Abstract:The recent progress of the authors' group on developing quadratic nonlinear technologies for femtosecond lasers is reviewed. A novel injective femtosecond optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is developed, which can produce tunable femtosecond laser with central wavelength at 1μm, based on the traditional Ti:sapphine laser. A wideband frequency doubling efficiency, as high as 55%, for femtosecond pulsed laser with central wavelength at 1μm is realized, by using the phase matching reentry principle and adopting partially deuterated KDP crystal as the quadratic nonlinear medium. Finally, a time telescope of femtosecond laser with functions of pulse expanding and spectral narrowing is demonstrated.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here, we review the recent progress in fabrication of high-Q microresonators on glass and crystalline substrates by employing femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate the applications of the fabricated microresonators in generating low-threshold lasers, high-sensitivity chemical sensing and nonlinear optical wavelength conversion.

Abstract:Microresonators of ultrahigh quality (Q) factors represent a crucial type of photonic devices aiming at ultra-high spectral resolution, ultra-high sensitivity to the environmental perturbations, and efficient nonlinear wavelength conversions at low threshold pump powers. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microdisks of high Q factors are particularly attractive due to its large second-order nonlinear coefficient and strong electro-optic property. In this letter, we break through the long standing bottleneck in achieving the Q factors of LNOI microresonators beyond 108, which approaches the intrinsic material absorption limit of lithium niobate (LN). The ultra-high Q factors give rise to a rich family of nonlinear optical phenomena from optical parametric oscillation (OPO) to harmonics generation with unprecedented characteristics including ultra-low pump threshold, high wavelength conversion efficiency, and ultra-broad operation bandwidth. Specifically, the threshold of OPO is measured to be only 19.6 μW, and the absolute conversion efficiency observed in the second harmonic generation reaches 23%. The record-breaking performances of the on-chip ultra-high Q LNOI microresonators will have profound implication for both photonic research and industry.

Abstract:We present our latest progresses on the development of integrated photonic devices as well as microfluidic chips of unprecedented characteristics and performances using femtosecond laser micromachining. We demonstrate ultra-high Q microresonators in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), on-chip micro-laser and waveguide amplifier, and high-throughput micro-chemical reactor. The achievements are the result of persistent effort on improving the precision and efficiency in ultrafast laser processing.

Abstract:A nonlinear system capable of expanding pulse with spectral narrowing, an analogy to a spatial beam expander in linear optics, is studied theoretically and experimentally. The system, with features of high efficiency and maintaining near Fourier-transform limit (FTL), is constructed by using quadratic nonlinear processes with chirped pulses. The spectral and temporal characteristics of such a pulse expander are investigated analytically and computationally. It shows that group-velocity mismatch of nonlinear crystal plays a detrimental role, which leads to a deviate operation of pulse expander from its ideal case, e.g., temporal shortening, spectral broadening, and a deviation from the FTL of the expanded pulses. The criteria for designing a near aberration-free pulse expander are given based on these analyses. As a demonstration, we experimentally expand broadband 70-fs pulses from a Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier to narrowband 60-ps longer pulses. The conversion efficiency from pump to idler of the nonlinear pulse expander is currently limited to a few percent and can be practically improved to 10% to 20%.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Pulse compression is a well-established technique for generating optical pulses shorter than those produced directly by lasers or amplifiers. Most commonly, additional bandwidth is generated by self-phase modulation as the pulse propagates nonlinearly in an optical fiber. Compressors based on single-mode fibers are limited to nanojoule pulse energies by higher-order nonlinear effects and ultimately damage to the fiber. Thus, new approaches are needed for compression of the high-energy pulses that are now readily-available from regenerative amplifiers, for example. We describe a new approach to pulse compression based on quadratic nonlinearities. A negative (i.e. self-defocusing) nonlinear phase shift is produced in a phase-mismatched quadratic interaction. Normal dispersion is then required to compress the phase-modulated pulse, and this can be provided by a suitably-chosen piece of transparent material such as glass or sapphire. The use of a self-defocusing nonlinearity eliminates the problems that ordinarily arise from Kerr self-focusing during the propagation of intense pulses in bulk media

Abstract:The generation of a quadratic soliton in a pulse-pumped microresonator has attracted significant interest in recent years. The strong second-order nonlinearity and high peak power of pumps offer a straightforward way to increase efficiency. In this case, the influence of the third-order nonlinearity effect becomes significant and cannot be ignored. In this paper, we study the quadratic soliton in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator driven synchronously by the pulse pump with third-order nonlinearity. Our simulations verify that the robustness of quadratic soliton generation is enhanced when the system experiences a perturbation from pump power, cavity detuning, and pump pulse width. These results represent a new way of manipulating frequency comb in resonant microphotonic structures.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities at the single-photon level are explored in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system, where the cavity frequency is coupled to the square of the mechanical displacement. The effective nonlinear interaction between photons and phonons is enhanced by a strong driving field, which allows one to implement the single-photon nonlinearities even if the single-photon coupling strength g(0) is much lower than the cavity decay rate.. The photon statistical properties are discussed by calculating the second-order correlation function both analytically and numerically. The results show that the single-photon nonlinearities are robust against mechanical thermal noise in the strong-coupling and sideband-resolved regime, and photon blockade and photon-induced tunneling can be realized with experimentally accessible parameters.

Abstract:Useful nonlinear phase shifts can be produced in cascaded quadratic processes. The issues that arise in the extension of cascade nonlinearities to the femtosecond regime are outlined in this paper, and initial applications of the cascade phase shifts to femtosecond pulse generation and propagation are reviewed. The results demonstrate that the cascade phase shifts offer unique properties, and in some cases pulse-shaping techniques based on cascade nonlinearities have potential to offer substantial performance improvements over existing approaches.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:Generation of nonlinear frequency combs in χ(3) optical microresonators has attracted tremendous research interest during the last decade. Recently, realization of the microcomb owing to χ(2) optical nonlinearity in the microresonator promises new breakthroughs and is a big scientific challenge. Moreover, it is of high scientific interest that the presence of both second- and third-order nonlinearities results in complex cavity dynamics. In particular, the role of χ(3) nonlinearity in the generation of the quadratic microcomb is still far from being well understood. Here, we demonstrate the interaction between the second- and third-order nonlinearity in the lithium niobate microresonator, which can provide a new way of phase matching to control the mode-locking condition and pulse number for the quadratic microcomb. Our results verify that the Kerr nonlinearity can benefit the quadratic microcomb. The principle can be further extended to other material platforms to provide more manipulation methods for comb generation based on χ(2) nonlinearity at mid-infrared.

Abstract:The latest development of research on femtosecond nonlinear optics is introduced in this article. Recent progress in ultrafast optics has allowed the generation of ultraintense light pulses comprising merely a few field oscillation cycles. The arising intensity gradient allows electrons to survive in their bound atomic state up to external field strengths many times higher than the binding Coulomb field and gives rise to ionization rates comparable to the light frequency resulting in a significant extension of the frontiers of nonlinear optics and (nonrelativistic) high field physics. Implications include the generation of coherent harmonic radiation up to keV photon energies.

Abstract:Advances in the amplification and manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses has led to revolutions in several areas. Examples include chirped pulse amplification for generating high peak-power lasers, power-scalable amplification techniques, pulse shaping via modulation of spatially-dispersed laser pulses, and efficient frequency-mixing in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals to access new spectral regions. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a new platform for nonlinear optics which has the potential to combine all of these separate functionalities (pulse amplification, frequency transfer, and pulse shaping) into a single monolithic device. Moreover, our approach simultaneously offers solutions to the performance-limiting issues in the conventionally-used techniques, and supports scaling in power and bandwidth of the laser source. The approach is based on two-dimensional patterning of quasi-phase-matching gratings combined with optical parametric interactions involving spatially dispersed laser pulses. Our proof of principle experiment demonstrates this new paradigm via mid-infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplification of few-cycle pulses.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs are one of the most remarkable inventions of the last decades. Originally conceived as the spectral counterpart of the train of short pulses emitted by mode-locked lasers, frequency combs have also been subsequently generated in continuously pumped microresonators, through third-order parametric processes. Quite recently, direct generation of optical frequency combs has been demonstrated in continuous-wave laser-pumped optical resonators with a second-order nonlinear medium inside. Here, we presents a concise introduction to such quadratic combs and the physical mechanism that underlies their formation. We mainly review our recent experimental and theoretical work on formation and dynamics of such quadratic frequency combs. We experimentally demonstrated comb generation in two configurations: a cavity for second harmonic generation, where combs are generated both around the pump frequency and its second harmonic, and a degenerate optical parametric oscillator, where combs are generated around the pump frequency and its sub-harmonic. The experiments have been supported by a thorough theoretical analysis, aimed at modelling the dynamics of quadratic combs, both in frequency and time domains, providing useful insights into the physics of this new class of optical frequency comb synthesizers. Quadratic combs establish a new class of efficient frequency comb synthesizers, with unique features, which could enable straightforward access to new spectral regions and stimulate novel applications.

Abstract:A plethora of applications have recently motivated extensive efforts on the generation of low noise Kerr solitons and coherent frequency combs in various platforms ranging from fiber to whispering gallery and integrated microscale resonators. However, the Kerr (cubic) nonlinearity is inherently weak, and in contrast, strong quadratic nonlinearity in optical resonators is expected to provide an alternative means for soliton formation with promising potential. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a dissipative quadratic soliton via non-stationary optical parametric amplification in the presence of significant temporal walk-off between pump and signal leading to half-harmonic generation accompanied by a substantial pulse compression (exceeding a factor of 40) at low pump pulse energies ($\sim$ 4 picojoules). The bright quadratic soliton forms in a low-finesse cavity in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, which is in stark contrast with bright Kerr solitons. We present a route to significantly improve the performance of the demonstrated quadratic soliton when extended to an integrated nonlinear platform to realize highly-efficient extreme pulse compression leading to the formation of few-cycle soliton pulses starting from ultra-low energy picosecond scale pump pulses that are widely tunable from ultra-violet to mid-infrared spectral regimes.

Abstract:Applications in timekeeping, quantum sensing and quantum computing have sparked growing demand for high-performance photonic integrated circuit (PIC) lasers at visible and short near-infrared wavelengths between 400 nm and 1,000 nm. This Review summarizes the application needs and recent advances in such PIC lasers, focusing on low-noise, continuous-wave operation needed for many quantum technologies. We discuss the building blocks for these laser systems, including the heterogeneous and hybrid integration of gain media, low-loss PICs, external-cavity and self-injection locking schemes, and nonlinear wavelength conversion through optical harmonic generation and optical parametric oscillation processes. We review demonstrations utilizing various combinations of these elements. Finally, we consider current PIC laser performance in the context of a few example quantum technologies that require lasers at multiple wavelengths.

Abstract:We investigate the extreme nonlinear optical properties of quantum system driven by ultrashort laser pulses by solving the one and two dimensional, full‐wave Maxwell‐Bloch coupled equations. We find that the near‐dipole‐dipole (NDD) interactions have a crucial influence on the absolute phase of few‐cycle laser pulses. The difference of the absolute phase between the cases with and without NDD effects can go up to π. Moreover, a novel ultrafast transient population grating induced by a two‐dimensional, ultrashort dipole soliton is demonstrated. The number of lines and the period of the grating can be controlled by the beam waist and the area of the pulse.
