Abstract:In order to predict and assess creep life for plate structures with semi-elliptic surface cracks under high temperature condition, the accurate calculation of the creep fracture mechanics parameter C* is a critical step. In this paper, the effects of crack sizes, plate geometries, and material creep properties on the parameter C* have been investigated under tensile and bending loads by extensive finite element analyses. Based on the results, the creep influence functions Hc for calculating C* values were obtained and fitted into equations for surface cracks in plates under both loads. The equations have been verified by finite element calculations. The C* solutions were obtained through these equations which are suitable for wide ranges of crack sizes, plate geometries, and materials.

Abstract:In the present work, a numerical simulation based on the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) method is conducted to capture the different mechanical responses and damage in different micro areas of the P92 steel welded joint at 650 degrees C. A robust Matlab-Abaqus-Python interactive parameter optimization procedure is proposed to identify the constitutive parameters for heat affected zone (HAZ). Good agreement between experimental and simulated stress-strain curves verifies the accuracy of the present approach. Three fatigue indicator parameters are incorporated into the CPFE to capture the damage distribution under low cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep-fatigue interaction (CFI) loadings. The damage accumulation at grain boundaries is observed in the FE simulation. The damage captured by the simulation under both LCF and CFI loadings shifted from HAZ to base zone.

Abstract:Creep-fatigue and constraint are important factors affecting the fracture behavior and service life of components in high-temperature service. Some researchers have attempted to describe creep-fatigue crack growth (CFCG) behavior using constraint parameters. However, there is still no consensus regarding the effect of the constraint on the CFCG rate, and a correlation between the constraint and the CFCG rate must be established. Thus, in this study, a new CFCG model was developed and verified by finite element simulations and experiments. Then, the CFCG behavior for single edge-notched tensile (SENT), centre-cracked tension (CCT), and compact tension (CT) specimens under different constraint conditions was studied using the new model to reveal the effect of constraint on the CFCG rate. The relationship between the dwell time and the CFCG rate was also studied. Moreover, a linear correlation between the CFCG rate and the constraint was established for the first time using the unified constraint parameter Ap, and it is shown that the CFCG rate has a strong correlation with the area surrounded by the equivalent plastic strain (εp) contour at the crack tip. This indicates that the constraint effect on the creep-fatigue could be further revealed by Ap. Furthermore, Ap was extended from monotonic loading to creep-fatigue loading, and a method is provided for using CFCG test data to evaluate high-temperature components with defects.

Towards Fully Automatic Modelling of the Fracture Process in Quasi-Brittle and Ductile Materials: a Unified Crack Growth Criterion

Abstract:Fully automatic finite element (FE) modelling of the fracture process in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and rocks and ductile materials such as metals and alloys, is of great significance in assessing structural integrity and presents tremendous challenges to the engineering community. One challenge lies in the adoption of an objective and effective crack propagation criterion. This paper proposes a crack propagation criterion based on the principle of energy conservation and the cohesive zone model (CZM). The virtual crack extension technique is used to calculate the differential terms in the criterion. A fully-automatic discrete crack modelling methodology, integrating the developed criterion, the CZM to model the crack, a simple remeshing procedure to accommodate crack propagation, the J2 flow theory implemented within the incremental plasticity framework to model the ductile materials, and a local arc-length solver to the nonlinear equation system, is developed and implemented in an in-house program. Three examples, i.e., a plain concrete beam with a single shear crack, a reinforced concrete (RC) beam with multiple cracks and a compact-tension steel specimen, are simulated. Good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental data is found, which demonstrates the applicability of the criterion to both quasi-brittle and ductile materials.

Abstract:The mechanical behaviour of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) connections under axial tension, eccentric tension and in-plane bending is extensively studied by the experimentally validated finite element analysis (FEA) in this paper. A total of 336 connections with a wide range of parameters on geometrical configurations, material properties and load positions was conducted to investigate (a) the general applicability of the experimental conclusion for the governing limit state, (b) the shear stress profile on the failure face and (c) the design equations based on fracture analytical models under various loading conditions. FEA extended the validity of experimental conclusion that the only governing limit state was punching shear failure instead of the deformation limit of 3% chord diameter (D). With an aim of proposing design equations based on ductile fracture mechanics, the stress distributions on the fracture failure face and the inner concrete were investigated by the parametric study, and then were adopted in the analytical models. Finally, design equations based on semi-theoretical models for the ultimate strength of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled CHS connections under three investigated loads were proposed. It is found the connection-capacity predictions agreed with both test and FEA results well.

Abstract:Fatigue limit load is one of the most important and concerned factors in designing and manufacturing critical mechanical parts such as the crankshafts. Usually, this governing parameter is obtained by experiment, which is expensive, time-consuming and only feasible in analyzing the case of simple structure. Still, there's a big obstacle to clear to get the fatigue limit load of a sophisticated structure effectively and efficiently. Based on the theory of multi-axial fatigue and critical distance, this paper first analyzes the stress state of the crankshaft under a bending moment by a coordinate transform method. Then, suitable fatigue criterions and stress distribution are chosen to determine the fatigue limit value. Also, the experiment is conducted to verify the prediction result. As the simulation results through the critical line method show a better consistency with the experiment data, the effectiveness of the critical line method make it more recommendable to be put into engineering practice than the critical point method in predicting the fatigue limit. The conclusion in this paper may enlighten the understanding of the fracture behavior of a complex structure and provide a valuable reference for fatigue limit prediction in engineering application.

Abstract:Using load-independent creep constraint parameters Q* and Qm* , the variations of crack front stress field and constraint level are analyzed for various crack sizes of pipelines containing internal surface cracks under high temperature conditions. The results show that the trends of stress changes in the axial and circumferential internal surface crack front for different crack sizes are similar. For axial internal surface cracks, when the crack depth to length ratio a/c is the same, the maximum values of crack front Q* and Qm* are shifted from the deepest part of the crack (2 Φ/π = 1) to the vicinity of the free surface (2 Φ/π = 0.2) as the crack depth a/t increases. As for the circumferential inner surface cracks, when the crack depth a/t exceeds 0.2, the locations where the maximum values of crack fronts Q* and Qm* appear are mainly concentrated in the deepest part of the crack (2 Φ/π = 1). Based on the calculation results of the constraint parameters, the empirical formulas for the engineering calculation of the relationship between the average constraint parameters ( Qavg* and Qm‐avg* ) and the crack size are obtained by fitting.

3D front tip fields in creeping solids under constraint effects: a higher-order asymptotic solution

Abstract:As one of the most important topics studied in creep fracture mechanics, mechanics fields at three-dimensional (3D) sharp V-notches and crack tip have drawn tremendous attentions. With many years efforts on constraint theory developed in creeping solids, there still seems dense fog on how in-plane and out-of-plane constraint effects are interacted for 3D sharp V-notch and crack in creeping solids. To shed lights on this topic, a 3D higher-order termed solution for sharp V-notches in creeping materials subjected to mode 1 loading is established by introducing the out-of-plane factor, which is the out-of-plane stress divided by the sum of in-plane normal stress. The solution can naturally be degenerated to a 3D crack. Based on the 3D higher-order term solution, a new fracture parameter is proposed and combined with to characterize 3D constraint effect. It is found that the stress exponents and angular distribution of higher-order term for 3D notches and cracks are highly related to . The proposed higher order termed solutions show better agreement with the FEA results than the 3D leading-term and 2D two-term solutions, especially for smaller notch angles and ligament width. Moreover, the presented 3D constraint theory shows that effects of and are highly interlinked rather than simply separated. It implies that the 3D constraint level may be significantly influenced by . The 3D mathematical solutions discussed in this paper could enhance the understanding of the 3D effect and has the potential to explain the 3D constraint effect on the notches and cracks under creep conditions.

Abstract:The crack tip constraint effect should be considered in the fracture assessment of structures with cracks, and the in-plane constraint and out-of-plane constraint should be illustrated simultaneously for the three-dimensional cracks in practical engineering structures. The constraint effect of central cracked plate (CCP) specimens with I-II mixed mode crack under uniaxial compression has been investigated quantitatively in present work. The relationship between T-stress components (Tx, Ty, Txy) and in-plane constraint parameter T11 has been established. The effects of a wide range of in-plane and out-of-plane geometrical configurations (including relative crack length a/W and thickness to width ratio t/W), material parameters (including elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio ν), crack inclination angle β and friction coefficient μ corresponding to stress intensity factors (K), in-plane constraint parameter T11 and out-of-plane constraint parameters T33 and Tz at the crack tip have been calculated and discussed theoretically and numerically. It demonstrates that the constraint parameters can effectively express the stress-strain field at the crack tip. The relative crack length a/W has an influence on the in-plane and out-of-plane constraint parameters, and the thickness to width ratio t/W mainly affects the out-of-plane constraint parameters T33 and Tz. The out-of-plane constraint parameters should be considered for long cracks. There is a loss of out-of-plane constraint under compression when t/W less than or equal to 0.9, which can be much more directly and evidently investigated through the analysis of Tz than T33. The empirical equations for KII, T11 and Tz have been obtained according to theoretical analysis and simulation results, which are convenient and effective for application.

Abstract:In recent years, fiber reinforced concrete (FRC), which is produced by adding strengthening intensifier such as steel fiber, synthetic fiber into plain concrete, so as to improve the tensile and bending strengths of concrete effectively, has been applied more and more in the production of the thick wall cylinder. Since Mohr-Coulomb criterion, Tresca or Mises criterions are all only applicable to materials having equal tensile and compressive strength, these criterions are not applicable to FRC. In this paper, based on the discussion of the softening characteristic of FRC and the unified strength theory (YU Mao Hong and HE Li Nan, 1991), which can take the intermediate principle stress and the softening characteristic of material strain into consideration, the uniform strength principle which is applicable to strain softening material was derived. In addition, the stress characteristic of thick wall cylinder made of FRC was analyzed, and its unified solutions of the elastic and plastic limit loads were derived. The solution could be more practical to the calculation of the limit compression loads of materials with different tensile and compression strength and the thick wall cylinder made of different FRC by taking into account of both the materials' strain softening and the intermediate principal stress.
Evolution of a crack embedded in an elastic-plastic plate

Abstract:Three-dimensional computation was carried out on the evolution of a crack embedded in an elastic-plastic metal plate. An increased type constitutive relation was adopted to describe elastic-plastic material, and the governing equation in Lagrangian form was solved with the finite element method (FEM). The computed elastic and plastic waves propagating in the bar are in good agreement with analytical solutions, validating the methods and codes. Employing criteria used in LS-DYNA software to tell the failure element, propagation of a vertical crack embedded in a plate was computed, too. Von Mises stress contours at different time demonstrated the crack evolution. Under the shock loading, stress waves were formed and propagated inwards from the plate edge. The stress waves reflected on the crack surface and deformed. The stress concentrated on the sharp corners of the crack and caused the crack to expand further. As far as the crack length was twice its initial length, the crack started to bifurcate till it arrived at the plate edge. The crack evolution is in good agreement with theoretical estimation.

Abstract:Potential novel singular solutions to the crack-tip stress fields beyond the asymptotic solution frame are discussed in this study. It is believed that one of them is not only suitable for the crack-tip stress fields of mode-I cracked specimens but also for those of mode-II cracked specimens. The crack-tip stress fields of mode-II cracked specimens are investigated based on the singular solution and the stress factor of mode-II cracked specimen derived from energy density equivalence principle. Further, special functions for describing the coefficients of normalized stress distributions of mode-II cracked specimens are proposed. The method to determine the parameters in the theoretical solutions are introduced. To give an example, one set of parameters for compact shear specimen under plane-strain conditions are determined by the finite element analysis of a few typical materials and geometries conditions. Finally, comparisons of radial and circumferential stress distributions and contour lines of equivalent stress are completed for the compact shear specimens and Arcan-shaped shear specimens of power-law plastic materials under plane-strain and plane-stress conditions. And the results show that the applicability and reliability of the proposed unified theoretical solutions are verified.

Abstract:An improved unified method is proposed to calculate the relations of stress to axial, lateral, and volumetric strains, involving the short-term progressive failure and long-term creep of brittle rocks. In the present paper, wing crack model, subcritical crack growth law and a crack-strain criterion for brittle rocks are coupled to formulate the frame of the proposed method. The limitation of the crack growth at crack coalescence is discussed as well, and the effects of confining pressure on relations between axial, lateral and volumetric strains and axial stress during progressive failure are analyzed, then the corresponding stress-strain curve during multi-loading creep is obtained. These theoretical derivations and calculation agree well with the previous experimental results, the proposed unified method is validated and can be applied into calculate brittle rocks deformation induced by crack growth.

Abstract:Understanding the repeated kinking pattern of cracks is essential for controlling the complex fracture trajectories in multilayered composites. While previous studies have explored many aspects of fractures in layered materials, the conditions governing the repeated kinking behavior under basic loading modes remain largely unrevealed. This research elucidates the continual kinking condition for a central crack in a brittle, multilayered plate with closely-parallel weak interfaces under remote shear stresses. Using the strain energy release rate (SERR) ratio criterion, we analytically derived a closed-form solution to the condition through the equivalent crack concept. The solution specifies a value domain for the intersection angle and fracture toughness ratio of weak interfaces, where the load-guided direction competes closely with the weak interface-guided direction to shape the crack trajectory into a repeated kinking pattern. Our theoretical results, validated by a series of finite element (FE) simulations, clarify how closely-parallel weak interfaces induce repeated crack kinking in multilayered materials under remote shear loading. This research paves the way for the deeper understanding of intricate crack trajectories under mixed loads in various practical applications.

Abstract:Mode I crack initiation and growth under plane strain conditions in tough metals is computed using an elastic-plastic continuum model which accounts for void growth and coalescence ahead of the crack tip. The material parameters are the Young's modulus, yield stress and strain hardening exponent of the metal, along with the parameters characterizing the spacing and volume fraction of voids in material elements lying in the plane of the crack. For a given set of these parameters and a specific specimen, or component, subject to a specific loading, relationships among load, load-line displacement and crack advance can be computed with no restrictions on the extent of plastic deformation. Similarly, there is no limit on crack advance, except that it must take place on the symmetry plane ahead of the initial crack. Suitably defined measures of crack tip loading intensity, such as those based on the J-integral, can also be computed, thereby directly generating crack growth resistance curves. In this paper, the model is applied to five specimen geometries which are known to give rise to significantly different crack tip constraints and crack growth resistance behaviors. Computed results are compared with sets of experimental data for two tough steels for four of the specimen types. Details of the load, displacement and crack growth histories are accurately reproduced, even when extensive crack growth takes place under conditions of fully plastic yielding.

Abstract:Exploring new analytic buckling solutions of cracked plates is of much importance for providing benchmark results and implementing preliminary structural designs based on explicit parametric analysis and optimization. However, the governing higher-order partial differential equations as well as the geometric discontinuity across a crack essentially complicate the problems, make it more intractable to seeking analytic solutions. This paper presents a first attempt to extend an up-to-date symplectic superposition method to linear buckling of side-cracked rectangular thin plates. The problems are introduced into the Hamiltonian system, and a side-cracked plate is then divided into several sub-plates that are analytically solved by the symplectic superposition method, where the symplectic eigenvalue problems are formulated, followed by the symplectic eigen expansion. Some elaborated mechanical quantities are imposed on the edges of each sub-plate, with multiple sets of constants determined by the actual boundary conditions of the cracked plate, free edge conditions along the crack, and interfacial continuity conditions among the sub-plates. The final analytic solution of a side-cracked plate is obtained by integration of the solutions of the sub-plates. Comprehensive benchmark results are tabulated and plotted for buckling loads and mode shapes of typical plates with a side crack from a simply supported edge, a clamped edge, or a free edge. The crack length effect is also investigated by the analytic solutions obtained. Due to the rigorous mathematical derivations without predetermination of solution forms, the present method provides a rational approach to exploring more analytic solutions.

Abstract:In this study, a new creep constraint parameter As of brazed joint was proposed based on existing constraint parameters R* and Ac. The proposed parameter As is superior than R* and Ac because the constraint parameter As is not affected by the selection of creep steady time and distance from crack tip. And the load independence of constraint parameter As for different constraint levels are all superior than that of parameter R* and Ac. Based on the relationships between creep crack growth (CCG) rate and constraint parameter predicted by single-material method, the superiority to characterize constraint effect of constraint parameter As is clarified. The CCG rate equation dependent constraint of brazed joints is established based on the defined parameter. The CCG data predicted by established constraint dependent CCG rate equation have a good accordance with experiment. The established CCG rate equation dependent constraint can predict the CCG rate at different constraint levels very well.

Abstract:A crack terminating at an arbitrary angle to the interface between two neo-Hookean sheets is investigated under plane stress conditions using finite deformation theory. The asymptotic crack-tip deformation and stress fields are analyzed as a function of the ratio of the moduli and the angle of the crack relative to the interface. Full-held numerical calculations and experimental studies validate the analytical results. A stretch-based crack growth criterion is developed using crack-tip held solutions. Such criterion can predict the delay of crack growth through the bi-material interface observed in experiments and can be extended to any heterogeneity and material.

The present 3D higher-order asymptotic solution can promote the understanding and characterization of 3D constraint effect and is of great significance in the evaluation of 3D fracture behavior and structural failure assessment under creep conditions.

Abstract:The existence of multiple surface cracks is a common problem in brittle materials under thermal shock loadings.Such structures have suffered sudden partial or total failure.The interaction of multiple surface cracks may affect the life-span of mechanical structures.In this paper,the thermal stress problem of an infinite plate of finite thickness containing multiple centrosymmetric semi-circular surface cracks normal to its face is investigated.The problem is resolved by using the superposition technique.The thermal stresses in the plate without the cracks are evaluated analytically.The perturbation problem for the cracked plate is modeled with the crack face tractions so as to negate the afore-mentioned thermo-elastic stresses through finite element method.Stress intensity factors of different crack configurations are obtained and illustrated.
