Abstract:We present the analysis of 2,033 current sheets (CS) observed aboard four Cluster spacecraft in a pristine solar wind. Four-spacecraft estimates of the CS normal and propagation velocity are compared with different single-spacecraft estimates. The Minimum Variance Analysis (MVA) of the magnetic field is shown to be highly inaccurate in estimating the normal. The MVA normal often differs by more than 60 degrees from the normal obtained by multi-spacecraft timing method, likely due to ambient turbulent fluctuations. In contrast, the cross-product of magnetic fields at the CS boundaries delivers the normal with the uncertainty of less than 15 degrees at the confidence level of 90%. The CSs are essentially frozen into plasma flow, since their propagation velocity is consistent with local ion flow velocity within 20% at the confidence level of 90%. The single-spacecraft methodology based on the cross-product method and frozen-in assumption delivers the CS thickness and current density amplitude within 20% of their actual values at the confidence level of 90%. The CSs are kinetic-scale structures with half-thickness $\lambda$ from a few tenths to tens of local proton inertial length $\lambda_{p}$ and scale-dependent shear angle and current density amplitude, $\Delta \theta \propto (\lambda/\lambda_p)^{0.5}$ and $J_0\propto (\lambda/\lambda_{p})^{-0.5}$. The classification of the CSs in terms of tangential and rotational discontinuities remains a challenge, because even the four-spacecraft normal has too large uncertainties to reveal the actual normal magnetic field component. The presented results will be valuable for the analysis of solar wind CSs, when only single-spacecraft measurements are available.

Abstract:Current sheet is a significant source of solar wind MHD turbulence intermittency. It has long been recognized that these structures can arise from non-linear interactions of MHD turbulence. Alternatively, they may also be relic structures in the solar wind that have a solar origin, e.g., magnetic walls of flux tubes that separate solar wind plasma into distinct parcels. Identifying these structures in the solar wind is crucial to understanding the properties of the solar wind MHD turbulence. Using Ulysses observations we examine 3-year worth of solar wind magnetic field data when the Ulysses is at low latitude during solar minimum. Extending the previous work of Li (2007, 2008), we develop an automatic data analysis method of current sheet identification. Using this method, we identify more than 28000 current sheets. Various properties of the current sheet are obtained. These include the distributions of the deflection angle across the current sheet, the thickness of the current sheet and the waiting time statistics between current sheets.
A Solar Wind Model with Current Sheets

Abstract:Current sheets are common structures in the solar wind and are a significant source of solar wind MHD turbulence intermittency. They can arise from non-linear interactions of MHD turbulence or be relic structures in the solar wind that having a solar origin. Observations show that magnetic field directions often change abruptly upon crossing these structures. The presence of these structures can affect the transport of solar energetic particles. To understand the effects of these current sheet a realistic solar wind model that includes them is necessary. In this work, we construct a realistic solar wind model that explicitly includes current sheets. In our model, the solar wind is composed of individual cells with varying local uniform mean magnetic fields. The size of the individual cells are adjusted to agree with in-situ observations at 1 AU. The turbulence in each cell is modeled by either a slab and/or 2D turbulence.

Abstract:A puzzling observation of solar wind MHD turbulence is the often seen Kolmogorov scaling of k(-5/3), even though the solar wind MHD turbulence is dominated by Alfvenic fluctuations. Recently Li et al. (2011) proposed that the presence of current sheets may be the cause of the Kolmogorov scaling. Here, using a cell model of the solar wind we examine the effect of current sheets on the power spectrum of the solar wind magnetic field. We model the solar wind as multiple cells separated by current sheets. We prescribe the spectra of turbulent magnetic field in individual cells as 1K-like and examine the spectra along trajectories that cross multiple boundaries. We find that these spectra become softer and are consistent with the Kolmogorov-scaling. Our finding supports our recent proposal of Li et al. (2011). (C) 2012 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Global Simulation of the Solar Wind: A Comparison With Parker Solar Probe Observations During 2018-2022

Abstract:Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models play an important role in the infrastructure of space weather forecasting. Validating such models commonly utilizes in situ solar wind measurements made near the orbit of the Earth. The purpose of this study is to test the performance of G3DMHD (a data driven, time-dependent, 3-D MHD model of the solar wind) with Parker Solar Probe (PSP) measurements. Since its launch in August 2018, PSP has traversed the inner heliosphere at different radial distances sunward of the Earth (the closest approach ~13.3 solar radii), thus providing a good opportunity to study evolution of the solar wind and to validate heliospheric models of the solar wind. The G3DMHD model simulation is driven by a sequence of maps of photospheric field extrapolated to the assumed source surface (2.5 Rs) using the potential field model from 2018 to 2022, which covers the first 15 PSP orbits. The Pearson correlation coefficient (cc) and the mean absolute squared error (MASE) are used as the metrics to evaluate the model performance. It is found that the model performs better for both magnetic intensity (cc = 0.75; MASE = 0.60) and the solar wind density (cc = 0.73; MASE = 0.50) than for the solar wind speed (cc = 0.15; MASE = 1.29) and temperature (cc = 0.28; MASE = 1.14). This is due primarily to lack of accurate boundary conditions. The well-known underestimate of the magnetic field in solar minimum years is also present. Assuming that the radial magnetic field becomes uniformly distributed with latitude at or below 18 Rs (the inner boundary of the computation do-main), the agreement in the magnetic intensity significantly improves (cc = 0.83; MASE = 0.49).

Abstract:Some space weather models, such as the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF) used in this study, use solar wind propagated from the first Lagrange point (L1) to the bow shock nose (BSN) to forecast geomagnetic storms. The SWMF is a highly coupled framework of space weather models that include multiple facets of the Geospace environment, such as the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The propagated solar wind measurements are used as a boundary condition for SWMF. The solar wind propagation method is a timeshift based on the calculated phase front normal (PFN) which leads to some uncertainties. For example, the propagated solar wind could have evolved during this timeshift. We use a data set of 123 geomagnetic storms between 2010 and 2019 run by the SWMF Geospace configuration to analyze the impact solar wind propagation and solar wind driving has on the geomagnetic indices. We look at the probability distributions of errors in SYM‐H, cross polar cap potential (CPCP), and auroral electrojet indices AL and AU. Through studying the median errors (MdE), standard deviations and standardized regression coefficients, we find that the errors depend on the propagation parameters. Among the results, we show that the accuracy of the simulated SYM‐H depends on the spacecraft distance from the Sun‐Earth line. We also quantify the dependence of the standard deviation in SYM‐H errors on the PFN and solar wind pressure. These statistics provide an insight into how the propagation method affects the final product of the simulation, which are the geomagnetic indices.

Abstract:A hybrid three-dimensional (3D) MHD model for solar wind study is proposed in the present paper with combined grid systems and solvers. The computational domain from the Sun to Earth space is decomposed into the near-Sun and off-Sun domains, which are respectively constructed with a Yin–Yang overset grid system and a Cartesian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) grid system and coupled with a domain connection interface in the overlapping region between the near-Sun and off-Sun domains. The space-time conservation element and solution element method is used in the near-Sun domain, while the Harten–Lax–Leer method is employed in the off-Sun domain. The Yin–Yang overset grid can avoid well-known singularity and polar grid convergence problems and its body-fitting property helps achieve high-quality resolution near the solar surface. The block structured AMR Cartesian grid can automatically capture far-field plasma flow features, such as heliospheric current sheets and shock waves, and at the same time, it can save significant computational resources compared to the uniformly structured Cartesian grid. A numerical study of the solar wind structure for Carrington rotation 2069 shows that the newly developed hybrid MHD solar wind model successfully produces many realistic features of the background solar wind, in both the solar corona and interplanetary space, by comparisons with multiple solar and interplanetary observations.
Spacecraft floating potential measurements for the $\mathit{Wind}$ spacecraft

Abstract:Analysis of 8,804,545 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs), observed by the $\mathit{Wind}$ spacecraft near 1 AU between January 1, 2005 and January 1, 2022, was performed to determine the spacecraft floating potential, $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$. $\mathit{Wind}$ was designed to be electrostatically clean, which helps keep the magnitude of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ small (i.e., $\sim$5--9 eV for nearly all intervals) and the potential distribution more uniform. We observed spectral enhancements of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ at frequencies corresponding to the inverse synodic Carrington rotation period with at least three harmonics. The 2D histogram of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ versus time also shows at least two strong peaks with a potential third, much weaker peak. These peaks vary in time with the intensity correlated with solar maximum. Thus, the spectral peaks and histogram peaks are likely due to macroscopic phenomena like coronal mass ejections (solar cycle dependence) and stream interaction regions (Carrington rotation dependence). The values of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ are summarized herein and the resulting dataset is discussed.

Abstract:Single spacecraft missions do not measure the pristine solar wind continuously because of the spacecrafts' orbital trajectory. The infrequent spatiotemporal cadence of measurement fundamentally limits conclusions about solar wind-magnetosphere coupling throughout the solar system. At Mars, such single spacecraft missions result in limitations for assessing the solar wind's role in causing lower altitude observations such as auroral dynamics or atmospheric loss. In this work, we detail the development of a virtual solar wind monitor from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission; a single spacecraft. This virtual solar wind monitor provides a continuous estimate of the solar wind upstream from Mars with uncertainties. We specifically employ Gaussian process regression to estimate the upstream solar wind and uncertainty estimations that scale with the data sparsity of our real observations. This proxy enables continuous solar wind estimation at Mars with representative uncertainties for the majority of the time since since late 2014. We conclude by discussing suggested uses of this virtual solar wind monitor for statistical studies of the Mars space environment and heliosphere.

In this paper, we perform steady-state, data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar wind during Carrington rotation 2258 with the GAMERA model. We use the ADAPT and AFT flux transport models and quantitatively assess how well each model matches in-situ measurements from Parker, SolO, and Earth. We find that both models reproduce the magnetic field components at Parker quantitatively well. At SolO and Earth, the magnetic field is reproduced relatively well, though not as well as at Parker, and the density is reproduced extremely poorly. The velocity is overpredicted at Parker, but not at SolO or Earth, hinting that the Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) relation, fine-tuned for Earth, misses the deceleration of the solar wind near the Sun. We conclude that AFT performs quantitatively similarly to ADAPT in all cases and that both models are comparable to a purely WSA heliospheric treatment with no MHD component. Finally, we trace field lines from SolO back to an active region outflow that was observed by Hinode/EIS, and which shows evidence of elevated charge state ratios.

Uncertainty Estimates of Solar Wind Prediction Using HMI Photospheric Vector and Spatial Standard Deviation Synoptic Maps

Abstract:The solar wind prediction is based on the Wang and Sheeley (Astrophys. J. 365, 372, <a href="/article/10.1007/s11207-020-01704-1#ref-CR52">1990</a>) empirical relationship between the solar wind speed observed at 1 AU and the rate of magnetic flux tube expansion (FTE) between the photosphere and the inner corona, where the FTE is computed using coronal models (e.g. the current sheet source surface (CSSS) and the potential field source surface models). These models take the photospheric flux density synoptic maps as their inner boundary conditions to extrapolate the photospheric magnetic fields and to deduce the coronal and the heliospheric magnetic field configuration. These synoptic maps are among the most widely-used of all solar magnetic data products and therefore, the uncertainties in the model predictions that are caused by the uncertainties in the synoptic maps are worthy of study. However, an estimate of the uncertainties in the construction of these synoptic maps was not available until recently when Bertello et al. (Solar Phys. 289, 2419, <a href="/article/10.1007/s11207-020-01704-1#ref-CR7">2014</a>) obtained the spatial standard deviation synoptic maps. For each photospheric synoptic map, they obtained 98 Monte Carlo realizations of the spatial standard deviation maps.

Abstract:Venus Express interplanetary magnetic field measurements have been examined for magnetic "holes," accompanied by magnetic field directional changes. We examine both the thickness of the current sheet and the depth of the magnetic field depression. We find the thickness of the current sheet is not correlated with the depth of the field depression. The depth of the magnetic holes is related to directional angle change. Since total pressure should balance across these discontinuities, there must be enhanced plasma pressure within the magnetic holes. The dependence of the depth of the hole (i.e., size of the plasma pressure enhancement) on the directional changes suggests that the heating of the plasma associated with the hole formation may be provided by annihilation of the magnetic energy in the current sheet, via slow reconnection. Solar Wind Directional Change Triggering Flapping Motions of the Current Sheet: MMS Observations

Abstract:We report on a flapping motion event near the substorm onset on 17 June 2017 using Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission data. A strong current density with a maximum value of 190nA/m(2) is observed during the flapping. The north-to-south (south-to-north) crossing of the neutral sheet corresponds to an increase (a decrease) of the Z(GSM) component of the solar wind V-Z,V- SW. The periods (8min) of the flapping and variations of V-Z,V- SW are almost equal. In addition, dV(Z, SW)/dt and dB(X)/dt observed by MMS exhibit a strong negative correlation. These observations suggest that the flapping motions are triggered by the solar wind directional change via creating a motion of the current sheet in the north-south direction. The pressure difference between the northern and southern lobes caused by the solar wind is expected to be a possible contribution to the formation of the flapping. Plain language summary Flapping motions are large-amplitude waves of the magnetotail current sheet in the north-south direction. These waves are believed to be excited in the magnetotail center and then propagate to its flanks. However, their generation mechanisms are not fully understood so far. In this study, we investigate the relation between a flapping motion event and the solar wind parameters. We find that there is a one-to-one correspondence between temporal variations of the flapping and the Z(GSM) component of the solar wind velocity V-Z,V- SW. Moreover, the vertical movement of the ion flow is also in accordance with V-Z,V- SW. These observations suggest that the flapping can be generated by the solar wind directional change. During the flapping, a strong current density with a maximum value of 190nA/m(2) is generated, much larger than the current reported by previous studies.
The solar wind from a stellar perspective: how do low-resolution data impact the determination of wind properties?

Abstract:Alfvén-wave-driven 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models, which are increasingly used to predict stellar wind properties, contain unconstrained parameters and rely on low-resolution stellar magnetograms. We explore the effects of the input Alfvén wave energy flux and the surface magnetogram on the wind properties predicted by the Alfvén Wave Solar Model (AWSoM). We lowered the resolution of two solar magnetograms during solar cycle maximum and minimum using spherical harmonic decomposition. The Alfvén wave energy was altered based on non-thermal velocities determined from a far ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of the solar twin 18 Sco. Additionally, low-resolution magnetograms of three solar analogues were obtained using Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI). Finally, the simulated wind properties were compared to Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) observations. AWSoM simulations using well constrained input parameters taken from solar observations can reproduce the observed solar wind mass and angular momentum loss rates. The resolution of the magnetogram has a small impact on the wind properties and only during cycle maximum. However, variation in Alfvén wave energy influences the wind properties irrespective of the solar cycle activity level. Furthermore, solar wind simulations carried out using the low-resolution magnetogram of the three stars instead of the solar magnetogram could lead to an order of a magnitude difference in the simulated wind properties. The choice in Alfvén energy has a stronger influence on the wind output compared to the magnetogram resolution. The influence could be even stronger for stars whose input boundary conditions are not as well constrained as those of the Sun. Unsurprisingly, replacing the solar magnetogram with a stellar magnetogram could lead to completely inaccurate solar wind properties, and should be avoided in solar and stellar wind simulations.

Abstract:We conduct simulations using the three-dimensional (3D) solar-interplanetary conservation element/solution element (SIP-CESE) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and magnetogram data from a Carrington rotation (CR) 1897 to compare the three commonly used heating methods, i.e. the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) Alfven wave heating method, the turbulence heating method and the volumetric heating method. Our results show that all three heating models can basically reproduce the bimodal structure of the solar wind observed near the solar minimum. The results also demonstrate that the major acceleration interval terminates about 4R(S) for the turbulence heating method and 10R(S) for both the WKB Alfven wave heating method and the volumetric heating method. The turbulence heating and the volumetric heating methods can capture the observed changing trends by the WIND satellite, while the WKB Alfven wave heating method does not.

Abstract:One of the important parameters in magnetotail studies is the thickness of the current sheet. The determination of this thickness is subject to many assumptions of the geometry, such as the current sheet normal direction. The minimum variance analysis (MVA) has been widely used in studies of the current sheet in the tail or at the magnetopause with single-satellite magnetometer data. With four Cluster spacecraft, we are able to determine the current sheet normal direction by using the crossing timings. In this study, we perform MVA on selected Cluster neutral sheet crossing cases to determine the normal directions. We compare these MVA normal estimates with the timing-derived normals. We find that both MVA and four spacecraft timing analysis give useful data.
Assessing satellite-derived wind speeds: insights from buoy measurements and analysis of deviation factors

Abstract:To evaluate the latest generation of satellite wind speed from AMSR2, ASCAT, GMI, SSMIS, SMAP, and WindSat, buoy measurements were obtained from buoys in coastal and tropical open ocean areas. Root mean square errors were calculated, resulting in values of 1.19 m/s for AMSR2, 1.25 m/s for ASCAT, 1.37 m/s for GMI, 1.38 m/s for SSMIS, 2.48 m/s for SMAP, and 1.18 m/s for WindSat. Numerous data pairs fall above the 45-degree line, mainly due to decreased buoy ac-curacy during high winds. Factors contributing to this include underestimation of buoy readings due to rough sea states and wind profile distortion. Satellite biases exhibit unimodal fluctuations over a one-year cycle, aligning with annual sea surface temperature variations. Statistical effects in extreme wind speed range cause abnormal fluctuations in statistics. Higher latitudes experi-ence larger deviations due to rough sea state. Ocean currents affect satellite wind speed observa-tions, particularly when aligned with wind direction. Coastal wind speed gradients primarily influenced from land contamination like rugged mountainous terrain along the West Coast of North America. Coastal upwelling also contributes to bias, with the west coast showing higher bias. A global comparison between SMAP and WindSat retrieval wind speeds demonstrates SMAP's poor ability to monitor general wind speeds and validates the satellite-buoy experiment.

Abstract:Combined with data assimilation methods, a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical model is an effective tool to explore the mechanism of space weather. As a driver of space weather, the dynamic development of stream interaction regions (SIRs) near the orbit of Mars is an area of active research. In this study, we use the interplanetary total variation diminishing (TVD) MHD model to simulate solar wind parameters and model SIRs near Mars from 2021 November 15 to 2021 December 31. In this model, the MHD equations are solved by the conservation TVD Lax–Friedrichs scheme in a rotating spherical coordinate system with six component meshes used on the spherical shell. Solar wind velocity, density, temperature, and magnetic field strength are given at the inner boundary due to the characteristic waves propagating outward. We compared modeled results with observations from Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and Tianwen-1 (China’s first Mars exploration mission). Statistical analysis shows that the simulated results can capture SIRs and are in good agreement with observations; moreover, the assimilated results based on the Kalman filter improve the accuracy of numerical prediction compared with simulated results. This paper is the first attempt to simulate SIR events combined with MAVEN and Tianwen-1 in situ observations. Our work demonstrates that using the MHD model with the Kalman filter to reconstruct solar wind parameters can help us study the characteristics of SIRs near Mars, improve the capabilities of space weather forecasting, and understand the background solar wind environment.
