Abstract:Superalloy XH 62(Ni-Cr-Mo-Fe-Al) is studied for its high-temperature behavior under compressive and tensile mode of deformation at elevated temperatures. Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator has been employed to carry out both the tests. The compressive tests have been carried out in the temperature regime of 1273–1473 K and strain rate ranges of 0.001–10 s −1 . Material constants have been determined using stress–strain data from compressive tests using which the constitutive equation was formulated and compared with the experimental stresses. Processing maps were constructed, and safe deformation zones were identified. The alloy is found to have good workability in entire test temperature regime of 1273–1473 K at lower strain rates of 0.001–0.01 s −1 . Isolated zones of instability mainly at higher strain rates are observed in processing map. Cyclic strain rate jump test (CSRJT) was carried out, and strain rate sensitivity was found to be 0.199. Activation energy was estimated to be 745 kJ through jump temperature test (JTT). The values of these two parameters match closely with those obtained through the tests carried out through constant strain rate (CSRT). Dynamic recrystallization is found to be the prime reason for flow softening. Further, material was tested under tension at selected temperatures and strain rates to understand the difference in flow behavior and microstructural evolution with change in nature of loading. It is noted that yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of material decreases with rise in test temperature with improvement in percentage elongation of material. Microstructural evolution is found to be similar in compression and tensile loading.
