz, and reaches a noise floor of $7\,\mathrm{fm}/\!\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz. The interferometer is used in conjunction with a DC servo to stabilize the frequency of a laser down to a fractional instability below $4 \times 10^{-13}$ at averaging times from 0.1 to 100 seconds. The technique offers a wide operating range, does not rely on complex lock acquisition procedures, and can be readily integrated as part of the optical bench in future gravity missions.

Abstract:We unveil a powerful method for stabilization of laser injection locking based on sensing variations in the output beam ellipticity of an optically seeded laser. The effect arises due to an interference between the seeding beam and the injected laser output. We demonstrate the method for a commercial semiconductor laser without the need for any internal changes to the readily-operational injection locked laser system that was utilized. The method can also be used to increase the mode-hop free tuning range of lasers, and has the potential to fill a void in the low-noise laser industry.

Abstract:We study optical cavity locking for laser stabilization through spatial modulation of the phase front of a light beam. A theoretical description of the underlying principle is developed, showing that an error signal similar to the Pound-Drever-Hall one may be created for cavity locking with this method. Residual amplitude modulation (RAM) can be caused by experimental imperfections, especially the manufacture errors of the phase modulators, and we discuss how RAM noises may be suppressed. Although there are technical issues waiting for practical solutions before a mature technology is developed based on the proposed method, it holds great potential for implementation of compact laser stabilization systems locked to Fabry-Pérot cavities without use of expensive bulky devices including signal generators and electro-optic modulators, which will be useful in space-based research missions such as gravitational-wave signals searching and inter-spacecraft laser ranging.

Abstract:Low frequency high precision laser interferometry is subject to excess laser-frequency-noise coupling via arm-length differences which is commonly mitigated by locking the frequency to a stable reference system. This approach is crucial to achieve picometer level sensitivities in the 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz regime, where laser frequency noise is usually high and couples into the measurement phase via arm-length mismatches in the interferometers. Here we describe the results achieved by frequency stabilising an external cavity diode laser to a quasi-monolithic unequal arm-length Mach-Zehnder interferometer read out at mid-fringe via balanced detection. We find this stabilization scheme to be an elegant solution combining a minimal number of optical components, no additional laser modulations and relatively low frequency noise levels. The Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been designed and constructed to minimize the influence of thermal couplings and to reduce undesired stray light using the optical simulation tool ifocad. We achieve frequency-noise levels below 100 Hz/$\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz and are able to demonstrate the LISA frequency prestabilization requirement of 300 Hz/$\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ down to frequencies of 100 mHz by beating the stabilized laser with an iodine-locked reference.

Abstract:Optical resonators are used for the realisation of ultra-stable frequency lasers. The use of high reflectivity multi-band coatings allows the frequency locking of several lasers of different wavelengths to a single cavity. While the noise processes for single wavelength cavities are well known, the correlation caused by multi-stack coatings has as yet not been analysed experimentally. In our work, we stabilise the frequency of a $729\,$nm and a $1069\,$nm laser to one mirror pair and determine the residual-amplitude modulation (RAM) and photo-thermal noise (PTN). We find correlations in PTN between the two lasers and observe coherent cancellation of PTN for the $1069\,$nm coating. We show that the fractional frequency instability of the $729\,$nm laser is limited by RAM at $1\times10^{-14}$. The instability of the $1069\,$nm laser is at $3\times10^{-15}$ close to the thermal noise limit of $1.5\times10^{-15}$.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a technique of making an ultrastable laser referenced to a multi-cavity, corresponding to a lower thermal noise limit due to the larger equivalent beam size. The multi-cavity consists of several pairs of mirrors and a common spacer. We can stabilize the laser frequencies on these cavities, and average the laser frequencies with synthesizing technique. In comparison with a single cavity system, relative frequency instability of the synthesized laser can be improved by a factor of the squire root of the cavity number (n). In addition, we perform an experiment to simulate a two-cavity system. Experimental results show that frequency instability of the synthesized laser is improved by a factor of 1.4, and discrimination of the laser frequency instability, introduced by the process of lasers synthesizing, is negligible, and can reach a floor at low level 10-18 limited by noise of currently used signal generators. This technique is comparable with other techniques; thus, it can gain a factor of the squre root of n on the frequency instability of an ultrastable laser to an unprecedented level.

Abstract:We report the Tilt-Locking (TL) technique applied to lock a laser in pulsed regime to a 28 000 high finesse Fabry–Perot cavity. Preliminary experimental results show that TL technique is comparable with the well-known Pound–Drever–Hall technique. This study is the first to implement the TL technique to lock a pulsed laser to a high-finesse optical cavity. Very high and stable coupling is obtained. The coupling rate is ∼80%, and locking can last for more than 1 h. Furthermore, while previously published papers have focused on near field case, in this study we will give the error signal shape simulation for the far field case. We will show that for different types of error sources, the split photodiode transverse position can be carefully adjusted to obtain a symmetrical error signal. Our experimental results are consistent with the simulations.

Abstract:Cryogenic single-crystal optical cavities have the potential to provide highest dimensional stability. We have investigated the long-term performance of an ultra-stable laser system which is stabilized to a single-crystal silicon cavity operated at 124 K. Utilizing a frequency comb, the laser is compared to a hydrogen maser that is referenced to a primary caesium fountain standard and to the $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ optical lattice clock at PTB. With fractional frequency instabilities of $\sigma_y(\tau)\leq2\times10^{-16}$ for averaging times of $\tau=60\mathrm{~s}$ to $1000\mathrm{~s}$ and $\sigma_y(1 \mathrm{d})\leq 2\times10^{-15}$ the stability of this laser, without any aid from an atomic reference, surpasses the best microwave standards for short averaging times and is competitive with the best hydrogen masers for longer times of one day. The comparison of modeled thermal response of the cavity with measured data indicates a fractional frequency drift below $5\times 10^{-19}/\mathrm{s}$, which we do not expect to be a fundamental limit.

Abstract:An experimental method is developed for the robust frequency stabilization using a high-finesse cavity when the laser exhibits large intermittent frequency jumps. This is accomplished by applying an additional slow feedback signal from Doppler-free fluorescence spectroscopy in an atomic beam with increased frequency locking range. As a result, a stable and narrow-linewidth 556 nm laser maintains the frequency lock status for more than a week, and contributes to more accurate evaluation of the Yb optical lattice clock. In addition, the reference optical cavity is supported at vibration-insensitive points without any vibration isolation table, making the laser setup more simple and compact.

Abstract:We realize a high-stability laser by modulation transfer spectroscopy and apply it to implement a high-performance compact optically pumped cesium beam atomic clock. Evaluated by the optical heterodyne method with two identical frequency-stabilized lasers, the frequency instability of the 852 nm laser directly referenced on thermal atoms is 2.6×10-13 at the averaging time of 5 s. Factors degrading the frequency stability of the laser are analyzed, and we will further control it to reduce the frequency noise of the laser. By comparing with a Hydrogen maser, the measured Allan deviation of the high-stability-laser-based cesium beam atomic clock is 2×10-12/τ, dropping to 1×10-14 in less than half a day of averaging time. To our knowledge, the Allan deviation of our cesium clock is better than that of any reported compact cesium beam atomic clocks at the averaging time of half-day. The high-performance atomic clock can promote the fields in metrology and timekeeping, and the high-stability laser additionally possesses great potential to be a compact optical frequency standard.
Laser Offset Stabilization with Chip-Scale Atomic Diffractive Elements

Abstract:Achieving precise and adjustable control over laser frequency is an essential requirement in numerous applications such as precision spectroscopy, quantum control, and sensing. In many such applications it is desired to stabilize a laser with a variable detuning from an atomic line. In this study, we employ an offset-stabilization scheme by utilizing phase contrast spectroscopy in microfabricated atomic diffractive elements vapor-cells. The spectroscopic response of such a device generates oscillating optical fringes, providing multiple optical frequency stabilization points across a bandwidth of tens of gigahertz, centered around the absorption resonances of Rb. Using this device, we demonstrate laser stabilization at various offset frequencies with instabilities reaching sub-megahertz levels. We further explore the fundamental limitations of our hybrid atomic-photonic device, drawing parallels to birefringent and dichroic spectroscopy apparatuses, which are commonly employed for offset stabilization. Our system showcases a broad offset lock bandwidth, a highly compact footprint, scalability to chip-scale production, and the ability to operate without reliance on magnetic fields. These attributes pave the way for a multitude of applications in quantum technologies.

Abstract:Intracavity frequency-doubled solid-state lasers exhibit intensity fluctuations of their light output, which are cause by nonlinear dynamical processes. Up to now, there are different solutions to this problem, but they reduce the output power, increase the size of the laser and/or make them more complicated to assemble. One focus of current research in nonlinear dynamics is derivation of control strategies from mathematical models and their experimental realization. We suggest a method to stabilize the output power by means of an electronic feedback of the emitted infrared light intensity to the pump power. First we show the theoretical predictions of a recently published stability analysis of a rate equation model with feedback. The presented experimental observation show systematic deviations from theory. This makes it necessary to refine the model to explain the deviations. The refinement has direct impact on the improvement of the feedback loop and, therefore, on the application of such a control scheme.
