Current Sheets from Ulysses Observation

Abstract:Current sheet is a significant source of solar wind MHD turbulence intermittency. It has long been recognized that these structures can arise from non-linear interactions of MHD turbulence. Alternatively, they may also be relic structures in the solar wind that have a solar origin, e.g., magnetic walls of flux tubes that separate solar wind plasma into distinct parcels. Identifying these structures in the solar wind is crucial to understanding the properties of the solar wind MHD turbulence. Using Ulysses observations we examine 3-year worth of solar wind magnetic field data when the Ulysses is at low latitude during solar minimum. Extending the previous work of Li (2007, 2008), we develop an automatic data analysis method of current sheet identification. Using this method, we identify more than 28000 current sheets. Various properties of the current sheet are obtained. These include the distributions of the deflection angle across the current sheet, the thickness of the current sheet and the waiting time statistics between current sheets.

Abstract:A puzzling observation of solar wind MHD turbulence is the often seen Kolmogorov scaling of k(-5/3), even though the solar wind MHD turbulence is dominated by Alfvenic fluctuations. Recently Li et al. (2011) proposed that the presence of current sheets may be the cause of the Kolmogorov scaling. Here, using a cell model of the solar wind we examine the effect of current sheets on the power spectrum of the solar wind magnetic field. We model the solar wind as multiple cells separated by current sheets. We prescribe the spectra of turbulent magnetic field in individual cells as 1K-like and examine the spectra along trajectories that cross multiple boundaries. We find that these spectra become softer and are consistent with the Kolmogorov-scaling. Our finding supports our recent proposal of Li et al. (2011). (C) 2012 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Kinetic Scale Slow Solar Wind Turbulence in the Inner Heliosphere: Co-existence of Kinetic Alfvén Waves and Alfvén Ion Cyclotron Waves

Abstract:The nature of the plasma wave modes around the ion kinetic scales in highly Alfvénic slow solar wind turbulence is investigated using data from the NASA’s Parker Solar Probe taken in the inner heliosphere, at 0.18 au from the Sun. The joint distribution of the normalized reduced magnetic helicity σm (θRB, τ) is obtained, where θRB is the angle between the local mean magnetic field and the radial direction and τ is the temporal scale. Two populations around ion scales are identified: the first population has σm (θRB, τ) < 0 for frequencies (in the spacecraft frame) ranging from 2.1 to 26 Hz for 60° < θRB < 130°, corresponding to kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs), and the second population has σm (θRB, τ) > 0 in the frequency range [1.4, 4.9] Hz for θRB > 150°, corresponding to Alfvén ion cyclotron waves (ACWs). This demonstrates for the first time the coexistence of KAWs and ACWs in the slow solar wind in the inner heliosphere, which contrasts with previous observations in the slow solar wind at 1 au. This discrepancy between 0.18 and 1 au could be explained either by (i) a dissipation of ACWs via cyclotron resonance during their outward journey, or by (ii) the high Alfvénicity of the slow solar wind at 0.18 au that may be favorable for the excitation of ACWs.
A Solar Wind Model with Current Sheets

Abstract:Current sheets are common structures in the solar wind and are a significant source of solar wind MHD turbulence intermittency. They can arise from non-linear interactions of MHD turbulence or be relic structures in the solar wind that having a solar origin. Observations show that magnetic field directions often change abruptly upon crossing these structures. The presence of these structures can affect the transport of solar energetic particles. To understand the effects of these current sheet a realistic solar wind model that includes them is necessary. In this work, we construct a realistic solar wind model that explicitly includes current sheets. In our model, the solar wind is composed of individual cells with varying local uniform mean magnetic fields. The size of the individual cells are adjusted to agree with in-situ observations at 1 AU. The turbulence in each cell is modeled by either a slab and/or 2D turbulence.
Embedded coherent structures from MHD to sub-ion scales in turbulent solar wind at 0.17 au

Abstract:We study intermittent coherent structures in solar wind magnetic turbulence from MHD to kinetic plasma scales using Parker Solar Probe data during its first perihelion (at 0.17 au), when the satellite was in the Alfvénic slow wind of 340 km/s. The coherent structures are energetic events localized in time and covering wide range of scales. We detect them using Morlet wavelets. For the first time, we apply a multi-scale analyses in physical space to study these structures. At MHD scales within the inertial range, times scales $\tau \in (1, 10^{2} )$ s, we find (i) current sheets including switchback boundaries and (ii) Alfvén vortices. Within these events, there are embedded structures at smaller scales: typically Alfvén vortices at ion scales, $\tau \in (0.08, 1)$ s, and a compressible vortices at sub-ion scales, $\tau \in (8,80)$ ms. The number of coherent structures grows toward smaller scales: we observe about $\sim 200$ events during 5 h time interval at MHD scales, $\sim 10^{3}$ events ai ion scales and $\sim 10^{4}$ events at sub-ion scales. In general, there are multiple structures of ion and sub-ion scales embedded within one MHD structure. There are also examples of ion and sub-ion scales structures outside of MHD structures. To quantify the relative importance of different type of structures, we do a statistical comparison of the observed structures with the expectations of models of the current sheets and vortices. This comparison is based on amplitude anisotropy of magnetic fluctuations within the structures. The results show the dominance of Alfvén vortices at all scales in contrast to the widespread view of dominance of current sheets. This means that Alfvén vortices are important building blocs of solar wind turbulence.

Abstract:The MHD turbulence theory developed by Iroshnikov and Kraichnan predicts a k(-1.5) power spectrum. Solar wind observations, however, often show a k(-5/3) Kolmogorov scaling. Based on 3 years worth of Ulysses magnetic field data where over 28 000 current sheets are identified, we propose that the current sheet is the cause of the Kolmogorov scaling. We show that for 5 longest current-sheet-free periods the magnetic field power spectra are all described by the Iroshnikov-Kraichnan scaling. In comparison, for 5 periods that have the most number of current sheets, the power spectra all exhibit Kolmogorov scaling. The implication of our results is discussed.

Abstract:Our understanding of processes occurring in the heliosphere historically began with reduced dimensionality - one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) sketches and models, which aimed to illustrate views on large-scale structures in the solar wind. However, any reduced dimensionality vision of the heliosphere limits the possible interpretations of in-situ observations. Accounting for non-planar structures, e.g. current sheets, magnetic islands, flux ropes as well as plasma bubbles, is decisive to shed the light on a variety of phenomena, such as particle acceleration and energy dissipation. In part I of this review, we have described in detail the ubiquitous and multi-scale observations of these magnetic structures in the solar wind and their significance for the acceleration of charged particles. Here, in part II, we elucidate existing theoretical paradigms of the structure of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field, with particular attention to the fine structure and stability of current sheets. Differences in 2D and 3D views of processes associated with current sheets, magnetic islands and flux ropes are discussed. We finally review the results of numerical simulations and in-situ observations, pointing out the complex nature of magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in a strongly turbulent environment.

Abstract:Several long-standing theories postulate that turbulent dissipation can heat solar wind protons in situ. Turbulent dissipation can occur via current sheets, which are small-scale structures embedded in the solar wind magnetic field. This study examines the role that switchbacks—intermediate-scale reversals in the interplanetary magnetic field—may play in heating the solar wind by generating current sheets. We explore this possible relationship by analyzing the characteristics of current sheets within and around switchback regions. Previous studies investigated current sheet properties during Parker Solar Probe's first solar encounter, analyzed current sheets using a wide range of statistics, and explored trends that switchbacks follow with radial distance from the Sun. The present study builds on these works by analyzing the distribution and maximum values of solar wind current sheets using the Partial Variance of Increments method and focusing on how these properties correlate with the presence of switchbacks to better understand how switchbacks contribute to current sheet activity. We conclude that there are no increased current sheet populations observed within and around switchbacks, with most current sheets being observed outside switchbacks. We find a consistent distribution of current sheets regardless of whether there is concurrent switchback activity. We also observe that current sheets follow a uniform occurrence rate with increased distance from the Sun, while switchback regions significantly evolve with larger radial distances. Our findings suggest that local turbulence may be responsible for generating solar wind current sheets and does so with the same efficiency inside and outside of switchback regions.

Abstract:The prediction of a supersonic solar wind<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR1">1</a> was first confirmed by spacecraft near Earth<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR3">3</a> and later by spacecraft at heliocentric distances as small as 62 solar radii<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR4">4</a>. These missions showed that plasma accelerates as it emerges from the corona, aided by unidentified processes that transport energy outwards from the Sun before depositing it in the wind. Alfvénic fluctuations are a promising candidate for such a process because they are seen in the corona and solar wind and contain considerable energy<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR7">7</a>. Magnetic tension forces the corona to co-rotate with the Sun, but any residual rotation far from the Sun reported until now has been much smaller than the amplitude of waves and deflections from interacting wind streams<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR8">8</a>. Here we report observations of solar-wind plasma at heliocentric distances of about 35 solar radii<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR11">11</a>, well within the distance at which stream interactions become important. We find that Alfvén waves organize into structured velocity spikes with duration of up to minutes, which are associated with propagating S-like bends in the magnetic-field lines. We detect an increasing rotational component to the flow velocity of the solar wind around the Sun, peaking at 35 to 50 kilometres per second—considerably above the amplitude of the waves. These flows exceed classical velocity predictions of a few kilometres per second, challenging models of circulation in the corona and calling into question our understanding of how stars lose angular momentum and spin down as they age<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1813-z#ref-CR14">14</a>.

A Closer Look at Small-Scale Magnetic Flux Ropes in the Solar Wind at 1 AU: Results from Improved Automated Detection

Abstract:Small-scale interplanetary magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs) are similar to ICMEs in magnetic structure, but are smaller and do not exhibit ICME plasma signatures. We present a computationally efficient and GPU-powered version of the single-spacecraft automated SMFR detection algorithm based on the Grad-Shafranov (GS) technique. Our algorithm is capable of processing higher resolution data, eliminates selection bias caused by a fixed $\avg{B}$ threshold, has improved detection criteria demonstrated to have better results on an MHD simulation, and recovers full 2.5D cross sections using GS reconstruction. We used it to detect 512,152 SMFRs from 27 years (1996 to 2022) of 3-second cadence \emph{Wind} measurements. Our novel findings are: (1) the radial density of SMFRs at 1 au (${\sim}1$ per $\si{10^6\kilo\meter}$) and filling factor (${\sim}$35\%) are independent of solar activity, distance to the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), and solar wind plasma type, although the minority of SMFRs with diameters greater than ${\sim}$0.01 au have a strong solar activity dependence; (2) SMFR diameters follow a log-normal distribution that peaks below the resolved range ($\gtrsim 10^4$ km), although the filling factor is dominated by SMFRs between $10^5$ to $10^6$ km; (3) most SMFRs at 1 au have strong field-aligned flows like those from PSP measurements; (4) in terms of diameter $d$, SMFR poloidal flux $\propto d^{1.2}$, axial flux $\propto d^{2.0}$, average twist number $\propto d^{-0.8}$, current density $\propto d^{-0.8}$, and helicity $\propto d^{3.2}$. Implications for the origin of SMFRs and switchbacks are briefly discussed. The new algorithm and SMFR dataset are made freely available.

Abstract:We present the analysis of 2,033 current sheets (CS) observed aboard four Cluster spacecraft in a pristine solar wind. Four-spacecraft estimates of the CS normal and propagation velocity are compared with different single-spacecraft estimates. The Minimum Variance Analysis (MVA) of the magnetic field is shown to be highly inaccurate in estimating the normal. The MVA normal often differs by more than 60 degrees from the normal obtained by multi-spacecraft timing method, likely due to ambient turbulent fluctuations. In contrast, the cross-product of magnetic fields at the CS boundaries delivers the normal with the uncertainty of less than 15 degrees at the confidence level of 90%. The CSs are essentially frozen into plasma flow, since their propagation velocity is consistent with local ion flow velocity within 20% at the confidence level of 90%. The single-spacecraft methodology based on the cross-product method and frozen-in assumption delivers the CS thickness and current density amplitude within 20% of their actual values at the confidence level of 90%. The CSs are kinetic-scale structures with half-thickness $\lambda$ from a few tenths to tens of local proton inertial length $\lambda_{p}$ and scale-dependent shear angle and current density amplitude, $\Delta \theta \propto (\lambda/\lambda_p)^{0.5}$ and $J_0\propto (\lambda/\lambda_{p})^{-0.5}$. The classification of the CSs in terms of tangential and rotational discontinuities remains a challenge, because even the four-spacecraft normal has too large uncertainties to reveal the actual normal magnetic field component. The presented results will be valuable for the analysis of solar wind CSs, when only single-spacecraft measurements are available.

Abstract:Space plasma turbulence is inherently characterized by anisotropic fluctuations. The generalized k-th order correlation tensor of magnetic field increments allow us to separate the mixed isotropic and anisotropic structure functions from the purely anisotropic ones. In this work, we quantified the relative importance of anisotropic fluctuations in solar wind turbulence using two Alfvénic data samples gathered by the Solar Orbiter at 0.8 astronomical units. The results based on the joined statistics suggest that the anisotropic fluctuations are ubiquitous in solar wind turbulence and persist at kinetic scales. Using the RTN coordinate system, we show that their presence depends on the anisotropic sector under consideration, e.g., the RN and RT sectors exhibit enhanced anisotropy toward kinetic scales, in contrast with the TN. We then study magnetic field fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to the local mean magnetic field separately. We find that perpendicular fluctuations are representative of the global statistics, resembling the typical picture of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, whereas parallel fluctuations exhibit a scaling law with slope ∼1 for all the joined isotropic and anisotropic components. These results are in agreement with predictions based on the critical balance phenomenology. This topic is potentially of interest for future space missions measuring kinetic and MHD scales simultaneously in a multi-spacecraft configuration.

Kinetic equilibrium of two-dimensional force-free current sheets

Abstract:Force-free current sheets are local plasma structures with field-aligned electric currents and approximately uniform plasma pressures. Such structures, widely found throughout the heliosphere, are sites for plasma instabilities and magnetic reconnection, the growth rate of which is controlled by the structure's current sheet configuration. Despite the fact that many kinetic equilibrium models have been developed for one-dimensional (1D) force-free current sheets, their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, which have a magnetic field component normal to the current sheets, have not received sufficient attention to date. Here, using particle-in-cell simulations, we search for such 2D force-free current sheets through relaxation from an initial, magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium. Kinetic equilibria are established toward the end of our simulations, thus demonstrating the existence of kinetic force-free current sheets. Although the system currents in the late equilibrium state remain field aligned as in the initial configuration, the velocity distribution functions of both ions and electrons systematically evolve from their initial drifting Maxwellians to their final time-stationary Vlasov state. The existence of 2D force-free current sheets at kinetic equilibrium necessitates future work in discovering additional integrals of motion of the system, constructing the kinetic distribution functions, and eventually investigating their stability properties.

Abstract: The anisotropy of solar wind turbulence is a critical issue in understanding the physics of energy transfer between scales and energy conversion between fields and particles in the heliosphere. Using the measurement of \emph{Parker Solar Probe} (\emph{PSP}), we present an observation of the anisotropy at kinetic scales in the slow, Alfv\'enic, solar wind in the inner heliosphere. A steepened transition range is found between the inertial and kinetic ranges at all the directions with respect to the local background magnetic field direction. The anisotropy of $k_\perp \gg k_\parallel$ is found evident in both transition and kinetic ranges, with the power anisotropy $P_\perp/P_\parallel > 10$ in the kinetic range leading over that in the transition range and being stronger than that at 1 au. The spectral index varies from $\alpha_{t\parallel}=-5.7\pm 1.3$ to $\alpha_{t\perp}=-3.7\pm 0.3$ in the transition range and $\alpha_{k\parallel}=-2.9\pm 0.2$ to $\alpha_{k\perp}=-2.57\pm 0.07$ in the kinetic range. The corresponding wavevector anisotropy has the scaling of $k_\parallel \sim k_\perp^{2/3}$ in the transition range, and changes to $k_\parallel \sim k_\perp^{1/3}$ in the kinetic range, consistent with the kinetic Alfv\'enic turbulence at sub-ion scales.

Abstract:Venus Express interplanetary magnetic field measurements have been examined for magnetic "holes," accompanied by magnetic field directional changes. We examine both the thickness of the current sheet and the depth of the magnetic field depression. We find the thickness of the current sheet is not correlated with the depth of the field depression. The depth of the magnetic holes is related to directional angle change. Since total pressure should balance across these discontinuities, there must be enhanced plasma pressure within the magnetic holes. The dependence of the depth of the hole (i.e., size of the plasma pressure enhancement) on the directional changes suggests that the heating of the plasma associated with the hole formation may be provided by annihilation of the magnetic energy in the current sheet, via slow reconnection.
